The XXX-rated quartet Hoobastank arrives on this self-titled major-label debut as a nu-metal Weezer, though without anything as cheekily subversive as "Hash Pipe." The similarities lie more in Hoobastank's tight playing and vocal harmonies than in the overblown post-teen lyrics. In track after track, singer Douglas Robb is in crisis; whether he's intoning or yelp-rapping his words, they are never as articulate as the emergency-siren guitar of the punkish "Pieces." Even the grateful love song "Let You Know" is weighed down by an expectation of times "when I'm feeling like everything and -one is hurting me for something or other." Dude, get yourself a Popsicle. The album's 12-song sequence moves inexorably toward clichéd Limp Bizkit guitar riffs and one true change of pace, the spacy, Deftones-like "To Be with You." Unfortunately, its lyric is nothing more than a sensitive-guy attempt to convince a girl to "give in." Sweet. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars The Reason.......2006-12-03

It is refreshing to hear a band come along and destroy the airwaves with a fresh brand of alternative punk-rock. The single 'The reason' was their biggest (and only) hit in Australia and introduced me to the band. I was a little hesitant to buy an album from a band that I had never heard of before on the strength of only one song but I am so glad I did. The album is packed with more potential hits and while 'The reason' is probably the standout track on the album, songs such as 'Same Direction', 'What Happened To Us?', 'Unaffected' and 'Disappear' are right up their as memorable songs on the album too.

I imagine the band would sound awesome live, and I can only hope to see them live in Australia some day. If you are thinking about buying this CD, I highly recommend it. It will not go down as one of the greatest albums of all time or anuthing like that, and nor will the band be remembered as legends of rock n' roll, but this is high quality music, and an album which is good to listen too from beginning to end.

4 out of 5 stars "So what should I do, just lay next to you as though I'm unaffected?".......2006-05-08

A lot of people hate the song "The Reason". I'm not sure exactly why, I can understand finding the piano part repetitive or the vocals a little annoying, but I don't think it's worth such universal ire. I'm not in love with the song, but I like it for what it is. It's almost pure pop, but the rest of the album is more rock-oriented, and like the band's previous release, might not be for everyone but is pretty enjoyable all the way through.

The first two tracks are both singles and fit very well into Hoobastank's pattern. Pleasant singing, a bit of shouting thrown in, crisp musicianship, catchy choruses. "What Happened To Us?" has a decent guitar part and is one of the band's more passionate songs. "Escape" is a pretty catchy song, like many of the band's. "Lucky" is another of the band's atypical songs with natural sounding guitar strumming. "From the Heart" is another solid song musically. It's hard to find songs by Hoobastank you can't say that about.

There's a bit of a shift in tone after The Reason's title track. "Unaffected" is one of the best songs, it's slower paced than normal for the band and is easy to get caught up in. "Disappear" is another single, and I'm not a huge fan of it, but it shows the band is trying other things. I'm not sure why many rock fans are so down on Hoobastank, it's a little poppier and more accessible to the mainstream than a lot of bands but they still put together a good rock song. In any case, The Reason is a solid follow-up to Hoobastank's first big release.

2 out of 5 stars hoobastank need i say anymore .......2006-02-16

you can see by the name that this band is aother coporate creation to the masses of 10 year old girls tryin' to be hip
and weepin' at the sickly lyrics of "the reason" god when i first heard that song i cried..not because it's a beautiful poetic song with passion and superb word-play it's because it made me nauseous i was ready to spill my guts on the breakfast i'd just ate
are these guys tryin' to be hip or are just marketted to sell
buckle loads of records to the mtv for the price of the decency of rock and roll
i one know it's the second

there name hooba-stank is a double edged sword because
when music fans see the name and cd on their local cd stores
they think "well they've got to be good because they've got stank in their name and any band they purposely puts stank in their name is gonna be bad right?" WRONG

yet if you like it then that's okay we all have different tastes in music and that's what makes un indivudual...

1 out of 5 stars another loser band.......2006-01-22

Hooba...stank...stinks and will always stink. I don't know about the rest of the CD, but listening to The Reason is about as pleasant as sticking your hand into a running garbage disposal. I'm not a perfect perrrrsssonn. Egad!

5 out of 5 stars The Reason to love this band!.......2005-10-24

Hoobastank's second studio release is exactly what anyone expects from any band; an expansion of their sound, while still sounding like themselves. "Same Direction" opens the album very much the same way "Crawling in the Dark" did their last. The band steps into harder ground with "Out of Control" which features screaming vocals from lead singer Douglas Robb and guest background vocals from Lostprophets. "What Happened to Us?" asks that very question about a broken relationship. "Escape" opens with a catchy drum solo and doesn't slow down after that. Opening with a sustained note from the last track, "Just One" is a track with echoed verse lyrics of "I want to..."'s and "I need to..."'s that fans will love. The opening acoustics of "Lucky" show the track's supposed sound...until the chorus breaks out everything the band has. Rise-from-the-fall track "From The Heart" raises an assignment to rebuild lost dreams. Hit and title track "The Reason" is easily the softest side of the band seen to date, and is a touching track that will open the soft-loving side of even the band's harder fans. "Let It Out" kicks off with a scream from Doug and later launches a chorus that is instantly singable. "Unaffected" sends a message of almost-lost hope, asking what to do about the problems that are being faced. "Never There" hits on the problems of an apathetic love. When "Disappear" comes around, fans should know they're getting another hit. Lyrics that anyone can relate to and a pure, simple melody give this track power over any listener. Overall, a definite recommendation of mine!

4 out of 5 stars Highly addictive refreshing rock and roll.......2006-12-03

After purchasing and loving 'The Reason', I went out and tracked down this debut album from Hoobastank. I imediately fell in love with it after one listen and found myself listening to it many times again. While not quite as good as the follow up, this CD still gets good rotation in my CD collection. Standout tracks are 'Crawling In The Dark', 'Running Away', 'Pieces' and my fave Hoobastank song 'To Be With You'.

The songs are short, but the new brand of refreshing punk/rock is addictive and while so many bands of the same mould come and go, I get the feeling Hoobastank may hang around for awhile.

4 out of 5 stars There's much more for us to see.......2006-09-02

Hoobastank's major label debut, Hoobastank, has remained their best major release in my mind. The Reason was great until they more or less sold out by playing up The Reason (single not CD). Every Man For Himself is good, if a little familiar, with few standout tracks. So while this self titled affair is a little too poppy at times I still enjoy revisiting it from time to time.

I was a fan from the first time I heard Crawling In The Dark so of course I'm a bit more privy to this release than any others (except Basketball Shorts). But 5 years later I still think this is a completely solid rock CD. From the hard edged tracks such as Remember Me, Pieces, and Better to great downplayed rock tunes like Running Away, Let You Know, and Hello Again, this CD is proof that mainstream isn't always a bad thing.

I see people throwing around comparisons to Incubus, and while I've heard the two bands are friends, aside from a few subtle influences in the guitars and vocals I don't see it. Doug has a very distinctive voice, one that seems tailor made for a band like this, and Dan's guitar work, while definitely not jaw dropping, is by all means passable, even churning out a few memorable parts. As for Chris and Markku on bass and drums, they're more or less just there, not bad but nothing to write home about.

My favorite songs are Remember Me, Better, Up And Gone, Too Little Too Late, and Hello Again. Hoobastank isn't lacking in the catchiness department but even after two more CDs I still think they need some work in the originality department. They have distinctive music and all but you just know they're holding something back. So whenever they go all out and make the record they were destined to I'm sure I'll stop comparing each CD they release to this one. But until then this will remain my favorite major label release from the boys.

5 out of 5 stars Big Time New Rock Album.......2006-07-15

An album filled to the brim with high-throttle, super-charged anthems, almost all of which could have been released as a single with success back in '01. Although a lot of post-Grungers have forgotten the band after the radio hype of `The Reason' (song) died out and the frustration of their photocopy sophomore effort (The Reason, album) set in, I still listen to Hoobastank on a regular basis, especially `Crawling in the Dark.' I will look back on 00's music in years to come and this one will stand out as one of my all-time favorites; a true anthem that should be included in every new-age Rock list. `Running Away' lingers in `Crawling in the Dark's' shadow, but still remains one of Hoobastank's best songs. Same goes for `Let You Know' and `Hello Again'; the problem's that the masses forget about these mountainous numbers because they were, again, never released as singles. That's really a crying shame because these have more quality than about 90 percent of the garbage singles released in the past couple years. I have to say that I find little to no enjoyment in `Pieces' and `To Be With You', both of which were missed upon editing. However, both `Remember Me' and `Give it Back' add a pleasant surprise at each end of the album. So, in the end, I award Hoobastank five stars for two focused reasons: 1) I can't find any serious fault with Hoobastank even though there are some low quality tracks and 2) `Crawling in the Dark' appeals so much to me.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the Classic, Boycott the Spastic..........2006-07-11

Classic: This IS Hoobastank. Great songs, intelligent arrangements. Tight syncopations, memorable hooks. Surprises. This album involves the listener, creating a sonic energy vacation away from whatever is getting you down.

Spastic: The Every Man For Himself CD. Remeber the Hooters from Philly? Twenty plus years ago they had the most original, interesting, and super cool sound going. They were the local rave until they got their deal and instantly sold out to the producers, their few radio-aired songs smacking of mediocrity. They lost their local following, who knew their capabilities, and sold some records to people who had no clue as to the true tallent of this band.

At least we got two excellent CDs out of the Hoobs before they aspired to the mediocrity of the aptly titled and totally limp Every Man for Himself. I cannot say enough bad about that CD. If you have ears, and value creativity, leave THAT CD to the braindead. You do send a message with your purchases. Tell Hooba to start taking their steroids again and impress us with some real tunes!!

4 out of 5 stars "Will I ever get to see the ending to my story?".......2006-05-07

When I first saw the video for "Crawling in the Dark", the first single from Hoobastank's self-titled first album, I had a few thoughts. First, I enjoyed the song. But I also noticed some similarities to my then undisputed-favorite band, Incubus. The singer sounded a little similar and also tended to not wear a shirt. The music itself shared a few similarities, although it was quicker paced and catchier than the average Incubus song. Incubus has since gone in a completely different direction musically, but Hoobastank continues to do what they've been doing ever since that first song.

Hoobastank doesn't go out of its way to try new things, they just do what they know how to do. They make catchy rock songs that are easy to listen to and tend to be hated by real music fanatics. It doesn't bother me that a lot of people dislike it, it's not like I adore the band, I just like listening to their songs. The first three tracks on Hoobastank are all singles. "Remember Me" is another fast paced, enjoyable song like "Crawling in the Dark", "Running Away" is a bit different in style, with more natural sounding music and a different tone. "Pieces" is another good, fast song, and one of the harder ones on the album.

"Up and Gone" just might be my favorite song by the band. It's the most unique one on the CD, has moments of hardness and softness, and a good chorus. The last part of the album is generally a bit slower and less in your face than the beginning. The lyrics are also generally a little nicer in the back end. The final track goes back to the other style though, and is pretty hard, and a little dumb. Although they do interrupt it before it ends and there's a sound clip of the band making fun of it, and it's actually pretty funny. Hoobastank isn't the best or most innovative band in the world, but as long as you can accept that, they make a pretty darn good pop-rock song.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2007-06-26

I was first introduced to Hoobastank by my wife who had heard "The Reason" on the radio. I bought The Reason for her but I became an instant fan. I read some bad reviews about Every Man for Himself (obviously by losers) and like a fool, I listened. After nearly wearing out The Reason, I decided to take a chance and get EMFH. This is by far the best music I have ever heard. There are so many flavors in the music on this CD that it leaves me completely satisfied. As much as I love The Reason, I love EMFH even more. It's almost like they were in my head when they wrote the songs; I can relate to every song. EMFH has proven that Hoobastank has talent way beyond what most bands even dream about. The lyrics are powerful, the music is powerful. This CD is absolutely at the top of my list of favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Different Style, Still Same Hoobastank.......2007-05-17

Initially, I was disappointed with this album. But, all it took was some time (about a week) for it to grow on me. Now, I think EMFH is totally awesome! "Born To Lead" and "Inside Of You" are my favorite songs, but the rest are also really sweet.

I highly recommend that you get the two bonus tracks "Finally Awake" and "Waiting", because they add another level of greatness to the album.

EMFH differs from the first two albums in musical style, but if you give it a chance, then you'll come to enjoy all that THIS album has to offer.

1 out of 5 stars reeks.......2007-04-14

Another good rock band killed by a lame ballad (hello, The Reason). In short, let me sum up my review of their newest album in three simple words:

it totally blows.

3 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2007-04-11

I was extremely excited to get this CD in since their self titled album was good and the Reason album was outstanding. This album strays away from the Hoobastank sound that people love. The songs are much calmer and slower, they don't contain as much quality guitar playing. The last track, "More than a memory" is a big letdown because the last track from The Reason, "Disappear" is probably Hoobastank's best song and I was hoping the same would be the case in this CD. It seems like Hoobastank has lost their energy and sound in this CD. Hopefully they realized this and go back to their original sound for their next CD.

5 out of 5 stars still kickin' a little @$$.......2007-02-15

I saw them live on Guam and they tore it up.

The song "inside of you" is an instant favorite of mine. I play it over and over again while I dance around my living room in my underwear.

4 out of 5 stars Worse than the other two... but it's still pretty decent.......2007-05-07

I used to listen to the Self Titled and The Reason album all the time, but for this album i can't stand some of the songs like More than a Memory which is very boring. At first I thought this album was going to suck because If I Were you sucked and Born to Lead isn't very good either. Inside of You is alright though. The good songs on this album are First of Me, Moving Forward, First of Me, Good Enough, and If Only. I used to like all their songs which made Hoobastank one of my favorite bands i've ever listened to, but this album kinda disappoints me. It's like any other album I have now, I think i'm too generous to give it a 4... but hoobastank rocks so... yea...

They have a song called Face the Music on Myspace which is pretty good. I wanna get it but i can't find it anywhere...

I like their new stuff way more than the old, and the album flows really nice, but I'm not the biggest Hoobatank fan. But honestly, I do like it, some of the tracks sound the same, but all in all, I'm not diappointed lol.

1 out of 5 stars "The Reason" rock music is in the @#$% hole.......2006-11-12

Sorry guys, I loved Hoobastank ever since they first came out and up until this album...but let's face it...this is trash and the only people who give this more than 3 stars are probably obsessed fanatics who beat off every time they hear "the reason"...It's good bands like this making BAD albums like this that account for rock music being on the decline..or as I like to call it : IN THE S***HOLE!

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent.......2006-07-16

Now I personaly liked The reason, and saddly havn't listened to the self tittled cd so I can't compare, but....
This one is awesome.
First off, since no one that I read reviews, mentioned inside of you. While it deffinatley isn't a little kids song, its deffinatley a song that shows a bit more truthfullness to the music, and the beat gave me an old Jamiriquai(sp) feeling.
Don't tell me, Never saw it comming, and the others were nothing short of good.
But the other two songs that stuck out in my mind were Born to lead and it's overreppeated courus, and the first of me, which actualy reminds me of Linkin park in some ways.
All in all a worthwhile buy.

You know I haven't heard much from this cd, although I did hear some and it sounded good. This is a great band that already has two cds out. The first was in the late 1990's and it was called "They sure don't make basketball shorts like they used to". Then the other one that came out in late 2001 is the self-title. The first cd is cool as hell because the bass player plays his saxophone and the songs have a good hook all of them. If you can don't download their stuff because that's stealing and if you really like them then support them. Go now spend your money on Hoobastank staffus k?

My brother turned me on to this band and i think they're awesome! He took me to a show, and i just had to get they're cd. I hav'nt taken it out my player since i bought it! I can't wait to see what else they put out.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome band, amazing CD........2004-10-23

The name of the disk may be misleading but this guy's vocals are incredible! There isn't much screaming, but if you ask me, he dosen't need to scream through the whole album cause he has a great voice. The music is remaniscent of incubus and tool at times but has something else to it that i can't define. Whatever it is I like it. I love this band, but if your looking for some straight up death metal screaming noise...look elsewhere.

It's about time that a Hard Rock act released a CD with a lead singer that actually has some talent. This CD Kicks A**! ALL of the songs are Tight not just the standard one or two for radio play. Each one has it's own tale to tell and I can't wait for the next one. I don't know what the guy in the last review is complaining about...Oh..it might be that he prefers most of the clearing throat incoherant dribble that the rest of the Hard rock Rabble is playing...here is a thought...when you can do better...please do...and let's hear it...I'll buy it if it is. Scream As Needed is definitely worth the price!

Okay. First of all, when your band is called "Nemesis 3" and your album is called "Scream as Needed," it's usually expected of you to bring some kind of aggression or danger to your music. Maybe even a little actual screaming. Too bad these guys completely fail at it. For the entire album, all the lead singer does is pout about how people don't like him, people care too much about money, his girlfriend doesn't love him and blah blah blah we've heard it all before so shut the hell up!

Now if they could just be inspired to write some decent songs, that would be a different story. But of course they don't. There's nary a decent riff to be found on this album, let alone a melody. Although after half an album of aimless sophomoric self-pitying "rocking," "Head" is actually kind of good. Unfortunately, that doesn't come close to redeeming the whole.
