Product Description
Japanese miniature paper sleeve reissue of 1969 album with 4 bonus tracks TBA. Essentially the same as Badfinger, the Iveys landed on the Beatles' Apple label in late 1968 after the Beatles' personal assistant, Mal Evans, encouraged them to submit tapes to Paul McCartney. Their bright, melodic, and harmony-filled pop/rock sound immediately drew comparisons to the Beatles and to the work of McCartney in particular. EMI. 2005.

Album Description

Mark Isham's highly emotional score for the film CRASH will move you in ways you never expected. Beautiful cinematic passages collide with ethnic voices evoking the powerful imagery of the film. The album is complimented by the original song "In the Deep" by Bird York and "Maybe Tomorrow" by Stereophonics.

4 out of 5 stars A good soundtrack..........2007-05-06

...to a great movie. It's not as good as his soundtrack to "Afterglow" but a nice listen nonetheless. Without the great band members like Gary Burton & Charles Lloyd what can one expect?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite film scores from Mark Isham.......2007-02-25

Mark Isham is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers. His work on the indie film "The Cooler" introduced me to his talents and I enjoyed what I heard. It wasn't until "Crash" did I really start taking notice of his work. Mark's work on "Crash" is a mix of ambient and classical with a glimmer of Middle Eastern (like on the song "Flames"). A lot of film composers have a terrible habit of creating loud, bombastic music that simply overwhelms the film and the person watching the film. Mark avoids the bombastic trappings of Hans Zimmer and John Williams by creating a more lush, haunting, minimal score that will leave a profound, moving effect on the filmgoer. One of the best songs on the album is "Flames" a gorgeous Middle Eastern-influenced track with ethereal female vocals that reminded me of Azam Ali and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. My other favorite song on the cd is "In the Deep" by Bird York. The song is a lovely folk/pop/jazz song that captures the emotional turmoil that occurs through out the film. I wasn't too wild about The Stereophonics track. It kinda killed the intimate sound Mark Isham created. At least Bird York's song had that same lush, intimate, atmospheric sound. While "Crash" wasn't perfect by all means, the music itself is perfect in every sense of the word at least to me it is. Too bad I can't say the same for his recent work for "The Black Dahlia".

5 out of 5 stars broken box.......2007-02-21

Although the album is a perfect piece of art and the music has a total efect on the whole movie, tha box that came the cd was broken inside.. the teeth that holds the cd were not there and the cd was loose ready to fall when i opened the box..
Thats very unfortunate but still hasn't happened in the past, I'm amazon oriented customer, have ordered lots of stuff from amazon never had problems in the past! My best regards, Alex

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best ever.......2007-01-09

Every now and again a movie comes along that impacts you so personally and deeply, you cannot ignore, or ever forget what it meant to you. This is one of those movies.
Crash will take you down to your very soul then drag you back kicking and screaming to reality and wanting to run away and hide.
Dealing with society's inability to overcome prejudice on a very personal level, Crash exhibits the ability to make you examine not only yourself, but everyone around you. You ARE racist. Every thought you have tells you that, good or bad.
There is no one actor that stands out above the rest in this movie, all are treated by the director as being of the same importance, but the viewer WILL identify with at least one of them. All put in performances well above that expected. From Sandra Bullocks affluent life down to Matt Dillons survival in a dingy apartment, through Don Cheadles family dynamic to Jennifer Espisito's implicit Racism, you will see what ordinary America is really like. How we all interact with each other on a day-to-day basis, how the decisions we make effact not only ourselves, but others around us.
It would be impossible to give the plot in less than 5,000 words, but this film has gained 3 Oscars, 36 other awards and has 56 nominations, and it was worth more.
THE film of 2005, will be in the top 250 for all time movies.

3 out of 5 stars a profound disappointment,,,.......2006-12-27

There just isn't enough variety here to make the music memorable, and the mood is similar throughout. One looks in vain for a memorable melody or piquant harmony. anything but the doodling we have here which sounds like that of a 3rd rate composer. Perhaps this music works as background; as the "main event" the Cd is a "crash" ing bore!

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

3 out of 5 stars "I've Been Waiting" for you to consider this with bonus tracks!.......2007-06-20

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Before long the metamorphosis of the Iveys would be complete and Badfinger would be introduced to the world. Although the 1969 release "Maybe Tomorrow" didn't make waves in the music pool, it did support a foundation for what would come. Half the tracks with some tweaking and musical maturity would resurface on the debut recording from Badfinger.

This CD release gives us the entire first album and four bonus tracks (Two are B-sides) and for Pete Ham collectors two unreleased songs he penned.

It is evident that the group was looking for a sound and peaking in several directions. The songs as constructed can best be described as a cross between the Beatles, Bee Gees, "The Monkees" and what "Three Dog Night" would become.

Critics have pointed out that some of the songs feel forced. An example could be "Yesterday Ain't Coming Back" which can fit into a lounge act category.

This doesn't mean the songs don't have merit. They may not lunge out the way the Badfinger renditions would, but there are some nice tunes on display. "Beautiful And Blue" does a nice job capturing the Bee Gees and Pete Ham's "I've Been Waiting" as well as his unreleased composition "Mrs. Jones are quality tunes."

If you have tasted some Badfinger and enjoy the texture, this deserves a listen and a fair chance.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars Pre-Badfinger release worth having.......2006-06-18

Drummer Mike Gibbins once described The Iveys as a hard little combo - meaning they liked to rock and he was right. Their style was an amalgam and thus difficult to pigeonhole by the label bigwigs who think they know best (they usually don't). This CD features four bonus tracks which only enhance the variety of the music. The song "I've Been Waiting" is a true rocker while "Maybe Tomorrow" is a ballad that should have been a bigger hit. It's also notable that this original lineup had a more lustrous sound as it pertains to their complex harmonies. No disrespect to Joey Molland but Ron Griffiths' voice was a better match with Ham and Evans.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album On Apple Records.......2005-08-12

The Iveys, very short lived on apple. The Iveys and Badfinger are both very under-rated bands. If you like Badfinger; well this is an album you wont want to miss your chance at buying. This album deserves a good 5 stars.

Highlights of this album are: Maybe Tomorrow, No Escaping Your Love, Yesterday ain't Coming Back, They're Knockin Down Our Home, Mrs. Jones, Beautiful and Blue.

Songs that aren't great: Think Of All The Good Times.

Put It This Way, I like all of them except "Think Of All The Good Times"

3 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Pre-Badfinger Release From 1969.......2004-08-07

It's great to see this release back in print. This is the 1969 pre-Badfinger album that featured Pete Ham, Mike Gibbins, Tom Evans and Ron Griffiths. The first twelve tracks comprise the Iveys original LP release with the final four bonus tracks consisting of "No Escaping Your Love" (the B-side of "Dear Angie"), "And Her Daddy's a Millionaire" (the B-side of "Maybe Tomorrow"), and two then unreleased Pete Ham tracks--"Mrs. Jones" and "Looking for My Baby."

Longtime Badfinger fans will recognize nearly half of these tracks because seven of them were remixed for the MAGIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC LP (which found Joey Molland replacing Griffiths). These seven tracks--"Beautiful and Blue," "Dear Angie," "Fisherman," "Maybe Tomorrow," "Angelique," "I'm in Love" and "They're Knocking Down Our Home"--comprise the highlights. And on this debut album, Tom Evans has the strongest material with "Angelique," "Beautiful and Blue" and their first single "Maybe Tomorrow."

Pete Ham, who would become Badfinger's best songwriter, struggles with misguided material like the 30's-style ballad "They're Knocking Down Our Home," the psychedelic "I've Been Waiting" and pedestrain rockers like "See-Saw Grandpa" and "Sali Bloo." His best material is "I'm in Love" and "Mrs. Jones."

It's also worth noting that most of the tracks were produced by Tony Visconti (T. Rex, David Bowie). Five of the tracks were produced by Mal Evans (1, 2, 6 and 11) and "Looking for My Baby" was produced by the Iveys.

While as a whole the songs on this release don't hold up to the standards the band would set for itself in the future as Badfinger, this is an enjoyable artifact from the late-Sixties and a must-have purchase for any Badfinger fan. RECOMMENDED

3 out of 5 stars Early Apple curio.......2004-06-23

If you're the type of music lover who considers it necessary to find everything by the band you choose to obsess over, this is a disc for you. If you're a casual Badfinger fan you might be better off picking up a greatest hits collection or copies of the original Apple and Warner Brothers cd's. A lot of this stuff resurfaced on Badfinger's "Magic Christian Music" album, (the band's weakest recording if you don't count the Joey and Tommy 80's stuff,) and it wasn't particularly good then either. There are a few highlights, but they sound fairly thin compared to the band's later works.

5 out of 5 stars 35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24

You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.

"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.

Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.

In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-26

Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05

I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.

It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.

I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.

Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.

My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love the music.......2003-11-29

It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

5 out of 5 stars Moondog.......2002-05-16

I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

The Jackson 5's Third Album was not only that, it was their third in nine months. "I'll Be There," the signature ballad and the album's best track, was already ruling airwaves when the LP appeared. The meld of fuzz-tone guitar and soul harmonies on "Ready or Not (Here I Come)" and "Can I See You in the Morning" makes for sweet listening, as does a cover of the beach-music favorite "Oh How Happy." And "How Funky Is Your Chicken" is worthy of the Rufus Thomas hit it riffs on. "Goin' Back to Indiana," however, reeks of showbiz clichés, as does the next album's borderline-offensive "Honey Chile."

The laid-back Maybe Tomorrow nonetheless offers excellent ballad performances on its title single, "Never Can Say Goodbye," and Jermaine doo-wop showcases "16 Candles" and "She's Good." But the late-'71 hit "Sugar Daddy," included here as a bonus track alongside its flip, "I'm So Happy," proves that the once-fresh "ABC"/"Love You Save" lyric formula was running on fumes. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Great J5 CD!!!.......2006-09-07

My dad has both The Third Album and Maybe Tomorrow on lps, but I took the opportunity in purchasing this two in one disc since I do not personally own a record player. I sure got my money's worth. What made me love the Thrid Album was after watching the J5 cartoons back in 1996 on VH1 when they played most of the songs from the album.

Its a shame that only "I'll Be There" and "Mama's Pearl" were the only singles released from the album, but back then, most artists would release a maximum of two singles per album! I love "I'll Be There" and Mama's Pearl" but I love the lp tracks that were played on the cartoon such as the two Smokey Robinson covers, "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" and "Darling Dear" (B-side of "Mama's Pearl") plus "Reach In" and "How Funky Is Your Chicken" were the Rufus Thomas or early Parliment influenced tracks for the dancefloor! Maybe Tommorow was exceptional and I love most of the singles, but it couldn't compare to their previous album. I loved all the singles (title cut and the #2 "Never Can Say Goodbye"), plus "She's Good", "The Wall", "I Will Find A Way" and "It's Great To Be Here(sampled very frequently by the likes of Mariah Carey and The Notorious BIG)" All the other tracks from that album sucked, especially the Vandellas' cover of "Honey Chile" (Michael's hig-pitched voice on that one was funny though)! The bonus tracks were on point, especially the non-lp track slow jam, "I'm So Happy." This cd (mainly because of the Third Album) is a gift to many Jackson 5 fans and I'm glad I bought this one.

5 out of 5 stars Third Time Around - Two More Classic Albums.......2005-10-19

I bought this album at the sametime i purchased Diana Ross Presents.../ABC and Looking Through The Windows/Going Back To Indiana albums. But this middle set right here is the one I can enjoy the most. Starting off with "I'll Be There" all the way down to "I'm So Happy",Michael and Jermaine really show their vocal growth on these two albums. There's one particalar song on the Maybe Tomorrow album that really caught my attention was "Great To Be Here" cause i recognized the beat from the "All About The Benjimans" song by P. Diddy & The Family. Another interesting song is "She's Good" because of the drummer's consistant bass-high hat-snare drive almost throughout the ending of the song and Jermaine's smooth vocals coasting over the instruments. Jermaine also show the group again on lead vocals from "I'll Be There","Bridge Over Troubled Water","Maybe Tomorrow",and and my most played favorite "I'm So Happy". Michael also does a good job on the two albums also, but Jermaine Jackson is the MVJ (most vocal jackson) in this set.

4 out of 5 stars GROOVY.......2005-02-09

Yep this is one groovy cd. Maybe Tomorrow was always one of my fave J-5 albums. It has soooooo many great songs. Honey Chile, It's Great To Be Here, My Little Baby, Petals, The Wall, not to mention the title track. Third Album is not as good, IMHO. Whoever thought to have them remake "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a moron. How Funky Is Your Chicken, is a good tune though as is Reach In. Check this out. This is when the J5 were at their best.

4 out of 5 stars Classic J5.......2004-09-10

If you're a fan of the "classic" Jackson 5 (early, pre-pubescent Michael & bubblegum soul), this is a necessity. Then again, if that's the case, so is the "Diana Ross Presents.../ABC" compilation. This disc, the 3rd and 4th non-holiday albums from the group, features the group's biggest hit, "I'll Be There." It also features one of all-time favorite songs by anyone, "Never Can Say Goodbye." A third excellent ballad (and top 20 hit) is the title track to the "Maybe Tomorrow" album. Aside from the ballads, the J5 is presented at their most playful on these two albums. Songs such as "How Funky Is Your Chicken," "My Little Baby," and "Goin' Back to Indiana" allow the group to interplay more vocally, with light-hearted subject matter. "Sugar Daddy," a bonus cut and non-album single from late 1971, fits in this vein as well. While a maturing sound is heard in the lovely "Darling Dear" and the dramatic "Can I See you in the Morning" (both from "Third Album"), the group seems to revert back to the overtly bubblegum sound on the follow up, "Maybe Tomorrow" album. A few boring filler tracks pop up ("Oh How Happy," "I Will Find A Way," primarily), and Jermaine got a couple of those as well. That, however, is probably due to his reaching teen idol/sex symbol age, yet getting crappy love songs to make girls swoon. Despite the filler, these albums are important for their lasting influence. Recent R&B and hip-hop acts have uncovered these songs for samples (including Mariah Carey's cover of "I'll be there," the Fugees' "Ready or Not (Here I Come)," multiple covers of "Never Can Say Goodbye," and samples of "Maybe Tomorrow" and "It's Great to be Here"). This is a good glimpse of Motown's best before the great changes brought by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and disco.

5 out of 5 stars Third Album was the first 8 track we owned.......2002-05-07

The tracks on the third album are hard to forget. Reach In, I'll be there, Ready or not. This whole album is slammin' and its a collector's item.

5 out of 5 stars An extra star added for sound and presentation!.......2000-11-29

The J5's third and fourth albums are, of course, melodic, funky, and fun. The real treat here, though, is the care lavished on these recordings. If you've heard the old US-released Motown 2-on-1 CD's of the 1980's, you may recall how flat and claustrophobic they sounded. Not these UK reissues. The remastered sound is spacious, dynamic, and ultra-clean. Add to that the classy cardboard slipcovers over the slimline jewel cases containing full reproductions of the front and back LP cover artwork of both LPs and you'll wonder what's up with US Motown that the British are doing a better job with American soul music. Anyway, these two albums (one one CD) are out of print in the US, so you'll be doubly glad to spring for this reasonably-priced import.

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2000-11-08

THIRD ALBUM and MAYBE TOMORROW contain some of the J5's best non-singles from their early Motown years. They also represent a nice variety of music; on THIRD ALBUM, the big hits include "I'll Be There" and "Mama's Pearl." Some interesting covers are "The Love I Saw in You was Just a Mirage," "Oh How Happy," and a Jermaine lead, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." One of my favorites is "Can I See You in the Morning," which has the group sounding a little edgier. MAYBE TOMORROW features two beautiful hit singles, "Maybe Tomorrow" and "Never can say Goodbye." It also has a nice cover of "Sixteen Candles" with Jermaine singing the lead. Songs like "The Wall," "Petals," and "(We've got) Blue Skies" are all very catchy and have some decent lyrics. All in all, the material on these two albums is pretty ear-friendly. Songs such as "I'll Be There," "Ready or not (Here I Come)," "Maybe Tomorrow," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "It's Great to be Here" have all been covered by other artists and/or sampled in hits by other artists, which shows the influence of not only the J5 but of these albums. Anyone who likes catchy melodies should look into these albums!

I used to own a vinyl LP of this album. I was captured by the ethereal mood of the music. The cover reflects the cuts from the album, dreamy and reflective. Best cuts are Maybe tomorrow, And when I see your smile my day begins, Love theme (Missouri breaks), A boy named Charlie Brown, Send in the clowns. If you like mood music, traversing you on shores with waves lapping, this album will captivate you.
