The nuevo flamenco trend in America has influenced many artists to jump on the Latin guitar bandwagon, especially within a smooth jazz format. With his latest album, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Govi strives for a pop-friendly Latin guitar brew that stirs in subtle musical flavors, but the end results are not as dynamic as one might expect. In fact, two of the songs sound like Strunz & Farah lite, as Govi attempts a similarly modern sound but without the impressive technical virtuosity. To his credit, Govi does try different approaches, whether integrating sitar into the low-key "Spicy Dream," playing subdued electric guitar on the sentimental "This Precious Moment," or exploring an upbeat soukous vibe on "Afrodisiac." He has some ideas here, but it's surprising how he can take a potentially intriguing combination--specifically the acoustic guitar strums, bluesy electric axework, dancing panpipes, and bouncing bass found on "Carousel"--and make it sound so safe. --Bryan Reesman

More Classic Govi .......2006-05-28

The songs on this CD are stylisticly similar to Govi's previous release "Seventh Heaven". Two cuts are upbeat melodies and the rest are soft to medium. All are superbly played, in an understated complex style and (again) impeccably recorded. The low end bass notes reach the bottom depths of a good sound system without any hint of bloating or distortion and the clean, detailed, and balanced background percussion adds a beautiful sense of depth. On this CD Govi demonstrates a unique ability to tweek his music to stay fresh, while maintaining his classic sound. If this CD had one more high energy pulsating cut, I'd give it 5 stars. You won't be disappointed.......2004-02-24

Govi's musical offerings are consistently reliable. A friend of mine introduced me to Govi with Guitar Odyssey, (a Masterpiece in itself!) and I've been hooked ever since. Though not true flamenco or even Spanish guitar, his range is even more world oriented and interesting without being too "themey". New Age isn't quite right as genres go; as I'm sure you know some new age music is just weird. This disc is excellent! It transcends theme and weaves an audio tapestry that conjures exotic imaginings. You will not be disappointed. My only complaint (?) is that the discs are short. I can appreciate the creative process; and i guess I would rather have a stripped down c.d. than lots of filler, but I'm sure he has the talent to produce a more substantial recording.

This release is superb! If you are a fan of beautifully executed and masterful guitar playing from the heart, get your hands on this disc. Govi and Strunz & Farah are my two favorite 'nouveau flamenco' artists by far. They exhude passion and warmth to their playing that not many others can achieve.

Best steel string guitar playing ever.......2003-04-09

For the steel string guitar afficionados, this album is heaven. It doesn't get any better than this. The melodic invention of the arabesques they weave throughout this album is unprecedented.

Ever since I've heard L.Subramaniam play on this CD, I've been searching for his other recordings, but nothing he did since this session comes even close to the intensity displayed here.

Why was the guitar invented? Part IX.......2000-09-02

Although long since Yuppified, co-opted, and infected by the all-pervasive, nauseating, 'Gipsy Kings Virus' permeating most guitar music classified as "World," Strunz and Farah were, once upon a time, a magnificent group.

Their uncompromosing early records--"Mosaico," "Frontera," and "Guitarras"--were one-of-a-kind fusions of middle-eastern and latin acoustic guitar styles mixed with scorching doses of electrifying improvisation. These three records will always remain near the top of my list of Acoustic Fusion Classics (right up there with Shakti and Paco De Lucia Sextet).

Of special note on "Mosaico," of course, is the guest appearance of East-Indian Violin wizard L.Subramaniam. The two tunes on which he displays his awesome virtuosity (and inspires Strunz and Farah to similar heights of their own) sound like the greatest Mahavishnu Orchestra tracks Mahavishnu never recorded. Just electrifying stuff. The rest of the record is a wonderfully varied, highly melodic, deeply rooted TOUR DE FORCE of Latin style acoustic guitar which refuses to pander to the superficial tastes of the very would-be cretins who would later come to make them popular 'World Music' favorites.

Bought it a few months ago, haven't listened since........2000-05-29

I like to rate albums after the fact, in most cases. I remember being impressed by the artists' virtuosity on the guitar. That's all I remember. The recording style and instrumentation has a '70's feel to it. Some might not care, I do. After all, the album is from 1982. The result is that you'll listen all the way through the first time. Then, when the novelty wears off, you'll file it in your spare CD case and forget about it. If you're just checking out this style of music, this album might not be the one for you.

Just one word "Confluence".......2000-05-14

This is one of the top ten most intense tunes ever conceived and played through human sweat. It is literlly impossible not to be blown away by it. It is #2 on my list right behind Weather Report's doctorate thesis on Funk "125th street Congress." "Confluence" seduces unwary listeners with an infectious groove, then grabs them in midair and drops them in the passenger seat of a Ferrari driven at top speed through a hairpin turn; that's the effect it has. Of course the drivers are Mr. Strunz, Mr. Farah, and oh yes, in case I forget, the king of testosterone violin himself: Dr. L.Subramaniam. Not that testosterone is all he's about but his solo here is such an adrenaline rush, it will give you whiplash. The rest of the record is great too, with a good thick recording all around, nowhere near New Age country. Hard to believe this record is 20 years old! Time really does fly.

1st and still one of the best.......2000-03-02

Strunz&Farah's 1st recording from 1980 sounds better now than ever before. Although different in many ways (rhythms, still string guitars, compositions style) to their more popular rumba albums of the '90, Mosaico is an outstanding album of true world fusion. Guest artist L.Subramaniam plays one of the most haunting violin solos ever on "Shadow of Heaven" and S&F define new limits for pick style acoustic guitar players with their outstanding

From Earth to Mars is Arturo Rodriguez's first recording. The title work was commissioned by The Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration of Fort Worth and first premiered in Fort Worth, Texas by The TCU Symphony in December 2000. Mosaico Mexicano is the composer's first orchestral work. It was written in 1998 and first premiered in Dallas, Texas in May 2000 by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Imagine your hopes and dreams translated into music. Imagine the glorious and thrilling sounds of a John Williams or Bernard Herrmann film score. Imagine music taking you across space and time...to Mars. This is what Arturo Rodriguez does with imagination, verve and style. Treasures abound in this music for large orchestra, women's chorus, and tenor. Most young composers wouldn't dream of writing for such mammoth forces and ever hearing their work performed once, let alone commissioned and recorded. This is proof both of Rodriguez's stature and promise as the most exciting rising star in today's musical firmament.

Orfeon Rip-Off.......2005-02-23

This CD is a rip-off. The music is excellent; but six of the twelve tracks are wrongly titled and timed and, far from containing twelve pieces, there are actually only ten. 'Mosaico Cubano' (5'57"), supposedly track 1, actually starts on track 12 (minus its opening notes) and ends on track 8. 'Fantasia Cubana' (5'13"), supposedly track 9, begins there but ends on track 1. 'Hoy Son Día de Reyes' (7'13"), supposedly track 8, is actually track 7. All the music, correctly joined up and with various short passages snipped out here, can be found correctly timed and identified on the BMG/RCA CD 'In a Cuban Garden'.
