Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best of..... Joan Jett.......2007-07-01

Good compilation. Every Jett hit on one CD. And I particularly like the addition of "World of Denial", from the 'pure and simple' Japanese IMPORT CD. Now what about "Here To Stay" and "Hostility"?

4 out of 5 stars Why we all love Rock and Roll.......2007-06-04

Now that Joan Jett is getting her due as a seminal rock and roll influence, it's about time a decent hits set appeared. Sadly, this isn't it. While the music on "Fit To Be Tied" certainly merits the four star rating, I am going to have to assume contractual issues with CBS forced Jett to either omit or substitute alternative versions of well-known songs.

For instance, her huge hit "I Hate Myself For Loving You" is an alternate take from the "Up Your Alley" version, and "Little Liar" is a live version. I am not sure how many versions of "Roadrunner" Joan has recorded so far, but the take here is previously unreleased and kicks butt. So does the new recording of the signature Runaways song, "Cherry Bomb." MIA are such well known Jett tunes as "Good Music" and her version of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." The albums she recorded for Warner Brothers are bypassed entirely.

Nonetheless, you still get some of the great proto-grrll rock from "Bad Reputation" to the terrific new "World of Denial." Joan Jett also was queen of the perfect cover choice, as her hit versions of "Everyday People," "Crimson and Clover" and - of course - "I Love Rock and Roll" prove. She also had that glam bam done like few before or since. The BOOM/whack/BOOM/whack that explodes from her cover of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch" and her own "I Hate Myself For Loving You" made both songs burst from whatever radio played them some eight years apart. You'd be hard pressed to know that much time had passed between these songs...which proves that Joan Jett is a timeless artist.

But she deserves better. There is a good Japanese compilation that covers all the albums up to "Naked" (which eventually formed the base of "Sinner"), called "Jett Rock: Greatest Hits of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts." It boasts a pretty hefty price tag, so if you're just a casual fan looking for "I Love Rock and Roll," this will do. If not, hit that link.

4 out of 5 stars Joan Jett.......2007-05-25

This is a great disc. It includes songs I didn't even know she did along with cool cover tunes. It's all good!

3 out of 5 stars not a masterpiece.......2007-04-06

There are many songs missing to be a definitive collection, so, to me, it's not definitive. It is good that they added the 'hit' versions of LITTLE LIAR & I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU instead of the inferior versions that were on the 1997 edition of this cd. They also changed the cover. I guess a raven-haired Jett is more sell0able than a buzzed/peroxided Jett?

3 out of 5 stars I love Joan Jett.......2007-04-02

And this does have all her greatest hits, from Cherry Bomb to I Love Rock'n'Roll.
My complaint, though, and it's a big one, is that it won't play in my computer. I know artists have a problem with people illegally downloading music, etc. But it's a real pain when you actually pay money for a cd and then can't listen to it wherever you want to. I should be able to play this at my desk and I can not. It's irritating to no end. I wish these cds had warning labels so I'd know not to bother with them.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated singer with a phenomenal voice!!!.......2007-02-20

James Ingram to me is one of the best singers of all time. His voice is very unique, and I love the fact that he doesn't have to riff in any of his songs. Listen to songs like How do you keep the Music Playing, and Baby, Come to Me, and you will see what I mean. James, come back out with a new album!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you're only going to buy 1 Jimmy Buffet Cd..........2001-10-10

This one really has all the songs most people are looking for, i.e. "Maragritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," etc.

5 out of 5 stars All the Great Hits, and then some.......2000-12-07

This is the greatest hits album for confirmed Parrotheads. I turned in my copy of the American greatest hits album, "Songs You Know By Heart," years ago. This import adds, to my mind, two songs that are better than much of SYKBH: "Last Mango in Paris," which is a classic rocking singalong and the expatriate's theme song, "Banana Republics," which will bring a lump to the throat of anyone who's lived a few thousand miles from their birthplace.

While I usually just raid my Buffett collection to create mix tapes, "All the Great Hits" manages to be a great mix on its own, and is one of Buffett's few albums I just drop into the CD player and listen to straight, over and over.

A must have for Parrotheads and well worth the extra money.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.....Buffett's Best.......1999-08-06

Really captures Buffett's best work. Although everything he does touches the soul. He is truly an American legend. Music that makes Margaritaville a state of mind.

5 out of 5 stars great.......1999-03-10

One of Buffett's best CD's. It has all the great hits

1 out of 5 stars For the non Parrot Head but still wanting great music.......1998-12-05

Jimmy's music on this CD is outstanding as usual (five stars), this is a good CD for someone who wants to get a taste of his music but isn't a diehard fan. All these songs are on his non-import releases. If your a serious collector you already have these great songs so there is no reason to add this CD. For the music lover who wants a variety of music from a great artist this ones for you - who knows you may be back to become a collector of all the Buffett originals.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2006-02-20

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Excellent italian music. Reminiscint of my early days in New York with the Italian-American genre of music.

5 out of 5 stars the greatest Italian singer ever.......2006-05-22

First of all, the best Italian-American album ever. Put this in the CD player, pour a glass of wine, sit by the pool, add a little salami, provolone, and tender olives, lite the porch lites out back, and you are back listening to the songs Mama and Papa sang. This CD is so good you cant stop listening to it. I am not kidding. My kids listen to it with me. Mt father-in-law and I would sit by the pool every Sunday night, sip wine and listen to Jerry...it was heaven on Earth...and I miss those nights so much...buy this CD and see for yourself...you will know exactly what I mean. The memories are all we have left. Come join me.

Trying to fit Pantera's music onto a greatest hits compilation is like trying to see how many bulbs you can take out of a string of Christmas lights and still have it run: it ain't happening.

That being said, I feel a little let down by this record. Not only in the music, but the video collection. At the very least, the video for "Planet Caravan" could just as easily have fit onto the bonus DVD. Music wise, there were many great songs from COWBOYS FROM HELL (most notably "Primal Concrete Sledge" and "Psycho Holiday") that were left out, and similarly, any of the following: "A New Level" and "F***ing Hostile" from VULGAR, "Strength Beyond Strength" from DRIVEN, "Suicide Note, Pt. 2" from TRENDKILL, and "It Makes Them Disappear" from STEEL, could have gone here (especially that LAST one, since they stuck "I'll Cast a Shadow," the track that "Disappear" fades into on the STEEL album, onto BEST OF) and made this greatest hits collection a little more potent.

Additionally, they didn't go all the way with the title of this record: it needs to be something like THE BEST OF PANTERA: FAR BEYOND THE GREAT SOUTHERN COWBOYS' VULGAR 101 PROOF STEEL HITS!

Then again, whenever a band releases an "official" greatest hits collection, some fans somewhere are always going to be left out. If you think this is an excellent collection, more power to ya. Everyone has a right to his/her opinion. But personally, this greatest hits record isn't really that great to me. However, there's always room for a greatest hits, volume 2, perhaps?

5 out of 5 stars Love these cowboys from hell.......2007-01-10

If you are a Pantera fan. This album is a must have. Has all thier hits plus bonus video. Got it for my husband for christmas. He absolutely loved it. Great addition to a well rounded music collection.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like it, then don't buy it!.......2006-12-25

I happen to think this a great collection of Pantera songs from the first song to the last. I can't help but laugh when I see so many people giving it 4 out of 5 stars, and then complaining about the songs that are on it. With as many good songs that the band came out with, there's no posible way they could do a "Best Of" CD that would please everybody. We all have our own opinion of what songs would be best for this type of CD, but I doubt any two are exactly alike.

I've been listening to Pantera from the first song they ever played on the radio, and happily I'm still listening to them today. Hearing about the unfortunate death of "Dimebag Darryl" was a major blow to a lot of fans, and IMO, having this CD as a part of your collection is one of the smartest purchases a person could make. Many people don't think Planet Caravan should have been on this CD, but I actually like the idea of having a song like this so as to give my ears (and brain) a momentary break. I guess you could say I was in a "Comfortably Numb" place the first time I heard the song, so it brings back a lot of good memories for me anyway.

Bottom line: look at the songs listed on this CD, listen to the samples they have here, and then decide for yourself whether it's a good collection or not........if not, then don't buy it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the bonus DVD.......2006-11-16

From the greatest heavy metal band of all time, comes Reinventing Hell:The best of Pantera. However, I don't believe that this is actually the 'best of' Pantera, there are a lot better songs out there by the band. These songs just being the best of the commercially released singles. I would suggest buying the entire catalogue of Pantera albums if you don't already own them and get right into their music. For all fans, this is more of a worthwhile purchase for the bonus DVD, which features 10 music videos plus a couple of live bonus tracks, it is worth the money for the DVD alone. It also includes a 14 page colour booklet with pictures and a brief timeline and bio of the band. A good summary of a long successful career.

4 out of 5 stars If you've never heard Pantera before..........2006-11-09

Then you should just buy Cowboys From Hell. While most of the songs on here are good, it isn't a good sample of their best work. I would replace Drag The Waters, I'll Cast A Shadow, Planet Caravan, This Love, and Becoming with, say, The Great Southern Trendkill, Message in Blood, Hellbound, Clash With Reality, and A New Level...maybe something different, but clearly not a great selection. This I would recommend to fans for 2 reasons; firstly, Cat Scratch Fever is amazing; this is a great song, and the cover makes it heavier, cleaner, and cooler, as well as Hole in the Sky, a cover of the old Sabbath song. It's heavier, but lacks the vibe of the original. Still, a good song. The second reason is the videos. While they all suck, I'm guessing hardcore fans (and with Pantera there's no other kind) will still want them.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

1 out of 5 stars If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

4 out of 5 stars The Bees Knees.......2007-05-13

This is a great album. It has all of the Mills Bros. Favorites and the recordings are clear and well produced. If you buy one Mills Brothers album, this is the one to have. I'd also recommend Command Performance as a great record.

4 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2006-11-17

I bought this album for my 82 year-old grandmother who hadn't heard this music in decades. Needless to say she loved it. Surprisingly though I love listening to it too. Great voices and innocent writing. It is good to listen to pioneers and see where Black music has gone through the decades. Great buy!

5 out of 5 stars "22 Great Hits by The Mills Brothers".......2005-09-09

I purchased this CD because it included several songs I had wanted for a long time, but upon listening to the entire disc, I was very pleasantly surprised to recognize other songs I liked that I didn't know were by the Mills Brothers, and also some songs I'd never heard at all but liked immediately. The Mills Brothers have such a nice, easy-going style, and the quality of their musicianship comes through in each and every song. The album also covers their very long career - from about 1929 right up through the 1960s - and though the styles may change, the level of their quality is always top-notch. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys songs from those eras.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite.......2005-02-22

I would like to learn how singers, not just the Mills Brothers, can record songs for a certain record company, collect their royalties and then some years later re-record them (after their old contract is up?) and come up with a tired lackluster "too-good-to-be-true" compilation that doesn't match the first versions at all in performance. But here you have it. If you have no recollection of the originals, these will do for you; if you're looking for the old orchestrations (the guitar should fall in right here) and gusto, forget it. Try another compilation.

5 out of 5 stars familiar melodies, wonderful harmonies.......2004-06-30

The Mills Brothers started back in 1922, and their musical magic lasted through generations of music lovers. This CD was released in 1985, and I imagine the recordings hail from the 1957-81 period, when Herb, Harry, and Don (pictured on the cover) worked as a trio, appearing on popular TV shows and touring the country. Though the sound reflects a little age, it is nevertheless quite good.
In this compilation, you get updated versions of their first huge hit from 1931, "Tiger Rag", which features some terrific scat singing, their biggest mega-hit from '43, "Paper Doll", and their last # 1 hit from '52, "Glow Worm", as well as their last single to hit the charts in 1968, "Cab Driver".

One of my favorite songs is "Daddy's Little Girl", and their rendition is fabulous, and makes the most of its glorious melody and sweet, sentimental lyrics. Other choice tracks are "Lazy River, the wistful "You Always Hurt the One You Love", and "Cooney Island Washboard", which features some superb honkey tonk piano playing.
Smooth and lighthearted, this is truly great American music. The Mills Brothers were musical pioneers, and deserve their legendary status and their title as "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World"
Total running time is 58'40.

4 out of 5 stars Waste Rock Ranger!.......2007-03-10

Good collection! Has the long awaited b-side "Wasted Rock Ranger!" Only complaint is that it doesn't have enough songs from the album "hooked". Other wise it would be perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best of.......2006-07-08

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago in 1987 I bought the single "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" on a cassette because I couldn't wait for the album to be released. On the B side of "OBTS" was this little ditty called "Wasted Rock Ranger". Well I listened to "WRR" more than "Once Bitten". Go figure. Now, imagine my disappointment when the CD came out and it DIDN"T!! have "Wasted Rock Ranger" on it. Years & years passed and then finally one day I found a release of it on this CD. I may not have purchased this elsewise because I already own a "Best Of". Thank goodness I did buy this - it is the best of the best of Great White. I have always loved this band and then I fell in love with them again when I got this CD into my player. I love, love, love the extended version of "Face The Day". The live stuff on here really rocks too. Great White is up there in my favorite band category. Put it in and you want to listen to them all day and all night. (Peat & Reapeat, YEAH!)

4 out of 5 stars The best from the best.......2006-02-02

Great White in my mind is one of the greatest bands ever to play hard rock/heavy blues music. They are right there with the likes of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Thier music, while not the most groundbreaking, was pure and filled with emotion. Anyone of the tracks on this greatest hits collection is a song that fits a mood. Once Bitten, Twice Shy puts you in that feel good mood. Songs like House of Broken Love and Mista Bone are perfect for that early morning drive through south eastern California and by the time you got into las Vegas there was songs like Rock Me and Lady Red Light. Great music for all good times

I just love this band and it really upsets me that when most people hear the name Great White, they will think of the Tragedy that killed 100. I try to forget that sad day, but for the band, that is not an option. The fact of the matter is that they should have been rock icons by 2003 and not playing death traps like that place in Rhode Island. Now, I see that people are making jokes about that day. Do people have any care for anyone?

That is not the point. This is one of the greatest bands in the last 25 years and this CD is good for starters that would like to hear something that is greatly under-rated

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2006-01-15

The cd was purchased as a Christmas gift and I assume everything was fine with it. Your service was excellent and was received in a timely manner. Thank you

5 out of 5 stars Best Cover of all time.......2005-10-10

Suffice it to say, this cd has all of the familiar Great White stand-bys, "Once bitten twice shy, "Afterglow" (live). But what this cd has that no other cd in the world does (and I know because I've looked high and low for it), is a cover of Led Zepplin's "Babe I'm Leavin' you." Now, I know what you are thinking; "Hey, there is a version of that cover on another Great White compilation cd!" This is true. However, that version on the other compilation was performed on stage at a huge outdoor concert and the only thing that sounded worse than the band being out of time was the terrible mixing from the sound board. The version I am referring to was taped for "MTV Unplugged." I have never been a huge fan of Great White. They are a good band with a considerable amount of talent, write well, and are great musicians, but when they performed that cover on "Unplugged", they captured, in that song, the passion and intense regret and pain that Robert Plant had intended but could not convey as well. Robert Plant is a legend, an icon of rock, a master of phrasing, arranging, and not not without passion of his own and even he said when asked about the cover that he wished he could have done as good a job on that song originally!!! The price for this disc is more than worth it for just that track. Highest recommendation!!!
