Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is a powerful piece, packed with emotional intensity yet also extraordinarily listenable--and popular. Here, Barber's short masterwork of simplicity and resonance gets eight treatments, from those he approved of (Charles Munch and the strings of the Boston Symphony; the Tokyo String Quartet; organist David Pizarro; and the Smithsonian Chamber Players) to new interpretations that don't quite match with the older renditions.

James Galway's new flute-and-synthesizer reading is a bit anemic, though thankfully not showy, and the Canadian Brass's arrangement is likewise tempered and calm, even if not very close to having significant bite. Richard Stoltzman and the Kalman Clarinet Choir probably do the best job of taking Barber to new places; the woody tones mesh almost polyphonically. Also included is the Choir of Trinity College's reading of Agnus Dei, Barber's choral setting of the Adagio, a distillation that might well be the high point of the CD. For the most stunning rendition of the Adagio, however, listeners should really hear the Thomas Schippers version. --Andrew Bartlett

If there is a single composition by which American composer Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) is universally known, it is the Adagio for Strings, arranged, at Toscanini's request, in 1938, two years after it was originally written as the slow movement of Barber's only String Quartet Op. 11. Here are no less than five "authorized" versions by Barber himself -- the original, for Quartet; the Adagio, for String Orchestra; the version for Organ; the version for Chamber Orchestra; and Agnus Dei, a 1967 setting of the last part of the Latin Mass for a cappella choir to the music of the Adagio -- as well as three other arrangements, for Clarinet choir, for Brass choir and for Flute and Synthesizer. Eminently satisfying and one only wishes there were notes to explain which version (aside from the Quartet movment, 1936; the Adagio, 1938; and the Agnus Dei, 1967) came just when. Charles Munch and the Strings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra give a classic performance of the Adagio in its most familiar form while the Tokyo String Quartet unveils the seldom-heard original version that was responsible for all the rest.

In a little under three years' time (March 9, 2010) we will be celebrating the centennial of Barber's birth and, since March 1999, Naxos has been recording the music of this pre-eminent American composer. So far, all the orchestral works (including works for soloist and orchestra, works orchestrated from another medium, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and the chamber opera A Hand of Bridge), the published works for piano, choral works, and the opera Vanessa have been committed to disc. Chamber works, songs, works for band, other keyboard works etc. are hopefully soon to follow. Although this disc, featuring the Adagio in its varied forms, is not part of this collection, hopefully hearing it will encourage those unfamiliar with Barber to explore more of his music.

If you only listen to one classical song in your life hark Adagio for Strings.

5 out of 5 stars I'll have a number 4 when you bury me, please!.......2006-04-08

LOVE this music. It moves me. Plucks strings I did not know ran through my soul. Makes me feel the sadness of loss but keeps alive the hope of new doors to be opened, more life to experience.
We buried my Uncle, a fine kind-hearted man this Wednesday, they played the ubitquitous "Amazing Grace" when had they asked me, I would have had them hear this and pull them from the path they know so well. Open their eyes and spirit. Feel all the emotions of that day. Buy this for the quiet time when you need to think not what to do, but who you are and whence come.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST.......2005-09-07

This is the very same "song" done about ten diffent ways, and every one of them is fantastic. If you like ANYTHING about classical music, you should buy this CD.

How beautiful this is! I recently purchased this item, and how PLEASED I am with it! The Boston Symphony Orchestra's version is truly inspiring and so utterly well-done! The flute and synthetzer (oh rats how DO you spell that?) is wonderful! So original. I am very, very pleased. If you love Samuel Barber's adagio for strings, you have to own this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Your "Better off dead" without this comp........2005-09-22

For music fans in the Boston area, this CD is a godsend. It features hard to find local classics such as "They saved Hitler's brain" by Unnatural Axe, "Lonely Hearts" by The Atlantics, "I want to help you Ann" by The Lyres and "Better off dead" by LaPeste. The Neats "6" is very interesting because of the swirling organ and numbers theme. Some of these tracks have been re-recorded by major labels. "When things go wrong" by Robin Lane & the Chartbusters was originally issued on Deli Platters Records and was a better mix than the Warner issued track here. For "Loretta" by Nervous Eaters and the Atlantics track, they used the original single versions. The only dud is the Cars demo. Get this now before it dissapears.

5 out of 5 stars Boston Sound Suits West Coast Fan.......2002-06-08

Although I first heard Robin Lane's "When Things Go Wrong" in Indiana of all places, I really became a fan of a number Boston punk/new wave bands when I was living in California. Our local college station had the good taste to play The Lyres, Del Fuegos, and Mission of Burma in heavy rotation. This CD picks some really choice selections from these bands. The Thrills and Atlantics both contributed unexpected gems to this CD too.

In addition, the incredible, hypnotic, organ driven tune "6" by The Neats is probably one of my all time favorite psychodelic tracks from the 80's. Without the aid the of any illegal substances, this song can project you into other worldly state of mind.

While a couple of Boston reviewers were obviously taken with this collection, I want to assure the perspective buyer that this music transcends mere regional interest. Since there are quite a few indispensable songs on this album, you can't afford to miss owning a copy.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best compiliations of Boston punk ever..........2002-04-26

Having lived in Boston during this era, and having seen a load of these bands live, I have to congratulate Rhino on putting together a pretty good slice of the important Boston bands of the 80's. The majorityof the tracks have a lot of staying power ("When Things Go Wrong", "Mass Ave",etc.) and some are just fun to rock out to ("Loretta", "I Want To Help You Ann").

It always surprised me that so few of these bands got national exposure or recording contracts. (The oddest picks of the lot were the Cars, considering they rarely played the clubs). The disc is missing some good bands as well - the Atlantics, the Sex Execs and the Rings spring to mind - but all in all, a good sampling of what was at the time one of the hottest music scenes in the country.

Slap it into the player, kick back, and dream of a time 20 years ago when bands really had talent and weren't backed by huge corporations...

4 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect.......2001-11-02

In that period shortly after the Rat closed, but before the Channel opened its doors to "new" music, the Paradise was THE showcase spot for Boston's local talent. This collection captures most of the up-and-comers from that golden era. For the most part, it reflects the WBCN local band playlist from those years. The Eaters' "All Except You" was arguabley a bigger local hit than "Loretta". Nevertheless, there are some bigger problems with this collection. Most notable among the MIAs is the Fools' "Night For Beautiful Girls". LaPeste is here, but not Pastiche's "Talk, Talk". The Atlantics are present, but there's not even a hint of Private Lightning's "Physical Speed" (equally pop-ish). But, the most glaring omission (to my ears, at least) is anything by the Rings...and, there was a lot of radio-friendly material to choose from (e.g., Let Me Go, I Need Strange, My Kinda Girl, etc.). But, apart from those complaints, isn't it great to have Mission of Burma back in a digital format? Well, yes it is! Buy this and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Radiant.......2004-01-23

This is a beautiful work. This very skilled choir has exceptional tone, and the director knows how to get the best out of his singers in each piece. Franz Biebl's Ave Maria was written for men's choir, but the SATB version here outshines them all. Lauriden's O Magnum Mysterium shimmers as its complex harmonies weave among the parts. You will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Orgasmic.......2001-08-23

What can I say. I have actually sung almost all of these anthems but just listening to them brings about such peace and tranquillity that I thought I had died and gone to heaven..a truly orgasmic experience.

5 out of 5 stars Music to enrapture.......2000-05-08

I bought this for the recording of Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium"; as a singer I have performed this along with other pieces on the CD. I was impressed by all of it. The choir has wonderful dynamic control and great expression. And yes, the Lauridsen moved me to tears as it always does when I sing it. This CD is a must for any lover of beautiful modern choral music

5 out of 5 stars a glorious listening experience!.......2000-04-06

"...sixty-five auditioned volunteers and seven professional singers..."--that's how the CD booklet describes the make-up of Trinity Church-Boston's choir. It's clear from even the most superficial listening that this choir has been able to attract truly talented volunteers. But bringing a mostly volunteer choir to the level of musical attainment evident on this CD requires a director with a number of extraordinary skills: creating a rehearsal ambience with the right mix of challenges and rewards, immense musical sensitivity, intimate knowledge of the human voice's problems and potential, to say nothing of well-honed people skills and great patience. Brian Jones, Trinity Choir's director, obviously has these skills in abundance, and the results are evident on this CD. Perhaps the foremost of all this CD's sterling qualities is the musicality of ensemble--not merely being in perfect sync, but sensing as a corporate entity the subtle gestures, the rise and fall, the ebb and flow of the music. This is choral music at it's most satisfying. The recorded works are all wonderful--but I do believe that Trinity Church Choir and Brian Jones could send us into raptures with a performance of "Mary had a little lamb!"

5 out of 5 stars Worthy buying if you love sacred choral music!.......2000-03-02

A most enjoyable CD. There's nothing atonal here but a diverse and interesting choice of mainstream modern anthems, performing with loving attention to details of diction, tuning, phrasing and expression. Patrick Gowers' 'Viri Galilaei' is a particular tour de force, with impressive sustained increase in tension up to the joyful chorale section, and a beautifully controlled final Alleluia. The polychoral contrasts in Randall Thompson's unaccompanied 'Have ye not known' are also very effective. But there are lots of goodies in this CD. A worthy addition to the library of any lover of sacred choral music. But why is it not available in UK?

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better!.......2004-06-21

I have loved the Del Fuegos ever since I 1st heard I Still Want You. They were unbelievable 'live' and it's a crying shame that they split up. Dan Zanes is doing some great stuff right now with 'family' oriiented music (listen to Night Time) and Warren Zanes has an album out called Memory Girls which is sensational. But this was the album for me. It has all the raw energy that all the best and essential rock and roll records have and there isn't a bad song. If anyone out there has even a mild curiosity about these guys then I recommend to them 100% this album. The other Fuegos albums are great especially The Longest Day & Smoking In The Fields but this is THE one to have. Check out I Still Want You, Shame and Don't Run Wild. Classics. Anyone for a petition to get them back together and I mean the Del Fuegos line up from the 1st 3 albums with Warren & Woody on board.
Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional 80s Music.......2004-05-08

This is one kickin' butt band from the 80s when the term "Alternative" was just born. You gotta have this in your stash if you want some good Rock-N-Roll.

4 out of 5 stars Still holds up after all these years.......2003-11-23

This is a fabulous album of garage rock. The Del Fuegos were the Zanes brothers, Don and Warren, along with Woody Glessmann on drums and Tom Lloyd on bass. Released in 1985 this was their first national album, and it still holds up next to the neo-punk of the new millennium. Almost every song of the ten is a keeper. These guys came to my attention via a Miller beer TV ad series that featured about-to-break-out acts in various local music scenes. Anyone else remember that? "Don't Run Wild" is the big hit, but the entire album is great.

5 out of 5 stars Is there anybody else...........2003-04-09

... besides me who is astounded that this disk is not available? Maybe it's because I live in Boston (and did when this album came out, sometime around 1986), but at least two songs on this album were hits that got major airtime here in Boston ("Don't Run Wild" and "I Still Want You"). Anyway, great, landmark album of memorable, rockin' garage-tinged pop. There must be someone else out there who remembers this album? Let's hope it's available soon.

This recording focuses less on the music than on the performers: Andrew Parrott and the Taverner Consort, Choir and Players, which he founded 32 years ago. Under his direction, the group has achieved international acclaim and produced a large discography; this 2-CD set was compiled from its recordings of the 1980s and '90s, supplemented by a few numbers played by the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, also led by Parrott. The selections were clearly chosen to display the group to best advantage: its vocal and instrumental repertoire, technical polish, tonal beauty and balance, style, versatility, and expressiveness. The program has almost too much variety, consisting mostly of excerpts from longer works; indeed, four movements of Bach's D-major Suite are divided between the two discs. However, several concertos appear in their entirety and, in excellent performances, constitute the most substantial, musically rewarding parts of the set: Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto, a Harp Concerto by Handel, a Flute Concerto by Vivaldi and the "Spring" and "Summer" Violin Concertos from his "Four Seasons." Other instrumental highlights include the famous Pachelbel Canon--really a set of increasingly ornate variations on a ground bass--a glorious-sounding Sonata for brass by Gabrieli and several arresting, beautiful pieces by Purcell. Some of the program's "favorites" are better known in a different guise, such as the Sinfonia from a Bach Cantata, which he adapted from the Prelude of his third Partita for unaccompanied violin. The instrumental tuning alternates between normal and low; the reason is not explained, but the difference in timbre and resonance is immediately apparent even if one does not know the work's original key. The choral selections, with and without instruments, are all wonderful. Appropriately, the program begins with the bright opening chorus of Vivaldi's Gloria and closes with the heart-breaking final one of Bach's St. John Passion. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars A warm, joyful baroque Christmas celebration.......2004-12-07

The beautiful, varied, and well-chosen repertoire on this disc will keep you returning to it season after season. We start with a 17th-cantury French NOEL, lovingly and simply rendered a cappella by Richard Duguay. There follow some more French carols in instrumental arrangements by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, two traditional plainchants, some sumptuous madrigal-style pieces by Schein and Monteverdi, Purcell's florid and expressive vocal monologue for the Virgin Mary, and finally the most substantial piece on the disc: Charpentier's Christmas Midnight Mass, a very interesting work based on French carol themes. The performances by the Boston camerata are warm and vibrant. This early baroque Christmas disc is a real winner.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent performance.......2000-09-18

This cd is the Baroque equivalent of the Medieval and Renaissance Christmas albums of the Boston Camerata. It has the least varied repetoire, in part because of the Charpentier Mass - Messe de Minuit sur des Airs de Noel, a work well worth having in its entirety. There are two pieces that are chant and a marvelous piece from Germany in an Italian style - Nun Jauchzet mit Hellem Ton - to which the notes say there are two sets of words, the one recorded here in praise of the Christmas festival, the other celebrating the amorous delights of nymphs. With such a delightful piece of trivia, how could the cd fail?

While the Boston Camerata gives its normal skilled performance, they are not as spectacular as they are on earlier music. They still are among the better interpreters of Baroque music, but it is not their speciality.

This is an excellent Christmas cd worthy of being in any collection.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2003-11-15

I have always loved Jessye Norman since the first time I heard her voice. That occasion occurred when I bought a completely unknown Verdi opera, Il Corsaro, and was delighted with the result. I knew who Caballe was (I had recordings of her singing, and enjoyed them), but Jessye Norman was a complete unknown to me. I was taken back by the rich vibrant spacious voice that I heard. What also interested me was the fact she could do coloratura work, and float a very beautiful high B flat. The voice then was not as fully developed as now, nor was her artistry as deep, but what I heard was simply breathtaking and I was hooked on her as an artist from that time forth.

This disk is simply a sampling of her singing, and it does show her singing a wide variety of things. She is not perfect in everything she sings (and even the Great Maria Callas was not successful in everything she sang, and I doubt any artist is; some works simply are better suited to their voices and their temperments than others), but one cannot fault her interpretations. The voice is always beautiful and well managed.

I perfer Norman in German opera, which is sampled here, and even though I think she sings a great Strauss (the Ariadne) I feel that composer really doesn't give her much. I have a recording of her doing Salome, which I love and she is superb, but Strauss is not the composer for her. Wagner is where she really sings and takes your breath away. Sadly, there is no real representation of his music here.

French opera is another place she really excels. However, nothing of any real worth is represented here.

American music, particularly spirituals, is another field in which she is sublime. Her Christmas Album is incredible. In this area all we have is the Gershwin, which is extremely well sung, but not really to my liking. To me, for some reason, Ethel Mermon should be singing that song.

As for the Baroque music; Norman is actually exceptional in it. Her voice is fabulous and breathes much warmth into music that is often sung in such a cold lifeless way it loses any power to communicate. I happen to love her Dido (I have the complete opera, and I have that opera with many other singers who are equally fine). I do agree with the one writer who stated that her voice is really "too much" for this music. It actually is. If one has heard Norman in real life, she has an incredibly powerful, full voice. It has nobility in it that is well suited to the grandest of the grand. She is an unforgetable Cassandre in Berlioz's opera. In many ways, it is like hearing Brunhilde sing Vivaldi with the voice large enough to wash over a Wagnerian orchestra being accompanied by 10 instruments. However, not matter how loud or strong her singing, the voice always remains warm, caressing, and enveloping (it is never sharp and penetrating like Nilsson cutting into the ear like a spear). Norman never violates the style of the music she sings. She just has a huge voice. Yes, she can sing the most melting pianissimos, and does so, but God gave her a treasure trove (not a simple chest) of virtues and abilities in her voice. Even though I love her voice, and her singing of Dido, the truth is she is too much of a good thing for that role. Now that isn't to say the music is lesser music, not at all for it is truly great music, it is simply the way it is written, the style of the period it comes from, and the emotional content and the way it should be expressed is simply not right for her lush and glorious sound.

With all this said, this is a super recording. The sound is excellent. I would say, Norman did very well with her recording career having Philips be her label. They have served her voice well. One thing I must say, and this is rather general about recordings; Philips has really done well to capture the true quality of this amazing voice. Most companies simply can't capture large voices well, and often we hear their many problems before we can hear their many strengths. Decca for all its wonderful recording technique never captured the real Nilsson, nor the real Sutherland (and definitely not the real Tebaldi), simply because the miking system has the most terrible time capturing large voices without distorting them. EMI was the worst at capturing big sounding voices and keeping them sounding true.

Philips has managed to capture the sound of Norman's voice and to remain fairly true to it. One is not surprised to hear her in performance after hearing one of her recordings. You just feel more "part of it" in a live setting than on the recordings. Nilsson shocked me, for I was completely unprepared for the strength of her penetrating and exciting sound when I hear her live for the first time. It was like the records captured only a shadow of what and who she was.

The fact that the engineers at Philips have captured her sound so well really places this recording (and all the rest of Normon's recordings) on the top of my list for "authentic sound." I recommend this recording as a wonderful introduction to the art of Jessye Norman. She is a complete artist, and like all singers, she has areas where she is super and without rival, and other areas where she is not necessarily our first choice. Yet, no matter what she sings one can never claim she is uninvolved, detached, or careless in her work. She sings with conviction, and she puts her own stamp on everything she sings. She literally makes the music her own.

5 out of 5 stars Jessye is the best!.......2001-08-09

This is an excellent sampling of some of Jessye's great works. She is so clear and vibrant. You will want to listen to this over and over again. I even bought some of the full length recordings of her music that was sampled here.

      5 out of 5 stars A monumental talent.......2000-08-06

Jessye Norman has a landmark voice. It has such warmth, variety of colour, strength and depth that few can surpass her interpretations. The tracks on this CD are a good mixture that show off the best qualities of her voice.

Of course few CDs are perfect and, I'm afraid this is not one of them. Although the Poulenc and Brahms songs are supurbly executed and the Strauss song and aria are similarly noteworthy I must take exception to two of the renditions. Jessye's Dido leaves something to be desired. For me, and those others I have discussed this with, her voice is too rich and uncharacteristic for a touching Baroque aria. I've had the good fortune to play continuo in a live performance of Dido and Aeneas and the Dido in that performance was much colder, though still emotional. For me too Jessye's vibrato is a little too much for the work. Likewise unsatisfactory for me was the Gerschwin. I thought it was a little too much like a vacuum cleaner at points (no offence intended).

However, given the overall stunning quality and effortlessly beautiful singing I felt compelled to give this a 5 star rating, after all there is still over one hour of sublime music and perhaps others will like her renditions of the two tracks I highlighted.

        5 out of 5 stars refreshingly traditional.......2006-11-10

If you are as tired as I am of canned Christmas muzak, you will find this to be refreshing, beautiful, and uplifting for the season of Christ's birth.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-12-22

I was looking for something different from all the popular American Chirstmas music that has been re-done so many times. Here is a collection that satisfied me, and will delight both Franco-phones and Anglo-phones (English speakers) Some of the pieces are very chant like, but others are lively songs with lots of energy. Especially notable are tracks # 18, Or vous trémoussez, pasteurs de Judée, # 13, Noe, Noe, and my personal favorite, # 27, O l'heureuse journée. You likely will not recognize any of the tunes, so it may take a bit for this album to sound like Christmas, but it quickly did for me. The ancient instruments employed also give the music a unique sound that is really neat. This is a CD worth purchasing

5 out of 5 stars This is excellent work.......1999-11-19

I am a musician and a medieval history buff, and first heard the Beauvais segments of this recording over the car radio, as I parked intending to do some Christmas shopping. I could not leave the car until the last note was sung and immediately began a search for the recording. The music is so...right, like a little time trip, haunting, triggering the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Christmas album........1999-09-04

Beautifully clear voices mix with period instruments and voices of character to present a lively, touching, and thoroughly enjoyable mix of music of centuries past.

5 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding recording.......1998-12-26

Joel Cohen and the boston Camerata have recorded an outstanding collection of French Christmas carols.
