Jim Greer's second record, Rover Songs, is a collection of 12 unconventional pop tunes, each one as eclectic and original as the multi-instrumentalist himself. His songs never take the easy way, constantly detouring with simple turns of phrase or odd arrangements and instrumentation. Like Beck or XTC's Andy Partridge, Greer forsakes the standard pop-song formula, compelling the listener to hang on his every move to see where he may take us next. In "Tarot on the Mississippi," Greer's sparse acoustic guitar is interrupted by a slightly demented accordion accompanied by what sounds like a toy organ and the static musings of a radio talk-show host. Likewise, all reasonable expectations are dashed with "On the Bench" as a fragmented guitar lead lurches into the song and finally pushes it into a new realm altogether. Greer, primarily a guitarist, singer, and keyboardist, is accompanied on Rover Songs by a number of San Francisco Bay Area musicians--bassist Jim Bowser from Crumb, John Vanderslice from MK Ultra, Shana Kingsley from the Gun and Doll Show, and guitarist Jim Campilongo--who assist Greer in exploring a wide range of musical ideas, from the lazy, front-porch feel of "Sleep Attack" to the quirky, upbeat pop of "Southern States." Greer's influences are random and many (Neil Young, Sebadoh, Fuck, Radar Bros.), but none of them seem to stick for long as Greer leaps from influence to influence, sometimes within the space of a brief measure, allowing him to create something truly unique. --Paul Ducey

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Album Description

The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is the only musical unit of its kind in the United States military. Because it is charged to represent the musical history of the Army, the Corps extensively researches all of its music, and much of what it performs is arranged from original sources dating as far back as the 17th century. The Corps uses arranging techniques and styles of the 18th century to promote the maost authentic performance possible. The uniforms worn by the Corps are designed from regulations of the Continental Army and represent what fifers, drummers and buglers would have worn during the 18th century. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is a special ceremonial unit in The Old Guard, the ceremonial escort to the President. In addition to ceremonies, the Corps performs traditional fife and drum music throughout the National Capital Region, including performances for visiting heads of state at the White House.

The Spirit of America is a great CD. It is made by the Old Guard's Fife and Drum Corps which is considered one of the best in the country. The CD has music with the Bugle, fife, snare drum, and base drum. I highly recommend this CD.

this album is really cool. Jim does the many styles thing well, you don't even really notice. and you can tell he knows what he's best at --check Sleep Attack, Two Foxes, Rover Song. pretty refreshing i must say. JG seems like a guy who is not in a hurry, not putting all his eggs in one basket-or record, I mean. I mean I think that his next record or the one after that will approach greatness. Here it feels like he's experimenting, having fun, trying things out. production is sweet as well, super clear and fat.

A Diamond In The Rough.......1999-08-08

Jim Greer's Rover Songs is a testament to what independent record making can and should be. Heart felt originality and the album's refusal to stay put in predictable stylistic ruts make this CD one to be played again and again. The well crafted songs and great sounds give Rover Songs an appeal close to that of any big name, major label artist on the scene today. Styles heard on the album range from pop melody to brooding Pink Floyd darkness to country-rock to piano ballad. Jim pulls them off with ease and still avoids the trap of being immitative. If Greer continues to produce work as good as this he'll surely become on of those major artists. As soon as the mass listening public gets a load of Greer and his music there's no telling how far his music will take him.

Jim Greer is a modern singer-songwriter par excellence, and this record gives an excellent look at the breadth and maturity of his musical talent.

The songs range from upbeat and melodic, to quieter, darker and more introspective, and to exuberant and noisy. The common thread behind all these diverse musical layers is Jim's honesty, coming through in his plaintive vocals and heartfelt lyrics. (I'm not kidding!)

This is one of those records that sounds better every time I hear it; with each further listening comes more appreciation of the musicianship, the honesty, and the beauty of the songs.

If you like finely crafted alternative rock/pop with feeling, BUY THIS RECORD!!!!
