Few modern rockers have managed to capture the ephemeral combination of sloppy and serious that earmarked the Band in its prime. That vibe--sounding four-beers casual during a soberly determined performance--accounts for the success of bluesy Big Head Todd & The Monsters; this Boulder, Colorado, group's jammy mix is simultaneously dirty and clean, offhanded and acute, backwoods and scholarly. It's nothing new, as these so-so concert-tracked numbers attest. But there's something there in the performance, a faint glimmer of bygone Band brilliance, that breathes life into pedestrian BHT standards such as "Tangerine," "It's Alright," and the breakthrough hit "Bittersweet." The crowd dutifully goes wild over every muddled note, however, picking up on that sloppy/serious thing more immediately in the flesh. As a live document, even a case for fame, Live Monsters will leave many scratching their befuddled noggins. Why these guys? And did we remember to turn the porch light on before we left for the show tonight? There are no clear-cut answers. Just a lot of jamming and that weird vintage vibe. --Tom Lanham

5 out of 5 stars Turned On.......2007-07-05

A while back we had both our sons and their families over for a BBQ. The lawnchairs were gathered around a campfire in the back yard. My 27 year old son says "It's time for some BHTM" and proceeded over to his pickup to throw in a CD. My 30 year old son said "Cool". I'm a fan of all types of music but had no idea what I was about to experience would become an obsession for me. Live Monsters is the BEST cd I have ever listened to. That night it played over and over and over again. We never tired. One son commented Live Monsters is the ultimate throw back a beer sitting round a fire music. I can't help but agree. I'm totally turned on to BHTM. Purchase this cd and you will be too.

Just can't emphasize enough how fantastic this record is and I am a MAJOR music fan always looking for truly great stuff. Deserves to be rediscovered by music lovers hungry for great music. Skip their studio stuff -- THIS is the record to have. I didn't discover these guys until well after their hey-day at radio. Had Calexico, Cat Power, Patty Griffin & Michael Franti's Yell Fire (all hightly recommended) in my player tonight & pulled this out. Blown away once again!!! Just fantastic.

Some of you do not know whether or not you like BHT&TM. I didn't like them that much prior to buying this CD. However, I was checking it out on iTunes last year and really liked what I was hearing. Yadda, yadda, yadda...

Honestly, I listen to this CD every morning while I get ready for work, and I have no no no regrets from buying the album. This is really an epic live rock recording. I saw them live in Sun Valley... this is a band that needs to be seen live. The cd is the next best thing. This CD captures the moment/feeling quite well. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars What every live album should be, let alone BHTM.......2003-11-12

Go ahead. Gas up the car. Check the oil while you're at it, 'cause when this gem spins down you're going to be someplace else entirely. From poignant (Bittersweet), through bluesy grinds(Broken Hearted Stranger) to speeding-ticket rockers (Resignation Superman, Circle) Todd and the Monsters deliver the kind of intelligence, hooks, and energy that define a road trip. Sure, there're a few clinkers - it's live college rock. If you want slick, stick with Steely Dan. Likely as not you'll be hoarse by the last track, though, and you'll wonder how Mohr keeps his expressive and flexible voice together through a full live set.
And there may be something to the idea that it's a Colorado thing - the Samples are another of that state's bands that can deliver at this level.

Stronger than truck stop coffee!

3 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-07-21

This is the kind of album that would rank about 7 out of 10. It is very good.

When you start to listen to Big Head Todd and the Monsters, it's the tinge of the delicate guitar work that affects you first. This album is no exception, as "Bittersweet," the band's largest hit, starts things off in a slow, patient groove.

As the collection moves, the songs begin to alternate between delicately laid-out blues tracks and crunching numbers like "Circle" and "Resignation Superman."

Inside all of it, Todd Park Mohr hurtles a certain beauty and dignity into all the songs, from the doomed but breathing relationship tale of "Bittersweet" to the angry and pained "Resignation Superman."

There are many songs that leave you singing along hours later, "It's Alright" and "Tangerine." There are songs that leave you spellbound by their hooks, "Bittersweet" and "Circle."

There are also a host of groove tunes that aren't much more than passable, "Vincent of Jersey" and "Leaving Song."

All in all, it is still more than worth a listen, though, showing what a good rock band does best, play guitar loud, play drums loud, play bass loud, and play them all well.

5 out of 5 stars Still Rocks.......2007-06-25

Hey, I have not listened to Gary in over 15 years, all I know this 55yr. old still rocks better than anyone. If you want a great blues-rock album this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Be Discouraged By The Other Reviews!!.......2004-08-25

First and foremost, Gary Moore stands alone when it comes to Les Paul, amps on "11", killer tube tone. Although the statement "Gary Moore's guitar playing is like Bluesbreakers era Peter Green on steroids" might not be politically correct, I think it will give you a little insight on what you can expect out of your speakers (home or car) when cranking this album.
Moore states right at the begining of the concert that the set list will be a little different from usual. What we get is a sampling of Moore's virtuosity whether it be blues, metal, or flat out rock 'n' roll. Very few guitarist can play so ferociously one minute and then gently the next (and with such technical brilliance) like Gary Moore.
The real treat, which makes this album a must have for any Thin Lizzy fan, is the version of the Phil Lynott song, "Don't Believe A Word". Moore states in the intro, the song was recorded in two versions (that being Thin Lizzy's version from "Johnny The Fox" and the one from Moore's solo album "Back on the Streets"). He proceeds to play the mellow ballad Lynott intended the song to be, but half way through Moore & the band break into a flat out rocking version of the song in which they sound so much like Thin Lizzy is scarey. It brought a huge smile to my face and ya know Phil was smiling too.
As far as this criticism this should be a double disc set or a longer show ....read the title. My guess is Moore's set at the Monsters of Rock only ran about an hour, hence we get one disc running about an hour. Let's just say quality not quantity in this case here. This show is extremely well recorded and mixed with each instrument blended perfectly. Actually I'd give this 4 1/2 stars if I could.
With so little high quality rock out there for consumption these days, this album is a breath of fresh air, albeit a short one. Any Gary Moore or Thin Lizzy fan deserves to add this cd to their cart ASAP. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Overpowering.......2003-11-21

Another amazing effort from the G-man. I've been a fan from day one. A lot of people will say that the vocals aren't up to snuff. But come on, the Guy is almost 52 years old. Take for what it's worth. Enjoy this gem because it's 3 guys and it's undubbed and Gary is breath taking as always.

3 out of 5 stars Way better than nothing . . ........2003-11-05

I always anxiously await any new Gary Moore material. I was especially juiced for this CD (and companion DVD) as Gary is so good live. I must admit to being a little disappointed but not because of his guitar playing.

1.) For some reason it sounds like an outdoor show. Which means it is missing that natural echo live shows in buildings usually have (which adds to the fullness of the sound). Also, audience noise usually seems more distant at an outdoor recording and seems rather distant here too. This is not so much a criticism as an observation.

2.) Song selection spans more than a generation and so the show seems to lack any real theme. This would be much more acceptable if it was a double length CD and each era of Gary's career was well represented. However, at only 10 tracks long this strategy is impossible, so the CD ends up sounding more like a live compilation disc rather than a cohesive and flowing single show. Blame the short set list on the fact that Gary must have been rather early on the playbill. His support status seems even more apparent by the rather reserved (dare I say dull) audience reaction throughout. Check out the DVD if you don't believe me.

3.) Lastly, Gary either forgot how to sing the older songs or he thought the P.A. was not working. He shouts out the vocal on many on the songs. This is probably the single most disappointing part of the CD. This is even more acute for me because I have heard Gary at his best (accepting the known limitations of his vocal skills). But this performance ain't even close.

3 out of 5 stars while my guitar often weeps.......2003-10-12

Made in CAN in 2003, Serial# 06076-84642-2, Playing Time 62:52

Have no fear, you won't get a Canadian pressing unless, like me, you buy it from Amazon.ca (I'm Canadian, eh!)

The music on this CD comes from the performance recorded in Glasgow on May 22 of 2003, and features Cass Lewis and Darrin Mooney, the same power trio as on the "Scars" album.

This recording is "untouched" and extremely well recorded. I've always been a good fan of Mr. Moore, and I must say that he's satified my cravings for emotionally charged guitar work (similarly to Jeff Beck before the 90s...)

We get quite a mixed bag of tracks here, covering a 25-year span (all the way back to the "Back On The Streets" album.)

Just like YES must perform "Roundabout" as an encore, we're dealt here with "Parisienne Walkways", a great but too often heard concert track that doesn't bring anything new to the portrait of the performance.

From the opening chords of "Shapes of Things", we know the band mean business: this isn't going to be a blues-only performance, and that's perhaps the unfortunate side of this concert: there are many style changes that would have been, in my opinion, more palletable on a double-disc (e.g. a "rock" disc, a "blues" disc) so you can choose which one you're in the mood for.

Gary Moore puts so much emotion in his guitar playing it often gives me goosebumps (or is that simply caused by the volume of my stereo).

Of special interest on this hour-long (too short) performance is the FANTASTIC rendition of the Phil Lynott-penned track "Don't Believe A Word": GM recorded it as a slow number on his "Back On The Streets" album, while THIN LIZZY recorded the straight-ahead rock track on "Johnny The Fox". This time, Gary and the band start it as a slow, bluesy track, and shift gear into "whoomph" mode after 4 and a half minutes... a killer version.

The 3 tracks originally recorded for Scars have an edgier sound, with as much wailing and sustain that he can extract from his guitar.

This CD is a great start for anyone unfamiliar with Gary Moore's multi-faceted musical career; but if you love the guy, you'll probably react the way I did after about an hour: is it already over???

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly entertaining.......2005-01-28

This is an amazing live concert. Todd Park Mohr is unbelievable on guitar as well as vocals. Reminds me of another favorite musician, Mark Knopfler. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the video and audio are not in sync. Its off just enough to notice. I think its because the audio recording wasn't that good. Anyway, I highly recommend as a fan of BHTM. Peace

4 out of 5 stars Another Live Big Head Todd.......2004-09-16

Being a fan of live CD's and of BHT&M's I couldn't wait to get this one into the player. It doesn't disappoint as the 1st track is "Dirty Juice" from the most recent studio recording, Crimes of Passion, to get the set rolling along nicely. From the most recent tour, recorded March 19 & 20, 2004 at The Fillmore in San Francisco it plays heavily from the latest studio release, but not at the expense of the older favorites which are evenly dispersed on the 2 disc set. As on the Live Monsters disc, Todd Park Mohr's guitar and vocals leads you through a tight set as he and the Monster's effortlessly flow from the hard edged "Come On" to the mellow "Bittersweet" and "It's Alright" and back again. While the band is indeed as good as ever, no new ground is broken here, with the exception of a great cover of Eric Clapton's "Forever Man" that has more than a hint of Slowhand's vocal styling, it is still a great live CD that will no doubt have you hitting the repeat button more than a couple of times. For long time fans this one is a must, although I will admit I was a bit disappointed the vocal talents of back-up singer Hazel Miller were not as prominent on this release as they were on Monster's, and that is a shame as she has an incredible set of pipes!! For those of you just discovering how great BHT&M's are live, I suggest you try Live Monster's first, and in addition to this fine set to get a complete feel for the live experience that Big Head Todd provides. Just a step below Live Monsters, but that is still way ahead of most bands. Get it, you won't be disappointed.
