The Groovies' 2 Buddah LP's(this one with "Flamingo",its predecessor)were America's best kept secret for almost a decade & it took a new version of the band(minus their incredible original singer)to bring these 2 gems back on the map...

Teenage Head epitomizes R& R's Genius & the original band is almost as good as the Stones or the MC 5,their major influences at the time.
There are ballads,country,boogie as well,everything is perfectly played with a sense of humor that illuminates the tracks & everyone with an interest in rock & roll should be in possession of this album.
God bless Roy Loney & Cyril Jordan for giving us those moments of pure joy!

A Real Nice Rootsy Mix.......2004-10-12

.....And if you know what that means...you will definitely dig this album. Wow...what can I say about this album,well I don't think it is unbalanced as some reviewers have said. Actually, I think it is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I wouldn't label this as proto-punk(as it often is),to me it represents a love of rock music and the music that gave birth to rock. The proto-punkers represent that too, but this band goes into different territory...like country, blues,rockabilly,and good old boogie woogie type stuff.So,in this regard I think it would appeal to someone who is more "roots rock" minded.

This is one of those albums that came out in the 1970's, was completely buried by the corporate takeovers of record companies and radio stations, and remained virtually unknown among the general public. But it was listened to by almost anyone and everyone who was an aspiring rock musician -- along with obscure albums by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, IGGY & THE STOOGES, THE SWEET, and several others.

Teenage Head always seemed to be missing somehting in its initial package. The songs seemed a bit too cutious and the band sounded like they were trying to please producers or record company execs. Should we go for a pop sound? A punk sound? A Power pop, or flat out rock sound? It seems that the band can't decide what they want to sound like, and the results fall short of what should-have, could-have, or might-have been possible.

Whiskey Woman is still too short -- that bass line and main riff should be stretched to 8 minutes or so. Doctor Boogie is still understated (needs to rock harder). High Flying Baby needed some caffine or other stimulant I think. It's not strong enough for a good opening song.

The best music is usually found on albums where a band (or single recording artist) just does what works best for themselves.

The added tracks here make the remasterd/extended CD a must buy, even if you already have the LP or earlier CD.

THe original 9 songs are still proto-punk thrashers that now sound better than ever. But the CD kicks from high-gear to overdrive from 'Shakin All Over' through 'Carol'.

Musically, it's somewhere betwween THE FACES "Snakes and Ladders", THE DAMNED's debut album. WIth the extra tracks, it sounds a lot like the better material by THE KINKS, or out-takes and alternate-takes of songs by THE WHO, before "Whos Next".

Well worth the purchase price.

Great record, unfortunately BMG hasn't paid a dime in mechanicals/royalties to Jordan or Loney since releasing this in 1999. Yet another screw-over by a ripoff record company.

The Groovies' best album.......2006-01-04

I know Roy Loney fans will disagree with me (pointing to "Teenage Head" as the Groovies' finest album), but I considor this to be the band's best album. The Groovies were, at the time, a complete anachronism. Few bands were as unabashedly old fashioned in sound as them. While other bands were making "rock" albums with overloads of synthesizers and production, the Groovies were making albums that sound like they could've come out during the British Invasion. However, this wasn't a bad thing, far from it. The group showed how great classic rock 'n' roll was, rejecting the pretenses that plauged the lame arena rock bands that were popular at the time. Their albums after this were good but inconsistent. Those albums had moments of brilliance, but also had a good amount of filler and uninspired covers. This album, however, is great from start to finish. Not to mention the fact that the title track is, as many people have noted, one of power pop's finest moments. As I stated above, this album was a complete anachronism when it was released. However, they were one of the first bands to do this, paving the way for many subsequent power pop bands and becoming one of America's greatest cult bands. An overlooked masterpeice, this is the best starting place (along with "Groovies Greatest Grooves") to get acquainted with one of America's greatest bands.

An Anachronism: Ahead of (and Behind) its Time.......2005-04-13

I find the seeming obscurity of this album difficult to understand based upon the strength of the title track alone, which is - to put it mildly - brilliant. Shake Some Action (the song) is a pulse-pounding power-pop / proto-punk anthem in the grandest sense; the rest of the album, however, is a bit of a curious anachronism. The Groovies find themselves shying away from the grittier, more raw (often almost sleazy) Stones-esque sound they created on Teenage Head in favor of a more melodic 'Beatles circa 1966' sound - but in 1976! Put side by side with original British Invasion era hits, these songs stand up for themselves, unfortunately they were released ten years too late (and, as such, found primarily only a cult following). One could argue, however, that these songs too were ahead of their time (for everything, particularly musicals fads, work in cycles). Was it not the music of the British Invasion 9as well as American Garage) that was the primary influence on the then burgeoning (in 1976 that is) punk movement? And it would be only a few more years hence that power-pop would make its greatest maks on the music charts with the likes of The Romantics, The Knack, and others doing what The Flamin' Groovies had already done to perfection.

This album gets off to a great start with the amazing title track -- you'd think that a solid proto-punk album influenced by British invasion bands was on the way. Well, the sound was certainly influenced by the bands of the British invasion, but not for the better. The Groovies go on to mimic the Beatles on just about every song, finally covering the "Misery" near the end of the album. It's not unlistenable by any means, but it's not original, either. Everyone should be familiar with the first song, but the ones that follow are less memorable.

The World Stands Still.......2001-11-22

I have heard the song "Shake Some Action" some 5,000 times since 1977, and from the opening notes, and from the moment those first, dark, pulsing notes ring out, the same thing happens: The world stands still, reality drops away, and I am enveloped in a total shivering, dark, throbbing universe of thrill, memory and obsession. Not only is this song one of the greatest pop recordings ever, it is one of the most striking works of art ever created. Absolute perfection. Nothing else on the album is quite as good as the song "Shake Some Action" (whose first five seconds alone are towering, monumental), but very little in all of human creative endeavor quite matches it.

A Timeless Classic.......2001-01-17

When San Francisco's Flamin Groovies went to London to reinvent themselves as neo-mods in the early 70s they teamed up with Dave Edmunds to create one of my all-time and forever top-ten favorite albums. Driving rhythm and classic tunes abound here but the at core of the disc (for me) are the exquisite three-guitar arrangements. Subtle and dense at the same time. Listen to the guitars on "Don't You Lie to Me" or "Shake Some Action." Brilliant. Kudos to both Groovie Cyril Jordan and producer Edmunds. The San Francisco Groovies were cool; greasy and rockin, and the later London Groovie albums have their moments but this one is a masterpiece. Put five plus marks behind my five stars!

Groovies At Full Speed.......2006-08-18

46 Flamin' Groovies cuts on one handy 2-disc set? Groovies fans gotta love it. Not quite sure why you'd want the 3-disc "Bust Out at Full Speed" since it actually has fewer cuts and costs more... maybe the liner notes are more extensive? More photos of the guys in their mid '70s pilot shades? I dunno... At any rate, this one's the bomb (as the kids say), though the sheer number of cuts could be too much for the power pop neophyte. Then again, this is a good place to start shakin' some Groovies if all you're familiar with is "Shake Some Action".

Always out of place, the Flamin Groovies were almost always great. When San Francisco was drowning in late-'60s hippie excess, the Groovies responded with tight, riff-heavy pop songs such as "Teenage Head" and "High-Flyin' Baby." Predictably enough, not too many people noticed. So what do the Groovies do? They move to England, transform themselves into a hard-rocking, jangly merseybeat outfit, and release the critically acclaimed Shake Some Action. The year was 1976, a period better known for punk than for retro-pop. Oh well and too bad for the Groovies, but not so bad for us, as this collection demonstrates. With should-have-been hits like "You Tore Me Down" and "Slow Death," Groovies' Greatest Grooves is the perfect introduction to San Francisco's most accomplished misfits. --Percy Keegan

Timeless 60s sound .......2006-08-12

This `best of' compilation really showcases the Groovies talents, an excellent place to start for anyone hungering for more of the sound of Buffalo Springfield/Chuck Berry/Byrds/Stones/British Invasion. From the hard-edged Teenage Head to the psychedelic rocker Shake Some Action what really stands out is the Groovies completely unpretentious approach to creating some great music that doesn't underestimate its audience but still rocks out. The Groovies hold up very well into the new millennium. If you like this, the next album to pick up is Teenage Head.

Well-selected sampler of the Cyril Jordan years of the Groovies.......2006-06-28

During Cyril Jordan's years as The Groovies' leader, they produced one great album ("Shake Some Action") and several very uneven ones. While the albums released after "Shake Some Action" all had their moments, they were often dragged down by hastilly-written filler material and odd cover choices. This compilation and "Shake Some Action" are the only essential purchases of that era. Most of the great songs from each album are included, showing how at their best, The Groovies were one of the most exicting rock bands of the decade. If you're only a casual fan who has heard a song or two off a sampler of 70's power-pop, this is really all you need. Some will complain about the absense of material from the Roy Loney years with the exception of one song. While the band was great in that period and I feel a good compilation of those years needs to be produced urgently, the decision to leave if off this compilation may be wise. The band changed imensley when the leader changed, so its almost as if The Groovies were two different bands. The early band favored raw roots rock with a sense of humor. The latter band were very much power-pop revisionists of the British Invasion and played without any trace of irony. Having equal amounts of both periods on the same sampler may have led to a disjointed feeling. If they were to make one, it would be critical to put it in chronological order to show the evolution. Also the inclusion of the classic "Slow Death" with short-time vocalist Chris Wilson is a wise decision, as this is a classic song that wasn't included on any of the studio albums. If you don't want to purchase the albums, this compilation would be a good choice. At their best, The Groovies were one of the best rock 'n' roll bands in the world.

Teenage Head.......2005-08-30

A fabulous collection of original rock classics. Songs like Teenage Head are some of the greatest songs ever. It is no surprise Dave Edmunds produced many of the songs like "yeah my baby" and "Between the Lines" you hear this sound today in bands like Mondo Daio, Hives, Jet and others. It is a good fun album.

Props & dues.......2004-04-06

One of the few releases of the Flamin' Groovies where the artists are actually getting paid by the record company. Most of the rest on the market are bootlegs and artist ripoffs. Another exception is Norton's "Slow Death" released in 2002.

A must have!.......2001-07-19

I can't remember why I ended up buying this album but it is certainly one of my favorites. The entire collection is excellent but stand outs "Slow Death" and "Tallahassee Lassie" get some heavy rotation (and additional volume) at home. Another reviewer suggested the group "Radio Birdman" for people who like the Groovies and in a strange coincidence, I'm listening to their "Essential '74-78" CD as I write this review. Check both of these bands out!

...not really but they do share the same proto-punk sound...sticking to the basics of rock n roll, these guys are so amazing on songs like 'love have mercy', 'pistol packing', and 'bam balam'...its just upbeat and fun...makes me wanna' get up and dance and not care...which is what we should be doing anyway right?

Flamin Groovies First Album Is Their Best.......1999-11-29

Wow, I can't believe no one has reviewed this. Could be that this first album, originally released in 1969, has been forgotten in favor of the band's later recordings like "Shake Some Action," which, being produced by Dave Edmunds, fit more neatly into the typical rock hack's categories--power-pop or whatever you want to call it. Still and all, I guess I like "Supersnazz" best of all the Flamin Groovies albums. The album both looks backward, to the Beatles and '50s rock and roll, and foreward to the revisionist bands of the '70s, like Big Star and the Raspberries. Whereas the Raspberries were crass and from Cleveland, and Big Star muted and from Memphis, the Groovies had a bit of San Francisco gaslight in their sound--a kind of rueful, civilized approach, an end-of-the-era sound. They never sounded so un-mannered again. Classics: "The First One's Free," "Laurie Did It," and "Brushfire." You want to hear where Wilco and all the rest come from, you could do worse than "Supersnazz." And remember, back in 1969, a lot of folks said that rock was dead, which may have been true, because an album like this, coming in the same year as the Stones' "Let It Bleed," seemed pretty insubstantial Now it sounds like a charming minor classic.

A Must Listen For Groovies Fanatics.......2000-10-30

I can't believe I'm the first here to review this. I've owned it since it was released back in '95. A great compilation of rarities,live stuff , rehearsal recordings, and demos from the more rootsy rockin' original incarnation(prior to the Cyril Jordan led Brit Invasion retro/proto - power pop era) of the band with vocalist Roy Loney. I was so knocked out by this when I first got it that I must have kept it in my CD changer for a month. A good deal of this material is previously unnissued.The booklet is great also, very informative liner notes by Miriam Linna as well as many never before seen photos. This wasn't released yesterday ! Only criticism of the release itself is a few tracks are a little rough in the sound quality department, but hey these are rarities, so who knows where the tapes have been, especially outtakes like a cover of "I Can't Explain", a neat live version of "Buddy Can You Spare A Dime" and a smokin' "Heartbreak Hotel".The Supersnazz radio promo is just icing on the cake. Priceless.

As the "missing link," it's essential.......2006-11-21

SLOW DEATH serves as the missing link between the Groovies blues-influenced Kama Sutra years and the British Invasion Sire years. The Groovies were inbetween labels, Roy Loney had just left the band (replaced by Chris Wilson), Danny Mihm was about to take a brief vacation from the music biz, and Cyril Jordan began setting the Groovies in a new direction musically.

This really may be the best the Groovies ever sounded: very tight Stones-on-amphetamines rock and roll. Jordan and James Ferrell simply rock out on guitar and Mihm and George Alexander show why they're the best rhythm combination the Groovies ever had.

The first four tracks ("Sweet Little Rock & Roller," "Slow Death," "Let It Rock" and "Dog Meat") don't stop for any limiting adjectives. Adding the demo version of "Shake Some Action" is icing on the cake.

Yeah, the sound quality ain't the best, but be thankful these rehearsal tapes even exist. This was a powerful band which never quite reached this level of excitement again.

the Norton issue of these recordings (which may be found in bad-sounding bootleg form elsewhere) is a must-have for anybody who likes raw rock n' roll. I love the Flamin Groovies anyway, but this is my single favorite Flamin Groovies package. I want everyone to hear it.

Killer, primal rock and roll from the Groovies' 1971-73 period. Made up mostly of demos made after Cyril Jordan remade the band into one of the fiercest and tightest outfits never to break big in the U.S. Mostly recorded live in the studio, the tracks are lo-fi and raw for the most part, but don't lose a thing for it. This is super-tight, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll and should be heard by anyone who knows the real thing.

If one wants to buy a CD where the audience is almost louder than the band, well this is the CD for you. It's definatly a bootleg source and not even a good soundboard mix. It sounds like some person with a recorder sitting by the PA and its weak and sadly a dis-service to a great band :( It says its from Chris Wilson's sources :( Chris doesn't care much about the quality of tapes/CD's he puts out then. Go for Slow Death a better sounding live CD. Pity the material is more diverse on this CD though . Go ahead and get this CD if you pay no more than $5.00 for it, otherwise you'll be sorry.

Not exactly sure if this CD comes from a bootleg tape source or not,although there are a few rough spots here and there.It really doesn't deter from the full experience of this live effort.This would be something like the third ever Flamin' Groovies recording I've ever had.Really like this proto-punk San Francisco five piece.Total of twenty-one cuts with a duration of 72:11.About every tune rocks,like "Fall On You","From Me To You","Yeah My Baby" and their well done covers David Crosby's "Lady Friend",the Beatle's "Please Please Me",two Chuck Berry tracks "Around And Around" and "Let It Rock" and the Rolling Stone's obscurity "Miss Amanda Jones".Line-up:Cyril Jordan-guitar&vocals,Chris Wilson-guitar&vocals,George Alexander-bass,James Ferrell-guitar and David Wright-drums.Sould appeal to fans of Plimsouls,Cheap Trick,The Dictators,Chocolate Watchband and The Ramones.Very good choice.
