Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Essential for Floyd fanatics as well as those wishing to hear just how terrific a live concert can sound. --S. Duda

4 out of 5 stars Better than the studio version.......2007-05-25

I got this as a gift from a friend and was first impressed with the very nice package of great photos and artwork. Honestly, it sat around for a while before I listened to it because I was never really that excited about The Wall as an album. Finally I listened from beginning to end and was pleasently surprised. I think this version is much better than the original studio release as it has a more cohesive feel to it and is not nearly as disjointed. The audio quality is fantastic too. The studio version was recorded in four different studios if I remember correctly, and you can tell. Here, the band is performing to visual presentations onstage so everything must stay together, and of course, there is always something magical about a live performance that you can't reproduce in the studio. All of the earlier PF live stuff is great though, like Cruel But Fair for example.

This is a must have for the hard core Floyd fan! Don't buy the cheesy two disc set, get the box set, it is a far better presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now!.......2007-05-07

My boss at work recently lent this to me- at first I thought I would burn myself a copy- but the minute I put it in my player I knew I just had to buy it! Like every other Floyd experience, this is magical too.

Thank you Steve :)

5 out of 5 stars Where's the legimite DVD?.......2007-04-26

5 stars for the audio CD...

But, more than a review I would like to ask if the "Is there Anybody Out there?/The Wall Pink Floyd" has been released on DVD as well?.

I have seen some DVDs on sale under the name of "The Wall at the Earls Court" but according to some reviews there...that DVD is a pirate DVD, nothing to do with this Audio CD.

Is There Anybody Out There...to help me?

1 out of 5 stars Careful what you get!.......2007-01-25

The music is great, the bad rating is for Amazon. Although I've ordered the limited edtion, I received the "simple" editon. Of course, I got my money my money back (thanks for that) but I still wanted the limited edition. When I contacted Amazon, they've told me there is no way to ensure that I'll get the right edition and that it seems there is a problem with this product.

5 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-12-28

I never liked the studio version of 'The Wall'. All in all, I believe Roger Waters lost his mind and slipped into complete megalomania while they recorded their epic double album of despair. Of course, the wall has a group of outstanding songs that should have made up a single album. As a double album/cd somewhere along the way the music starts taking the listener down a one-way path to places that aren't very interesting at all.

That said I still have to give this live edition 5 stars. Why? It's a bloody good show. If you can get beyond the whining of Waters and concentrate on what he and the band accomplished theatrically then I believe you will find this a considerably enjoyable experience.

Plus, it's really cool to go back in time and hear Comfortably Numb played live for one of the first times ever. That's amazing in itself.

3 out of 5 stars Unique Approach To A Live Album Will Appeal To True Fans.......2002-11-20

"Live 1980-1986" is assembled like 4 separate live E.P.s rather than a traditional live album. Each of the two discs presents two different tours, so four are represented in total. Each tour gets 5 or 6 songs. The bands are different for each tour so it's easy to trace the evolution in Jackson's approach to music making. Casual fans may be put off by the fact that the versions of his two biggest hits are all quite different from their original studio incarnations. He gives three different takes on "Is She Really Going Out With Him", and frankly, none of the three appeal to me nearly as much as the original. On his other big hit, "Steppin' Out", he slows the song down dramatically, and the result is hypnotic - it's my second favorite cut on the album. My favorite is "Fools In Love", which is played at a slow tempo similar to the original, but is fleshed out and stretched out to over 7 minutes. Most of the other tracks stick closer to their original arrangements, but with some interesting variations, such as the punchy horns added to "Sunday Papers". I think this collection is a great souvenir for the true believers, but I think those with only a casual interest in Jackson's music will find it unessential.

4 out of 5 stars He makes the old stuff sound new.......2000-12-24

With this 2-disc set Jackson has taken many of his old classics and lesser-known tunes and given them new arrangements. He might "jazz up" and rock tune, speed up a slow song, or at least make the orchestrations more lush and "big" sounding. Some highlights are a version of "You Can't Get What You Want (Til You Know What You Want)" that is peppier than the original, a bouncy horn section added to "Sunday Papers", and a general spirit of fun that comes across best with live peformance, no matter what song. He has one of the tightest touring bands you'll ever hear, perfectly at home playing big-band jazz, rock, ballads, or a blend of all three. Just because Jackson stopped charting singles in the early 1980's doesn't mean that he should be forgotten by us. It's a fun record to listen to, and with around 90 minutes of material there's plenty to please just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Which Joe Jackson do you like?.......2000-10-29

One of the best rock musicians, and one of the most underestimated. Jackson can do any music style he wants, and do it good. Listen to the 3 versions of "Is she really going out with him" - there's a good demonstration to that. This dbl. CD album takes us to his best years, 1980-86, from the beginning in England to the breakthrough in America. From his days of punk rock to the acoustic-jazz oriented music. This album is better than "Summer in the city" (although Summer is a-5 star album too), and much more richer, and I wish I could have more of JJ live, cause the man doesn't stop to surprise me. Anyway, this is the time to mention 2 more great albums of his, besides the well known "Night and Day" and "Look sharp!": try "Big world" and the soundtrack of "Tucker" (don't try the soundtrack of "Mike's murder" that sounds like the weakest side of "Night and Day"). If you are bored by the uninspired musicians today, try JJ. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Live Albumn........2000-07-25

To put it frankly, this is Joe at his best. A must for fans.

4 out of 5 stars well,.......2000-03-17

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Priest's 1st visit to Denver USA.......2007-07-02

Not a bad recording considering it sounds like it was made directly from the sound board. New drummer Dave Holland sounds boring compared to the excellent drumming heard on "Unleashed in the east". The set list is pretty good and the sound level has some unexpected spikes. Rob Halford's voice is in good shape for most of the songs. Diehard fanatics should like this release that comes with a written history of the band including comments about post-Halford affairs. Rock out out if you can find this one anywhere!

With extraordinary talent, Seeger addresses salient social issues--his trademark for over 50 years--in song: If I Had a Hammer, Greensleeves, and We Shall Not be Moved. The complete concert of 41 songs was recorded live in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University and illuminates the skill of a master performer and the dedication of an enduring political activist. 5 out of 5 stars The Best.......1998-09-07

Pete is a gift to us, one that will be certainly lost when he is gone. I got to see Pete and Arlo in concert and it was the best concert I've been to (including rock/pop stuff). This album is consumate Pete because he gets the crowd singing like a choir. There is no finer Seeger album than this. Pete's autographed picture hangs in my office and it is a treasure as is he.

Amazon.com essential recording

A 45-minute trip to bluegrass heaven, these 17 songs combine the talents of two unparalleled musical forces: Bill Monroe, the inventor of bluegrass, master of the mandolin, and owner of a bone-chilling, mountain tenor voice; and Doc Watson, the flatpicking genius with a soulful, mellow vocal tone. Much of the material stems from the legendary Monroe Brothers recordings. Their sublime harmonies carry plaintive ballads including "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul" and "Banks of the Ohio," and uptempo numbers such as "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." The roaring fiddle tunes are simply mind-blowing: "Soldier's Joy," "East Tennessee Blues," and "Fire on the Mountain" all rank as virtuosic masterpieces. If it's possible, the pairing exceeds all expectations. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

The essential genius of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson resides in their ability to infuse traditional American music with their distinctive musical personalities. Their unparalleled vocal and instrumental skills complement one another on these rare, previously unreleased duets. "...chronicles the early meetings of two instrumental geniuses. -- Billboard

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You've already lived too long without this album.......2002-07-03

Buy this one. This is one of my 5 favorite albums of all time. The harmonies just kill me, and the instrumentals are enough to drive me mad.

No mandolinist would ever say that he's better than Monroe, and no flatpick guitarist would ever say that he's better than Doc. These are the two originals...the two masters...and it's just the two of them through the whole thing.

Do a favor to yourself and the country...buy this album, and let everyone you know have a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Doc and Bill pickin' a few licks!.......2001-12-12

Great album. Traditional fiddle tunes/hoedowns and early bluegrass tunes (most of them written by Monroe) played in an intimate relaxed setting. Some of Monroe's best Mandolin picking. Doc is exceptional as always.

Great album for musicians. With only two instruments playing, you can really hear what they're doing. Singing combination is very interesting as well: Bill's famous high tenor and Doc's deep, melodious voice.

This is a great album by two masters of traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars Like a hoe-down on Heaven's back porch ..........2001-11-30

Monroe and Watson are, of course, masters of their considerably crowded domain, and this recording shows why. Just a couple of amazing musicians having some fun together -- relaxed and loose but with plenty of sparks a-flyin'. The fingers are picking fast and furious. The vocals are superb, and some of the instrumental runs are simply breathtaking. Recording quality is more than acceptable.

The whole thing plays like a jam session at the country barbecue of your dreams. But it today and watch it get stuck in your CD player for days on end.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Great.......2000-11-01

This is a tremendous album by two of the legends of bluegrass music. If you like bluegrass (or just great music for that matter), you'll be blown away by these live, relatively loose jam sessions where their virtuosity and vocal skill is incredibly apparent. A must...

5 out of 5 stars First rate from 2 masters!.......2000-06-13

This CD makes you wish that Doc & Big Mon had done so much more together. Several of the cuts are songs that the Monroe Brothers did and are just fabulous. If you like Doc and Monroe individually, you'll love them together.

    3 out of 5 stars Bootleg Dream.......2007-05-14

This is pretty good stuff! All Tangerine Dream fans who love electronica, this is the album for you. The recording is right before TD started to get into heavy sampling and computer generated sounds that dominated the albums from the mid-80's onward. This is a bootleg recording like the "sets" collection vol 1 & vol 2. The quality is very good and it is enjoyable to listen to. This is a good addition to any TD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Intensely psychadelic performance........2007-05-01

With less annoying crowd chatter than other Bootmon releases of their concerts this lets you enjoy the music for what it is...raw mindaltering electronic nirvanna. Not as slick and polished as modern day Tangerine Dream and sure the technology is a little bit dated but the performance has a palpable sustained almost feverish intensity that can never be recreated by anyone else(not even Tangerine Dream themselves).A literal blast from the past and a great collector's item.

      Album Description

R.L. Burnside is one of the most recognized bluesmen in the world. For years he has mesmerized audiences with his unique North Mississippi hill country blues style and has influenced a new generation of blues musicians. Memphis-based Inside Sounds has had a history of working with blues scholar David Evans, who recognized Burnside's extraordinary talent while he was still working in the cotton fields in North Mississippi. The seventeen tracks on "Raw Electric 1979-1980" have never been released before. Most of the recordings were made at Burnside's home near Independence, Mississippi, with a live audience participating. Although he is now known for a more refined studio sound, this CD depicts Burnside and his family band, The Sound Machine, approaching their music with a raw energy more akin to live performance. Song by song descriptions and rare photographs are included in the sixteen-page booklet.

      5 out of 5 stars Too bad I wasn't there..........2005-12-22

An absolutely first-rate performance, probably the last time the original Beach Boys played together, including Bruce Johnston. I never tire of this music, as uplifting today as ever. The music is so clear for a live recording that at first I thought it was a studio dub, but then I remembered reading that their amps went directly into the sound board as opposed to being miked individually. Just great, great, great.

3 out of 5 stars Rare cuts in concert.......2005-03-28

This concert is one of the last ones to feature Brian and Dennis both. It also is one of the last ones to still include material that was new at the time (it was taped 6/21/1980 in Knebworth, England) and because a few songs did better chartwise in the U.K. than in the Boys' home country, you get versions of "Lady Lynda" and "Cotton Fields". Despite those exceptions, though, the band had begun to turn into the "oldies jukebox" and most of the material is pre-"Pet Sounds".

Performancewise, it veers a bit but for the most part the vocals are good and the instrumental passion is there actually improving some songs over the studio versions. It's obvious that the band was still "working out" the set, though (Al Jardine asks "Are we gonna do a medley thing again?" prior to starting "Cotton Fields").

      PEAKS:
Dennis shouting "Eat your heart out, Elton John!" as he took the piano spot for "Help Me Rhonda" (Elton was the headliner for his "Captain Fantastic" tour and debuted the album for the first time live that day). "Keepin' the Summer Alive" BURIES the studio version...the guitars smoke and the acappella break is tight. "Lady Lynda" was only on bootlegs in live shows before this and is good (Al's a little weak on some of the verses but the final group acappella coda shimmers..especially after someone (Mike?) shouts "one more time.." and they do it again)
"Do it Again" is tough-edged.Carl puts in a fine vocal on "Darlin'", "School Days" is fabulous live, and the "fun/sun" portion of the show sounds better than it often does. "Help Me Rhonda" benefits from a great Ed Carter guitar solo..Mike Meros on organ is all over the keyboard for "Surfin' U.S.A.".."I Get Around" is stellar..and an extended "Good Vibrations" has the crowd really into it.

      VALLEYS:
The final encore on "Fun Fun Fun" is actually the WEAKEST performance of the 'encore set' (track 19 and up). "Barbara Ann" has a flaccid vocal from Bruce (I believe...it doesn't say but it SOUNDS like him). Mike is painfully nasal on "Be True to Your School". As others have noted, the CD should NOT have been named "Good Timin'" when it's not on the disc (Also, after the liners talk up "Santa Ana Winds" it's not wise to omit that track also. Two bad moves in choosing which ones made the cut)

      BOTTOM LINE:
This is not their best official live show (that's "In Concert 1973") but it is the only non-bootleg to have "School Days","Cotton Fields","Keepin' the Summer Alive","Lady Lynda","Rock and Roll Music" or Dennis' version of "You are So Beautiful" and they all sound pretty decent. A good one to get AFTER you already have "In Concert 1973" and the twofer with "Concert (1964)/Live in London". It's only essential if you have those two and want more...

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great performance.......2005-03-09

A live show from 1980-- if I'm not mistaken, the last tour to feature Brian, Dennis and Carl. By this point, the Mike Love touring jukebox concept (i.e. play the same surf and car songs over and over again) was already in effect, but the Wilson brothers kept the set honest-- its a pretty good mix or early and later material.

The performance itself is extremely high quality-- by this point, the touring band was tight, and their execution is relatively flawless. The vocals are top notch, as you would expect (although Brian sounds a bit shaky here and ther). Highlights for me are pretty varied, certainly Mike's shout of "BRIAN WILSON!" after the first line of "Sloop John B", the new material ("School Days", new to the Boys at least and "Keepin' the Summer Alive") comes off really well, and Dennis' impassioned "You Are So Beautiful" are all really great, and there's really no going wrong with "Heroes and Villains" in my book.

Several tracks were cut from the live show-- "In My Room", "Good Timin'", "Catch a Wave", "Some of Your Love", "I Write the Songs", "Santa Ana Winds", and "Wouldn't It Be Nice"-- these I suspect would have distinctly improved the show, though they would have biased away from the surf & car stuff, which I suspect was the intent by the track selection. Personally, I would've rather had the whole show on a double, but that's just me.

Truth is, the show doesn't really grab me enough to make me come back to it over and over again. Good enough, but not great.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Shows Decline.......2004-01-23

This is historic cd, as it doucments the last time all 5 original Beach Boys (plus late bloomer Bruce Johnston) performing live on a UK stage together. It has some very good moments but also quite a few flaws. This documents the band's troubled leader Brian Wilson at his worst. He is essnetially a backing musician here, his chubby frame hidden behind a piano for the majority of the cd (he brifly moves over to the electric piano on "Help Me Rhonda", but that's not important), and he contributes brief lines on "Sloop John B" and "Surfer Girl". The rest of the band is in tip - top shape. Carl gives the single best liveperformance of his career with his stunning performance of "God Only Knows", Al gives us an interesting "Cottonfields"/"Heroes And Villains" medley, Mike Love owns the show, Bruce Johnston doesn't really contribute much, and Dennis performs a beautiful version of "You Are So Beautiful".

Overall this is a very good album, though it does not rank anywhere 1973's "In Concert" and defintely shows signs of their decline which brought them to becoming nothing more than a traveling jukebox.

      5 out of 5 stars A great live band..........2003-12-29

...performing at its peak. Many (certainly not all) of the Beach Boys' in-concert standards are included. Sure, the band members squabbled, like many siblings (and cousins) we know, which is also one reason why Brian Wilson hated touring. But this never stopped the Boys from putting on a great concert.

Knebworth may also be our best opportunity to hear the exquisite voice and wonderful energy of Carl Wilson, who served as the artistic "heart" of the band during the "post-Brian" era, until his untimely death from cancer in 1998 at age 51. Carl's lead on Darlin', God Only Knows and several other songs here is breathtaking.

For Beach Boys fans, this CD (along with the DVD) is a must-own.
