The latest in a series of highly polished albums of good-natured boogie, blues, and singer-songwriter fare, Bonnie Raitt's Silver Lining won't disappoint the initiated. Recorded with her highly seasoned road band and coproduced (again) by the ubiquitous Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, this is a high-quality product. The question, as always, is whether the material raises it to the level of extraordinary. Raitt picks songs shrewdly. Here, the unearthed gems are David Gray's title song and the closing ballad, "Wounded Heart," by Jude Johnson. Less successful and more, well, familiar are the songs cowritten with her bandmates. Instrumental highlights include Bonnie's slide duel with Roy Rogers on "Gnawin' It" and Andy Abad's highlife guitar chops on Oliver Mtukudzi's "Hear Me Lord." Jon Cleary's barrelhouse keys throughout owe a debt to Billy Payne of Little Feat. One may occasionally wish the producers had been allowed more rein to pepper the arrangements with their trademark quirky instrumentation, but the record rewards repeated listens. --Rob StewartCustomer Reviews:
Eclectic Bonnie tones down the electric.......2006-03-06
I still tend to prefer Bonnie when she plays it a bit more straitforward, rather than veering off track. More familiar trademark Raitt here includes the shimmering title track (written by David Gray), and "Valley of Pain," where her ever expressive slide guitar is back at the forefront. Elsewhere, there is everything from the low down n' muddy (with horns) "Gnawin' On It," to the funky "Monkey Business," and the vaguely raggae "Hear Me Lord," around to the sparce piano driven closer "Wounded Heart."
Bonnie has no doubt earned all her stripes, and deserves to enjoy her sunset years with such artistic variance. Though I'm sure there are more than a few of us that miss the good times of "Thing Called Love" and "Something to Talk About." At the end of the day, any slightly better than average BR album is equal to a great one by most everyone else... so it's all relative.
Not her best effort.......2005-11-28
It does have I Cant Help you Now.
No Getting Over You is another very good song and the best on the album in my mind.
It is a very strong blues song. I like Bonnie best when she is playing the blues.
Wounded Heart ends the CD with a song played on piano.
This is not her best Cd, but not her worst either.

"It's funny," Dave Pirner ponders in "Success Is Not So Sweet," one of a dozen songs on Soul Asylum's first album since 1998, "how the players can't survive the game." Pirner has obviously come to realize that with accomplishment comes consequence, but with Soul Asylum, it also has brought resilience. After rising from barstool misfits to international pop stars in the early '90s, the band was ostensibly shot out of the sky. Two subsequent records failed to live up to the million-seller Grave Dancer's Union. Pirner's New Orleans home got caught in the middle of Hurricane Katrina. And founding member Karl Mueller lost his battle with cancer. Yet here they are with album number nine, sporting a trace more big league sparkle, but with the frayed cleverness and rock-solid musicianship that their fans know best. Pirner's melody-rich musings "Stand Up and Be Strong," "Lately," and "Bus Named Desire" allow ample elbow room for guitarist Dan Murphy, and his bittersweet ballads hearken back to gold records and runaway trains. Sure, success may come with a price. But it can also have a silver lining. --Scott HolterAlbum Description
Soul Asylum's ninth full-length album, is every bit as quirky and off-centered cut-to-the-bone rock as their hardcore fans have come to expect, an indication that the Minneapolis-bred band has lost none of its edge. And why should they? The new Soul Asylum songs--"Crazy Mixed Up World," "Standing Water," "Success Is Not So Sweet," "All Is Well," "Good For You," "Lately," "Oxygen," and the lead single "Stand Up And Be Strong"--capture the band at its best: swinging, soothing, and rocking."I'm really proud of this record," said Dan Murphy. "It's a guitar record and it was really fun to record. It will always remind me of Karl when I listen to it. He was really sick, but still pulled through and finished it in Soul Asylum fashion."
"It makes me think of Karl," agreed Dave Pirner. "It was long overdue to record exclusively in Minneapolis because we hadn't done so in 15 years and the natural surroundings of home was something we needed. We feel extra proud of it because we did it on our own."

"Say Hello to the Underground, Say Hello for Me".......2007-02-25
Soul Asylum's brand new Studio album since 1998's `Candy from a Stranger'. The band re-emerges & brings to its fans `The Silver Lining' which is not the hard core material a fan may expect but I am pleased to see that the band has evolved for the better.
The new album has a modern pop rock edge to it. It certainly is driven with Guitars as David Pirner states. The album is also one in which we see the departure of bassist Karl Mueller who struggled with Cancer but contributed on the record until the very end.
Soul Asylum, I am sure will sell out their tour dates upon announcement & they certainly in their new evolved sound are just as edgy & rock driven. This is proved by the following tracks:
*Stand Up & Be Strong (Excellent Lead Single), *Listen, *Crazy Mixed Up World, and
*The Great Exaggerator.
The real highlights include:
*Watcha Need, *Standing Water, *Success Is Not So Sweet, and the hidden track *Fearless Leader which should have been an album track & not a hidden track but it's a treat none the less!
Whilst the new album may be filled with more structured rock pop songs with catchy infectious choruses that you can feel are coming from miles away, I am pleased that Soul Asylum continued & soldiered on showcasing their dedication to music. As with so many of towards so called artists - we'd be lucky if they gave us more than 1 record.
After their album `Let Your Dim Light Shine', `The Silver Lining' would have been a better follow up than `Candy from a Stranger'. But a good come back it certainly is.
Thank you Soul Asylum for putting out an album that I can enjoy from start to finish.
P.s. Any tour dates penned in for Auckland, New Zealand??

A mixed bag of romantic offerings.......2001-12-17
Lanza, in fairness to BMG, was an inconsistent performer. In the earlier part of his brief career, he had a tendency to sing sharp, and at times his approach to various arias and songs lacked sensitivity. That's not to say he couldn't get it right. At his best he was extraordinary, combining one of the most powerful voices on record with just the right degree of melting mezza voce and a dazzling array of vocal colours. His sense of phrasing was, as Enrico Caruso Jr noted, "instinctively right", and his ability to get into the heart of a song was unquestionable. Even at his roughest, his singing was usually compelling, and one could never label any of his performances "boring".
The bad recordings generally fall into three periods of his life: the Coca-Cola Radio shows of 1951-52, the disastrous Lanza on Broadway album of 1956, and the illness-affected stereo remakes of his Christmas Carols and Student Prince albums, both recorded in 1959, the year of his death. The present CD includes material from the first two periods.
The "Coke" shows, as I've opined in a number of other reviews, produced some amazing performances of both arias and love songs. Unfortunately, however, lack of rehearsal time coupled with poor arrangements often led to the kind of wild, unrestrained singing that Lanza's detractors love to attack (while at the same time overlooking his great performances). On this CD, a number of Coke recordings were released for the first time: Danny Boy; My Wild Irish Rose; Neapolitan Love Song; and Torna a Surriento. The first two are lovely, notwithstanding a poor ending on Danny Boy and some uncertain moments in the tenor's lower register in this song. Victor Herbert's Neapolitan Song contains some piercingly sharp singing, a rough ending and some agreeable mezza voce. Torna a Surriento is too fast, too unpolished and not a patch on the piano accompaniment-only version that Lanza recorded three years later for the movie Serenade.
Among the other Coke selections is the sublime Memories, and the alternately touching and thrilling I'll Be Seeing You, with a B Flat climax that will knock your socks off. Wanting You is rough and exciting in equal measure - ditto the powerhouse Ah Sweet Mystery of Life with its ridiculously fast tempo.
Two songs from the ill-fated Lanza on Broadway album have been inexplicably included, though it must be said that at least these represent the better moments from this dreadful session. You'll Never Walk Alone contains more sharp singing, uneven rhythm and a certain bleariness, while the Borodin-adapted And This Is My Beloved is alternately belted and seductive. Incidentally, Lanza recorded a superior version of You'll Never Walk Alone for his Coke Shows; this is featured on the CD of the same name.
The real highlights for me are the immortal Serenade from The Student Prince; a thrilling Only a Rose (recorded three months after the Lanza on Broadway session and featuring a completely different voice); the aforementioned My Wild Irish Rose & I'll Be Seeing You and a mature rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria. Fans will also enjoy Arrivederci, Roma, and the ubiquitous Be My Love.
All in all an enjoyable hour, but if only more thought had been put into some of the selections...

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:

Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01
The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."
If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.

Terrific.......2005-04-30
Excellent Nils Album With The Help Of Some Friends.......2005-02-05
"Silver Lining" isn't anything to overtly special, but serves as a nice opener.
"Valentine" is an absolutely beautiful song strengthened by the presence of Bruce Springsteen on backing vocals. Their voices mesh very well together, and the song is amplified by a tremendous guitar solo coda from Nils. From there we go to
"Walkin' Nerve". Not a very complicated song, it's lyrically smart, features the rhythm drumming of Ringo Starr, and some good licks from Nils.
"Live Each Day" and "Sticks And Stones" are good rockers from Nils, though they take a bit of time to pick up in intensity.
"Trouble's Back" is a very angy and bitter song, one of the few I've heard about seeking some revenge on an ex. The star line up on this track helps to serve it very well with Clarence Clemons and Levon Helm really making themselves apparent. And again, Nils plays the heck out of his guitar.
"Little Bit O' Time" was in Nils catalogue of songs for quite some time, and finally put it onto a studio album here. It's a touching song, good rhythm to it, heartwarming lyrics, not a showcase of talent though, just a smooth listening experience.
"Bein' Angry" features Ringo Starr providing back up vocals. Yeah...seems a bit odd to me as well but it works. This song falls in line with the title track in not really standing out too much. It's a laid back transition into the next song...
"Gun & Run" very good song, with Levon Helm returning yet again to lend some of his vocal abilities and some harmonica playing. Very solid track overall.
"Girl In Motion" is the closer, and pretty much rounds out the emotional journey. The song may get you to squirt a tear or two, or just slightly depress you, either way it's a sad tale Nils weaves here.
Overall, an exceptional album, and many thanks to Nils for crafting such great music. If you get decide to buy this, you likely will not regret it. There's a mixture of songs on here that may not strike you the first time around, but repeat listenings will get them trapped in your head. Nils is a sorely under rated artist, and one of the greatest guitarists I've heard. Again, I should mention that though he gets some help from other musicians, even without them this would still be a tremendous CD.
