5 out of 5 stars Mercury Blues: a seldom heard zauberwerk by Shiva Burlesque .......2006-01-04

"With elegant touches of refined melody, traditional arrangements and lyrical depth...(t)here's a place for 'Mercury Blues' right next to the '80s peak moments in lush, sensuous atmospheric rock...Often truly lyrical, painful and self-exploratory, these are the closest you'll get to poetic words integrated into the rock medium." -Andrew Perry, Select Magazine, Feb 1991

Mercury Blues is the second and final album by Shiva Burlesque, a band working in the underground music scene of Los Angeles in the late 1980's/early 90's.

It's a smart, emotional and eclectic roller coaster of an album, somewhat comparable to artists like Echo & the Bunnymen, John Cale, Nick Cave, The Doors, etc. The album (and band) also would probably appeal to fans of post-modern rock like Radiohead, The Arcade Fire, etc; as well as the group that emerged from Shiva Burlesque, Grant Lee Buffalo.

The 2002 re-release is beautifully digi-packaged and remastered from the original tapes; and includes a lyric sheet/poster, liner notes, and a never before heard bonus track.

The kalaidescopic songs range from to the haunted, White Album-ish title track (Mercury Blues) to explosive pre-Nirvana guitar rock (Do the Pony), to wry, almost Brechtian satire (Chester the Chimp).

At once lush and raw, Mercury Blues is an under-heard high point of it's era.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songwriting & Explosive Playing = Must Have CD.......2005-04-28

Adding new bassist and future Grant Lee Buffalo member/producer Paul Kimble and cellist Greg Adamson to the group brought a new, somewhat more "organic" and sometimes hard driving sound to the mix. This one is somewhat closer in mood and tone to the first two Grant Lee Buffalo releases and includes the song "Cherry Orchard" with Grant Lee Phillips singing which features just the three future members of that group, also Grant sings a "duet" on the song "Chester the Chimp."

This was recorded in a much better room than the first record, the drums especially, sound great with much more varied and professional production. The remastering is excellent which blows away the sound of my original CD. The songs are more wide ranging than on their debut record with the highlights being "Sick Friend", "Do the Pony", "Peace" "Sparrow's Song" and the spy/punk music flavored "Meet Jack Ruby" (you could get shot, shot!) being some of the best, although I don't think there is a weak song on this very good record. There is a hidden track that is a short, funny Beach Boys send up that is quite a gas.

4 out of 5 stars Unkown, Classic 80's Album.......2005-04-12

As one reviewer wrote about Shiva Burlesque "A powerful and graceful band that was too post-punk to be folk-rock and too folk-rock to be post-punk" I think gives you an idea of what the band was like and also brings up a problem of identity as well, but only if you like easily classified music. This album was picked by Melody Maker and Rolling Stone as one of their year end best of releases for 1988. Unfortunately critical raves don't sell records or pay the bills.
Grant Lee Phillips(guitar) and Jeffrey Clarke(vocals) were the main songwriters and no the band doesn't sound much like Grant Lee Buffalo which grew out of the wreckage of this group. Clarke has that sort of Jim Morrison/Nick Cave edge about his vocals with a dash of David Sylvian thrown in also if that makes any sense. An emotional, dramatic and sometimes extreme rollercoaster with literate and dare I say it "poetic" lyrics this record is a highlight of the 80's and most people don't even know about it. If you are a fan of the following groups or musicians I highly recommend you buy this cd.

Grant Lee Buffalo
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Neil Young
The Doors
Love
David Sylvian
Lou Reed
Leonard Cohen
Psychedelic Furs
Radiohead
Love and Rockets
R.E.M.
Mercury Rev
Echo & The Bunnymen

While it may seem a weird mix of groups it is appropriate for this band.

I picked this album up because of one person --Grant Lee Phillips of Grant Lee Buffalo (and now solo) fame. I had reservations since Grant didn't act as lead vocalist. My other concerns came from the release date. I've never been a fan of much of anything from the 80's. However, I must say WITHOUT A DOUBT that I am continually impressed with this album. Although it has a much more poppy feel than what you would expect from other Phillips' projects, you won't find great songwriting or musicianship lacking. This is one of the few CDs in my collection that I keep coming back to listen to BEGINNING TO END! It's a shame more people haven't heard of Grant at all and even more a shame that HARDLY ANYONE has heard of Shiva Burlesque. This album may be THE saving grace of the 80's. Do your ears a favor, buy this album!

I don't know how you've arrived at this page, but most definitely fulfill this serendipitous opportunity to acquire glorious orchestral pop. I've owned this going on 9 years and it still receives loving attention.
