Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Essential for Floyd fanatics as well as those wishing to hear just how terrific a live concert can sound. --S. DudaCustomer Reviews:

This is a must have for the hard core Floyd fan! Don't buy the cheesy two disc set, get the box set, it is a far better presentation.

Where's the legimite DVD?.......2007-04-26
But, more than a review I would like to ask if the "Is there Anybody Out there?/The Wall Pink Floyd" has been released on DVD as well?.
I have seen some DVDs on sale under the name of "The Wall at the Earls Court" but according to some reviews there...that DVD is a pirate DVD, nothing to do with this Audio CD.

A piece of history.......2006-12-28
That said I still have to give this live edition 5 stars. Why? It's a bloody good show. If you can get beyond the whining of Waters and concentrate on what he and the band accomplished theatrically then I believe you will find this a considerably enjoyable experience.
Plus, it's really cool to go back in time and hear Comfortably Numb played live for one of the first times ever. That's amazing in itself.

Amazon.com essential recording
A 45-minute trip to bluegrass heaven, these 17 songs combine the talents of two unparalleled musical forces: Bill Monroe, the inventor of bluegrass, master of the mandolin, and owner of a bone-chilling, mountain tenor voice; and Doc Watson, the flatpicking genius with a soulful, mellow vocal tone. Much of the material stems from the legendary Monroe Brothers recordings. Their sublime harmonies carry plaintive ballads including "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul" and "Banks of the Ohio," and uptempo numbers such as "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." The roaring fiddle tunes are simply mind-blowing: "Soldier's Joy," "East Tennessee Blues," and "Fire on the Mountain" all rank as virtuosic masterpieces. If it's possible, the pairing exceeds all expectations. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description
The essential genius of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson resides in their ability to infuse traditional American music with their distinctive musical personalities. Their unparalleled vocal and instrumental skills complement one another on these rare, previously unreleased duets. You've already lived too long without this album.......2002-07-03
No mandolinist would ever say that he's better than Monroe, and no flatpick guitarist would ever say that he's better than Doc. These are the two originals...the two masters...and it's just the two of them through the whole thing.
Do a favor to yourself and the country...buy this album, and let everyone you know have a listen.
Doc and Bill pickin' a few licks!.......2001-12-12
Great album for musicians. With only two instruments playing, you can really hear what they're doing. Singing combination is very interesting as well: Bill's famous high tenor and Doc's deep, melodious voice.
This is a great album by two masters of traditional music.

Album Description
R.L. Burnside is one of the most recognized bluesmen in the world. For years he has mesmerized audiences with his unique North Mississippi hill country blues style and has influenced a new generation of blues musicians. Memphis-based Inside Sounds has had a history of working with blues scholar David Evans, who recognized Burnside's extraordinary talent while he was still working in the cotton fields in North Mississippi. The seventeen tracks on "Raw Electric 1979-1980" have never been released before. Most of the recordings were made at Burnside's home near Independence, Mississippi, with a live audience participating. Although he is now known for a more refined studio sound, this CD depicts Burnside and his family band, The Sound Machine, approaching their music with a raw energy more akin to live performance. Song by song descriptions and rare photographs are included in the sixteen-page booklet.

Too bad I wasn't there..........2005-12-22
Rare cuts in concert.......2005-03-28
Performancewise, it veers a bit but for the most part the vocals are good and the instrumental passion is there actually improving some songs over the studio versions. It's obvious that the band was still "working out" the set, though (Al Jardine asks "Are we gonna do a medley thing again?" prior to starting "Cotton Fields").
PEAKS:
Dennis shouting "Eat your heart out, Elton John!" as he took the piano spot for "Help Me Rhonda" (Elton was the headliner for his "Captain Fantastic" tour and debuted the album for the first time live that day). "Keepin' the Summer Alive" BURIES the studio version...the guitars smoke and the acappella break is tight. "Lady Lynda" was only on bootlegs in live shows before this and is good (Al's a little weak on some of the verses but the final group acappella coda shimmers..especially after someone (Mike?) shouts "one more time.." and they do it again)
"Do it Again" is tough-edged.Carl puts in a fine vocal on "Darlin'", "School Days" is fabulous live, and the "fun/sun" portion of the show sounds better than it often does. "Help Me Rhonda" benefits from a great Ed Carter guitar solo..Mike Meros on organ is all over the keyboard for "Surfin' U.S.A.".."I Get Around" is stellar..and an extended "Good Vibrations" has the crowd really into it.
VALLEYS:
The final encore on "Fun Fun Fun" is actually the WEAKEST performance of the 'encore set' (track 19 and up). "Barbara Ann" has a flaccid vocal from Bruce (I believe...it doesn't say but it SOUNDS like him). Mike is painfully nasal on "Be True to Your School". As others have noted, the CD should NOT have been named "Good Timin'" when it's not on the disc (Also, after the liners talk up "Santa Ana Winds" it's not wise to omit that track also. Two bad moves in choosing which ones made the cut)
BOTTOM LINE:
This is not their best official live show (that's "In Concert 1973") but it is the only non-bootleg to have "School Days","Cotton Fields","Keepin' the Summer Alive","Lady Lynda","Rock and Roll Music" or Dennis' version of "You are So Beautiful" and they all sound pretty decent. A good one to get AFTER you already have "In Concert 1973" and the twofer with "Concert (1964)/Live in London". It's only essential if you have those two and want more...
Good, but not great performance.......2005-03-09
The performance itself is extremely high quality-- by this point, the touring band was tight, and their execution is relatively flawless. The vocals are top notch, as you would expect (although Brian sounds a bit shaky here and ther). Highlights for me are pretty varied, certainly Mike's shout of "BRIAN WILSON!" after the first line of "Sloop John B", the new material ("School Days", new to the Boys at least and "Keepin' the Summer Alive") comes off really well, and Dennis' impassioned "You Are So Beautiful" are all really great, and there's really no going wrong with "Heroes and Villains" in my book.
Several tracks were cut from the live show-- "In My Room", "Good Timin'", "Catch a Wave", "Some of Your Love", "I Write the Songs", "Santa Ana Winds", and "Wouldn't It Be Nice"-- these I suspect would have distinctly improved the show, though they would have biased away from the surf & car stuff, which I suspect was the intent by the track selection. Personally, I would've rather had the whole show on a double, but that's just me.
Truth is, the show doesn't really grab me enough to make me come back to it over and over again. Good enough, but not great.
Very Good, But Shows Decline.......2004-01-23
Overall this is a very good album, though it does not rank anywhere 1973's "In Concert" and defintely shows signs of their decline which brought them to becoming nothing more than a traveling jukebox.
A great live band..........2003-12-29
Knebworth may also be our best opportunity to hear the exquisite voice and wonderful energy of Carl Wilson, who served as the artistic "heart" of the band during the "post-Brian" era, until his untimely death from cancer in 1998 at age 51. Carl's lead on Darlin', God Only Knows and several other songs here is breathtaking.
For Beach Boys fans, this CD (along with the DVD) is a must-own.
