With 11 consistent studio records under their belt, it is unlikely that the Tragically Hip would do anything to sonically surprise their fans. Truth is, the group has never swayed from their agenda of creating lyrically intelligent, melodic classic rock for the 21st century. World Container provides exactly that, and accomplishes it with a vibrancy that proves that a band who has been together for 23 years can still create affecting and entertaining music for the Canadian masses. Most of the noteworthy changes are subtle in nature; guitarist Paul Langois seems to have brought in sounds from a few of his heroes into the studio, from the Police-affected reggae in "The Lonely End of the Rink" to the Edge-esque resonance of "Luv(sic)." The band has also incorporated piano into a few numbers, most noticeably during "Pretend," a rare love-ballad. For a group who has spent decades avoiding songs that overtly follow the topic of love, the track is quite beautiful, and frontman Gord Downie's vocals soar within it. Romance aside, Downie is up to his usual tricks, yowling and chatting to himself in "The Kids Don't Get It" and "The Drop Off"--both of which contain wide-lunged, ringing choruses that will undoubtedly turn into onstage highlights. To quote Radiohead, you'll find "no alarms and no surprises" on World Container, just more of the same blues-affected music from Canada's long-reigning kings of rock. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:

Big, Bold And Beautiful.......2007-04-11
World Container reveals what was missing from the last few Hip albums, boldness. Great Hip records of the past were a continuing expansion of the group's hard-rock sound. Something tells me Gord Downie and company didn't know how their fans would respond to Day for Night or Trouble at the Henhouse, but were more interested in continually pushing the envelope of their style. That Hip shows-up on World Container as the songs show a willingness to further move the band forward with their blues based guitar rock.
Songs such as The Kids Don't Get It reveal this new energy as a previously unheard affection for The Police shows up with the reggae based guitar hooks from the 80's icons put front and center. Now don't mistake this record as a dance record, but it is decidedly more upbeat with the music, and possibly the band, having more of what we call fun. Bob Rock's inclusion as producer insures the record isn't shy about hooks and choruses, but the biggest plus Rock brings to the proceedings is his additional dashes on top of the proven, and in Canada anyway overplayed, core Hip sound. In View is a good example of this as the addition of some keyboard over this toe tapping rocker creates one of the Hip's catchiest songs ever. Yer Not The Ocean also benefits from some piano thrown into the mix allowing the song to seem like a familiar Hip song while still sounding fresh.
Whether Tragically Hip fans allow World Container to right the Hip ship upward remains to be seen. The title track however, which see's Gord Downie jump full into anthem mode as his poetry flows over a piano ballad in a sometimes ridiculous but none-the-less brave closing track reveals a band with the confidence to enjoy the ride wherever it may take them.
Why they aren't superstars in the U.S. is beyond me........2007-04-05
The middle of the CD with tracks such as Luv (sic) and In View keep everyone's head in the room happily bobbing to the beat.
The end is highlighted with songs like the feverishly paced The Drop Off where Gord's voice seriously raises the intensity of the album. The title track, World Container may be considered this generation's "Piano Man" if only it were a minute or two longer. Truly an epic Hip song.
Overall, excellent. Why are you reading this and not clicking "Add to Cart?"

If you've never heard the Hip, you're missing out on a fantastic experience. These guys can rock as hard as anyone or hit you with a pop tune you can't get out of your head. The lyrics range from the brilliant to the bizarre, but that's part of the Hip's allure. They're NEVER boring. Who else would sing about sled dogs, hockey players, kicking someone out of a lifeboat, imprisoned virgins, and a stripper who stops in a coughing fit? "Close. But that's not why. I'm so hard done by."

The Hip straight up, with no chaser.......2005-06-25
One minor complaint of mine relates to the record's production values. "Day for Night" has a trebly gloss to it that prevents the songs from achieving their full dynamic range and sonic potential. Compare the engineering to the Hip's subsequent CD's, which exhibit a more full-bodied sound. The production values, while pedestrian, are consistent, and the record flows well from one song to the next.
"Day for Night" may not quite be the Hip's best outing, but it captures the essence of the band's style perhaps better than any other release, with the possible exception of "Phantom Power" (1998). As such, it's an excellent starting point for newcomers to the Tragically Hip.

Thanks for the Hip!.......2002-10-16
Take for example, Buffalo New York. The inhabitants of Buffalo are blessed with the good fortune of being able to tune in both Buffalo stations and stations eminating from Canada. Now, Canadian stations like CFNY 102.1 had been playing the Tragically Hip for years. Those lucky few who had the inclination to tune into those Canadian stations were treated to hear the Tragically Hip.
Now, Buffalo stations play The Hip and when the Hip is in town, hold themselves out as "The Hip Station." The lesson? If you come across a review of a band you never heard of and people say "Band X is the best out there!" You should give Band X a try.
That is what many of my closest friends did when I put them on to the Tragically Hip's "Day For Night."
"Day For Night" is a rarity in music - a COMPLETE ALBUM that flows from beginning to end. There is a logical progression of sonic and emotional energy to the album. You would swear that it is possible that some songs were written around a word picked out at random from the dictionary (See,"Apartment Song" from the Hip's album "Trouble at the Hen House" for a possible example - the random word there being "esthete").
I find "Day For Night" to be the easiest Tragically Hip album to reccomend and it is that rare piece of music that I find can be almost universally recommended.
In short, if you are reading this, you should seriously think about either buying this album or somehow getting your hands on this album so that once you listen to it, you would buy it.
Song Highlights (i.e. my favorites):
1) "Nautical Disaster" - A bare, stripped down son at the beginning that turns into a rocker at the end. It also is the single most fascinating and intellectually stimulating songs I have ever heard.
2) "Yawning or Snarling" - Sometimes, it is GOOD to write a song about SOMETHING. There is a story behind "Yawning or Snarling" and makes interesting listening when combined with "38 Years Old" from the Hips "Up to Here Album."
3) "Grace, Too" - A staple of the Hip's live show it showcases lead singer Gordon Downie's unique vocal stylistics.
4) "Scared" - Talk about telling a story, the lyrics of the song tell you that the song is telling a story...
5)Inevitability of Death - A great rocker after the simmering on "Thugs" and features the great lyric, "We don't go to hell, just our memories do/ And if you go to hell, I'll still remember you"

THE essential live Hip album.......2007-02-16
When buying and listening to live albums of any band I always look for a few distinct qualities: Set list, length, quality of recording, amounts of ad-libbing, and crowd interaction. This album fails in none of those departments! The song choices for the concert is excellent in my opinion, the quality is equivalent to a studio recording, and the crowd is heard well throughout the whole CD.
The only possible drawbacks are that sometimes Gordy gets a little long-winded between verses and songs. Although it'll never bother me, I can see it being a low point for some listeners. Finally, even though its 14 tracks long I still would wish for more tracks but I think that's just me being greedy.
Buy this!!
I Said "I'm Tragically Hip, Come On Just Let's Go"..........2005-04-15
This was my first ever Tragically Hip CD and (moreover) one of the first CDs that I ever owned. So, I have a bit of a bias in its favour. That being said, there is no better introduction to the Hip than their stellar live album "Live Between Us".
This CD offers hit after hit and really captures some of the tremendous energy of the Hip live. Ive seen them 4 times now and those have been some of my favourite concerts ever. Ive never been disappointed by the Hip live, and you won't be disappointed by this.
I would hesitate to recommend this album to the seasoned Hip collector, as it doesn't add that much to the studio versions and there are many, many great live Hip tracks widely available to download ("Killer Whale Tank", anyone?). But, it is still a great CD and is far from a waste of money
All in all, this is a awesome live CD from a awesome live band.

Strange experience, the Hip. Since the release of their first EP in 1987, they've steadily become one of the best-loved and most successful rock bands Canada has witnessed (they do shows with Alanis, for Juno's sake!). If you are American, you're probably just discovering them now, without the context of their nine previous albums. So when first listening to In Violet Light you can feel disoriented--as if you happened to watch, say, your first episode of Twin Peaks midseason, having never known there was such a thing. This album exists in a slightly more stylized and dramatic world than the everyday--something like an indie-rock opera starring Bryan Ferry, but without the models. It might take a few listens to understand how Gordon Downie can sound like the Talking Heads ("Are You Ready") and then R.E.M. ("Silver Jet" and "Leave") and then the Smiths ("Throwing Off Glass") while still maintaining his own distinct and consistent voice. But given a few listens, this other world makes more and more sense, and you'll find yourself inhabiting it. --Laura EtlingCustomer Reviews:
Got me totally hooked.......2005-06-15
This is not to say, though, that there are not upbeat, fun tunes that are infused with pure energy and excitement ("All Tore Up", "Are You Ready"). The wordsmithing in some of these songs is really great also.
Going To A Cottage This Summer?.......2005-04-15
Sorry, I got off track. This is a beautiful CD. It starts off rocking (Are You Ready, Use It Up, Silver Jet) and moves towards classic Hip-style serenity (Good Life, A Beautiful Thing, Leave). Dire Wolf is in my top 5 Hip songs of all time, which (for me) is really saying something.
Take, for example, some typical(ly beautiful) lyrics, from the aptly titled Beautiful Thing:
In ulcerating silence
perspective comes
the way it always does - it's ransom.
So randomly, somebody calls
the phone rings and it brings Niagara Falls.
"It's 3 o'clock in the morning,
You'd better be dyin" and you were
so we talked about the time
and where it went,
unremarkable events,
and how one day took two days
and they got spent.
How you'd continue, carefully in degrees
trying to do one true beautiful thing.
Its not the most radio single-ish music that the Hip have ever done, and it takes a listen or two before you find yourself humming (and then singing) along. But this CD is like my old blue blanket, that makes me feel happy and peaceful and comfortable.
This isn't entry level stuff, but if you really like the Hip, you'll really like this!
Less Shiny Hip, but a great one to get to know while driving.......2004-11-18
What killed Music@work perhaps was "Tiger the Lion" with its pointless academics about "Art In Our Time" and "Purposeless Play" bla bla bla... that one track really derails a disk with many good songs to offer. And with those stupid sonar/whale sounds - I'm sure people must hate such exercises in cleverness.
Violet Light has by contrast an almost stark simplicity, and is over almost before it begins, especially if you are a chronic track-skipper like me. But there is texture and soul on this record, and the oft-mentioned "Darkest One" is a song after my own heart. I have no idea what the lyrics mean, but it's a powerful statement while driving along into a 401 sunset.
"Well the wi-ild are
strong
And the stro-ong are
the Darkest Ones,
You're the Darkest o-one..."
(Tom Petty wishes he wrote such a compelling chorus!)
The Hip.. production value to match songwriting value.......2004-06-29
For the most part, I have liked them, enjoyed the singles, but not been a "rush out and buy it immediately" kinda fan.
"In Violet Light" marks an important step for the Trag... finally, the acoustic properties of the album can keep up to the material. After hearing the single, and the quality of it, I DID rush out and buy it.
The best sounding Hip album ever, and the songs contained within are also some of the best material they have produced in some time.
I agree with those that say that the Hip are leaning on their past for this one- the guitars and vocals are highly reminiscent of very early Hip, but the experience they have gained in between shines brightly through.
I am a converted, newly affected, Hip fan, now.
If you love good music, especially when it sounds great, then whether or not you are a huge Hip fan, go get this... the production is brilliant.
Way to go, boys.
A Good Album - But Not For First Timers...........2003-12-31
However, Not all of the CD is like this. For example, "The Darkest One" is a catchey tune with great vocals that anyone could love. As well as "The Dark Canuck" which is another great song.

In Between Evolution is a perfect title for the Hip's newest disc; more than any other time in the group's history, this record was written and recorded amidst varying states of historical discordance. Frontman Gord Downie's lyrics were heavily affected while touring the deep south during the height of the Iraq war (especially the anthemic "It Can't Be Nashville Every Night"). Months later, while the band was rehearsing the new tracks in Whistler, raging floodwaters washed out a bridge near their practice space, killing people in the process. In traditional Downie fashion, nature's carnage was turned into a mournful, respectful musical legacy via the disc's first single, "Vaccination Scar".All of these are simple descriptions of the disc's foundations, but here are the facts. Producer Adam Kasper (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age) is responsible for sonic nuances that differ from previous Hip discs: many songs seem punchier, a little more succinct. That said, the opening cut may scare longtime fans; "Heaven is a Better Place Today" kicks things off double-time, creating music that has more in common with old punk rock than latter day Hip. By track number two however, ("Summer's Killing Us"), things feel considerably more joyful and familiar. The rest of the disc is nothing out of left field, a series of mood-laden storyscapes that accelerate from quiet to driven; like other recent Hip discs, Evolution is a whole journey, rather than a series of rockin' singles. Fans looking for another "New Orleans Is Sinkin'" are best directed to the group's earlier records, rather than their latter-day ones. --Denise Sheppard
Album Description
The Tragically Hip have been making vibrant, gritty rock 'n' roll for over 20 years. A legendary live act, the band has also sold over 6 million albums worldwide. In Between Evolution, the follow-up to their acclaimed 2002 release, In Violet Light, may be their best yet. Propelled by raw, driving guitars and Gordon Downie's inimitable vocals, In Between Evolution features standouts such as "Vaccination Scar," "The Heart of the Melt," and the first single, "Summer's Killing Us." Produced by Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam).Customer Reviews:

You Can't Be Young Again.......2006-01-06
Anyone doubting this theory only needs to listen to In Between Evolution (IBE) by the Tragically Hip. After releasing the more subtle and nuanced In Violet Light (IVE), maybe the Hip thought they had to rev their engines and go back to the hard-rocking days of their early records. IVE attained only platinum status in Canada, while some bands may have called that a career highlight, the Hip at one stretch had five records in a row go well over the 4-times platinum mark with two of those records reaching diamond status.
The need to make a statement shows up all over In Between Evolution (IBE), as songs such as Summer Is Killing Us jump off the speaker with an energy the band has not shown in a number of records. Unfortunately the Hip are no longer angry young men brimming with testosterone and the attempts at rollicking rock come across as out of their grasp. The last truly great Hip songs in my opinion (Lake Fever, The Darkest One) have a mature energy to them and show a band brimming with confidence. The sense of that mature older band rarely shows up on IBE.
Instead, for the first time I have experienced when listening to the Hip, the songs on IBE have a sense of been there and done that much better. Gus: The Polar Bear From New York seems like a retread of the dark and murky sounds heard on Day For Night and Heaven Is A Better Place today seems like a cast-off from the meat and potatoes rock of Fully Completely. The last time the band sounded this familiar the end results was Phantom Power a record whose sheer diversity and song quality made the record sound like an aim for perfection, on IBE, the band seems to be throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick.
Now some songs do stand-out; Vaccination Scar manages to sound fresh while maintaining the Hip's rep for writing quirky and unique songs. It Can't Be Nashville Everynight meanwhile has a nice driving drum beat with a sing-song quality chorus making this loud, thrashing tune the one time where the Hip pull off their attempt at angry rock. Unfortuately there are not any other songs I can think of on IBE that truly stand out as memorable.
Here's hoping the next Hip record reveals a band that accepts what it is: an older, established rock band who has embraced what stage their lives are at and where their music should be.
solid from top to bottom and everyway inside out!.......2005-11-22
Led by solid guitar based beat, this album contains faster paced tunes such as "Vaccination Scar" and "Heaven is a Better Place Today" (just to name a few) which blend with more mellow cuts such as "Goodnight Josephine" and "Meanstreak". Needless to say those which are not are more than compensated with Gord's voice.
Hands down one of the best albums todate!

The Hip at their peak.......2006-08-07
It was the last straight rock album before venturing into the obscure with Day for Night. At this time the band would sell out colosseums 3 nights in a row, and be the main attraction at outdoor festivals, building the crowd into a frenzied sea of bobbing heads, jumping up and down in unison as Gordon Downie balanced on top of the speakers on stage, held the microphone stand over his head and passionately screamed out lyrics while the band rocked their way to the climax.
Check out "Locked in the Trunk of a Car".
Classic Canadiana, But That's OK With Me.......2006-05-04
There is a bit of a dark side to this album, but there is enough levity and pace to counterbalance it. From the opener to the closer, this album contains enough of the quntessential Hip quirkiness to satisfy the long-time fans, but also has enough mainstream substance to attract the casual fan. The acoustic "Wheat Kings" gently reflects on life on the Canadian prairies, but the songs that stand out on this recording are the rockers - "Looking For A Place To Happen" and "At The Hundredth Meridian" open the album, but it is "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car" that emerges as one of the top rock songs ever to come out of the frozen North with its sizzling guitar solos and great driving beat.
this is as good as music gets.......2006-04-23
Quintessential Canadian record.......2005-05-20
Albums that have a dark lined undercurrent to them, really speak to me, and Dowie's lyrical prowess here seems to reach into some real angst.
Needless to say as well, and I can't explain why, this is an absolutely quintessential "Canadian" album. The reasons though are not very easy to explain, but if you really want to understand the landscape and the feeling of a country, listen to this album.
That being said, this was without question the "Hip's" most successful album in terms of classic songs. Numerous videos were made from this album, and were staples of the then Muchmusic video program (Courage, At The Hundreth Meredian, Locked In The Trunk of a Car) up in Canada. It made the band household names, and has pretty much solidified them as the domineering band in Canada for years to come (yes more than Rush).
It's strange, many of the songs on here I enjoy immensly, Courage's catchy chorus, The weepy pigeon camera, the tragic Wheat Kings, the madness of Locked in a trunk in the car, to the almost Judas Priest riffing of Fifty Mission Cap.
I constantly have run into many Tragically Hip fans up North and 90% of them tell me this is their favourite album and their best.
I kind of got sick of the band's over-exposure, and the majority of their albums really do nothing for me minus one or two songs. However, this was the album where the band struck gold.
Just a correction for how the Hip got their name.......2005-05-10
