The early word was that Silverchair--who at one time could have adopted the hip-hop moniker Lil' Nirvana--on their long-awaited fourth album had morphed into the antipodean Radiohead. But that's a bit of a stretch. Diorama, the band's first release in three years, instead finds the Australian trio shedding the hollow teen angst and beefy riffs of its earlier records in favor of epic melodies, meaningful lyrics, and a markedly more refined sound. The results are staggering. Featuring an orchestra section arranged by Van Dyke Parks, "The Greatest View" is a sweeping and soulful anthem. "World upon Your Shoulders" is a Guns 'N' Roses-caliber power ballad--and that's no bad thing, either. And "Without You" exhibits a determined, gripping delicacy not seen since, well, the last Radiohead album. Another giant leap forward. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Diorama.......2007-06-27

I am an "old lady" listening to this on the recommendation of my son. Except for one or two songs this is a great album. My son said some of the songs were "Paul McCartneyish" and I agree and that is a good thing. I love it when I am introduced to new, good music.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Well Done.......2007-06-13

Quick overview of the album:
Intricate orchestration, fantastic chord progressions, an apparently new style of songwriting/composition, with intricate melodies and harmonies, and the angelic vocals of Daniel Johns, come together with pristine mixing and production, culminating in a totally cohesive, outside the box journey through possibilities in music. Diorama is easy enough on today's ears that any layman should enjoy it thoroughly, yet complex enough to tickle the finely tuned senses of any musician. To call it progressive would be inappropriate only as there are already connotations attached to the word. (The album is not progressive compared to, say, Dream Theater's "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory.") Daniel Johns, singer, guitar player, and songwriter, has described the album as "escapist," adding that he wanted to take the listener out of his/her world and into the colorful realms you will find in this album.

Johns' lyrics, generally simple and straightforward earlier in his career, have come to the point of poetry and intriguing riddles.

Tracks to hit:
"Across the Night", "Tuna in the Brine", and "After All These Years" are the most intricate and wonderful, followed by "My Favourite Thing" and "Luv Your Life."

Track reviews:
1. Across the Night
A sweeping two-part epic, in which Johns sings of his coming to peace/falling in love with the world which for so long seemed only to haunt and hurt him. Beginning with a nice harpsichord and vocal intro, the orchestra comes in with a bang and away we go, escaping into a "world within a world" (Johns' definition of diorama). In the glorious second part of the song, Johns perhaps expresses his feelings about being in a serious relationship.

2. The Greatest View
The first single of the album, melodic and relatively simple, a pleasant rock ballad.

3. Without You
Rock with poetic imagery, written in three, or six. The Chorus is a straight up rock waltz. A cool song, noteworthy on its own, though in this album, it may be considered a sort of lull, although its bridge is particularly nice.

4. World Upon Your Shoulders
A climbing, sympathetic, and encouraging piece, urging the listener to do what [one] can when one can bring one's self to do it, only put much more nicely. Ye of waning spirit, find an understanding soul reaching through these words! Perhaps this song shows us how Daniel climbed out of his bleak world view into a broader, more loving and accepting state of being.

5. One Way Mule
Dirty, Sexy, Gravel-voiced, Heavy, Slow, Sweaty. Hot. Good work. (Swoon)

6. Tuna in the Brine
Wonderfully, intricately, articulately orchestrated, this aquamarine epic dares to explore the dark, briny depths of addiction, deception, and fear. Sunlight trickles in through the surface from time to time, but we are definitely underwater here. This wonderful piece turns the listener around so many times with unexpected, disorienting, sophistocated changes that both chill and delight, putting shivers to the bone and goosebumps upon the flesh, that, pummelled by the crashing waves, we find ourselves near ocean floor, amongst the kelp, floating upright, captivated by bubbles rising, so deep that it may be difficult to tell which way is up; mercifully, Johns, Gillies, Joannou, Mac, and Parks guide us back through the murky, benthic depths to the sunlit surface; the build toward the climax a gulp of fresh air, but in the end, we are not off the hook...Johns leaves us with a haunted warning, and we are left floating...

7. Too Much Of Not Enough
A brief guitar intro soothes the unease and washes the palate clean of saltwater. A pleasant, yet burdened beginning builds to a chorus that is one of the hardest on the album. Lyrics also suggest that addictive behaviour was an inspiration for the song. Ends hauntingly.

8. Luv Your Life
One of the (Australian) radio favorites of the album, beautiful, charming. ('Doot Doot's even!) Lots of beauty between vocal harmonies and orchestra. More insightful than ever, words take us deeper into ourselves, with Johns lighting the way, teaching what he has learned, sharing his perspective. Uplifting, bordering on sappy at times, but if you let it be, this song is really nice. Parks' tasteful composition fills out the sound perfectly. Interlude is simply gorgeous. Tears form as though by command...

9. Lever
Hardest song on the album, and, oddly, the most like S&M orchestrally. Go figure. Gravel-voiced, hard rockin, a throwback to the angry days, perhaps; shows that Silverchair can still paint blacks, reds, and dark purples...when they want to.

10. My Favorite Thing
Way down from 'Lever', we are treated to a midnight lover's lullabye. Soft woodwinds and strings provide beautiful shading for this delicate, resolute, and passionate carress. Symphony, accoustic guitar, winds, strings, piano, and snare support and intertwine while Johns' precise, exceptional vocals complete the kiss. A beautiful, heartfelt song.

11. After All These Years
Piano and vocal, then orchestra. This is probably the most touching song on the whole album. Gentle, reflective, and reassuring, this gorgeous piece feels like it could have been written hundreds of years ago. In this arrangement, Daniel is both soloist and choir of angels. This is also by far the longest track on the album, but most of it is silence...bonus, a curious piano exploration awaits the patient (or those who fast forward), and takes us out of this 'world within a world.'

I can actually say that this album changed my life. huh.

afterthoughts:
Actually, my silverchair fanhood is a strange affair. my little brother bought frogstomp in 95 (6?), and i listened to it a fair amount then. i remember hearing quite a bit of 'abuse me' on the radio a little later, but i pretty much fell off the boat. i remember looking at freakshow at the record store, wanting it, but eventually not buying it. i have since listened to freakshow(2nd) and neon ballroom(3rd), and they are both good albums, showing the progress and growth of the musicians. "Cemetary" off freakshow and "Emotion Sickness" off ballroom seem to me forshadowing for diorama.

At the time I first heard this album, i thought Johns was the composer of all the orchestral parts, and was so thoroughly impressed that i was convinced he would be remembered for centuries as one of the great composers of our time.... which still may be true, but i was very seriously disappointed when i found out about Van Dyke Parks, who did the orchestration.

i had wanted to believe that Johns was truly the mastermind, but i suppose, in a way, he still was, for finding the right people to come together to bring out most completely his vision, even the parts that were relatively obscure/veiled to him.

To this day, the album has had an incredible effect on me as an artist. Certainly, it is some of the best modern music I've heard in my lifetime.

3 out of 5 stars Actually 3.5.......2007-05-19

I gave it an honest shot but it just doesn't come close to their first 2 albums. It's like Natalie Imbruglia writing now the lyrics or something like it, some pop influence from the outside. Without you is a great song but most of them feel way to "poppy" it's good they have overcome their teen angst, but why change the sound which was so good?
They can evolve, sure... but at best I feel this album is a step sideways... at best.

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair's Masterpiece.......2007-04-20

I like most silver chair fans was around 15 when Frogstomp came out, Loved it and have been a fan ever since. I'm getting arounf late to writing this review, I've had this album since it came out in 02', recently I was going through all my old cd's and came across this one and gave it a spin. I remember really digging this album and playing it a couple 3 times, but when I heard it this time it just hit me different. This album is epic, I really don't know how you could find a better album from todays music (which is mostly garbage). This album is almost Rock Operatic kinda like some of the best Queen stuff. In the U.S. this album bombed and was swept under the rug, but the Aussies kept this album alive. I've reccomended this album to a lot of friends and they look at me like an idiot when I say it's Silverchair,....... after they give it a couple of spins though they are stunned like I was. Again I listen to anything from True 40's 50's Honky tonk /western swing to metal, and I must say this is a top 20 album in my 3000 cd collection. I'm glad I came across this gem again and realized how good this album truly is.

I give this album my Highest Recomendation.

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent album .......2007-03-11

Diorama by Australian band Silverchair is a magnificent album from August 2002 that combines artful lyrics, orchestral arrangements and some delicate playing with some great songs and some strong guitar and drum playing too. I have just listened to my new copy of this album for the first time, and I immediately love it. Having been familiar only with the song The Greatest View before, I can identify several other real standouts, such as the intricate and detailed Tuna In The Brine, the delightful piano-based song After All These Years, and the memorable chorus-based tune Luv Your Life. These are not just any old songs - Silverchair's singer and lyricist Daniel Johns has composed some very fine, unique and melodically-unpredictable music that does not sound like anybody else I have ever heard. Nor does it sound all that much like Silverchair's earler albums either. No matter, this is a beautiful album that will reward many, many repeated hearings.

Note also : Silverchair have just released their latest CD called Young Modern this month; it is the next one after Diorama.

Diorama scores 5 stars for holding my undivided attention for its entire length and for being simply wonderful. Buy it if you enjoy poetic lyric writing mixed with the sound of a rock band.

Highly recommended by me.

      4 out of 5 stars Dio-Drama? - Daniel "i am the ressurection" Johns.......2003-06-03

Listening to Silverchair's latest masterpiece, Diorama, one could be mistaken for thinking that Daniel John's nights are spent at the opera and that he has Freddie Mercury albums on repeat. It takes an assured sense of self to believe you have the musical gift to follow in the hallowed path of Queen or Lou Reed, for Diorama is a musical broth simmering with rock sensibilities while heavily infused with rock opera. Confounding his critics though, Daniel Johns and Silverchair do manage to achieve the impossible. Songs such as "Across the Night", "Tuna in the Brine" and "Luv your Life", take you deep into the dreamy landscapes that inhabit Daniel John's mind. Elaborate yet intense, the songs build up to a crescendo, and then, instead of reaching a conclusion, will surprise you with tangents targeting your emotions. "let us get merry, and make another baby,... i don't want to be lonely" from Across the Night and the "closer to everything" verse from Tuna in the Brine are illustrative of this.If Neon Ballroom confronted John's personal demons, then Diorama decides to escape into a surreal realm.Indeed John's almost seems relieved to be free of the anguish that marked his previous efforts. Instead, through songs like "After all these Years" "World upon your Shoulders" and "With or Without You", John's is displaying the maturity that can only be garnered through dark experience. While personal issues such as loneliness are still glossed over, "i'm all by myself" from "Luv your Life" he will then put a positive spin on it"... but its the way i wanna be". Undoubtedly there most accomplished work, Diorama ranks as one of the finds of 2002.

      5 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant!.......2003-04-17

As an Aussie I will always have a soft spot for Silverchair, but this latest album is such an operatic adventure it is impossible not to be swept away.

This is a band that keeps pushing the envelope of what is possible on a rock album. I remember when Frogstomp was first released thinking that it would be a one off, and this hot new thing would be a flash in the pan. Happily I was very very wrong, and each subsequent album has impressed me more than the last. With Diorama, Daniel's song writing, and the musical talents of he Chris and Ben have all matured brilliantly.

The album is truly an auditory sculpture!

5 out of 5 stars There is no such thing as "going soft", only growing up.......2003-03-22

I am 18 years old, I can also proudly say ive been a fan of Silverchair since the good ol' Frogstomp days. Perhaps one of the greatest things that "still" to this day remains a mind blowing factor is that Daniel, Chris, and Ben were merely High School students when Frogstomp first sold 250,000 records. I don't know about you, but I know friends that have bands and they have trouble making their own records, much less having enough talent to sell them. lol.

Besides that, although Freakshow is my personal favorite, and probably why I became such a hard-core fan, I always figured Neon Ballroom was easily their best, and filled with the most honest and meaningful gut wrentching emotions Johns has ever thrown out there. It took alot risking that kind of dramatic change not only in the music, but the honest emotional clashing trauma that Johns was personally going through.

I like to think of Neon Ballroom as one of the greatest albums ever constructed. Not many people like it, besides other hard core fans like me, but I know ALOT of people, hell, probably every teenager that was going through things they couldn't handle has owned this album atleast once during their lifetime, or atleast should. It is the epitamy of life at its weirdest, and darkest times. But in the end, even after the events that were thought unimaginable to overcome..."steam will rise, esteem will rise."

So, after an emotional rollercoaster like Ballroom, I didn't care what kind of music Diorama would be. I just knew it would be excellent. I mean c'mon, why doubt Johns? Rather if its mad, glad, happy, sad, or just plain misunderstood, Johns knows what he's doing. I had (and still have) faith in the man, so Diorama was merely a waiting experience.

...And let me tell you, my GOD, the wait was worth an eternity. Only "brilliance"can explain Diorama. The backing of symphony orchestra, the beautiful riffs, and the all-out light heartedness of the album puts an overglow to everything that silverchair has done in its past. Rather if its the teenage madness of Frogstomp, the rage of Freakshow, the emotional war of Neon Ballroom, Diorama is the garnish-the finishing touch-the RESULT- of "all the troubled times" these three talented gents have been through. Diorama is silverchair evolving...plain and simple. They started out as angry confused teens, now they have matured to an understanding of the world they though they knew...and it aint so bad afterall.

It cant rain all the time.

Diorama is proof. (Kinda makes you think about the "rainbow" colored album cover, eh?)

5 out of 5 stars Album of the year.......2003-02-07

These songs are have the most beautiful moments of 2002, I love it. I am sorry for the band: they're worth getting huge success, but I don't know why Diorama wasn't released with a great commercial campaign in Europe and the States. Europe plays down Silverchair: this album IS NOT IN TRADE IN HUNGARY (even though I bought the others in Budapest) I had to get it via internet (but finally I ordered it from Germany and it was worth doing that).
All the songs are strong, amazing, dramatic - full of emotions ( I think that's why I love Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, AIC etc. so much). With great step forwards by Diorama the band justified they're unbelievably talented young musicians and they're not just grunge clones. From Frogstomp until Diorama is a beautiful timeline to let us make sure they're magnificient. It is so ironic that debut was the great success and being greater and better got them out of mainstream. I can't really imagine I'll be so lucky I get into a concert of them ever, but I hope they come to Vienna at least (it is close to Budapest)to get a chance. I wish Daniel recover completely very soon and join the others in order to conquer the world by a frenetic tour.
      YOU MUST BUY IT!!! ...

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Yet.......2002-09-03

This is the finest work this band has produced. It truly is the greatest of all their albums. The song "without you" is the the greatest of all their work.

              5 out of 5 stars Simply Great.......2003-06-15

I found this amazing value for money, not only are the singles great, the b-sides are fabulous and the actual box is just what you'd expect from the diorama ranger

              well done silverchair!

4 out of 5 stars Singles of Diorama.......2003-04-07

If you liked the album Diorama and take interest in Silverchair as a band, you`ll like this. The great songs from the album, and the bands comment on the work with the album and additional previously unreleased tracks (like the great "pins in my needles") makes this full value for money.

Additional to this singles box I recommend the DVD Emotion Pictures- if you`re a fan that is.
