If last year’s breakthrough album 'We Move Through Weather' was Tarentel’s high water mark, then these two companion EPs could be interpreted as the rise and fall of that flood. The same recording sessions are responsible for all three releases: 'Paper White' represents the beginning, 'We Move Through Weather' is the inspired centerpiece, and the 43-minute 'Big Black Square' signals the smoky ending.

Played in succession, the three releases chart Tarentel’s journey from dynamic, guitar-driven instrumentalists to perpetually curious treasure hunters of the mysterious sounds that most of us take for granted. As a fairly brief four-track EP, Tarentel's Paper White is a concise and explosive expression of the band's ever-evolving sound, and one of their finest releases to date. The addition of various horns and woodwinds (thanks the addition of Steve Dye to the fold and his arsenal of homemade instruments) to their standard lineup of guitars, bass and drums adds an intense allure and complexity to their already burgeoning, thunderous yet melodic compositions (call it instrumental rock, post-rock, whatever), which are both hypnotic and challenging all at once. Bewitching, and highly recommended.

With Paper White and Big Black Square, Tarentel walk a fine line between what's considered an EP as opposed to a full-length album. The release of Big Black Square is a 40-minute-plus improvisation that makes the listening experience tedious. Tarentel have a vague idea of where they want to go, they just don't have a compass, and nothing proves this more than the aforementioned track. Ambient noises and feedback play out for 15 minutes before the drumbeat comes in, going for another 15 minutes over feedback before finally fading away into more ambient noises. Paper White is somewhat of the same approach, yet the songs are much shorter, with softening touches of acoustic guitar and piano leaving one pleasantly confused.

that's how I see this. These two Ep's have the same feel, although SQUARE is vastly different from WHITE. I guess they came from the same sessions: and it's not like "From Bone to Satellite"(which I think is their best), but has a nice spacious feel which, in combination with the truly improvisatory nature of these two, makes their music at this period

downright interesting.

These 24 measures, studied by Welsh harpers, seem to be closely related to the Gaelic harp tradition of medieval Ireland and Scotland. Indeed some of the measures are today found in the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe or Piobaireachd (pibroch) and some of the melodies played by Bill Taylor do indeed resemble Piobaireachd. It has long been felt that this ancient form of pipe music may have emanated from harp music. It is indeed fortunate that the Scottish Highland Bagpipe has preserved these elements of ancient Gaelic music for us. Consequently, the music on the Two Worlds of The Welsh Harp is anything but weird, foreign or long forgotten as mentioned by earlier reviewers!
A word about the ms. itself, it is actually a music book and into it, Robert ap Haw copied his teacher's tunes or settings of tunes. He certainly was not the composer as indicated in "product details", page 2 of 6. His tunes are perhaps centuries older than his instructor.

Stunningly unique!.......2002-08-20

Being a student of harp for many years I was amazed to find a repertoire different from anything I had encountered before. It introduces listeners to a musical aesthetic long forgotten. Mr. Taylor has done a masterful job in presenting works from the Robert ap Huw MS. a work which has long challenged musicians and academicians alike. If you are interested in the harp this is a must-have. Masterful!

An incredible demonstration of the Welsh harp by Bill Taylor.......2001-02-20

I purchased this CD while researching the Welsh harp in history for a book I'm writing. Mr. Taylor's ability to play the harp in its original form and to play music from the time period brings this lost instrument to life and gives listeners a taste of what the music would have sounded like in medieval/renaissance Wales.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for harp music with a historical touch.

weird but worth it.......2000-11-10

I'll tell you the truth...I bought this CD because I like Carol Thompson's stuff on Dorian. It is NOTHING like Mrs. Thompson's stuff. Mr. Taylor has made a very unique recording. This disc sounds weird-but in a very good way. It sounds foriegn at first and then grows on you. I recommend this stunningly singular recording. Get it and be blown away.
