Customer Reviews:
Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29
With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.
beautiful.......2001-01-22
Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.
Excellent!.......2001-01-04
Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.
It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22
I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.
Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20
I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

Adam Green is no longer cool.......2007-01-03
I don't know what the beef over this album is. It is the full progression of the same catchy-weird song writing style he's been doing since Friends of Mine. This is deep-fried cheese and it isn't endearing. Take a good whiff. This music rebels from every musical convention in existence today, including the ones that Green himself invented. If you want to hear a completely independent artist, inquire here.
If not, go listen to anyone else. But if you want swinging tunes from another dimension that seems to think of The Rat Pack as The Beatles and that Glen Campbell is Buddy Holly, spin this puppy. Scratch that. Maybe it's like if Lou Reed were to write for Sinatra. I don't know how to describe what goes on on this disc, just that I like the music that dances around the utterly sick and rotten core of these tunes. Whatever it is, it puts a big dumb smile on my big dumb face.
a poet.......2006-11-28
Adam Green has been very prolific in the past three years. He was one half of the Moldy Peaches. The band broke up in 2002, but played a surprise show in Fall 2004. But the band is a thing of the past, and he is three albums into a pretty good solo career. That doesn't stop audiences from requesting "Who's Got The Crack" all the time. I witnessed the new sound last year. Green has sort of mined that period of Nick Cave, post-Birthday Party. At first Cave used to do ironic covers of songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley. After a few albums of murder ballads, Cave got serious. Adam Green is more like Ray Stevens doing cover songs of Nick Cave and Lee Hazelwood. Green and company are talented folk. "Animal Dreams" has a string section. "Nat King Cole" has a Lou Reed vibe. There are some funny moments as in "Hey Dude" and "Drugs." There are some great moments like "Watching Old Movies" which has a classic feel. Green is almost like Spinal Tap on "White Women." This is real musical stuff. Adam Green has delivered the goods. He is serious about this music. He has created a body of work that is quite impressive. Adam Green has a soul of a poet, but can't resist making an ironic face.
Such a long wait... and for this?.......2006-11-08
I don't know why but for some reason the release date on this album kept getting pushed back further and further. Yet it was released in Germany months ago. It just so happened my dad was heading to Germany on business so I had him pick me up a copy while he was there. I guess I had a copy before most people since it took forever to come out here in America but this album was a huge step down from his previous works. Key track: "Party Line." But really, his album "Friends Of Mine" is where it's at.
Stop please.......2006-10-22
How does this joker have a record deal? I know, Garfied and Friends of Mine wich this is so far from it makes me want to cry
Not his best work........2006-09-19
If you really want to enjoy adam green's style and band, you should purchase another cd like GEMSTONES. This cd, is totally different than anything else adam green has ever done. These songs are slow, and not as fun as any of his older work. Even with the moldy peaches, adam was full of fun and lyrics that would drive your brain wild. Adam is a cool guy, no doubt, but this cd just rubbed me the wrong way totally. His other work is so, so, so much better! I've seen Adam live and he does put on a good show, and his band is the coolest.

Album Description
With a style that steps closer to the likes of Bacharach and Brel with each release, Adam Green has created Gemstones, his third solo record, combining his singular songwriting vision and plaintive, almost-angelic tenor with elegant melodies and playful art-pop arrangements. Gemstones is an album whose songs transcend indie rock in favor of more enduring virtues, and it offers 15 prime examples of Green's sculpted-yet-irreverent songcraft that has won him a sizable and ever-increasing audience in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan, where he's toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller and The Strokes.

Garbage.......2006-10-22
Gemstones is a great song because it reminds me of why Adam Green had appeal. The rest of this album is so bad I could vomit. Please retire Adam Green or go back to your roots when your songs had feeling.
Adam Green is the newest Hans Christian Anderson.......2005-04-06
adam green's "Gemstones" is a wonderful collection of fun ditties that brings one's inner child. The songs remind one of nursery rhymes sung by a 30-year-old child. every song evokes a feeling of happiness. five stars to the new master of children's songs for adults.
A breath of fresh air in a world of crap!.......2005-04-03
I love this album! I've heard a lot about adam but I did not hear him until just the other day, man was I missing out. Great album full of weird and funny as hell songs,it's so great to hear something original out there in a world of copycats. highly recomended. 4.5*
Maturity.......2005-03-25
Adam Green spent a lot of time in the band The Moldy Peaches. Right when people were getting into their odd style, they broke up, and Kimya Dawson and Green started doing their solo records. Adam Green started off doing something that was like Beck's younger brother. Finally on Gemstones, Green has hit his stride. Gemstones I suppose a reference to those people who get their cell phones decorated. The album cover is adorned with those things. Adam Green's voice even sounds different and nothing like Moldy Peaches. He sounds like a mix between Ray Stevens and early Nick Cave. His authoritative voice soars on "Gemstones" and "He's The Brat." Some of these songs have the elegance of Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy). Some of the songs like "Crackhouse Blues" and "Choke On A C---" lyrically sound like Moldy Peaches territory, but these sound more like early Dr. Demento stuff. I guess that maybe the Moldy Peaches would have been on Dr. Demento every week if they came out in 1980. Songs like "Who's Your Boyfriend" sound like Burt Bacharach. Adam Green is becoming more sophisticated. Young girls seem to love him. You have to admire what he does because it is so unique, singular, and uncompromising. This is a quality recording....
Check this out.......2005-03-02
If you liked Adam Green's last 2 albums, then you will dig this one. I can't believe spin magazine gave this album a D rating, its more in the A range, shows what they know. That caused me to not to buy it at first, but after sampling it, I realized that I love Adam's music, how bad can this be? That pissed me off enough to write a review about this album. Adam has a great voice, truely unique lyrics, great guitar riffs, and just good music all together. Each listen brings new things that stand out in the music. Plain and simple, if you liked his previous albums, then you will like this one.

Great song.......2005-01-26
I haven't heard the whole EP, but I've heard the song Emily on the radio. I'm dying to get my hands on it. A lot of Green's songs degenerate quickly into meanlingless lyrics. This one is fun, and holds together much better. It's kind of an upbeat honky-tonk song about wanting to marry a young lady named Emily. He moves on to other girls, the end of one verse rhyming into the start of the next like an old folk song.

THIS is the gemstone........2005-02-26
Fans of the Moldy Peaches, you will not be disappointed but delighted at Adam's great solo effort. Who can help but love this guy? Our favorite stoner delivers a great bunch of chilled-out, comic gems. Opener "Apples, I'm Home" gives off a kind of wacky/silly vibe which seems to almost be a 'theme' for the rest of the album. "Mozzarella Swastikas" is hardly any tamer than the first few tracks. "I'll be getting head, under the rainbow" Green sings in his dazed voice. This type of lyric is definitely not unusual nor surprising as you'll find bizarre lyrics such as this throughout the entire album. Adam Green is CERTAINLY not for everyone; If you're into quirky folktarts or are just curious...check him out.
Beware.......2003-11-26
This CD is one my favorites of all time, but if you don't listen to The Moldy Peaches, and if you've never been in a garage band, you may not understand. This songwriter writes about things that are real and doesn't clean them up before he puts them to music.
The new style is definitely to be an acoustic guitar-toting sensitive songwriting guy, but the truth of the matter is that Adam Green doesn't fit into that hole, despite the Logo T-shirt and the velvet jacket and corduroy pants. If you wanna hear the world from the lips and instrument of someone who'll say what you wish some guy would say to you, buy John Mayer or Howie Day. If you wanna hear about what life is and the torrent of mixed realitites that is humanity, sexuality and sensuality, porn and erotica, abuse and love and death and tenderness and anger, that's Adam Green. I listen to hours and days of the two albums and he can't be figured out. Like mank and ind.
it's good.......2003-03-21
The music and lyrics are great, but it is a little rough around the edges. I garuntee that if you like Ben Kweller and The Flaming Lips, you'll like Adam Green. The next Album will probably be really great.
Unique, perverse and utterly original........2003-03-15
I first came to know that Adam Green of the Moldy Peaches did solo work when he, along with Ben Kweller, opened for the Strokes on their recent tour. He only played for about twenty minutes, just guitar with drums on two songs, but he blew me away. Unlike a lot of acoustic guitar-wielding singer-songwriters, Adam does not rely on introspective and limp-wristed lyrics. (Wow, that's a lot of hyphens.) He instead turns to surreal, sometimes vulgar, but always captivating phrases, as on "Mozzarella Swastikas" and "Computer Show." He occasionally delves in to brutal garage rock, ("Baby's Gonna Die Tonight"), or electronic experimentation, ("Apples, I'm Home"), but for the most part this album is just Adam and his guitar.
Many of these songs were recorded at home, (you can water running on a couple of them!), with his brother Joel helpng out on clarinet and his sister Leah lending harmony vocals.
All in all, "Garfield" by Adam Green is a creative, blunt and always compelling album.
Good night and thank you for your time.
Best Of 2002 List: #14 (tied with Kimya Dawson).......2003-01-13
In 2002 The Moldy Peaches decided that they would take a break from each other and see how well their sound held up individually. I must report that it does hold up quite well, but that nothing in the world could possibly match craziness that ensues when the two of them are together. Unlike the majority of the populous (well, The Moldy Peaches-aware populous, so like...10 people) I so far prefer Adam's solo work to Kimya's, but not by a whole lot. The most noticeable difference between these solo albums and their work as a duo, as far as sound anyway, is an even lower quality production. It almost sounds like they recorded straight to vinyl and then dubbed it to an 8-track tape. This can be trying at times, but it doesn't detract enough from the overall quality of the songs to really matter. The bottom line is that you should own The Moldy Peaches excellent debut before you even *consider* either of these, and then it's your choice from there.
