4 out of 5 stars Good Old Fashioned Roots Rock With Attitude.............2005-11-08

Not Mark Cutler's best work but certainly no letdown either. If you like good melodic roots rock with clever lyrics and a heavy guitar edge then Mark Cutler is well worth checking out. His records are somewhat difficult to find but if you google search his name he's got a pretty cool website where you can oder whatever you can't find here (which is another 6-7 cd's. MC is one of these stars who for whatever reason never quite shined like he should have at least on the commercial scene. The guy has opened for Dylan, Shawn Colvin and worked with Iggy Pop so that should at least be some indicator that not exactly a slouch. You can also check out his work with The Raindogs on ATCO Records and with his original band The Schemers on his own indie label. Some great catchy stuff by a guy who's given it his all for 25 plus years.

unrewarded talent. Makes you wonder how many others like this are out there.

5 out of 5 stars Former Raindogs frontman steps out.......1999-04-22

Cutler was the frontman for the underrated Boston band The Raindogs that released two unheard albums in the early 80's. With "Skylolo," his second solo release, he has really upped the ante. By taking his influences of Howlin' Wolf, Hank Williams and Television, he has created his own sound. This release truly has him finding his voice. The characters in these dark, melodic songs are all intriguing and inevitably that's what draws the listener in. For example, Candy of "Candy Says" is a real handful - she's been around the block a time or two. And you're not quite sure if the narrator of "I Could Get Used To This" is trying to convince the listener or himself that he can handle loneliness. In addition, he has a great ability to incorporate hooks into these vignettes - you'll be singing along to "Lie Next To You" and "Call Me A Stranger" after one listen. Tempos vary from the ragged rocker "Kinda Girl" to the Who-like midtempo number "Know Me By Now" to the aforementioned haunting ballad "I Could Get Used To This." All in all, every song is a winner. Cutler also has several other releases well worth hearing on an mp3 site - check 'em out and spread the word.
