From Amazon.ca

With 11 consistent studio records under their belt, it is unlikely that the Tragically Hip would do anything to sonically surprise their fans. Truth is, the group has never swayed from their agenda of creating lyrically intelligent, melodic classic rock for the 21st century. World Container provides exactly that, and accomplishes it with a vibrancy that proves that a band who has been together for 23 years can still create affecting and entertaining music for the Canadian masses. Most of the noteworthy changes are subtle in nature; guitarist Paul Langois seems to have brought in sounds from a few of his heroes into the studio, from the Police-affected reggae in "The Lonely End of the Rink" to the Edge-esque resonance of "Luv(sic)." The band has also incorporated piano into a few numbers, most noticeably during "Pretend," a rare love-ballad. For a group who has spent decades avoiding songs that overtly follow the topic of love, the track is quite beautiful, and frontman Gord Downie's vocals soar within it. Romance aside, Downie is up to his usual tricks, yowling and chatting to himself in "The Kids Don't Get It" and "The Drop Off"--both of which contain wide-lunged, ringing choruses that will undoubtedly turn into onstage highlights. To quote Radiohead, you'll find "no alarms and no surprises" on World Container, just more of the same blues-affected music from Canada's long-reigning kings of rock. --Denise Sheppard

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-12

The Hip doesn't morph the way U2 does. Its albums are variations on a theme. Some are better than others and World Container is one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Big, Bold And Beautiful.......2007-04-11

Following The Tragically Hip for the last few years has been following a sinking ship. Seemingly entering the twilight of their career, remembering better records and more of the moment releases was the common feeling when listening to Music at Work, In Violet Light and In Between Evolution. Good albums, but not the bands best nor inspiring in the ways of previous records.

World Container reveals what was missing from the last few Hip albums, boldness. Great Hip records of the past were a continuing expansion of the group's hard-rock sound. Something tells me Gord Downie and company didn't know how their fans would respond to Day for Night or Trouble at the Henhouse, but were more interested in continually pushing the envelope of their style. That Hip shows-up on World Container as the songs show a willingness to further move the band forward with their blues based guitar rock.

Songs such as The Kids Don't Get It reveal this new energy as a previously unheard affection for The Police shows up with the reggae based guitar hooks from the 80's icons put front and center. Now don't mistake this record as a dance record, but it is decidedly more upbeat with the music, and possibly the band, having more of what we call fun. Bob Rock's inclusion as producer insures the record isn't shy about hooks and choruses, but the biggest plus Rock brings to the proceedings is his additional dashes on top of the proven, and in Canada anyway overplayed, core Hip sound. In View is a good example of this as the addition of some keyboard over this toe tapping rocker creates one of the Hip's catchiest songs ever. Yer Not The Ocean also benefits from some piano thrown into the mix allowing the song to seem like a familiar Hip song while still sounding fresh.

Whether Tragically Hip fans allow World Container to right the Hip ship upward remains to be seen. The title track however, which see's Gord Downie jump full into anthem mode as his poetry flows over a piano ballad in a sometimes ridiculous but none-the-less brave closing track reveals a band with the confidence to enjoy the ride wherever it may take them.

5 out of 5 stars Why they aren't superstars in the U.S. is beyond me........2007-04-05

An outstanding album finally released in the states. World Container starts off moving at a solid pace in "Yer Not the Ocean" and does not let up. The band certainly has progressed since their Road Apples and Fully Completely days. Songs such as The Lonely End of the Rink have instrumentals that sound like they just came out of a Killer's album, not the hip. But it still works!!!

The middle of the CD with tracks such as Luv (sic) and In View keep everyone's head in the room happily bobbing to the beat.

The end is highlighted with songs like the feverishly paced The Drop Off where Gord's voice seriously raises the intensity of the album. The title track, World Container may be considered this generation's "Piano Man" if only it were a minute or two longer. Truly an epic Hip song.

Overall, excellent. Why are you reading this and not clicking "Add to Cart?"

5 out of 5 stars Best Hip Album since Fully Completely.......2007-04-04

This album has The Tragicallt Hip back to more of a rock sound than the more melodic tones of theie more recent albums. Recommended as essential for those Hip fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not my favorite Hip album.......2007-03-24

There will never be an album or song by the Hip that I'll dislike, for sure. This is another good one, seems a little short and is a little lighter than normal. It's been fun watching their music evolve over the years, and I look forward to seeing them live in Vancouver some day.

4 out of 5 stars Where have I been?.......2007-07-08

"Seemingly nonexistent in the eyes of American pop culture -- yet continually boasting some of the nation's highest grossing concerts -- Canadian rockers the Tragically Hip have managed to secure themselves legendary status both above and underground while remaining almost complete anonymous. Like any good band of the people, the Hip know that their fans are their lifeblood, so in compiling their first ever "greatest hits" collection, they left it up to the listeners. Chosen online at their website, the 34 remastered tracks that make up Yer Favorites -- two of which, the ballsy "No Threat" and the wistful "New Maybe," are brand new -- may not go deep enough for longtime followers, but for anyone who has spent the better part of their musical life wondering what all of the fuss was about, this is their chance to get schooled. Poetic yet accessible, raw yet grandiose, the Tragically Hip have often been lumped unfairly into the jam band circuit, when in reality they have far more in common with an act like Pearl Jam than they do Phish. They're an arena bar band maintaining the rawness of a juke joint amid the thunderous applause of 150,000 pairs of hands, and while their brand of heartland rock may be steeped in the Great White North, it's appeal is universal".

5 out of 5 stars Not a weak track.......2007-05-13

Had Fully Completely, Phantom Power, and Music@Work in mothballs for the last couple of years, and until listening to this, forgot how much I missed the Hip's sound. Think comfort rock with obscure lyrics. This is a stellar collection which spans their early more traditional sound and later experimental leanings. Perfect sequencing too.

5 out of 5 stars All their best work!.......2007-03-09

Great compilation of the Hip's best stuff. Two CD's! You can listen for hours! Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Addition To Any Music Collection.......2007-02-11

For the enthusiastic Hip listener, these discs won't let you down. Definitely all their hits and most all of their favored songs are included plus an array of dynamic tracks from their twenty+ years of public rockin'. Although perhaps an excess of songs maybe listed, any band lover would conclude that this affable compilation is sure to be something to cherish and respect all what this great Canadian band has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Do yerself a favor.......2006-08-30

I already owned every Hip album, but I got this CD as part of the box set with the DVDs. To my surprise, it's not the DVDs I enjoy most but this 2-disc CD set. They did a stellar job picking songs and organizing them to flow well from one to the next.
If you've never heard the Hip, you're missing out on a fantastic experience. These guys can rock as hard as anyone or hit you with a pop tune you can't get out of your head. The lyrics range from the brilliant to the bizarre, but that's part of the Hip's allure. They're NEVER boring. Who else would sing about sled dogs, hockey players, kicking someone out of a lifeboat, imprisoned virgins, and a stripper who stops in a coughing fit? "Close. But that's not why. I'm so hard done by."

5 out of 5 stars one of the great ones!.......2007-03-24

I think for pure rock 'n roll/blues, this is one of the greatest 20 albums ever made. I bought this on cassette back in 1990, and assumed they where going to be huge. I still can't understand why they are not. It seems that everyone I know that hears this CD, loves it. I was in the military when I bought this, and for awhile, was the most dubbed tape in my unit. They must have awful marketing working for them...

5 out of 5 stars Not the Whip, "When the Weight Comes Down".......2007-01-01

I just heard this for the first time today, around 17 years after it first came out. I don't remember hearing it on the radio, it just goes to show that they weren't then and aren't now playing songs from great rock CD's like this one. I saw a movie entitled, "A Man in Uniform" in a motel in Port Angeles, WA in 1996. There are two "Tragically Hip" songs on it. It inspired me to get this and "Yer Favourites". I forgot the name of the movie but found a scrap paper where I had written it down. Funny, how we can accidentally find some great rock and roll sometimes. Ten years later I get the movie. And you know the rest of the story, only I'd like to include that this is one of the great rock and roll albums of all time, not just the 80's or 1989.

5 out of 5 stars first hip album and all I can say is wow!!.......2006-12-04

These guys are great, original, great guitar licks. New Orleans is Sinking is a great foot stomper and hip mover. I loved the whole album form beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars instantly transformed.......2006-06-04

I saw the hip , in 90 or 91 , at the metropolis in harrisburg pa, after hearing airplay of "New Orleans is sinking".... they were the opening act for Eric Johnson"...( another sterling canadian product; along with Rush, Cowboy Junkies, and the RHEOSTATICS ( whom after 16 years of listening to the HIP I find it astronomically impossible to have missed for this long))... 2006 first listen... let's just say I was instantly transormed....best tracks on Up to Here... NO is sinking, Boots or Hearts, Trickle Down... hey!!! check out Rheos Whale Music tracks...1,2,3,9,10,17

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD.......2006-01-07

One of the best rock n' roll CDs there is. When I heard "New Orleans is Sinking" for the first time I waited for the Hip to break big in the U.S. I still don't know why that didn't happen, but after ten years plus, Up to Here has lost none of its luster. A marvelous combination of straight ahead bluesy rock with sly, heartfelt lyrics. Gord Downie's interesting vocal style blends perfectly with a rambling, imprecise guitar sound. "New Orleans is Sinking" is still one of my all-time favorite songs and I also particularly like "Blow at High Dough", "I'll Believe in You (or I'll Be Leaving You)" and the ballad "38 Years Old", but there isn't a bad song on the CD. I'm glad my local rock station played these guys for a few weeks all those years ago or I would never have heard of them and missed out on this great CD.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite.......2007-01-04

By far my favorite Hip of all. Top to bottom very very good!

5 out of 5 stars Top Of The Hip.......2006-05-04

The Hip had enjoyed limited commercial success in their native country, but this is the album that made the USA sit up and take notice. Gordon Downie's quirky yet captivating vocal presence and lyrical whimsy is nicely balanced by the musicianship, although I'd expect nothing less from producer Don Smith. Strong commercial content in the form of "Cordelia", "Little Bones", "Twist My Arm", and "Three Pistols", yet enough Canadiana to keep the hardcore Hip fan from slinging accusations of "sell-out". Even after a slough of releases that has seen the Hip mature over two decades, this is still recognized by most Hip fans as their strongest work.

One other reviewer had mentioned that the weak point on the album was "Fiddler's Green". I wholeheartedly disagree. It is a touching, soul-wrenching lament that will rip the heart out of anyone who has lost a child.

4 out of 5 stars Too Bad It Was Not Digitally Remastered.......2004-05-24

Great cd, by a Great band..Just was a major disappointment, the cd was transferred from Analog Tape to Cd format...Makes for muffled Vocals, and thats a shame, Downie is one of the most original ive heard in a long time...But for die hard "TH" fans, its a must have...!!

5 out of 5 stars so good so cool.......2003-10-30

This band makes some of the best rock music ever. Road Apples has to be the best of a long list of best CDs You can play this CD to death....never get tired of it. Hope they keep churning out music

I only heard of them last year, but I have a lot catching up to do.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few complete and perfect albums.......2002-11-19

My girlfriend is Canadian and a fan of the Hip. She took me to a live show here in Denver and now I'm hooked. This was the third album I've purchased of theirs and it's by far the best. Growing up on rock and roll this is one of the few complete albums without one bad song, well maybe Fiddler's Green, but the rest is fantastic. "On The Verge" is still my favorite. This IS rock and roll at it's best. I don't think you can play this one too loud.

4 out of 5 stars The Hip straight up, with no chaser.......2005-06-25

Before the Tragically Hip began expanding their style with efforts like "Trouble at the Henhouse" (1996) and "Music @ Work" (2000), they essentially perfected their hard-edged, distinctly Canadian flavor of rock with "Day for Night," their fifth album of new material. This is a solid, workmanlike effort, consisting mainly of midtempo, grooving rockers like "Grace, Too," "Greasy Jungle," and "Thugs." Standout tracks include "Daredevil," a dynamic, uptempo rocker; "Scared," a mellow change of pace; and the dramatic "Nautical Disaster," one of many songs vocalist/lyricist Gordon Downie would write about tragedies at sea.

One minor complaint of mine relates to the record's production values. "Day for Night" has a trebly gloss to it that prevents the songs from achieving their full dynamic range and sonic potential. Compare the engineering to the Hip's subsequent CD's, which exhibit a more full-bodied sound. The production values, while pedestrian, are consistent, and the record flows well from one song to the next.

"Day for Night" may not quite be the Hip's best outing, but it captures the essence of the band's style perhaps better than any other release, with the possible exception of "Phantom Power" (1998). As such, it's an excellent starting point for newcomers to the Tragically Hip.

5 out of 5 stars Still Great.......2004-02-24

The Hip have done it again, one more great set of songs.

5 out of 5 stars This IS the Best T Hip CD!.......2003-02-15

I will keep this short as there are lots of reviews for this one. Why? Because this record grabs you like no other they have done! Thoughtful, intense, intellegent and provoking. This is the second CD I got from this band. Try Road Apples if you want something more commercial that is really good, but this one takes the cake! Gordon should have stuck with the band! Great spin!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Be All and End All.......2002-11-23

This is the singularly most important album I have ever heard. I am a huge HIP fan and this set is the peak of their greatness. I agree with the other reviewers that this is the rarest of albums in that you must listen to it in its entirety. Very seldom does a set come along that must be experienced as a whole. I compare this opus to "Dark Side" by Pink Floyd or "Sgt. Pepper" by The Beatles in that it's separate tracks are awesome but the whole fifty-five minutes is the true gift. The band could perform this set live in its entirety in a concert and the audience would not be disappointed. "Grace Too" is the best live song I have ever experienced and "Thugs" and "Nautical Disaster" are on my top ten greatest songs of all time. This is the greatest gift that any Canadian band has given to the world. I am proud to say that my native country Canada spawned the best live band I have seen (ten times). The Hip rule!

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the Hip!.......2002-10-16

Music is really funny... many reviews will say "Band X is the greatest band out there. I don't see why people just don't like Band X?" Well, one problem is the rate of exposure "Band X" receives.

Take for example, Buffalo New York. The inhabitants of Buffalo are blessed with the good fortune of being able to tune in both Buffalo stations and stations eminating from Canada. Now, Canadian stations like CFNY 102.1 had been playing the Tragically Hip for years. Those lucky few who had the inclination to tune into those Canadian stations were treated to hear the Tragically Hip.

Now, Buffalo stations play The Hip and when the Hip is in town, hold themselves out as "The Hip Station." The lesson? If you come across a review of a band you never heard of and people say "Band X is the best out there!" You should give Band X a try.

That is what many of my closest friends did when I put them on to the Tragically Hip's "Day For Night."

"Day For Night" is a rarity in music - a COMPLETE ALBUM that flows from beginning to end. There is a logical progression of sonic and emotional energy to the album. You would swear that it is possible that some songs were written around a word picked out at random from the dictionary (See,"Apartment Song" from the Hip's album "Trouble at the Hen House" for a possible example - the random word there being "esthete").

I find "Day For Night" to be the easiest Tragically Hip album to reccomend and it is that rare piece of music that I find can be almost universally recommended.

In short, if you are reading this, you should seriously think about either buying this album or somehow getting your hands on this album so that once you listen to it, you would buy it.

Song Highlights (i.e. my favorites):

1) "Nautical Disaster" - A bare, stripped down son at the beginning that turns into a rocker at the end. It also is the single most fascinating and intellectually stimulating songs I have ever heard.

2) "Yawning or Snarling" - Sometimes, it is GOOD to write a song about SOMETHING. There is a story behind "Yawning or Snarling" and makes interesting listening when combined with "38 Years Old" from the Hips "Up to Here Album."

3) "Grace, Too" - A staple of the Hip's live show it showcases lead singer Gordon Downie's unique vocal stylistics.

4) "Scared" - Talk about telling a story, the lyrics of the song tell you that the song is telling a story...

5)Inevitability of Death - A great rocker after the simmering on "Thugs" and features the great lyric, "We don't go to hell, just our memories do/ And if you go to hell, I'll still remember you"

5 out of 5 stars THE essential live Hip album.......2007-02-16

It is very easy to get excited about this CD when you look at the set list for this concert. A solid arrangement of singles and classics along with other songs not as popular such as The Wherewithal and Don't Wake Daddy make it timeless. I can easily see myself picking this CD up again and enjoying it just as much 10 years from now.

When buying and listening to live albums of any band I always look for a few distinct qualities: Set list, length, quality of recording, amounts of ad-libbing, and crowd interaction. This album fails in none of those departments! The song choices for the concert is excellent in my opinion, the quality is equivalent to a studio recording, and the crowd is heard well throughout the whole CD.

The only possible drawbacks are that sometimes Gordy gets a little long-winded between verses and songs. Although it'll never bother me, I can see it being a low point for some listeners. Finally, even though its 14 tracks long I still would wish for more tracks but I think that's just me being greedy.

Buy this!!

5 out of 5 stars I Said "I'm Tragically Hip, Come On Just Let's Go"..........2005-04-15

... She sort of bit her lip, "Gee I don't know"

This was my first ever Tragically Hip CD and (moreover) one of the first CDs that I ever owned. So, I have a bit of a bias in its favour. That being said, there is no better introduction to the Hip than their stellar live album "Live Between Us".

This CD offers hit after hit and really captures some of the tremendous energy of the Hip live. Ive seen them 4 times now and those have been some of my favourite concerts ever. Ive never been disappointed by the Hip live, and you won't be disappointed by this.

I would hesitate to recommend this album to the seasoned Hip collector, as it doesn't add that much to the studio versions and there are many, many great live Hip tracks widely available to download ("Killer Whale Tank", anyone?). But, it is still a great CD and is far from a waste of money

All in all, this is a awesome live CD from a awesome live band.

5 out of 5 stars The Hip at their finest.......2004-07-23

As a long time listener to "The Hip" transplated to the good ol U.S of A I turn all my friends into Hip fans with this one.. Some of the most recent work they have done shows more maturity, but this is a great intro to a great Canadian Band...

4 out of 5 stars What a live album should be........2003-12-10

This was a very pleasant suprise. Not only did I get the live album I was looking for, but I also got most of their popular songs. Of course there's a few tracks missing, but this does include "Grace Too", "Springtime In Vienna", "Gift Shop", and "Ahead By A Century". Plus it's got the excellent and moving "Courage". Most people should like "Gordon Downie's" ramblings between songs, but everyone should like how good this sounds. It's one of the best sounding live albums I've ever heard. Near studio quality, but with the crowd noise of course. Overall, I'd call it the best release from "The Tragically Hip", and one of the few available, even though it's an import.

5 out of 5 stars the "hippest" live cd oot there.......2003-02-07

"Live Between Us" is the only live CD i have ever heard that captures the whole experience of a concert. You can feel the crowd from beginning to end...The CD captures the unmistakeable presence of Gord D as he hammers oot the lyrics...from The Luxury to Nautical Disaster...this CD captures all that a live show is...and more

Strange experience, the Hip. Since the release of their first EP in 1987, they've steadily become one of the best-loved and most successful rock bands Canada has witnessed (they do shows with Alanis, for Juno's sake!). If you are American, you're probably just discovering them now, without the context of their nine previous albums. So when first listening to In Violet Light you can feel disoriented--as if you happened to watch, say, your first episode of Twin Peaks midseason, having never known there was such a thing. This album exists in a slightly more stylized and dramatic world than the everyday--something like an indie-rock opera starring Bryan Ferry, but without the models. It might take a few listens to understand how Gordon Downie can sound like the Talking Heads ("Are You Ready") and then R.E.M. ("Silver Jet" and "Leave") and then the Smiths ("Throwing Off Glass") while still maintaining his own distinct and consistent voice. But given a few listens, this other world makes more and more sense, and you'll find yourself inhabiting it. --Laura Etling

5 out of 5 stars Got me totally hooked.......2005-06-15

If there ever was an album that could get you hooked on a band, 'In Violet Light' is that album. The lyrics are straightforward, yet laden with double-entendre and deeper meaning. A true poetic achievement from Gordon Downie. (I believe there is even a lyric/poem book published for this album.) A group of us even presented a rendition of "Its a Good Life if You Don't Weaken" at our summer camp as a tribute to a staff member who was diagnosed with cancer, but continued to work the summer. Truly powerful stuff in here!

This is not to say, though, that there are not upbeat, fun tunes that are infused with pure energy and excitement ("All Tore Up", "Are You Ready"). The wordsmithing in some of these songs is really great also.

5 out of 5 stars Going To A Cottage This Summer?.......2005-04-15

If you plan to trek out to some lake-side wilderness come warmer weather, this CD is a must buy. This is the perfect music to accompany some late evening drinks under the stars by the fire side (with friends; if its just you and your lady, then be a gentleman and throw on some Marvin Gaye or Coldplay or whatever she's into).

Sorry, I got off track. This is a beautiful CD. It starts off rocking (Are You Ready, Use It Up, Silver Jet) and moves towards classic Hip-style serenity (Good Life, A Beautiful Thing, Leave). Dire Wolf is in my top 5 Hip songs of all time, which (for me) is really saying something.

Take, for example, some typical(ly beautiful) lyrics, from the aptly titled Beautiful Thing:

In ulcerating silence
perspective comes
the way it always does - it's ransom.
So randomly, somebody calls
the phone rings and it brings Niagara Falls.
"It's 3 o'clock in the morning,
You'd better be dyin" and you were
so we talked about the time
and where it went,
unremarkable events,
and how one day took two days
and they got spent.
How you'd continue, carefully in degrees
trying to do one true beautiful thing.

Its not the most radio single-ish music that the Hip have ever done, and it takes a listen or two before you find yourself humming (and then singing) along. But this CD is like my old blue blanket, that makes me feel happy and peaceful and comfortable.

This isn't entry level stuff, but if you really like the Hip, you'll really like this!

5 out of 5 stars Less Shiny Hip, but a great one to get to know while driving.......2004-11-18

More gritty than the slightly overwrought "Music@work" CD preceding it, this one tries to shoot more from the Hip and succeeds.

What killed Music@work perhaps was "Tiger the Lion" with its pointless academics about "Art In Our Time" and "Purposeless Play" bla bla bla... that one track really derails a disk with many good songs to offer. And with those stupid sonar/whale sounds - I'm sure people must hate such exercises in cleverness.

Violet Light has by contrast an almost stark simplicity, and is over almost before it begins, especially if you are a chronic track-skipper like me. But there is texture and soul on this record, and the oft-mentioned "Darkest One" is a song after my own heart. I have no idea what the lyrics mean, but it's a powerful statement while driving along into a 401 sunset.

"Well the wi-ild are
strong
And the stro-ong are
the Darkest Ones,
You're the Darkest o-one..."

(Tom Petty wishes he wrote such a compelling chorus!)

4 out of 5 stars The Hip.. production value to match songwriting value.......2004-06-29

I am NOT a die-hard Hip fan.
For the most part, I have liked them, enjoyed the singles, but not been a "rush out and buy it immediately" kinda fan.
"In Violet Light" marks an important step for the Trag... finally, the acoustic properties of the album can keep up to the material. After hearing the single, and the quality of it, I DID rush out and buy it.
The best sounding Hip album ever, and the songs contained within are also some of the best material they have produced in some time.
I agree with those that say that the Hip are leaning on their past for this one- the guitars and vocals are highly reminiscent of very early Hip, but the experience they have gained in between shines brightly through.
I am a converted, newly affected, Hip fan, now.
If you love good music, especially when it sounds great, then whether or not you are a huge Hip fan, go get this... the production is brilliant.
Way to go, boys.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Album - But Not For First Timers...........2003-12-31

This album is great. Anyone who says different must be deaf. Or, maybe they have never listened to The Hip before. To really appreciate this album, I think the listener needs to be a bit more familiar with their style, and their type of music. To anyone listening for the first time, I recommend getting Phantom Power, or Music @ Work. Phantom Power would most likely be your best bet. The Hip is a great band, however this album is more for the expirienced Tragically Hip listener.

However, Not all of the CD is like this. For example, "The Darkest One" is a catchey tune with great vocals that anyone could love. As well as "The Dark Canuck" which is another great song.

In Between Evolution is a perfect title for the Hip's newest disc; more than any other time in the group's history, this record was written and recorded amidst varying states of historical discordance. Frontman Gord Downie's lyrics were heavily affected while touring the deep south during the height of the Iraq war (especially the anthemic "It Can't Be Nashville Every Night"). Months later, while the band was rehearsing the new tracks in Whistler, raging floodwaters washed out a bridge near their practice space, killing people in the process. In traditional Downie fashion, nature's carnage was turned into a mournful, respectful musical legacy via the disc's first single, "Vaccination Scar".

All of these are simple descriptions of the disc's foundations, but here are the facts. Producer Adam Kasper (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age) is responsible for sonic nuances that differ from previous Hip discs: many songs seem punchier, a little more succinct. That said, the opening cut may scare longtime fans; "Heaven is a Better Place Today" kicks things off double-time, creating music that has more in common with old punk rock than latter day Hip. By track number two however, ("Summer's Killing Us"), things feel considerably more joyful and familiar. The rest of the disc is nothing out of left field, a series of mood-laden storyscapes that accelerate from quiet to driven; like other recent Hip discs, Evolution is a whole journey, rather than a series of rockin' singles. Fans looking for another "New Orleans Is Sinkin'" are best directed to the group's earlier records, rather than their latter-day ones. --Denise Sheppard

In Between Evolution, the follow-up to their acclaimed 2002 release, In Violet Light, may be their best yet. Propelled by raw, driving guitars and Gordon Downie's inimitable vocals, In Between Evolution features standouts such as "Vaccination Scar," "The Heart of the Melt," and the first single, "Summer's Killing Us." Produced by Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam).

5 out of 5 stars Ahhh the Wonderful Hip.......2006-06-08

Oh what's to say? Great quirky songs, wonderfully just-off-center lyrics and Gord. Sign me up for every CD these people release from now until eternity.

3 out of 5 stars Waiting for something to happen ...........2006-05-13

The Hip have established themselves as a band that simply writes quality songs, and on In Between Evolution that's what you get. BUT, anyone waiting for this band to experience an evolution of their own will be disappointed. Maybe they can learn from their country-mates, Rush, and seek out new influences and dare to play something inventive. I don't want to be too critical of the Hip -- what they do is unique and awesome at times --- but it would be disappointing to me, as a fan, if they didn't try to reach a new level musically. Maybe it will happen, but not with this album.

3 out of 5 stars You Can't Be Young Again.......2006-01-06

There is a reason why musicians make their most energetic, angry music when they are young. Often times, bands come out with a bang and seem to fade away as the years progress, the bands that stick around, see Green Day, are the one's who seem to realize that as they mature, so should their music.

Anyone doubting this theory only needs to listen to In Between Evolution (IBE) by the Tragically Hip. After releasing the more subtle and nuanced In Violet Light (IVE), maybe the Hip thought they had to rev their engines and go back to the hard-rocking days of their early records. IVE attained only platinum status in Canada, while some bands may have called that a career highlight, the Hip at one stretch had five records in a row go well over the 4-times platinum mark with two of those records reaching diamond status.

The need to make a statement shows up all over In Between Evolution (IBE), as songs such as Summer Is Killing Us jump off the speaker with an energy the band has not shown in a number of records. Unfortunately the Hip are no longer angry young men brimming with testosterone and the attempts at rollicking rock come across as out of their grasp. The last truly great Hip songs in my opinion (Lake Fever, The Darkest One) have a mature energy to them and show a band brimming with confidence. The sense of that mature older band rarely shows up on IBE.

Instead, for the first time I have experienced when listening to the Hip, the songs on IBE have a sense of been there and done that much better. Gus: The Polar Bear From New York seems like a retread of the dark and murky sounds heard on Day For Night and Heaven Is A Better Place today seems like a cast-off from the meat and potatoes rock of Fully Completely. The last time the band sounded this familiar the end results was Phantom Power a record whose sheer diversity and song quality made the record sound like an aim for perfection, on IBE, the band seems to be throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick.

Now some songs do stand-out; Vaccination Scar manages to sound fresh while maintaining the Hip's rep for writing quirky and unique songs. It Can't Be Nashville Everynight meanwhile has a nice driving drum beat with a sing-song quality chorus making this loud, thrashing tune the one time where the Hip pull off their attempt at angry rock. Unfortuately there are not any other songs I can think of on IBE that truly stand out as memorable.

Here's hoping the next Hip record reveals a band that accepts what it is: an older, established rock band who has embraced what stage their lives are at and where their music should be.

4 out of 5 stars solid from top to bottom and everyway inside out!.......2005-11-22

Granted I might be baised to this album as The Hip are one of (if not the) best bands I have ever heard, but I must say that this album is totally solid. Every track is great. Much like Fully Completely and In Violet Light this album/disc holds more than one or two tracks which rank among my personal favorites, but unlike those other albums there is not one track that I forward over when its on.
Led by solid guitar based beat, this album contains faster paced tunes such as "Vaccination Scar" and "Heaven is a Better Place Today" (just to name a few) which blend with more mellow cuts such as "Goodnight Josephine" and "Meanstreak". Needless to say those which are not are more than compensated with Gord's voice.
Hands down one of the best albums todate!

1 out of 5 stars Out of patience.......2005-11-02

I still listen to everything the HIP put out hoping that one day they will rock again. You shouldn't have to work to like a CD. It should just be good and this one isn't. I wonder what happened to the HIP, who I considered at one time to be the best rock band on the planet. Is it drug abuse or did they just get old? Did Gordon lose his voice or just become lazy? I miss the old HIP "fully and completely".

5 out of 5 stars The Hip at their peak.......2006-08-07

Their best album is Road Apples, but this comes in at a close second.

It was the last straight rock album before venturing into the obscure with Day for Night. At this time the band would sell out colosseums 3 nights in a row, and be the main attraction at outdoor festivals, building the crowd into a frenzied sea of bobbing heads, jumping up and down in unison as Gordon Downie balanced on top of the speakers on stage, held the microphone stand over his head and passionately screamed out lyrics while the band rocked their way to the climax.

Check out "Locked in the Trunk of a Car".

4 out of 5 stars Classic Canadiana, But That's OK With Me.......2006-05-04

Gordon Downie's prowess as a lyricist has always astounded me. His songs, from the "inside jokes" that no one outside a small group of people is supposed to get to the lyrics that make me go "What the F^#$ is he talking about?", I always appreciate his genius. This album is chock full of all of that.

There is a bit of a dark side to this album, but there is enough levity and pace to counterbalance it. From the opener to the closer, this album contains enough of the quntessential Hip quirkiness to satisfy the long-time fans, but also has enough mainstream substance to attract the casual fan. The acoustic "Wheat Kings" gently reflects on life on the Canadian prairies, but the songs that stand out on this recording are the rockers - "Looking For A Place To Happen" and "At The Hundredth Meridian" open the album, but it is "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car" that emerges as one of the top rock songs ever to come out of the frozen North with its sizzling guitar solos and great driving beat.

5 out of 5 stars this is as good as music gets.......2006-04-23

if you're not a hip fan or don't know the band - this is place to start. they had a large work of excellent music, but this album is amazing from start to finish. hard to classify because the range of their music, i guess the best way to describe them is guitar driven rock. fans of pearl jam are often times fans of the hip. whether the acoustic backed "wheat kings", the epic "eldorado" or my personal favorite the anthem like "fifty mission cap"; this album is wonderly different song, after wonderfuly different song. it's hard not to sing along, tap a foot and just plan enjoy a great band that's definitely unlike any other out there. enjoyable driving, partying or just hanging out. the finest canadian export since rush and that's saying alot. enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Quintessential Canadian record.......2005-05-20

Let me first say I have never been a Tragically Hip fan. THAT being said I can't ignore this albums perfection.

Albums that have a dark lined undercurrent to them, really speak to me, and Dowie's lyrical prowess here seems to reach into some real angst.

Needless to say as well, and I can't explain why, this is an absolutely quintessential "Canadian" album. The reasons though are not very easy to explain, but if you really want to understand the landscape and the feeling of a country, listen to this album.

That being said, this was without question the "Hip's" most successful album in terms of classic songs. Numerous videos were made from this album, and were staples of the then Muchmusic video program (Courage, At The Hundreth Meredian, Locked In The Trunk of a Car) up in Canada. It made the band household names, and has pretty much solidified them as the domineering band in Canada for years to come (yes more than Rush).

It's strange, many of the songs on here I enjoy immensly, Courage's catchy chorus, The weepy pigeon camera, the tragic Wheat Kings, the madness of Locked in a trunk in the car, to the almost Judas Priest riffing of Fifty Mission Cap.

I constantly have run into many Tragically Hip fans up North and 90% of them tell me this is their favourite album and their best.

I kind of got sick of the band's over-exposure, and the majority of their albums really do nothing for me minus one or two songs. However, this was the album where the band struck gold.

5 out of 5 stars Just a correction for how the Hip got their name.......2005-05-10

First of all, the song Courage is for Hugh Maclennan, a favourite mid-20th century Canadian novelist of Gord Downie's. And secondly the term 'Global Village' was coined by a Canadian philosopher of sorts named Marshal McLuhan.
