However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

Few would claim that Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett is the world's greatest rock vocalist, but he clearly means what he sings. On Diesel and Dust, Garrett and company serve up a collection of solid pop-rock songs that follow the groundwork laid by their early albums. Intrinsic to their sound is a guitars-bass-drums attack spiced occasionally with horns and keyboards and capped with Garrett's throaty vocals. Garrett's lyrics on Deisel and Dust are noteworthy because they are not about love or personal relationships but instead address larger issues. "Beds Are Burning" is a call to return the land expropriated from Australia's aboriginal peoples, while "The Dead Heart" and "Bullroarer" celebrate their rich cultural heritage. Many bands and artists have made some sort of political or social concern apparent in their work, but few have done so as consistently, dedicatedly, and tunefully as Midnight Oil. --Al MassaCustomer Reviews:
Greatest Album by greatest band of all time.......2007-05-11
If you fall in love with the album, as I did, you can move onto some of their older stuff - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, or Red Sails in the Sunset are similarly incredible, and even more creative.
The Oils are truly a special band, and 6 years after their breakup, I still pop in my mix CD's in the car when my kids aren't around. I'll never understand why they didn't become as popular as, say, U2 or REM - they are all that and more. But I suppose it makes it that much more amazing for the die hard fans that still rave about the Oils to this day.

A record that transcends music.......2007-03-21
The record, despite its serious themes, is life affirming, as the defiantly rocking closer "Sometimes" appropriately underscores. Midnight Oil believes in the redemptive power of the human spirit in spite of the injustice and inequities in our world today.
From a musical standpoint, each song is flawlessly crafted and produced. Warne Livesey does an oustanding job of integrating the sounds of the earth and of the band, with the sounds of electronic beats and synthesizers. This is a modern rock record to be sure, in spite of its folksy songs and socially conscious subject matter. This record and "10,9,8..." were Midnight Oil's finest hours. However, this record has a power all its own, as any time we see hardship, suffering and inequality in this world, all we in the west need to do is listen to this record to understand how it tastes, smells and feels to be in that condition. A remarkable record. One for the ages. Get it if you don't have it.

I just noticed that I reviewed this album years ago, as "A music fan" [October 23, 1999]. Since I've listened to this album again in the meantime, I thought I'd try and do a more informative job this time!].
As per my original review, I have to say that it is an open question of whether this album is the Oils best, or "10-1" takes the honour.
Initially, my reaction was that the album had a killer opening three tracks. On relistening to it, it gets better, as some songs grow on you even more.
Here are my favourite tracks:
Beds are burning: pop/rock classic, melodic and clangy at the same time.
Put down that weapon: sort of in the same vein as "10-1"'s "Short memory". The track is a slow pop song that has a brilliant change of pace...a delicious bass riff veers into hyper, clangy rock, and then returns to a slow send off. Terrific stuff.
Dreamworld: one fan told me that the lead singer was a big fan of The Beach Boys. I'd always considered this song as a Beach Boys style song. It's my favourite song from the album, probably. Not the best intro, but once the harmonies and melodies kick in, it's a terrific pop song.
The dead heart: this is a real sing-a-long pop song. You should find the "do do do do do do"'s really catchy.
Sell my soul: this is the song that has REALLY grown on me-a lost Oils classic, a la "Sleep". I love the attention grabbing, funky opening "I am ready. Let's begin". Again, the song has strong melody, as is usual for quality Oils songs.
Sometimes: probably the best of the rest.
In my mind, I always think of this album as in the same vein as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Californication" album. Both albums are immensely strong. This Oils album has really only song which I don't rate that highly, but I can't remember which it is! Californication is like that too, but this Oil's album has stronger songs, and more of them.
Same goes when comparing the Oils "10-1" album with the Chilli Peppers' "Blood sugar sex magik". "10-1" is great because of the four songs on it which form the foundation of the Oils' greatest songs ever. BSSM by the RHCP is also a very good album due to the presence of four songs, but again, I think the Oil's album has the stronger four songs.

And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke!
Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal.
Another fantastic song on the album is "put down that weapon". Musically as impressive as the former one, it impresses also with the passion Garret has to deliver his peaceful message.
There is no weak track on this album. I mean, try any of them alone, and you will have something between "positively inspired" and "awesome".
Every track has got this sense of rough urgency that is the trademark of the group. In the same time the whole is perfectly produced and played.
Just my opinion, in the "ranking game" : Now that I know most of their albums, I would give 5 stars for 3 of them :

There's a lot to be said for continuity and high concept, and Coheed and Cambria have invented an elaborate geeky parallel sci-fi world that spread over four CDs. If you follow the story line, it unfolds like some punk Harry Potter series; equally ambitious and didactic and almost as tightly written as the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed." You can also listen to each of the albums without a thought about the story and marvel at the musicianship, the intricately layered guitars, Claudio Sanchez's overwrought and rather pinched vocals and the sheer imagination displayed by these four musicians whose idiosyncratic emo seamlessly flows into prog rock. Were this album really succeds is in it's great stroyline. The artwork of the album as well as the music relays a sense of epic-ness. You truly will not understand the depth of this Cd until you've heard it first-hand. Buy this CD I could not have been more pleased. In the great words of Apollo I and II, tonight the night on Burning Star IV...

a modern experience I'll never forget.......2007-07-09
I characterize this album more as heavy metal or progressive metal, even a litle bit of alt rock, but it stays a little apart from prog, even when it has certain characteristics of the genre.
The composition of each track is simple superb, delicate, heavy and well thought. Lisetn well, EVERY track is incredible and outstanding, one of the few album you don't have to skip any track; Welcome Home, Ten Speed (Of God Blood And Burial), the four fragments of The Willing Well (specially part 4), The Suffering and Wake Up are extremelly potent tracks that show every characteristic of the album, including soft ballads (until half of the album I never imagined a soft track), rythmical and confortable tracks like The Suffering, heavy, potential tracks with escapist sounds like Welcome Home and Ten Speed, the most likely prog songs like the fragments of The Willnig Well, and so on, each track is different from the other one. The moods of the CD are quite difficult to identify; I quite agree with those reviewers who characterize this album mainly EMO, and though it has many characteristics of EMO (wich I still do not think is a defined or even real genre) it also assimilates alt rock, prog, heavy metal, and so on; within the moods the songs are very different among each other but I can say their moods are agressive, hard, soft, constantly changing, experimental and a certain level of complexity.
Among the artists the guitar of Travis Stever is the best feature in the album, he's such a talented guitarrist, Claudio Sanchez vocals are very melodic and nice to hear but it isn't a voice such talented and trained but stunning as well, Josh Eppard drums are one of those instruments that in every song you listen to them carefully, and Michael Todd bass can be heard, you don't know how it bothers me not to be able to hear a bass in a song, but he makes it sound incredible.
Viewed as a concept album, its a little weird and even a little dumb as a concept album, I trully know that they are trying to make five albums about Teh Amory Wars but it's obvious that Coheed And Cambria would have a lot more credit and much better critics if it weren't for this detail.
In conclussion this band demonstrate among a world full of pitiful new music how still it can be excellent compositions written, if they only take their time, any musician can bring back the flame of music, good music, and the CD is a masterpiece, my sincere recommendations to everyone who appreciates good music.

The reviewer below is more interested in the album art, if thats your concern stick with cereal boxes or bazooka joe wrappers, this is rock n' roll. He also claims "sub par musicianship", which is an amazingly naive statement by someone who must know little about that which they speak. Grab a guitar and write tunes anywhere near this level. Sub par my a**. These guys are at the top of their game.
Disappointing from an outsider's perspective........2007-04-25
I am also a fan of new punk rock. Taking Back Sunday's "Tell All Your Friends" is an anthemic album that tugs at many strings, notably angst and self-conscious outcast. Thursday's "War All the Time" is a prime example of a relatively simple subset of music (emo/punk) reaching beyond its comfort zone into more controversial territory. Still organic, still cohesive.
"Cohesive", ironically enough, is not a word I'd use to describe Coheed and Cambria's "Good Apollo" album. It fails in both respects: it does not unify its theme (complex story) with its content (music & artwork) and the overall musicianship is subpar. Though I am not familiar with their previous albums (and therefore not familiar with the story that precedes it) I will strictly deal with this album as it stands alone.
At first glance, the album's song titles ("Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)", "Apollo I: The Writing Writer", "The Willing Well I: Fuel for the Feeding End") suggest an intricately woven story that will not easily reveal itself to the listener. A more negative viewpoint would say that the track titles are deliberately complicated; they are strange for the sake of strangeness. The artwork is dark, sinister and also suggests that the music will sound gothic or at least morose.
Convoluted story? Yes. Gothic, intricate music? No. What we have is the following:
A piano, string-quartet intro to start off the album. It begins with "Keeping the Blade", an instrumental piece that starts with a single ominous note, and gradually builds up to a full 4-string ensemble with a piano hinting at an eerie buildup. "Always & Never" is a warm acoustic piece that hints at singer/songwriter Claudio Sanchez' harmonized and pained vocals. Nothing heavy or intricate. "Welcome Home" takes this same acoustic guitar and adds a metal crunch to it. The song is 6 minutes of pinched vocals, squealing guitars, and epic strings.
This is as close as the album gets to its artwork and song title complexity. From there, you have simple guitar rock, campy "punk" songs, devoid of any real complexity. Songs that attempt to mimic odd time signatures ("Mother May I") end up sounding empty and poorly thought-out. Others, such as the insufferable mouthful "The Willing Well II: Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" are too flimsy to merit a 7-minute duration.
All in all, it is a lump of coal in a silver box. Attempting to say that Coheed and Cambria are bridging the gap between punk rock and progressive rock is almost insulting. The artwork and thematic construction of the album suggests that the songs will come together to create a progressive masterpiece. But (and I should have thought of this before buying it) it's an album written by an emo band. Though I don't want to discredit Sanchez' imagination, the music does not fit the rest of the album. He needs to up his songwriting to compete with the intricacies of his album's conceptual designs or tone the art in his future albums down to more accurately reflect the music within.
This is not a progressive masterpiece - it's a subpar emo album with a flashy exterior and one good song.

In order to be able to release several albums a year, Elvis' management had started packaging his new singles with some of his old songs that had not been released on an album. While it may have been a way to make a fast buck, Elvis' new material deserved better and should have been packaged with other new songs and treated as a major release, rather than a budget release. While the song Burning Love went all the way to number 2 on the Billboard singles chart and number 1 on the rival Cashbox chart, the album only managed to climb to 22 on the album chart. Elvis had enough new material at the time to put out a high-quality new album that probably would have done much better on the chart. As it was, they pretty much wasted his biggest hit of the 1970s by putting it on an album with a bunch of dated material.

It's a ballsy move to claim you're reinventing a musical genre that has been slogging along quite happily for more than two decades, but the Refused back up their chutzpah with an absolutely awe-inspiring and fearless slab of musical mayhem. The Shape of Punk to Come is nothing short of a punk-rock manifesto. Hardcore pathos is merely the foundation for their architecture: upon that they build an edifice of political expression with a take-no-prisoners approach to the search for artistic meaning and a musical liberation that includes elements of speedcore, free jazz, electronica, lo-fi, and absolutely no pop. Politics, art, and music merge into one monolithic whole. The disc starts with the spoken epigraph, "They told me that the classics never go out of style, but they do, they do," followed by a swirling mess of noise that finally jells into the last undiscovered thunderous riff of "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull." The song stutters, then speeds along, skips, pauses, then rolls. They follow that with the groovy Gang of Four metronomic punch of "Liberation Frequency." When vocalist Dennis sings, "We want the airwaves back" in a sweet falsetto that belies his ability to deliver a screech not unlike a bull alligator clearing its throat, you believe this band isn't going to gently rise up the Billboard charts; they'd rather storm the ramparts. Unfortunately, when the band writes a song called "The Refused Are Fuckin' Dead," they aren't kidding around: the band broke up before the release of Shape. That being said, I am impressed. The album title is 100% apt, and it's rare for this to happen in punk. While many artists may sing about anti-conformity, several of the bands in the ilk sound similar, and then adding a guitar solo will sometimes be used to make the songs actually stand out. But Refused are a totally different kind of breed. They are kind of like Fugazi, they are punk rockers but they've got all the integrity and creativity that's beyond what some may predict it to be.
Out of all 12 of these songs, not one of these is weak. The awesome electronic instrumental "Brutist Pome #5" is even a highlight on here. The tracks flow in amazingly well and the whole thing was well-written. There is mostly yelling on the album, however, this is not too much of a bad thing, as Dennis also speaks and at times actually will sing, like on the excellent "Summerholidays vs. Punkroutine," a track about the idea of maybe going big. It contains the album's greatest line: "rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in," which in itself should've been seen as a kind of anthem.
Things kick off with speaking, and while it says how classics go out of style, I don't think this will ever be "out of style" for the underground. The lyrics on that track, "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull," are clearly anti-capitalist, and even though I am not really the most politically-minded, the lyrics are intellegent and that's what drives me to it. NOFX are boring compared to these guys, even if these guys aren't as humorous or anything. At the end of the track there is a "radio station" coming in with this "futuristic" electronic music in the background. That fades out and then you get into "Liberation Frequency," a track that is addictive on here. And throughout, there are ohter interesting moments, like the awesome rhythm section highlighted on the jazzy "Deadly Rhythm," the marching drums of "Protest Song '69," and better yet, the killer riff and memorable tune of my personal favorite, "Refused Are F***ing Dead." Later in the album there's even a bit of orchestral instruments, which is interesting to hear in this sort of album. It is musically interesting, and I wonder what took me so long to get this.
This chimerical bombination is something I confidentally call a favorite of mine, even though I haven't even owned it that long. It inspired me recently to buy "The EP Compilation" which I saw at a store (!) and I loved that one, too. I may even try out some (International) Noise Conspiracy. This is an album in which the greatness is the least questionable thing.
Better With Age.......2006-10-26
I bought this album when it was released, I was a bit hesitant... I was not a huge fan of the hardcore scene at the time (Earth Crisis, Strife). This album, was like a revelation.
So many people deride it claiming that better music is made today: I don't agree with that, but some people don't like Fugazi either.
Radical politics aside, the album takes many ideas of the 60s protest movement and pushed the limits of hardcore (at the time). Incorporating electronic beats, varied time signatures (jazz interludes, even), and technical guitar work to create something new. It really was new eight years ago, this band touched off thousands of imitators. It is sort of a Sandinsta/London Calling for a new generation Granted, there were other great hardcore bands (Snapcase and Converge come to mind), but Refused not only created a truly brilliant album, but they broke up and went on. Reminds me of ideas Legs McNeil talks about in "Please Kill Me" (mainly the notion that all the good bands break up at their peak). Real punk is futile and angry and basically Refused embodied it better than many of their imitators.
In or out of the context of history, the format of the album closely mirrors several 60s era jazz albums and the Nation of Ulysees political chanting is pretty consistent with the Dischord/DC style of hardcore: politics over prancing. This is something that is sorely lacking in the current generation of bands (eyeliner!). Denis Lyxzen continued that same meme in The International Noise Conspiracy (which eschewed technicality for garage rock ala the Stooges).
This is one of those albums that you really have to listen to and focus on the music (headphones).
In the same way that Jawbreaker touched off the hordes of psuedo-poppy screamers, you can hear the echos of The Shape of Punk to Come in everyone from DEP to Thursday. If you don't have this album, you should.
A Lesson in Punk...........2006-09-03
I think The Shape of Punk to come is one of the most creative albums I've ever heard. This is punk done perfect. Catchy lyrics, rife with what you would probably expect from a punk band. Its unfortuante that these guys broke up shortly after this album, because I would love to have heard what they might have come with next. Even tho the lead singer went onto the band, International Noise Conspiracy, while good, they don't match the intensity or have quite the same magic that made Refused so special. If your a fan of punk music, go get this now if you don't already have it. Its that good.

With a delicate trill that occasionally recalls Iris DeMent's, the former singer for the Reeltime Travelers (who appeared on the Cold Mountain soundtrack and tour) teams with producer/multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell for an impressive solo debut. With stellar support from musicians including father and daughter Levon and Amy Helm (from the Band and Ollabelle, respectively), Martha Scanlan delivers songs that combine deep roots, striking imagery, and spiritual transcendence. With its electric-guitar propulsion, her call-and-response rendition of James Cleveland's "Get Right Church" evokes the Staple Singers, while steel guitar and piano frame the classic country balladry of "I Don't Even Have to Ask." Her breathy understated reading renews Bob Dylan's "Went to See the Gypsy," with the bluesy "Walkin'" suggesting another dimension to her musical range. The musicianship heard here is rarely felt or heard today.

The Combination of "Stacked Deck" and "Too Stuffed to Jump" may overwhelm some people into thinking they have all of the classic ARA music if they own that CD. This is understandable because those two albums are incredible and have both of ARA's biggest hits: "Third Rate Romace" and "Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)," but "Toucan Do It Too" combined with "Burning The Ballroom Down" is just as loaded with quality songs and performances.
My all-time favorite ARA song is "Burning The Ballroom Down" because of the music and, to me more importantly, from the stream of emotions that come from the singer's perspective. Russell Smith nails this song all the way from smugness ("I know why you're here by the look in your eye") at the beginning to near-desperation ("It might have to last me forever if I don't see you again") at the end. "Never Been To The Islands" kicks things off with a laid-back style that's easy on the ears, quickly followed by Smith's soulful rendition of "Never Been Hurt" for an excellent contrast.
Again, the musical styles vary across a wide spectrum with the music fitting the lrics and they are all good. The group that was too rock for country, too country for rock and just too eclectic for anywhere else was before its time, but it's given us some great songs.
Pick this up along with another great two-album ARA CD, "Stacked Deck/Too Stuffed To Jump" and their later, self-titled CD.
If you've never heard the Amazing Rhythm Aces, how do you know if you will like them? Do you like surprisingly thoughtful and often clever lyrics? Do you like excellent musicianship? Do you enjoy being exposed to different sounding songs on the same CD? You could do a whole lot worse than this CD and it would be hard to do much better.

I would also suggest The Congos "Heart of the Congos" as another must-have roots album. One of producer Lee "Scratch" Perry's finest works.
A Unique Classic.......2005-02-03
The difference with Burning Spear (Winston Rodney and his back-up singers, Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds) was that the strength of his music was never with singles. A Burning Spear song by itself didn't mean as much until you put it in a group of Burning Spear songs. It was with albums that Spear would gain his popularity and here was his first big breakthrough. It was a huge success in Jamaica and afterwords, Spear was signed up with Island Records until he gradually reached international fame.
This album may not be for everyone. The music is jerky and old sounding. The tracks are short and often repetitive. But there's something ethereally timeless about this set. The music seems to transcend space and time to make us beleive that it's always been there. As if Winston Rodney brought it with him from his premortal existance to be shared with the world in our present day. Perhaps I was going through a transitional period in my life when I first heard it, but anything Rodney ever did afterword (even if it was just as good or better) would never feel like this. It is truly a unique masterpiece.
P.S. The accompanying band, "The Black Desciples" also deserves mention in helping Burning Spear accomplish this unequaled acheivement.

Burning for Buddy: What a testament!.......2007-03-03
It takes quite the musician to not only play Jazz, but play good Jazz. Not only play good Jazz, but play good Jazz well. Buddy Rich was the consummate musician. Drummer's loved him, horn players loved him, singer's loved him, everyone loved him. This tribute album is a testament to the impact he has had on music and humanity. All of the drummers involved did an amazing job. The entire Band [from what I understand all but 2 members are Buddy's original band members] did an amazing job.
Every song is great and provides a wonderful listen both to the musician and casual music lover alike. God bless Neil Peart and everyone involved for putting this together. I love it!

I don't know of any 2-CD set that will give you a more diverse sampling of who's who in both jazz and rock drumming. Most other samplers are of either rock or jazz drummers, and seldom is there any overlap. One thing you find, especially if you read the interviews, is that many rock drummers have been aware of jazz drumming, and of Buddy Rich in particular. His appeal transcends genre when drummers have been open-minded enough to look past the fact that he came from jazz.
For the rock fan unaware of big-band jazz, or who thought it was only nostalgic "wrinkle music," this album, put together by Rush drummer Neal Peart, will have to be a surprise. Granted, the kind of "edge" in the music of a dozen or so horns is different from the "edge" of loud electronic effects; but there is definitely all the edge you could want in the Buddy Rich band. Nor do the arrangements sound archaic or out of date.
The jazz lover who thought there was little real talent among rock drummers will be pleasantly surprised and enlightened also. Many of the arrangements in the Rich book were pretty demanding, but none of the rock drummers on this tribute seem to struggle at all. Some even show some real chops, and all are enjoyable to hear.
Now for the Buddy Rich fan. Of these, there is more than one kind. There are those who, while they love Rich's work, also love that of a number of other great drummers; and there are those who simply think no one can touch him in any aspect of drumming. It really depends what you look for in big-band drumming. Some truly great drummers do best with a smaller group or with a more sedate type of band. They simply do not provide the DRIVE that a hot jazz big band needs.
In this one aspect of drumming at least, Rich was without peer. Anyone who doubts this should take this two-volume set, and find the originals of the same tunes done by the band with Rich himself on drums. Play the cut (for example, "Dancing Man") from this tribute CD, then play the orginal with Rich on drums. Do this with each of the cuts on both, and see which you find more exciting to listen to.
Notice the little ways Rich adds to and embellishes what the band is doing. While most of the tribute drummers are very good, you hear things like where a tribute drummer may do a couple of rimshots for a signal kick, Rich will do a crisp, quick little roll INTO a rimshot. Either is acceptable, but the things Rich does are often less cliched and more technically demanding.
The Rich fanatic will find himself reassured that no one threatens Buddy's place in the pantheon. But the open-minded listener will also be introduced to some fine drumming talent he may not have been aware of, from both jazz and rock. The CD is a must, not only for drummers, but for anyone who enjoys good drumming and/or good contemporary big-band music.
