Although classifiable as nu metal, the nine-piece Mushroomhead don't rest on the sugar hooks or one-shot blasts that are associated with the genre, instead expanding and twisting ideas in a manner that's genuinely bizarre and thoroughly entertaining. "Before I Die" is a furious headbanger, while "Never Let It Go" is reminiscent of Faith No More circa Angel Dust, and "Born of Desire" is like a head-on collision between Slayer and a symphony orchestra. For those who love a raw, serrated riff with no interference, "Episode 29" is 1 minute 35 seconds of pure nectar. Ultimately, this Cleveland group's effort to expertly integrate styles and strains is 98 percent successful. This artistically progressive metal ensemble deserves attention. --Steffan Chirazi
Album Description
XX is the band's debut national release, featuring re-mixed material from their hard-to-find independent releases Mushroomhead(1993), Superbuik(1996), and M3(1999). Quality Q-pack packaging, killer production and ultra hi-gloss artwork makes this one of the most sought after releases of 2001.

Mushroomhead.......2006-07-16
Mushroomhead's first album, "XX", brings to mind Faith No More around the time of "King for a Day" and "Angel Dust" with a little of Mudvayne's "L.D. 50" thrown in, yet they have their own unique sound. Part of that is the combination of guitars and keyboards / piano. Few metal bands make the effort to blend and harmonize the two instruments this well, Faith No More and Type O Negative topping my mental list. What makes the album really pop, however, are the two lead vocalists.
Jeffrey Nothing bellows melodically in a Jonothan Davis (or perhaps Mike Patton) style wail, while J Mann growls, shouts and even raps along side. Based on the liner notes, it appears the two singers often write their lyrics independently and on a couple of tracks they even sound like they're arguing back and forth and interrupting each other. Rather than sounding chaotic and confused, though, this is actually what makes Mushroomhead's sound work the best. Good examples of this are Solitaire Unravelling, These Filthy Hands, and Never Let It Go.
Other stand-out tracks include The New Cult King, Born of Desire, and Too Much Nothing (very short, but one of the catchiest tracks). There are a couple of weaker tracks, particularly two tracks each performed by only one of the two vocalists (Chancre Sore and 43) but in all, it's a fairly solid album and an impressive debut.
Mushroomhead is by far my favorite band of all-time.......2005-09-26
I first saw this album in the store and I had never heard of this band before and I thought they looked awesome on the front cover so I took a chance and bought the CD. When I got it home and listened to it for the first time I immediately fell in love with the songs Solitaire Unraveling, These Filthy Hands, Never Let It Go, The Wrist, The New Cult King, and Too Much Nothing. I love how they make 8 band members work so uniquely and the two vocalists just put a whole other aspect to their music and separates them from many other bands. I saw the Solitaire Unraveling video on Headbangers Ball and I think it is so awesome and shows just how much emotion there is in their music. I would recommend this album to anybody who wants to listen to and a unique and talented band.
a public service announcement...LAY OFF MUSHROOMHEAD.......2005-09-08
first off anyone who says MH ripped off slipknot is an idiot because they 1.sound differnet 2.have each member do something ulike slipknot. dont get me wrong slipknot is a good band but they love themselves too much, they sued burger king for that commercial with the chicken band thing for gods sake, is mushroomhead like that...i think not. and they didnt copy the mask and uniform because mushroomhead was a real band before slipknot and (as people have said in the past)they were both beat by mr. bungle for that.
when people say MH sux because of the vocals my answer is shut up because your stuipd. jeff and J MANN are good singers. so basicly give these guys a try if you dont like them you dont like them but dont say they suck and take the time to write a review about it even if you say you need to warn people because they can make decisions on there own.
stand out tracks in my opinion is:
solitare/unraveling,never let it go, before i die, and new cult king
overall its a good cd but you should also get XIII, because its (in my opinion) their best so far and if it werent for that cd this one would get 5 stars.
thanks for taking the time to read my review and please give these guys a chance. peace im outta here
Original Release from Eclipse Records.......2005-08-22
Now I know what you're thinking, why are there two releases of "XX"? Well after they switched from Eclipse to Universal records they re-released the album "XX" but they also re-recorded all the songs with less hard core vocals (BIG MISTAKE!) The original album is by far much better than the Universal release in December of 2001. If you're not sure which one to go with GO WITH THIS ONE!!
One of my favorites.......2005-07-05
This cd is very unique and alot different than XIII. Mushroomhead is one of my favorite bands and in my opinion they are better than slipknot. Dont get me wrong, I like slipknot, but each musician actually does something and with 2 vocalists, you cant go wrong. They use the perfect blend of clean singing and heavy vocals from J Mann. The electronics are awsome and the samples are creepy. A great live band and now they have a new singer in place of J Mann. From what Ive seen and heard, he does a good job filling the void J Mann left. The entire cd is excellant with some death type songs and also Bwomp with some "rapping" when he is actually just talking fast. And for the record, mushroomhead cane out BEFORE slipknot which means that they are indeed NOT copying the mask idea. Mushroomhead remains one of the best borderline metal/nu metal bands Ive ever heard.

Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

It's always a treat to experience the best of something: in this case, a performance of 16th-century music. Of course, the form and makeup of the viol consort, which includes various sizes of viols, often joined by other strings such as lute, itself is an instrumental configuration as close to perfection as any ensemble can be. This, accompanied by a style of writing that fully exploits the complementary timbres and the abilities of each instrument to delineate intricate polyphonic passages as well as to deliver chordal harmonies with uniquely rich resonance, makes for some of the most listenable music ever invented. Jordi Savall and his Hesperion XX are simply the world's best at this sort of music, and on this program they just flawlessly go about their business, bringing us more than two dozen delightful, dancing pieces from several composers, including John Taverner, William Mundy, and Anonymous. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Transported to another age.......2001-01-23
Not that many years ago, my favourite classical DJ expressed the view that "original instruments" ensembles were a "passing fad". He was strong in his belief that early instruments, even those manufactured today on early models, couldn't provide the depth and range of music his critical ear required. The emergence of La Petite Band began the process of bending his rigid outlook. When Jordi Savall came into prominence, and in particular Savall's Hesperion XX, this commentator had become a staunch advocate. I followed right along with him.
This CD exemplifies the superb quality of music and sound production Savall and his team. It would be interesting to know just how deeply Savall gets into the production of his CDs, for they are uniformly excellent. This one takes us from Savall's Catalan to the courts of Elizabethan England. In presenting that time and place, Savall adds a special knowledge of how the music of that era was produced. You almost automatically feel yourself transported to an English manor house or palace to join the other courtiers in listening to these delightful renditions. It's important to remember that this was the primary domestic entertainment of the day. We forget how sensitive the hearing of the listeners of that day must have been to nuances we often miss in the sound competitive world we live in. They could, and did, focus on the sound and only the best was accepted. Or, indeed, even offered by composers.
Savall, as usual, has drawn it all together with finesse and ability. Watching him conduct is to see each note from every instrument drawn forth and assessed. It's almost as if the sound will not be released to the listener unless perfectly produced. But under his direction, that is exactly what is accomplished. Of all the CDs of Elizabethan instrumentals, this must be your first choice.
Exceptional!.......2001-01-22
This a wonderful cd and a must have if you enjoy this genre of classical music. A wonderful recording and very soothing to listen too. I find the opening track quite catchy. Get it!
Beautiful Sounds.......1999-11-18
This is a complex sort of music played on period instruments giving the late twentieth Century listener a challenge. Once you get over the novelty of the tones you find an underlying treat of rhythm and melody.
This is well worth buying.
Superb- For Connoisseurs of the Genre.......1999-08-22
Hesperion XX performs this genre of music as well as anyone today, and this recording shows their reputation is deserved. This music is played with consummate professionalism on period instruments. However, this might not be the best recording for a first exposure to this repetoire. It lacks a brightness that modern instruments have and that contemporary audiences frequently expect. It contains music by composers that you almost have to be a musicologist or a musician active in 16th century music to know. But if you want to hear a splendid and- I think- authentic recording of Elizabethan Consort music, then look no further.

Customer Reviews:
another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21
This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.
Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.
As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!
awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.
The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.
But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.
In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-06-16
This double CD is fantastic! Yes, it is appealing very much to my fantasy, my imagination. It makes me think of Bach as some folk music composer, partly because of the weird colours of the 'authentic' instrumentation, of course. But in fact, the - modern! - Juillard string quartet made me think of folk music, too, so there is probably something in the theme that Bach chose that hints to such an aspect of folk music, which makes me think of some ancient legend told. The very rich colours and the warm, beautiful playing make me consider this one of the best Art of the Fugue, certainly the most fantasy-appealing.
Munchinger has a very emotional Art of the Fugue, with modern orchestra, unmissable. Quite elegant, not so emotional, rather laid back, is Ristenpart's performance, for orchestra too.
Amazing refinement and clarity.......2005-03-20
Jordi Savall's rather unique recording of this Bach masterpiece uses a consort of viols...treble, alto (!), tenor, and bass viols and also a consort of winds...cornetto, oboe da caccia, tenor trombone, and bassoon. Some pieces are recorded with strings alone, others with winds alone, and some with both of them.
Throughout, though, there is an amazing clarity and quality of tone and the counterpoint is brought out beautifully. The performers do not obscure the lines by using excessive vibrato or too many players on a part; yet, the playing is still expressive and beautiful. The smaller viols sound wonderful on the high notes, and the lower viols have a resonant yet clear tone that you don't find from a modern violin-based string quartet.
I agree with our other reviewer here...this must be the best recording of the Art of Fugue money can buy at this point, and that's saying something, because I have heard several other versions by top performers...yet Jordi Savall's unique but insightful rendition wins the five stars!
Oh, and do yourself a favor...if you want to buy this item along with the musical offering, don't buy them together as suggested by Amazon. It's cheaper to buy them in the boxed set called "Bach's Testament" which Amazon also sells. :) I would recommend buying that too, by the way, as the recording of the musical offering is also great.
Essential.......2003-12-05
Best "Art of Fugue" I've heard. The small orchestra befits the music. I have versions for organ, piano, string quartet, viol consort, and I feel as if Savall and his group give the most satisfying performance overall. A very spiritual recording of Bach's last great masterpiece.

Great Rocking Great Preaching!!!!!.......2007-04-26
This CD is nothing short of incredible!!!! It is song after song of head banging, ear bleeding music meant to draw you closer to Jesus! It was because of Rez Band I learned way back in the early '80's that you could be a long haired weirdo and still love Jesus... Because of Rez I learned that even if I didn't like hillbilly gospel music or hymns I could still be saved (actually I like them both anyway). The music production is also better quality than some of their earlier albums. If you're tired of the current mind numbing, anesthetizing, coma inducing worship music that's meant to bless you, and heal your various neuroses, etc, that is so popular these days, and you want music that will actually inspire you to turn your life around and live for Jesus then I highly recommend this CD!!!
Best Christian Rock Concert Cd of All Time.......2007-01-10
Rez Band Rocks in concert!! This Cd is so dynamic and powerful. Definitly the best Rez band recording ever. I feel like I'm there at the concert as Glenn and Wendi share their passion through their music and their testimony. If you enjoyed the studio recordings of Rez, this Cd is definitly the upgrade. Rez is 100 times better live. The energy level is amazing and Glenn just never seems to run out of steam. No whimpy songs on this cd, just pure rock passion.

Magnificent.......2007-01-29
A must to have for any baroc music lover.
Juan Bautista Jose Cabanilles (1644 - 1712) was a composer and principal organist (from 1666) at Valencia Cathedral, Spain. In 1668 he was ordained as a priest but he kept his positon as principal organist at the Valencian cathedral for more than 40 years. Cabanilles works for organ are the culmination of previous trends in Spanish organ composition, and at the same time they open new pathways for composers who followed him. Cabanilles was the last of the Spanish mystic organists, and we can find within his works the germ of the new musical form: the Sonata. He was certainly the greatest of the Valencian composers of organ music, and together with Correa de Araujo the most important organist of the 17th Spanish Musical Century.

good soundtrack!.......2006-12-22
this soundtrack is awsome! theres actualy 3 disks instead of 2 like it says:2 cds and a regin 2 dvd. the dvd also has a pretty cool screen saver for your computer.i love getting music from games, movies and anime, so when i got the game i really liked the score and bought this. $50 may seem pretty steap for a cd collection, bu if you take in to account that this is an import its actually worth the price. so if you like this game you will like the soundtrack.

A very special recording.......2006-05-21
Savall and Hesperion XXI often return to the same material, almost obsessively; yet this repertory - the interface of early Iberian art music and the traditional - sustains endless re-visiting and re-interpretation; there can never be one definitive interpretation of this endlessly rewarding music, as Renaissance and Baroque composers knew - producing as they did endless variations on traditional themes which had woven their way from the popular sphere to the realm of 'art' music. Some of these bass melodies are presented here - the 'Follia' and 'Canaries' -and it is wonderful that Savall has the artistic freedom to perform versions of these again and again on his own label, Alia Vox. The above disc was made with the French label Naive in the early nineties, and on the face of it, might appear to have been superseded by a number of discs made by Savall recently on Alia Vox - see titles such as 'Ostinato' from 2001 , 'La Folia 1490-1701', from 2000, and 'Altre Folie' from 2005, which has 're-takes' of some of the pieces on this disc, such as Mudarra's, and De Cabezon's. Yet I think this CD remains a very special disc, and I don't think Savall has necessarily improved on his interpretations as recorded here. Listen to the last piece on this CD, Savall's own improvisation for viol with violone on the Canarios ground melody; far terser, more grave and finally more interesting than his later rather rambling essay on the Canarios theme on the 'Ostinato' disc. The same applies to Arauxo's beautiful 'Todo el mundo' where Lorenz Duftschind's violone makes for an almost hypnotic bass part, more so than the organ used in the 'Ostinato' disc. In fact it is the eschewal on this CD of any keyboards or (especially) a percussion at times liable to irritate which make the viol consort-based peformances on this disc so pleasing - producing a clean, dark texture almost unique in Savall's recorded output.
The string-based pieces comprise transcriptions of 'high style' Fantasias for organ by Cabaniles (for me the highlight of the disc) and improvisations on melodies going back to the time of the Troubadors. These are alternated with solos for Lawrence-King's double harp and Lislevand's guitar and theorbo. In short this is a unique disc comprising performances which clearly have recieved a lot of thought before being commited to disc. It's one which, if you like this repertory, you'll want to return to again and again, and I hope too that Savall has not paid the last visit to this repertory - even several recordings later!
Beautiful music!.......2003-05-21
I have about ten Cds of the Hesperion groups music. This is my favorite. It has a richness and life that rivets me to the performance every time. By the time this disc is over, I am completely relaxed. I have played it for my non-classical loving friends, and they have also commented on what a great piece it is. The sonics are excellent too.

Customer Reviews:
Rather lovely.......2007-03-02
All lovers of Heinrich Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein and, of course, Samuel Scheidt, should seriously consider buying this beautiful recording of Scheidt's consort music. Yes, it is a rather "stringy" version of his music and it was probably intended for cornetts and sackbuts, well, at least, much of it sounds like that, but I am also a lover of the viola da gamba, which I do NOT play! [I'm a cornett man, myself]
Any increase in the amount of Samuel Scheidt's music available on CD just has to be a good thing. We've read about this composer. Know that he was a close contemporary of Schütz and Schein. We know that he was and is regarded as an important, if not great, composer. Yet how much of his music to we actually hear these days? Not a lot, unfortunately.
Samuel Scheidt wrote a lot of consort music for strings, cornetts and sackbuts, alas, much of it is now lost! :-(
However, the Ludi Musici of 1621 has survived and it is great to be able to hear it.
