The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."

The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley

Snow..the hit from the soundtrack.......2007-07-11

Okay, I am going to review one song, and not the entire album (yeah, yeah. Go ahead with the negative votes). But please read on.

For the past two days I've been listening to one song, Snow, over and over. The cool thing is with iTunes repeat, it's the kind of song that just undulates into highs and lows, mellow and rapping and metal and back to mellow; like it never ends (and by the way, I DON'T do drugs anymore. Just want to clarify).

This is what the Chili Peppers represent to me. They have that definite sound that's been imitated ad-infinitum. But they started that sound (at least for white people) and added the heavy guitars to rapping found only in Run DMC's second hit, Rock Box back in the early 80s. Punk? Yeah. Well, that's just part of their story. Much more multicultural than that.

But what I want to say is, you know how there's that song that represents a certain time in your life? I call them life soundtrack songs. They're powerful and give you goose bumps, and you remember that time when you were, say, just walking down the street, and this beautiful serene rhythm took over from hearing that one song. Two years from now I'll try to recapiture this song's impact, but it will be second hand by then.

So, thank you Chili Peppers, for coming up with what I see as tPart II of that beautiful/desperate epic of pain and resurrection; Under the Bridge. That's when I knew you guys were incredible, and that you'd been there.

You know.

And that it made you better in the long run.

RHCP have been my favorite band for years. As you can imagine I was hungry for their new material. I bought this immediately after it came out and all I can say is WOW! This is, by far, their best work. THey show such a range of musical talent from balladry to hard rock to funk (often in just one song). Even thought it is a double CD set, they have left me craving for more. Let's just say, I have had a year to totally wear it out.

Best Peppers Album.......2007-06-28

Stadium Arcadium may be the best album of 2006 and the best thing the Chilli Peppers have ever done. The band just keeps getting better with each album since John Frusciante came back for Californication. His influence on the band is immense and Chilli Peppers have been at their best when he is there. That is not to say that the other members take a back seat. Keidis especially shines with his more mature lyrics and vocals. The sound is all Chilli Peppers. Older fans complain that the songs is not as funky but I think they just need to listen a bit harder. There is plenty here to go around for everyone and all of it is good.

The Killers match postpunk guitars with a synthesizer overlay that recalls '80s New Wave without burying their sound in nostalgia. Yes, I do play it an awful lot and I'm not afraid to say so. This has so many great tracks on it; I really can't think of one I don't like, though I do have my favorites. Pop it in and it will help you get your work done in the home or yard. I really need to order their next album as well, Keep it up, Brandon and boys.

A Lovely Journey.......2007-06-02

I have to admit, when I first heard "Mr. Brightside" back in 2004 I wrote these guys off as new wave copycats devoid of their own creative force. Boy was I EVER wrong!!! Fast forward 3 years later. After hearing "Read My Mind" from their "Sam's Town" album and instantly falling in love with it, I went back, gave this album a fair listen from top to bottom and I was blown away. Sure, the influence of 80's new wave with it's blasting bass lines and sonic-filled synthesizers are there, but they've pulled off in such a way that makes this offering fresh without giving the listener a nostalgia hangover. The playing by the band is tight, groovy, and as catchy as an STD in Africa (okay, bad analogy but you get my drift). Brandon Flowers' voice is awesome in the weirdest way. It's pitchy, squeamish and loud at times, but somehow you fall in love with it. Overall, I believe that this album should be considered a modern day classic. Rock on Killers!

I will admit that i do like Sams Town better.But none the less this album is still absolutey fabolous.The Killers and Coldplay are the only 2 bands albums where i can listen to there albums without skipping songs.This band is just so fantasic in so many differnt ways and for all you people who think that they are just another average band i seriously think that is so false.Other than Franz Ferindad i really dont know any other band like The Killers.And even Franz doesn't really stand up to The Killers.Also these guys are mind blowing live.I've recentyl attended there concert in Atlanta and it was the best show i've been to.I will be a killers fan for a long long time and there cd's will never leave my car cd player lol

Some good stuff, missing lots, HORRID sound quality.......2007-07-05

I'm not going to into track selection much. You can see the track selection yourself fairly easily. I will say all the songs on this album I enjoy.

However, the sound quality is as bad as it gets. It's easily the loudest album I own, and anything that was the chili peppers is flattened out as much as possible. Give It Away is a far, far cry from the original release quality.

Do yourself a favor, since RHCP have only released a few albums in the past 15 years, pick those up individually (you'll get 90% of this Greatest Of by picking up their last 3 releases). Then track down the ORIGINAL ISSUES of RHCP's early stuff, they used to care about sound quality and had some really great stuff back in the day. Just don't get fooled by the "Remastered" editions, they will have hacked sound quality just so it can sound as loud as modern releases.

i've admired RHCP for a very long time. always considered them a HIGLY underrated band. they create such funky, original, alternative rock music. they just have a sound that no one has. this album is probably my fave from them. they've slowed it down a bit, with less funky stuff but it's still as good. i love Scar tissue. there's not much slow, sad, soul- serching songs (which this is) that can sound good. this does. i absolutely loved it when i first heard it. love the guitar hook. californication is another masterpiece with an amazing guitar sound. "all around the world" is an awesome album opener! it's rockin, funky; it just shows that there's no one doing music like the Peppers. that song is 100% quality. i also enjoyed "Right on time" very disco and funky. i also liked This velvet glove, get on top, and definitely Emmit remmus. almost all the songs sound good! kiedis' voice also soars on this album. as i said i love when artists evolve their sound and don't come with the same thing over and over (Beyonce). i'm so tried of fake artists with fake sounds. the peppers definitely moved to another level with this album but a few songs still had their old funk. too bad they are not recognized as much as they should be.

"Californication" is an absolute masterpiece! I have recently become a RHCP fan and have some of their CDS. I have to say that "Californication" is probably one of their best. It's very original. Even if you aren't a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, you should at least give this album a listening to. If you do, i think you would be pleasantly surprised. It was worth every penny.

quick review: Rhcp is one of the best bands ever! if you love their funk/funk get this album! it mixes funk, hip hop, and rock for an awesome, original sound! the best are: suck my kiss, give it away, blood sugar sex magik, under the bridge, sir psycho sexy. but almost every song sounds good! a rare feat for artists! they took their time to create this great album! if you noticed when they do a hits album, most of the songs come from this album b/c the songs are so good!

Everyone likes saving money right? Ok, here's how to save money if you like the RHCP, buy this album from their catalogue only! If you must listen to the new stuff, turn on any popular radio station for no longer than ten minutes and get your fix. This album falls into the very exclusive "masterpiece" club. Every and I mean EVERY song on this album is perfect. The songs flow in unity from start to finish. This album sounds like nothing before it and nothing after it, besides every RHCP release which follows. Which brings me back to saving money. Now there's nothing wrong with the RHCP releases after this album there all good but only one or two songs from every album stands up to the complete Blood Sugar album. Its almost as if they release new albums to suck in new young fans that haven't heard the album before the new one. This is the RHCP at their very best and all one needs to satisfy the RHCP bug.

The person below me is an absolute ignorant a-hole. 311 has zero artistic value when in comparison with RHCP. Call me when 311 writes ANYTHING with the merit that even begins to touch "Under the Bridge." Have you even heard of something called chord progression? because I'll tell you one thing, 311 sure hasn't.

And I can't believe that you even have audacity to bring up lyrics. First of all, most of the songs are funk rock, Thusly, it's party music: i.e. Sir Psycho Sexy, which is brilliant in its own way. Secondly, the songs that do call for different lyrical composition come through in every which way. Are you seriosuly trying to tell me that 311 has a song more meaningful than "Power of Equality?" Do you even listen to the lyrics? I think not.

Lyrical abilities aside, you must realize that you are basically taking Chad Smith, and extremely respected rock drummer, John Frusciante, hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and Flea, (debatably)THE greatest rock bassist of all time, and saying that what many people believe is their greatest piece of work in BSSM, is garbage. I just hope you didn't listen one time and write that bull****. If so, your review is all the more less credible because you fail to realize one of the most key compenents to good music; the fact that it grows on you and it takes more than one listen. You just can't absorb it all in one take.

I have nothing against 311, they're not a bad band. But it's hard to give you any respect when you rip a band like Nirvana at the end of your review. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but you have to see that you are contradicting yourself when millions of people love BSSM and Nevermind and you just shut that down like you are some kind of all knowing god.

Anyways, just to add some of my own opinion, this is my favorite album of all time and will always be. I feel like although the chili peppers have moved on and continue to make world class music they will never top what they did in 1991. Just too much emotion, attitude and musical ability when into that album. They went into it with something to prove and just ripped it up. I think Stadium Arcadium is definitely a step down for them. It's a great record but it lacks some of the artistic maerit that they had in their last four albums (minus OHM).

First off, this isn't an apology to Brian, because you don't deserve it, you ignorant A-hole.

The Peppers have their own sound, but it's too bad they suck. THe band (besides Anthony) are very talented, but the playing just don't go together very well. I like 311 better because they play funk better, they don't seem to try to force everything, everything just goes together so well, their synergy is just great.

Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer because they just don't seem to fit together. No doubt the whole band is very talented, but they go together, they just dont' seem to blend as well. Anthony is a cheesy vocalist. The lyrics on here are mostly on the same topic, sex and drugs, which gets old after a while. He can't sing either. His later lyrics cleary were a step up from the pointless lyrics he does during this time.

Basically, I dont like their sound, although the bass is something to check out. It's not worth it to me, I find nothing special about this band, although I give them points for talent and originality.

a mix of old and new.......2007-06-16

What I like best about this album is that you get a peak of their past funk style and their jump over the threshold into rock. It has every element of their many layered canvas. No band is more honest or true to themselves as this band. Although 'Under the Bridge' became their signature song at the time, it pays to listen to every song before this classic. Anything after Naked in the Rain, which follows UTB is a bit more graphic and may need to be monitored for younger audiences. My favorite is the funky rock tune, Righteous and the Wicked which proceeds immediately to the best version (studio versus live) of 'Give it Away'. You will not be sorry. Any new RHCP fan must appreciate their past to love their present.

No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.

The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

HOT ROCKS 1964-1971 IS THE BEGINNING'S AND MAKING'S OF A ROCK N' ROLL PHENOMENAL LEGACY........2007-06-24

I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation 2-CD set entitled "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" by the second all-time greatest band in Rock n' Roll history that has also been called THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD. I give you England's second most favorite sons, the reigning and defending World Champions of Rock n' Roll, T-H-E R-O-L-L-I-N-G S-T-O-N-E-S! "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" was originally released in 1972 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the London / ABKCO Records label which is the Decca Record Company Ltd. Looking through the history of this compilation album, there were three different releases of this album on CD. This legendary compilation album would see its first release on a 2-CD set in 1985 on the ABKCO / London Records label which is the registered trademark of Decca Record Company Ltd. The 1985 release did one of the very first Analogue to Digital mastering ever by Mobile Fidelity Sound and is manufactured by PolyGram in Hanover, West Germany. The 1985 release is one of the most sought after collectibles around if you can find it. This compilation album would be re-released in 1986 on the ABKCO Records label noting that the recording's were Digitally remastered from original master recordings. Which now brings me to the new and most recent 2002 re-release also on the ABKCO Records label. The new 2002 re-release contains the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) Remastered encoding process which is to supposedly capture every detail and nuance of the original master tapes. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

PLEASE NOTE: There has been a concern that I found extremely important to stress to all of you. It has been brought to my attention by some of my friends as well as some of my fellow readers and reviewers that the 2002 release is really not recorded in the DSD remastered encoding process. After doing my own research and conducting my own personal study, I find this fact to be true. I purchased two different "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" on a 2-CD set bearing and stating the DSD Remastered logo and packaged in a Digipak while the other is packaged in a jewel case. Looking at the discs itself, the two discs packed in the jewel case are not on gold discs while the two discs that are packaged in the Digipak are gold discs. Listening to both sets, there was a difference and improvement in the sound quality of the DSD Remastered on the two gold discs packaged in the Digipak. There was no improvement on the other two discs. Personally, in my opinion, the very first 1985 CD release sounds better than the other two CD re-releases ever did. I just thought that I would clear this up and help in making you the consumers more aware of what you are purchasing.

What can I possibly say about THE ROLLING STONES that hasn't already been said? THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's second all-time greatest anthems ever. THE STONES would also be known the world over for inventing the Rock n' Roll lifestyle thus labeling them "the bad boys of Rock." When ROLLING STONES legendary frontman and Rock God Mick Jagger met up with his old childhood chum, guitarist Keith Richards, their true friendship and bond would be special which would last up to this very day. However, when Jagger and Richards met up and joined forces with the original and genuine prince of darkness himself, the late great ROLLING STONES founder, leader and guitarist Brian Jones, Brian Jones' replacement, guitarist Mick Taylor, bassist Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts and the late quitely known pianist, Ian "Stu" Stewart, THE ROLLING STONES would be born resulting in modifying the mixture of Blues, Jazz and Rock n' Roll together thus giving their sound a new rich and pure quality that the British could truly call their own. In closing, THE ROLLING STONES have been on Rock's ultimate pedestal on and off for many years now taking where THE BEATLES left off. However, THE STONES have also had their fair share of tragedies and tribulations to contend with such as the untimely deaths of both Brian Jones in 1969 and Ian "Stu" Stewart in 1985. Despite THE STONES fatalities, THE ROLLING STONES have persevered and continue to move forward in representing Rock n' Roll as being its only premiere act thus resulting in delivering the highest grossing tours of all time up to this very day. THE STONES have already received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. THE ROLLING STONES have forever left more than their fair shares of their many mark's and place's in Rock n Roll history. And because of that my fellow Rock n' Rollers, THE ROLLING STONES will NEVER be forgotten or denied even if they tried. Rolling Stones Hot Rocks SACD.......2007-06-13

For any Stones fan, I think this was the culmination or consensus of the greatest hits album for any band. I have owned this title on vinyl, cd and now SACD. First of all, any compilation album is subject to the producer's vision, and I understand that. That is each song may have been produced differently.
On the first disc, it is obvious that the early days of stereo engineering meant separating everything into left and right, but the clarity of SACD really shines through.***Note** Just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's 5.1 surround. I was especially impressed with Ruby Tuesday. I finally can hear that the distortion in the left speaker is actually an over-mike'd cello and not (as I thought for years) some funky bass line.
The second CD really stood out with some great tunes, especially Honky Tonk Women and Midnight Rambler. I tend to prefer when songs are mixed as if I where listening to the band live. That is, I like the lead singer in the middle and drums behind the lead singer. Guitars, bass and backing vocals should be on either side. I was really disappointed with Gimme Shelter because this mix seemed to cram everything towards the center. I don't know if this was the original production or just this cd. The rest of the cd is great. Now if they can just re-engineer the Who's Who's Better, Who's Best on SACD, I'll be in Heaven. ***Another note*** This review may be nullified by the fact that, as my children have pointed out, I'm old, and as such, I can afford a lot better speakers than I could when I was young.

DSD Revives The Classics!.......2007-05-03

There's not much to add about the immense quality of the basic stereo versions of these songs. They are all immortal. However, this DSD (similar to SACD) brings out the subtle (and not so subtle) highs and lows of all tracks by accenting their high quality. Be aware that this is DSD and NOT SACD. It has to have the SACD logo to be SACD. That being said, you've never heard so clear a version of, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Wild Horses". The most fantastic version is of, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" which not only sounds like the first time you heard it - it sounds like they are in your living room! I jest not!

An Early And GREATEST Stage Of A Continuing Phenomenon.......2007-04-02

As a child of the 1960's (born in 1946), The Rolling Stones have made music that I have listened to at each stage of my adolescent and presumably post-adolescent life. At each juncture, their music has been through changes as has one or two of the band members, as have I! Asked when he planned to retire some years ago, Mick Jagger - in classic Mick Jagger style - responded something like, "... no one asks Muddy Waters or John Lee Hooker that question. Why are you asking me? I sing my version of the blues and plan to do so until I can't. That might include being wheeled out on stage in a wheelchair some years from now, still doing what I do as best as I can." That is not intended to be a direct quote, but is rather the way I recall hearing the story told and retold over the years. I recall it this way because it makes sense to me ... a LOT of sense. Often characterized as the quintessenal rock and toll band, The Rolling Stones were, are and I expect will continue to be and become a continuing phenomenon of musical expression. That being said, even bands that seem to go on forever have their stronger and weaker periods; their peaks of high creativity and valleys of times when they simply have to fulfill a contractual obligation by releasing an album and/or touring.

For most Stones fans, the period the collection at hand provides an unarguably thrilling sampling of is that in the years from 1964 to 1971 during which the Stones wrote, performed and recorded some of the greatest music in the continually developing story of the genre we call Rock and Roll.

This is a two CD set is produced on two layers. One is a `normal' CD, the second is a Super Audio CD (SACD). Both layers have been produced from the original takes using DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoding which does a simply tremendous job of capturing each and every subtle moment, tone and innuendo on each track - be it from voice or instrument. It actually sounds a lot better than the original recordings and is far superior to standard `remasterings' of older studio and/or live recordings. So, even though there are no real surprises on these CDs, there is much delight to be had by the Stones audiophile in hearing just how good they really sound(ed) during this period.

Whether you believe that the Stones are simply one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands to ever perform or that they are THE greatest, you will have no regrets about investing in this remarkably hypnotic, engaging and enthusiastic pair of CDs. La crème de la crème. The best of the best. Vocally, musically, ensemble-wide: in all measurable respects. Close your eyes and sing along - with your voice or in your mind. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

What a disaster!!! How could anyone like this lousy rock band? They have sold more than 20 lame albums and they most surely could not make good music at all. Mick Thornten,the lead singer just screams,can't sing,sounds more like baby just like Robert Plant. Keith Richmond is what I call the worst guitar player in the world,never took lessons,always out of tune,and only two string power chords. Willie Whatts is the worst drummer ever, he never could drum as good as Lars Ulrich(Metallica drummer). They even have put up some of the even more lousiest and worst songs ever made like Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, and Sympathy For The Devil. Even a Green Day CD has better music than this!

Great CD - Very happy with purchase.......2007-07-01

With the exception of 'I Really Love You' (I don't remember this one) I'm happy with the rest of the songs. The only thing they're missing are the hiss and pop of the old 45's. These are from the early 60 and the chart numbers (on the back of the case) show they were all in the top 30, mand 10 or higher. I'm going to wear the grooves out on this CD :-)

I received the 45's On CD Vol 2: 1961-1964, and already looking for more of these lost gems. Some of the songs I had on 45's which had worn with age and use. Now I can have the songs I grew up with forever on CD. Love it!! Bring out more of 'em.

When the Red Hot Chili Peppers first appeared smeared in neon body paint with socks dangling precariously from their wieners, even the most faithful funk-metal convert couldn't have conceived they would be around some 20 years later, carrying on in much the same fashion. Despite a long history of tragedies and personnel upheavals, the California quartet's eighth album is mostly business as usual--and business, as usual, is quite good. The title track, "By the Way," is a powerful, bruised piece of slap-bass and intermediary white-boy rapping. "Universally Speaking" pays sweaty, soulful tribute to singer Anthony Kiedis's hometown of Detroit. And "Lemon Trees on Mercury" sounds eerily like it could have been lifted from 1984's Freaky Styley. The band's reliable eclectic side, meanwhile, surfaces on the Latin-flavored "Cabron" and moody "Venice Queen." I thought the Peppers would recover from Californication but it just got worst. Sorry, this cd SUX! I didn't know Lawrence Welk was still alive until I heard this trash. I guess the socks are soo long ago.

Say what you want, the Peppers have kicked out way better albums than this one, I'll make a quick ratings list for ya, from best to worst.

1. Californication
2. Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik
3. Stadium Arcadium (very close to BSSM, though)
4. Uplift Mofo Party Plan
5. Mother's Milk
6. Freaky Styley
7. BY THE WAY (yea, that's right)
8. The other albums are not worth mentioning.

I simply wasn't impressed. Maybe I got a little spoiled from Californication, but bottom line is that all these other albums had some ballads, alotta funk, and some hard rock. This album is missing a couple key ingredients from RHCP. They simply aren't hard enough, and should have a warning label in that regard.

all that said, i'll note some songs that were good.

-By the Way. Way to go Flea! You made this song what it is.
-Dosed.
-Zephyr Song. You can feel it, lyrically and spiritually.
-Can't Stop. Good jams.
-On Mercury. There's those old roots showing again.

For most bands today, this would be a breakout album. Not for Red Hot, though. For the Peppers, this is sub-par.

By The Way, This Is Amazing.......2007-02-15

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are unquestionably the greatest band that has ever lived. Evolving in a storybook-like fashion from having sold roughly 25,000 copies of their debut album, to the 13 million Californication accumulated. The band has experienced countless line-up change, heartbreaks, and tragic upheavals, giving the foursome a bleak future. 20 years ago, not a single person could have foretold this. By the Way came at a time when music begged for originality and uniqueness. It is lush, poignant, and immaculate; By the Way evokes fascination in all, as to what the band has transformed into.

It begins with "By the Way", one of the only numbers on the entire album which have preserved the once quintessential funk and rap-driven verses. It is vastly discrepant to those of the other recordings found on the album, and is, thus, misleading. The intricate song structure evolves from mellow, harmonious and humble beginnings to a brazen verse and impeccably bridges into a melodic chorus. "Universally Speaking" follows. It's instantly apparent that this song has very few things relative to that of it's predecessor. The song has a sort of Doo-whop feeling as it bridges expressively from the verse into a 60's-type chorus.

"This Is the Place" has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. It begins with a modest base line (which is played throughout the entire song), and gives way to Chad's lustrous drum beat and Anthony's masterful lyrics; it contains some of the best song-writing I have ever seen, though one never knows what he is actually alluding to. John comes in with a seemingly invisible guitar segment; all until the chorus, when it brings through stunning life altering sounds. The most notable segment is the conclusion, when Kiedis sing unwaveringly, and John pounds furiously on his guitar. "Dosed" follows, which is elegant, wispy, and, for some reason, makes me feel as if I were in an Arctic blast. Four guitar lines run luxuriantly through the song.

"Don't Forget Me" has the most intricate and zealous guitar-playing I have ever heard. Like "This Is the Place", the exact same base-line is played perpetually until the conclusion. Anthony's haunting and ubiquitous voice resonates in your mind, as John picks masterfully at his guitar. Following the first and second choruses, astonishingly intricate solos are given by Frusciante. Each one is an ecstasy of euphoric delirium, executed with impeccable perfection. "The Zephyr Song" comes next, and seems as though it were lifted directly out of the 70's. It's psychedelic nature stands out wondrously.

"Can't Stop" is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. It starts fast paced, but somewhat quiet, until it reaches the climax. An amazing bridge to the verse is played by John. The verse is far better than the chorus, as Frusciante provides majestic backing vocals. Amazing song. "I Could Die for You", the shortest song on the album, is hard to describe. It's elegant and beautiful and gentle in it's nature. The track is quiet, yet perky and alive, as though driven by an enveloping, fervent, fanatical force. "Midnight" is another gem. The sounds which it engages have rarely been seen elsewhere. It is so unique, as each one of the songs are. Melodic and lush, bare and unsparing. "Throw Away Your Television" is the funkiest number on the album, though certain sections imply an innovative sense, and as though one were experiencing a whirlwind of nuance and jet speed illustriousness.

"Cabron" is an experimental track, which has a tang of Latin influences, hence the name, and is played exclusively on an acoustic guitar. It is another vastly dissimilar song which contradicts much of its colleagues. "Tear", a striking and lethargic (and long) song is an unexpected tribute to the Beach Boys. A magical trumpet solo is performed by Flea, which allows the song to prevent itself from becoming lost on the record. "On Mercury" is, if there had to be one, the weakest track on the entire album. The faux ska sound simply sparks too much turmoil between the songs it surrounds, and does not fit in with the grand message which By the Way is attempting to articulate.

It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: "Minor Thing", which shows, blatantly, how much Kiedis has evolved as both a lyricist and a singer. His compelling and spellbinding voice gives way to the enchanting, enthralling and captivating guitar playing given by John. "Warm Tape" is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track the Chili Peppers have ever produced. The sound is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created.

The final and longest song on By the Way, "Venice Queen", may be the most meaningful. It's mellow and windy intro gives one the sense of walking in a forest, while the bitter cold wind attacks you from all angles. It defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Anthony comes in perfectly and begins singing in a depressed and crestfallen manner. Until, however, the song completely turns around and kicks itself into high gear. Near the halfway mark, it turns from a glum ballad to a driven acoustic melody, alluding to the death of Gloria Scott, a woman who aided Anthony in the fight against drugs. John provides majestic backing vocals, to make this song an amazing stand out.

So, if you took the time to read why By the Way is the best album ever recorded, you'll purchase it. Carefree.

Californication Part II.......2007-02-14

RHCP is appealing to younger audiences like myself (I'm 20) and I fell in love with this band when Californication came out. Their previous albums didn't appeal to me (the alternative bad boy image). The lyrics are beautiful as well as Anthony's voice though I think he left the bad boy in Californication. Anyway a friend of mine told me the album was lame (but he's a hardcore AFI fan)after hearing it through once I was like wow it goes up and down. My picks: "Can't Stop" "Don't Forget Me" "Venice Queen" and "Minor Thing."
