Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Possessing a likable, arena-rock amalgamation of grunge, alternative, and nu metal, Kansas City's Puddle of Mudd are at once emotional and straight-ahead. Indeed, their no-frills lineup puts one in mind of a less uptight Creed. Singer Wesley Reid Scantlin possesses an Eddie Vedder earnestness that on hard-hitting tunes like "Nobody Told Me" takes on a Cobain-like urgency. Ranging from acoustic-based yet lush midtempo rockers such as "Drift and Die" to the gimmicky fun of "She Hates Me" to the edgy Nirvana-esque "Bring Me Down" to the dynamic and direct "Control," the 11-song-strong Come Clean is an assured, accomplished, and varied debut likely to resonate with rock fans of many tastes and temperaments. Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars The good old days.......2007-05-20

Yeah I remember when this alblum first came out. I was about 13 in the 7th Grade. I remember "Blurry" that was alomst my faveorite song. It really related to my dramatic life in school and at home growing up. And it really does still relate to me to this day. Well im 19 now and in college. As I got older I have opended myself up to other stuff like death metal, black metal, alot of underground stuff, and so on. But I never forgot about my childhood days when "Blurry" was my favorite song. I never got sick of it! Among alot of the other stuff I listened to back in those days! Some things just never change.

So much dumping on this band! "Blah! Blah! Blah! They rip off Nirvana!" Whatever! What band doesnt these days huh? Dont get me wrong I like Nirvana and all the Seattle grunge scene bands. But something being an exact rip off doesnt make it a bad thing! If some thing is and EXACT rip off then it is pretty much every bit as good!

So if you are just some narrow-minded, 40 year old loser, high school dropout, all caught up in the 70's or the 80's and is afraid of anything new, and practically worships the Rolling Stones then this kind of music definitely isnt for you!

3 out of 5 stars Sits at the back of my CD shelf........2006-12-14

Bought it for the hits (which I did against my better judgement), but the album as a whole lacks substance. I can't listen to bands who cannot put a complete album together. Not every song should be a hit, but there must be some kind of cohesion.

Having said that, the popular tunes are great.

5 out of 5 stars Puddle of Mudd - My New Favorite Album.......2006-08-31

If you like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman, you are in for a treat. This group rocks! Where Nickelback's Chad punches out his lines (most excellent), Puddle of Mudd is very melodious and has a great all-round sound going. This album is absolutely their best work to date and I am excited to hear some new tunes from this awesome band. Keep 'em coming! :)

5 out of 5 stars Silver Side Up? Naw, I'd give 'em Gold. .......2006-08-01

When the CD first came out in 2002, I started hearing them on the radio and on the College Television Network at school. After a short time I was really diggin' their music. I soon bought the album "Silver Side Up". Two songs that especially stood out to me was "Drift and Die", and "Blurry." I haven't heard much of their stuff since then, but as of now, this is my favorite with Puddle of Mudd.

4 out of 5 stars "La la la love".......2006-07-11

Okay, so when I first heard 'Control' I just passed 'Puddle of Mudd' off as another 'Nirvana' rip-off...another band that couldn't find their own sound so they decided to 'be' like someone else, but I was so wrong. While not brilliant, 'Come Clean' really shows a lot of promise in it's track listing. The follow-up single is the blunt 'She Hates Me' where lead singer Wesley bashes his ex with some colorful words. The next single, the heartfelt 'Blurry', is another gem and also another look at what this band can deliver. From radio friendly tracks like the aformentioned 'Control' to ballads like 'Blurry' and fun-foul tracks like 'She Hates Me'. Add in some great stripped acustic tracks like 'Drift & Die' and the closer 'Piss it all Away' as well as the fan favorite 'Nobody Told Me' and the emotional 'Basement' and you have a winning effort by a not so average band.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

The female presence in 1998's releases has been a near tour de force. PJ Harvey, Hole's Courtney Love, and Garbage's Shirley Manson all stormed the music scene with dynamic performances. But none can match the effortless vamp and allure of Curve vocalist Toni Halliday. Her voice has always been dark, seductive, and utterly commanding, and with Come Clean, she and partner Dean Garcia have created a danceable, riveting album that burns the feet and strikes a nerve. If you think their sound is suspiciously similar to Garbage's, remember--Curve were here first. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars WHY COMPARE?.......2006-02-21

Oh God, I can't stand anymore comparisons between Curve and Garbage...Look, Garbage are one of my favourite bands, but their sound has so little to share with Curve's one and not only because Garbage are more commercial or easy listening, actually they are more different than you can think at a first listening. This 1996's album is marking a change in Curve sound, infact is very different from the three earlier albums PUBIC FRUIT DOPPELGANGER and CUCKOO, and probably if you are a Garbage listener, you will find that COME CLEAN is quite similar to Garbage sound.
Now think that when this CD was first published in 1996, the first Garbage album was just issued too. I don't think that they have so influenced each other as someone can think or that Garbage took some inspiration from less commercial Curve. If you already have some Curve album buy this because is very original and different from the others. If you don't have one, buy it because can be right to approach to Curve music, you will find a unimaginable music dimension.

5 out of 5 stars Sascha.......2006-01-14

I just recently purchased COME CLEAN. Let me tell you I was blown away. I am a huge Garbage fan and I have to say that I am more in love with COME CLEAN than I am with Garbage's latest album--Bleed Like Me. I see it has being a lot like Garbage's Version 2.0 in a way. I completely fell in love with Curve once I heard this album and now I am purchasing another Curve album. I already own Gift and I have always liked that album. But Come Clean completely blew my mind and got me addicted to Curve.

4 out of 5 stars A little darker, a little edgier.......2005-07-18

"Gift" is one of my favorite albums of 2001, so it would make sense if I start checking out the band's earlier albums. I already own "Cuckoo" since the early '90s. Now while "Come Clean" is good in its own right but it doesn't fare as well as "Gift" or especially on the band's now classic "Doppelganger" which is probably the band's most melodic album I have heard. There is a darker edge to "Come Clean" that the listener hadn't heard on "Cuckoo". The songs are more techno-ish, with elements of industrial beats in between. Toni Halliday sounds wonderful of course. She could never sound bad. "Come Clean" sounds like it would be the ideal soundtrack for a futuristic thriller. "Chinese Burn" has that razor edge sound that just rips through the stereo system. If it wasn't for bands like Curve, I seriously doubt that there would be a Garbage. For me, Curve is one of the first bands to have combined techno and rock. "Come Clean" is a great album by Curve. The songs may have taken me awhile to grow on me and lack the pop sensibility of their earlier work, I still think "Come Clean" is a vastly overlooked album and Curve is definitely a vastly overlooked band from the early '90s.

5 out of 5 stars classic and totally underrated.......2005-03-09

who are curve? who does this awesome song you're playing in your car? my friends always ask me that. this badn isn't well known in the US, but they are truly gifted and produce meaningful, hard hitting, groovy, beat-laden songs. toni (the singer) has a beautiful voice and the beats and guitars are well taken care of. imho this band is so much better than other bands people compare them to, like garbage, which are... well their name says it all. check this cd out, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Curve's late 90's masterpiece.......2003-11-26

"Gift" is the album that hooked me onto Curve, but it was the Lunatic Calm remix of "Chinese Burn" that shined the light on them for me. I was curious about this band that one of my all time favorite electronic artists had remixed a song from, so I searched for the original track and found it here on "Come Clean". I couldn't find it in stores, so while I waited for it to be delivered, I picked up "Gift" and really liked what I heard. Then "Come Clean" came in.

Although my first listen didn't captivate me, through repeated use, this has come to be one of my favorite CDs of all time! A beautiful yet sinister blend of rock, techno, and gothic hues, Curve's 1998 album picks you up and shakes you until the last track ends. Its a wild ride in some places, but in others it sits you down and seduces you with relaxed vocals and sounds. Then it gets right back up and throws you around again.

Each track is beautifully written and mixed. They all sound different from each other while maintaining a sense of identity. Its awsome.

If you wanna get into Curve, I'D suggest starting here. Then pick up "Gift", "Doppelganger" (and Pubic Fruit if you love Doppelganger), and finally "Cuckoo" if you wish to pursue more. Any of their albums are a great buy, but if you get ANY Curve disc, I'd suggest this one for sure. It greatly sums up their power and potential, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A Dwarves classic.......2006-09-03

If you get only one Dwarves CD, this is the one. This band went through several periods (and at least one crisis), but tuneful, rockin' punk here makes for great listening song after song. Fans of the Ramones or Queers will enjoy their fixation on fun, and of course this is one of the classic record covers, ever.

Mandatory for every collection.

3 out of 5 stars For a wonderful romantic evening.................2005-04-12

This is a rocking 21 minutes from The Dwarves. Not the hardest hardcore punk, but good stuff. Actually even before I knew this was produced by Smash Mouths producer, I thought a few tracks sounded like Smash Mouth, whether that's good or bad is your call. That's especially noticable in "How It's Done" and "Better Be Women", both strong songs. Overall though it's just mostly rocking fun. Now to quote track 6, "Recognize The Dwarves, slut!"

5 out of 5 stars The best punk album of 2003.......2004-01-04

"Come Clean" is the best album the dwarves have ever done. Since the first time I listened it until now, I can't take the songs out of my head.
The best songs are "Better be woman", "How it's done, "Production Value", "Over You" and "Way out". The lyrics are irreverent as usual and the music goes from Industrial punk on Over you, to Hardcore on "River City" and some catchy melodies on "Production Value". There is everything on this record, is definitely part of the punk history. Excuse my english.

5 out of 5 stars Queens.......2000-05-27

If you like The Dwarves check out the bass players other band Queens Of The Stone Age. Good flowing rock and roll with a hard edge.

5 out of 5 stars The Dwarves Come Clean.......2000-03-18

This is the best album of the century!!! I expected that from the Dwarves though, since they have been my favorite band since '88! They're an irreverent old school punk rock band and they're definitely not afraid to experiment or try something new. THE DWARVES ARE THE NEW KINGS OF PUNK SO GRAB A BEER, TURN THE STEREO UP, AND LET THE DWARVES SHOW YOU HOW IT'S DONE!!!

Joel Cohen spent countless days in the library at the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake, Maine, transcribing dozens of tunes from among thousands of archived chants and spirituals. Many more of these wonderful tunes were recalled from memory by the community's few resident Shakers--and Cohen and his ensemble, joined by several Shaker singers, made this recording, which deserves to be heard by everyone who loves songs and singing. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shaken *and* stirred.......2007-04-28

My interest in seeking Shaker music was professional - I wanted something to use for my church choir's next big performance. What I found in this collection of Shaker music was that, but much more.

Without their music, the Shakers can seem quaint and faintly silly - the odd maiden aunts and uncles with peculiar hobbies (making chairs and living without modern conveniences) and -- nutty bears, indeed! -- living in celibate, and therefore non-regenerative communities.

But their music is something else --earnest, longing, full of commitment and a sense of their own story. And tuneful! You don't have to be a Shaker to appreciate the visual poetry of "Virgins cloth'd in a clean white garment," or hear the deep commitment to resist sin in "I will fight, fight, and never slack until I overcome the enemy," or the desperate longing for eternal life evoked by "In yonder valley there flows sweet union." These are songs written for and performed by people who lived a most austere form of spirituality.

There are those who criticize Joel Cohen for having embellished some pieces by adding, for instance, a drone that is not attested in the literature. By I certainly praise Cohen and the Boston Camarata for having brought these wonderful pieces to my attention. It is icing on the cake that a few of the remaining Shakers of the Sabbathday Lake, Maine community chose to join their voices to this effort. To sing is to pray twice, and this CD certainly delivers on that promise, plus providing insights into an obscure but enduring corner of the American religious landscape.

4 out of 5 stars And then there were four..........2006-10-25

Only four Shakers remain and Sabbathday Lake in Maine houses them all. They range in age from 43 to 80. Given this, without fresh converts the Shakers face extinction. Barred by law from adopting orphans (since 1960, religious groups cannot adopt, only individuals or couples can), the twentieth century saw a steep decline in their numbers. Thanks to religious revivals, back in the nineteenth century their numbers swelled to over 5,000. But by 1920 a mere dozen remained. Though the small community hopes, and continually prays, for new recruits - which must come in the form of consenting adults - their values clash with modern America. Which was, of course, the original point. The largest hurdle for membership: total celibacy. No procreation, nothing. And, as we all know, twenty-first century American culture is anything but celibate.

Shakers remain not only celibate, but ascetic. Though not to the level of the Amish or the Luddites. Sabbathday Lake has a website, a car, telephones, and internet connections. They also don't hermit themselves from society. They play an active role in it. So throw away any notions of Puritanical witch hunters. Shakers laugh, socialize, read, dance, and, as this CD aptly demonstrates, they sing their ascetic hearts out.

The music, largely resembling English folk music, rhapsodizes about Shaker values, history, and vows. All songs but one get performed a capella. Some emphasize the lyrics with stomping and clapping. Permeating the set is the figure of "Mother," or Ann Lee. She helped found the Shakers in the eighteenth century and all faithful remain her spiritual heir (after Jesus Christ, of course). Early followers faced persecution, but found faith in Mother's actions and example. The song, titled appropriately, "Mother" retells the story of the "blessed fire" that spread from Manchester, England to America. Believers also reaffirm their faith and actions by singing songs in Meeting. An apt beginning, the CDs first song presents an ecstatic chant that reminds members of their ominous vow: "Come life, Shaker life, Come life eternal, Shake, shake out of me all that is carnal." "Followers of the Lamb" repeats the lines "I'm glad I am a Shaker" three times in celebration. Some songs don't have words and get half hummed half sung with mystical sounds. Shakers also express anger. "A companion stiff" fiercely pounds away individualistic thoughts in favor of community. The beautiful and upbeat "Encouragement" combines non-word singing with strongly contrasting fervent stomping and clapping. Somehow it encapsulates both meditative contemplation and heart-racing ecstasy in only two and a half minutes. Aptly bookending the CD is the most famous Shaker song, "Simple gifts." Instantly recognizable, Aaron Copland popularized this tune in his 1950 ballet "Appalachian Spring." Here it receives a sparse but inspired choral performance. As such, it aptly closes the CD with a message of faith and simplicity.

This CD, recorded at Sabbathday Lake, preserves a sampling of the thousands of Shaker songs known to exist. To this day these songs still fill the Shaker's 1794 Meeting House, the last one still in use. But how much longer? In the end, whether or not the Shakers can survive their current troubles, they will always remain an important piece of American and religious history. Not that that provides much consolation. Either way, this recording helps to preserve an important aspect of the Shaker's cultural contribution: their impressive music.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful album .......2005-09-17

This is a gorgeous album of melodies so strong and simple that you could build bridges on them.
The issue of the theology is irrelevent unless you believe that differences in the theology expressed--which may be different from yours--will interfere with your pleasure in the music. I can easily imagine topics that, no matter how beautifully expressed, I would be unable to listen to. It wasn't the case with this CD.

(You would also be upset if you believe that (a) listening to others express their beliefs, which are different form yours, is a sin, (b) your faith will be swayed by listening to gorgeous music from people who disagree with you, or (c) it's wrong for people with different beliefs to have their music recorded. I doubt very much that any of the people who have expressed theological concerns about this CD would feel that way but, hey, people who do feel that way should be given appropriate warning).

4 out of 5 stars Shaker Music -- misunderstood?.......2005-01-27

I read the reviews of this CD and feel some people are not understanding the lyrics. One cautioned that Shakers refer to God as "she." At first, I thought the same thing; however, after carefully listening to the music many times, I truly believe that when they refer to "she", they are solely referring to Mother Ann, the founder of their religion, whom they obviously adored and admired. This music is haunting and well-performed and should NOT be a "turn-off" to any Christian who chooses to listen.

5 out of 5 stars Some new old ideas.......2000-10-14

I am a big fan of early American music, and Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata really know how to do it. I found this album musically refreshing as well as spiritually refreshing. As a minister of music, I appreciate the sensitivity the Camerata brings to its interpretation of these traditional Shaker hymns. I also love hearing music by singers (specifially the Shakers themselves) who are not afraid to limit their understanding of who God is -- infinite and varied in nature, not subject to human limitations such as gender. There is a great freedom in this music which some listeners who are tired of the rigid confines of modern theology will appreciate. My only ambivalence is with the pieces on which the Shaker community takes a leading role. On the one hand, I think this is brilliant and enriching. On a purely auditory level, though, their untrained sound is a little distracting. Decide for yourself when you purchase this delightful album!

5 out of 5 stars Puddle of Mudd rules.......2003-09-10

This is a great album a mix of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Nirvana, but mostly nirvana
The best tracks are Control, Blurry, She Hates Me ,Nobody Told Me(my favorite),and P*** It All Away.

Now as for the warning label, I don`t even understand why it`s even there, even "She Hates Me" doesn`t have that much swearing, there was more swearing in Blink 182`s "Dude Ranch" and that isn`t even parental advisory, so I own the explicit(if you can call it that) version, but theres really no difference
So go buy either version go now!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars no...........2003-01-12

save yerself and get the other version. it's heartwrenching to hear their songs butchered like that.
i love their style. and i thought it was a good change after being bombarded by all the rock/rap metal/whatever else hybrid music that was popular back then. they sound very much like nirvana... Wes sometimes sounding uncannily like kurt it's almost scary. i've been going around telling people to give them a listen and that they sound like nirvana minus the angst.
she hates me cracks me up. sounds different from the rest of the tracks in this album.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2003-01-03

It is as good as the unedited one inless you like She Hates Me.then thats a problem because it goes She @#%&*$ Hates me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most coolest CDs of 2001!.......2002-11-23

This CD is a very interesting CD. It has alot of 90s grunge influence. By that I mean, they sound a lot like Nirvana, Silverchair, Pearl Jam The Smashing Pumpkins, and believe it or not, on some songs they kind of sound like The Goo Goo Dolls (on Blurry, there is a hint). And they also sound like Staind (they're both produced by Wimp Basket, I mean Limp Bizkit's Fred Purse, I mean Fred Durst). There are alot of good songs and there are some as I like to call them "outcasts" and one of those songs is:

Control (The dumbest song ever to be made by a good artist)

Some of my fave songs are:

Drift and Die (The best guitar strumming I have ever heard!)
Out of My Head (kind of Incubus-y, but still an awesome song!)
Blurry (Who doesn't like this song?!)
She F-in' Hates Me (Funny song, language could have been toned down though)
Bring Me Down (You can definitely hear a Nirvana/Pearl Jam sound on this song)
Never Change (Smashing Pumpkins influence)
Basement (SO PEARL JAM!)

Said (Pumpkins/Goo Goo Dolls sounding song)

If you are a concerned parent who doesn't want their kids to hear the bad language but allow them to listen to clean versions, then I think it best to get this album in clean version because there is explicit language heard in a couple of the songs mostly in "She F-in' Hates Me". I have the explicit version, but I really want to get the edited version so I won't have to hear the language anymore. Plus, what is cool is that for a limited time you can get the CD with a bonus DVD that is available in Clean or Explicit version which rarely happens. Well, anyway, gotta get back to my Mudd, hope my review helped!

5 out of 5 stars I know I've reviewed this CD before..........2002-09-21

This CD released by Puddle of Mudd is their debut album in a clean, edited manner. It's got the same great guitars, solos, vocals, and slightly changed lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!!.......2003-03-06

This is my new favorite album! I first heard them on the radio and the songs I heard were Blurry and She Hates Me which is an awesome song!! I don't know if any one else has thought about this but I think that the beginning starts out like the Grease song Summer Nights which at first I thought maybe it was a remake of that song which would have been wierd! I really didn't think so since it was rock sounding which makes the song great!! I also love all the other songs on this album, Oh and if you got the editon with DVD it has the video for She Hates Me which is awesome too!! So if you're in the mood for some great alternative rock or metal rock than you should really get this one it will make your day!!

      4 out of 5 stars Good sound!.......2005-09-28

The vocals are awesome and the energy they put in every song is great...
You should get the Explicit Lyrics version, but if you didn't or don't want to it doesn't matter at all, because is about the music not the bad words.

1 out of 5 stars Your all Posers.......2004-11-21

If you get Edited Cd's then your a bunch of posers who are too gentle and childish to get the real crap. Do me a favor and go back and listen to N'sync or Backstreet Boys your mommys will let you get that. Bye

1 out of 5 stars Edited crap sucks.......2004-10-26

you guys who all bought the edited version of mudvayne are posers. THE REAL VERSION OF METAL IS PARENTAL ADVISORY. IT IS LIKE LISTENING TO SLIPKNOT EDITED WHICH RUINS THE CD. if you want the REAL the end of all things to come get the parental advisory one.

      5 out of 5 stars Mud - men - metallers are back...........2003-05-29

This is perfect. No song, no album, no artist is better than Mudvayne's END OF ALL THINGS TO COME. This is twice as different as LD.50...
...and twice as good. If you're into Mudvayne or really heavy metal, I AM SURE YOU WILL LOOOOOOOOVE THIS!!...Chud's vocals and lyrics are more intellectual and more sensible than it's prequel, Guug's guitaring is awsome, Ru-d's bass is alot btter than LD.50, and Spug's drumming is more crazy and blinding.I have put thought into this and brung you my own review of the songs:

SILENCED - 9/10 - Incredible start to the album. Crazy and weird - just what I'd expect.
TRAPED IN THE WAKE OF A DREAM - 10/10 - Brilliant lyrics, awsome chorus and the solo is at least three different things. Well done!
NOT FALLING - 10/10 - Brilliant single. Explosive and thoughtful.Chorus is amazing.
      (PER)VERSION OF A TRUTH - 9/10 - Nice chorus and overall brilliant.
MERCY, SEVERITY - 10/10 - brilliant verse guitar and exellent solo with an angry chorus. Good.

WORLD SO COLD - 10/10 - ballad at start, cool aggressive chorus, strange solo but blinding song.
THE PATIENT MENTAL - 8/10 - Overall pretty good song with a decent chorus.
SKRYING - 9/10 - Wonderful song. Different from all the rest, brill lyrics, Nice chorus.
SOLVE ET COAGULA - 9/10 - Explosive and crazy. Strange name.
SHADOW OF A MAN - 20/10 - Best song in the world. Greatest chorus I have ever heard. Verses are cool, and solo is fascinating. Completely covered my brain. The best reason to buy the album.
      12:97:24:99 - N/A - 11 seconds of nothing. I would never thought of that.
THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME - 10/10 - fastest in the album. Strong, offensive lyrics, guitar bit too simple for GUUG.
A KEY TO NOTHING - 9/10 - Amazing finish to the best album to date. Could be a little more heavy. Well done!

Can you see the ratings I gave for each song? This is the best metal album up to date. LD.50 was good, but I've forgotten all about it. Buy it. I did, and it was the best decision I've ever made.
