Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Amazing.......2005-05-16

First of all, I only gave this four stars because I expect something even more mind-blowing from this band later. Well, I had heard this band's demo songs and was very impressed. They seemed to have a lot of potential but I wasn's sure about them until I read some positive reviews on here. The very first song catches your ear very quickly with a lot of KoRn influence. You can also here influences from many other bands within Pile of Heads. But, the real standout here is the vocal range and obscurity of the singer, SmAtH. He blew me away on this album. From the crunchy-riffed beggining of "What We Feed Off" to the heartfelt "J.W.D.S." this album is full of potential. My favorite songs are the first five on the album, but out of those I like "The Bomb" best. You have to add this album to your collection, these guys will be big!

From the band that brought us "War", "Unleash", and "So Much Hate" comes the first full length cd....and it is worth every penny! This album will never leave your cd player once you have it. With songs as hard hitting as Saved and Perfect Way To Die you will be aching to get in the pit! Pile of Heads is everything a band should be... killer guitar riffs, heavy drums, intricate beats, powerful lyrics enhanced by the incredible range of the singer, SmAth. This is one band that deserves some national attention! This cd should be in your collection!

Good, Heavy, New Band........2004-12-14

If you like the underground seen, enjoy finding a band that kicks a$$, and a one that of your friends have probably not heard of, then check this band out. The genre falls into the newer metal sound. One of the singers influences is Mike Patton (Singer of faith no more). However, When I listen to this, two bands stand out to compare this band to: "Mushroomhead" and "Apartment 26" I also think I notice splashes and dashes of Slipknot, The Used, Static-x, Chavelle, Killgore, and Paparoach (even though some of these bands are not as heavy as pile of head) So if you wants something cutting edge, heavy, hints of digital, and just about every other genre of music, then you will probably like this

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Almsot Had It Right!.......2002-06-19

Well, let me say this, you have to buy this CD for the 59 minute documentary. If you think that Winwood killed the SDG, then you were sadly mistaken. Don't get me wrong, their best years were with certainly with little Steve at the organ and mic, but "With Their New Face On" was the swan song for the group. The neo-psych "Time Seller" is worth the price of admission alone. It is a shame that Cherry Red didn't not see fit to include the classic "After Tea" single side on this release, like previuos issues of this record.

It is really cool to have a look back at the group and the times (1968) with the CD ROM. Yes, get this CD for the CD ROM and I am sad to say you must get an old import copy of the CD for the great extra tracks that Cherry red didn't put on this CD.

This is honestly the worst collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Music ever. If you've never heard his music before, stick to getting an official CD. The sound quality, arrangements, and voices on these make it feel like it was recorded in someone's basement. Just absolutely HORRID!!! I ended up just throwing it out. Take my word for it, DON'T BUY THIS COLLECTION, or any other ALW stuff you see that says "Orlando Pops Orchestra" Just look what people are selling it for used. That should say enough.
