Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

My husband, who thought he'd never heard of Bog Seger, love the CD. They
are, of course, some of his favorite songs. He just didn't know the

Two years after LCD Soundsystem's eponymous full-length debut sent indie scenesters rushing to the dancefloor, the outfit headed by dance-rock producer James Murphy serves up another stiff cocktail of punk, dance, and funk with Sound of Silver. Analog synths, chugging basslines, chunky guitars, and Murphy's wild falsetto excursions are once again the foundation to which is added the new and strange, such as the heavily chorused voices that suggest backward-masking in the opener "Get Innocuous" and the captivating harmonics keyboardist Nancy Whang bounces off of Murphy's vocals on "Someone Great." If this album has its own version of "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House," it has to be "North American Scum," an infectious stormer that breezily dismisses Europe as a place where "the buildings are old and you might have lots of mimes." Such lines are good evidence that LCD's music would rather ridicule itself than fall into the kind of pretense and nostalgia it constantly lampoons. The album's title track reflects that hankering after one's teenage years is often interrupted when "you remember the feelings of a real live emotional teenager--then you think again," while the power ballad "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" wearily serenades the Big Apple as "still the one pool where I'd happily drown." True, LCD's music is not for everyone, which may have something to do with why their fans love them as they do. If you fall into the latter category, however, Silver is gold. --Brent Kallmer

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool Album.......2007-07-15

James Murphy, the one-man band behind LCD Soundsystem, toiled for most of the 90's in obscure underground rock bands before sliding into his role as a producer/remixer. I have to admit I passed up LCD's debut album a few years back, in spite of considerable buzz. I loved the title of the single "Daft Punk is Playing at My House," but found the actual song to be a repetitive one-joke dance track. I had been hoping for something more creative, similar to, well, Daft Punk's best work. After hearing Sound of Silver, I'm thinking there may be something more to Murphy's sprawling 2-disc first album than I gave him credit for at the time.

Sound of Silver is one of the bounciest, most exciting albums I've heard this year. LCD Soundsystem often gets labeled as dance-punk, but there isn't a lot of punk rock in their sound. It's more accurate to say that Murphy brings an aggressive, punk rock attitude and a certain griminess to his rock-tinged dance music. The album has an impressive variety of sound, from the opening electronics of "Get Innocuous" to the drum-fueled shouting of "Watch the Tapes" to the lounge ballad closer "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." Lead single "North American Scum" is crazy catchy, with a pulsing electronic bass and jagged guitar line accompanying Murphy's very funny lyrics about the European and American club scenes.

The album does drag in places, mostly due to the fact that it's still dance music at heart. So there are a couple of songs that go over the 7-minute mark without doing anything interesting. "Get Innocuous" suffers from this, as does the title track. "Sound of Silver" actually has pretty funny lyrics, but there's only 4 lines in the song, and they're repeated ad nauseum. On the other hand, "Us vs. Them" nudges into this territory without bogging down, due to its high-energy vocals. "All My Friends" is the longest song on the album, but it's also the best. It has another one of Murphy's irresistible hooks; a great series of piano riffs that propel the song for nearly 8 minutes. "All My Friends" also benefits from Murphy actually singing- he tends to sort of shout his way through most of the songs, but he makes the right call by opening up and using his singing voice here. "New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" also is clearly better for Murphy's singing. It's basically a torch song, and the broken-hearted croon he affects makes the song work as he sings about New York City's tourist-friendly 90's whitewash tearing out the heart and soul from the city.

At a lean 9 songs, Sound of Silver doesn't overstay its welcome, and even the longer dance tracks don't slow the proceedings down too much. This album is unique and fun, and musically very clever, and it's one of my favorites of the year so far

4 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-07-07

This was the first CD I ever heard from LCD Soundsystem and once I did, I was hooked. Excellent music has made me a fan.

2 out of 5 stars I've heard this before........2007-07-03

Why is everyone lauding this second effort from LCD Soundsystem so much? It sounds like his first album. I own his first double CD album and this, "Sound Of Silver", just sounds like a rehash of that. It's well produced, fairly nice to listen to, but it just seems as if LCD Soundsystem realizes they have a hook, something that people will buy, so that's what they'll put out. And unfortunately, I was duped into buying it. I wasted money on an album ('Sound Of Silver') that I basically could have heard by listening to his first album. All of the songs on this album sound like songs on his first, and the lyrics on some of the songs are laughable in the least, which I would quote verbatim from the lyric sheet, had I already not gotten rid of this CD, due to its taking up space in my CD rack. 'New York...', is a riot, anyone who produces a track like this cannot expect to be taken seriously. I hope for his next album that he does better, although I'm fairly certain I won't be buying it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than His Last One.......2007-06-22

If I have one criticism of this album it would be that he wears his influences on his sleeve. However, if you love Talking Heads' "Remain In Light" and Kraftwerk's "The Man Machine", you will probably like this album. The last track is also reminiscent of Grandaddy.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds like a hit!!.......2007-06-17

LCD Soundsystem are a US electronic rock group, with a very British sound, a fact not lost on them as they sing "and for those of you who still think we're from england / we're not, no" on the buzzing, incredibly catchy "North American scum".

The album comprises just 9 songs, averaging 5 minutes each. Each track takes 1 to 2 minutes to build up to the vocal delivery.

Case in point is "Someone great" with loads of layering and electronic effects building up to a Human League-like song with eighties sounding synths.

Similarly, "Get innocuous" takes about 2 minutes to build to a shimmery dance song (with disembodied vocals) which takes no prisoners.

"Time to get away" has lead singer James Murphy singing and yelping over a pulsing guitar drenched house groove. The title track is a sparse but hypnotic effects laden song. "All my friends" is a pulsing U2-esque song.

Closing is the lone ballad; "New York, I love you but you're bringing me down", starting off deceptively like a Coldplay song, building up to a blistering guitar solo, and an unexpected twist at the end. They sound like a totally different band on this one.

It does take a few plays to get into but once it gets into your head, you can't get it out. One of the best dance CDs of the year!

Album Description

Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Guitarist Steve Hackett soon signed on, as did drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, who'd later emerge (as would Gabriel) as a solo superstar. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure, Genesis grew from a progressive art-rock outfit into one of the biggest arena rock acts ever, with a long string of platinum-sellers and chart smashes. On this, their most comprehensive career-spanning collection to date, Genesis' remarkable evolution is revealed.

I never care about Genesis, so I decided to try to listen to them so I just bought this collection. I like it!. My favourite cd was the second one! songs like Abacab, Turn it on again, makes me wants to hear this cd over and over

4 out of 5 stars Great mix for the price!.......2007-06-17

For the price, this collection can't be beat. All the classics, all the hits, from all the different periods of Genesis.

A really good overview of their work.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction ahead of Genesis' 2007 US tour.......2007-06-07

Economic value: 5 Stars; Compilation: 4 Stars; Packaging: 3 Stars

Now that Genesis has decided to do the (take your pick: dreaded/hoped for) reunion tour this year, starting in Europe shortly, coming to the US later this year, it's time to revisit the only compilation that spans the entire Genesis studio catalogue.

"Genesis Platinum Edition" (3 CDs; 40 tracks; 235 min.) tracks the band's history in reverse chronological order, with one exception: the title track of 1997's "Calling All Stations", which is stuck at the end of CD1 and sounds totally out of place--for many reasons. But for that song, this covers Genesis 1971-1991, and it's amazing what these guys put out in 20 years, and how the band evolved. This compilation is a decent attempt to cover it all. CD1 (16 tracks, 78 min.) covers the band's most successfull years, and many of these tracks are also found on the "Turn It On Again - The Hits" compilation. Am I the only one to think that the songs from 1986's "Invisible Touch" album have aged very poorly? It makes me cringe to listen to them. (Note: "Tonight Tonight Tonight" comes in an edited, short version here.) CD2 (15 tracks, 77 min.) tracks the intermediary years and I was surprised how good these songs resonate still. Check out for example "Abacab" (in the full album version, thankfully), and "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow", but shamefully "One for the Vine" is missing, one of the band's best tracks ever (and perhaps the best song Tony Banks ever penned). CD3 (9 tracks, 80 min.) covers the Peter Gabriel years (1971-1975), and while I did not mind (and at times greatly enjoyed) Genesis' evolution to a mainstream successful band, this era is still the most compelling for me. Check out "The Cinema Show" and "Supper's Ready" (both here in full length) if you're not familiar with them, you'll be blown away, I promise you.

There is no arguing with the economic value of this compilation: 4 hours of music for $20, you can't beat that. The packaging is a different story: skimpy liner notes, and the booklet is misprinted with pages out of order... I have seen Genesis in concert only once, in Brussels on the 1977 tour for "Wind & Wuthering" and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Unforgettable. While I know that this year's reunion tour is probably a money-grabbing thing, I nevertheless do plan on seeing them when they come to Columbus in September, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars What the Turn it On Again collection should`ve been.............2007-05-14

This is, without a shadow of a doubt THE best collection of my favorite band of all time. Disc 1 is what the TIOA CD shoulda been. Not just pure hit machine pop but some great prog like Home by Sea & Mama COMPLETLEY UNEDITED. Also has a hard to find piece called Paperlate remixed.-5 stars. Disc 2 has classics like ABACAB & Turn it on Again totally remixed. it ain`t Genesis at its best but its good.-4.5 stars. Disc 3 is a masterpiece, prog rock greatness with Suppers Ready! Nuff said.-6 stars. steller.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, but can you - honestly - take Phil Collins seriously?.......2007-05-11

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Peter Gabrial, Steve Hackett (later of "GTR," a band Creem Magazine referred to as "SHT"), Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Mike Rutherford (he of "The Living Years" fam ), and...and...and...Phil Collins. EXCELLENT drummer! But WHY "push the envelope," seeing how annoying he can be? Oh well, "buy the ticket, take the ride," I guess...

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

5 out of 5 stars The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17

This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

2 out of 5 stars The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07

The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12

I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Selections.......2007-03-31

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

Following Staind's footsteps, Nickelback make the personal public and vent a history of frustration and resentment to melodic hard rock. The band's second album, Silver Side Up, starts with "Never Again," an angry tirade against domestic violence that sheds light on the issue without too much sap or sentiment. The album's catchy radio hit "How You Remind Me" and the song "Woke Up This Morning" tell of rotting relationships, while other tracks touch on damaged hope and lost dreams. The post-grunge, alt-metal combo backing these songs packs as strong a punch as the lyrical material, going hard with lots of hooks. The additional slide guitar on "Hangnail" and sludgy, alt-metal riffs on "Hollywood," "Money Bought," and "Where Do I Hide" add a little meat to the alt-rock bones on Silver, elevating Nickelback above the heap of copycat rockers clogging the airwaves. --Jennifer Maerz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nickelback's best album!.......2007-07-06

After getting "All the Right Reasons" I got all of Nickelback's older albums. While all are very good, I like this one the best. It has a grungy, hard-rock edge to it that I like and all of the songs on this album are very good!

The songs that stand out on this album are "Never Again", "Too Bad", "Just For", "Woke Up This Morning", "Money Bought" and "Good Times Gone". I do not like "How You Remind Me" too much because of all of the radio airplay it got when the song became popular. In my view, the overplay on the radio killed "How You Remind Me".

While I understand the frustration of many who say that Nickelback "sold out" because they decided to go more mainstream. However, I think they were developing their sound like many other bands do and see no difference between Nickelback's sound development and Soundgarden's doing the same thing.

While Soundgarden is, by far, a superior band (I have all of their CDs too), I can appreciate Nickelback's approach since they obviously have to balance making music and selling albums in order to make a living.

I think down the line Nickelback can "return to their roots" and crank out an album just as good as this one. It worked for The Scorpions and Pearl Jam and I think it can happen for these guys too.

It is Great!

Nickel Back has done it again, with their album Silver Side Up, another great hit. Their song "How You Remind Me" was nominated for record of the yearat the 2003 Grammy Awards. "Never Again" is a discription of demestic violence. Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake(vocals, guitar); Mike Kroeger (bass); Ryan "Nik" Vikedal (drums)make this band ROCK!!! Silver Side Up is an awesome follow up to The State ending with the taken acustic-meets-electric track of "Good Times Gone"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-01-10

I've listened to this CD over and over again. Every song is excellent! It is rare to find a CD where every song is great. This CD is a rare find!

5 out of 5 stars Solid rocker with a message.......2006-11-06

Recently started listening to Nickelback. Great songs with messages behind each song about the problems affecting our society today. From drug and alcohol abuse to domestic voilence to cheating these songs cover issues that matter and are sung with emotion and feeling. Two of the best songs are "Too Bad" about a father and son relationship that goes sour and "Hangnail" about a breakup between a couple. "How You Remind Me" and the song "Woke Up This Morning" tell about other bad relationships. Other songs talk about broken hope and lost dreams.

Lively live performance by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. How can you beat "Katmandu"?

5 out of 5 stars LIVE BULLET ! (Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band show the world how to rock n' roll).......2007-06-19

Recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall, !977's Live Bullet from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Great rock classics, funky soul music, and good old rock n' roll make up the entire album. Seger, a Dearborn, Michigan native, is right at home, and that just adds to the warmth and enthusiasm on Live Bullet. Tina Turner's Nutbush City Limits starts things off with a funky rock beat. The classic Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser medley is next (this is the version that's played by radio stations). It rocks, and also has emotional significance for millions of people. They tear through Van Morrison's I've Been Working like they mean it. The definitive version of Turn The Page is here, the one you've heard on the radio all these years. Of course this is a great rock classic, one of the greatest rock songs ever. The rousing version of Ramblin' Gamblin' Man will certainly get your body moving, and it's never sounded better than it does here. The Silver Bullet Band, complete with horns, really shines on Heavy Music, and you could almost swear it was Wilson Pickett singing on parts of the song. And that's quite a complement! This live version of Katmandu rocks 10 times more than the studio version does and sounds 10 times better. In fact, all of the songs on this album do. Lookin' Back, Get Out Of Denver, and Let It Rock wrap things up in good rocking fashion, with great vocal performances from Seger, and more excellant hard rocking from the band (especially guitar). Live Bullet is a great album, full of hard driving blue collar rock n' roll, and famous rock classics from America's favorite old time rock n' rollers, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums ever made - EVER.......2007-05-15

If you can't appreciate live Bob Seger, we'll just assume you don't really love good live rock 'n roll. In concert, the man knows how to rock the house like few others. "Nutbush City Limits", "Let It Rock", "Ramblin Gamblin Man", "Get Out of Denver", "Turn The Page" and "Katmandu" ... what a performer, unbelievable cd. Always gets me going and tunes I never get tired of. Long live Bob!

After more than 10 years working the Midwest club circuit, Detroit's Bob Seger hit mainstream American paydirt with this distillation of working-class values and juke-joint rock & roll. His regional success had been brewing throughout the mid-'70s, but after Bruce Springsteen connected with Born to Run (copping Seger's traditional rock values, to say nothing of his husky tone), it was only a matter of time before Seger found his ticket. Seger scores here with the nostalgic title track, the somber ballad "Mainstreet," the over-tanked rocker "Rock 'n' Roll Never Forgets," and the raunch standard "The Fire Down Below." --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Sounds from the past.......2007-01-03

Brings back those moments from high school and all the fun we were having. A great addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Gem.......2007-01-02

I remember first listening to FM album oriented rock n roll when the Night Moves lp was released. My first impression as a teenager was gosh that Night Moves song is so darn slow with overly repetitive chords. Mainstreet left me with a somewhat better impression. However rockers like The Fire Down Below, Come To Poppa, and Rock N Roll Never Forgets always had a hold on me. Somehow though the overplayed title track kept me from digging further into this LP.

Years passed and I began to appreciate Live Bullet- both the ballads and the rockers. I realized that Bob Seger certainly put out some great tunes. Some of his more modern stuff was a little hit and miss but overall the man was a talented songwriter as his words are really touching.

Since I absolutely love the cool edgy blues oriented Fire Down Below, I had to give this Night Moves CD another listen this time with more mature ears. I realized that these nine songs are all very good to excellent. Yes, I even like the slow moving Night Moves as the subject matter I can certainly relate to and carries a certain mysterious air. Most notably, the blend from fast to slow and different dynamics make the Night Moves CD very special.

I guess the lesson learned here is to always keep an open mind and one's appreciation for music is always evolving.

4 out of 5 stars Remastered?.......2006-05-23

This is a great album. The only complaint I have is the remastering. About 2/3 through the song "Night Moves" there is a worbling in and out that sticks out like a sore thumb. It made me cringe. It sounded like a worn out cassette tape. I could've made a CD from an LP that would have sounded better than that mess. To me, it ruined the song. I'll have to listen from the greatest hits I suppose.

4 out of 5 stars Seger's best work.......2004-02-28

This album is simply a killer. Bob Seger in those days was playing raw, essential rock and roll at its best.

There's not a loser on this whole album, but the title song is a must hear. And "The Fire Down Below" is the one of the best workouts a Telecaster will ever get. It's a smoking, hook-filled, howling rock masterpiece. Seger outdid himself on this album and never again reached this high water mark.

Don't miss out on Night Moves.

Few artists last long in the rarefied terrain occupied by singer Lisa Gerrard over the last quarter-century. She shares a passion with composers like Arvo Pärt in the unrelenting pursuit of the divine. In fact, Gerrard evokes Pärt a few times on The Silver Tree, her first non-collaborative solo release since The Mirror Pool in 1995. The Silver Tree is an album of ancient echoes, ghostly refrains, and hymns to the heavens. On "Abwoon," she intones the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, orchestrating her own voice in choral harmonies that unfold beneath her like winds on waves. But "Spaceweaver" sends chills through the soul as Gerrard unlocks this peculiar nasal, back-of-the-throat snarl that she only adopts on such tracks, with a menacing blues groove that recalls "Meltdown" from her score to The Insider. You can hear much of Gerrard's soundtrack work mirrored here: "The Sea Whisperer" picks up at the spirit-affirming end of "Now We Are Free" from Gladiator. And I suspect that the 10-minute opus "Towards the Tower" might be her rejected overture for the film Constantine. With Ligeti-like voices, suspended glissando strings, and ominous percussion shifts, it certainly would work in the cinematic context of a supernatural thriller. The album has been available for half a year in Australia (worldwide via digital download), so as a bonus, the American release tacks on a bonus track, "Entry." Its thudding electronic drum loop and sketchy vocal makes for a disruptive exit. But until you get there, The Silver Tree is an embracing experience. Whether singing Aramaic, English, or that language of her imagination, Lisa Gerrard makes the most heavenly music heard on earth--and maybe beyond. --John Diliberto

Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson were both consummate performers, comfortable at any tempo, when they met for this 1957 recording, and they're clearly enjoying one another's skills on ballads and uptempo tunes alike. The group is one of the finest editions of Peterson's trios, with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. It's virtually a machine for quiet swing, and the absence of a drummer lets Getz's silky sound come to the fore with all its details intact. For all his fame as a virtuosic pianist, Peterson is an underrated accompanist. He complements a soloist with deft fills and unobtrusive propulsion, and the backgrounds he supplies here are as subtle as his solos are extroverted. The program is a good mix of standards and Getz originals, including the joyous "Tour's End," while the extended ballad medley could define jazz lyricism. There's also a brief but infectious version of Ellis's "Detour Ahead," the guitarist's early and highly successful foray into songwriting. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Great - The Best of the Best.......2007-01-27

There are so many superlatives about this album. The first thing one new to the Peterson trio may notice is the lack of drums. And yet, the trio swings so hard that it's very easy to forget. Getz's soft, gentle tone on sax makes a stark but highly effective foil to Peterson's high-energy keyboard acrobatics and staggering virtuosity. The bass and guitar hold everything together transparently, working together in perfect syncronization during the solos, to keep the energy at a proper pitch at all times, then peeling off to do their own magic when it's their turn to solo. The speedy opening cut, "I Want to Be Happy", constantly pops with surprises and new textures. Often, I'll play it twice in a row because it's so much fun to listen to. This album is top jazz musicians at the top of their game.

"This is one of the enjoyable recordings I've ever made. How refreshing is it to play with these pros." ~ Stan Getz ~

"This memorable session was Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson's first and only meeting in the recording studio as co-leaders. Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson Trio remains a most satisfying collaboration and is presented here - in its entirety - for the first time." ~ Nat Hentoff ~

Stan Getz with Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis and Ray Brown? Yes, indeed, on this CD! The group will utterly delight you with their outstanding performances. While I tremendously enjoyed this CD in its entirety, the part I love most is the ballad medley, which the group perfectly performed. I believe this medley is the crowning glory of this album. It's so beautiful that I can just put track #3 on a repeat mode and forget the rest of the tracks! What a brilliant idea to do a medley of all these songs so meaningful to me. This medley alone is worth the price of the CD. The songs and its respective soloists are as follow.

"Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered" - Stan Getz, tenor sax
"I Don't Know Why, I Just Do" - Herb Ellis, guitar
"How Long Has This Been Going On" - Oscar Peterson, piano
"I Can't Get Started" - Ray Brown, bass
"Polka Dots And Moonbeams" - Stan Getz, tenor sax

Also one of my favorites tunes here is "I'm Glad There Is You." Stan Getz's genius shows in every note of this superb and melodic track, and Herb Ellis plays his guitar in a very creative fashion. This is one of the most sublime and notable instrumental versions of all-time. It starts off artistically with Ellis' guitar then Getz joins in slightly overpowering Ellis' guitar to make the most enchanting mix of sax and guitar simultaneously, then comes that gorgeous "solo showdown" between Getz and Ellis. It's so beautiful! I listened to it with a few repeats.

Stan Getz can swing, too! Just listen closely to "I Want To Be Happy," "Pennies From Heaven," "Three Little Words" and his very own "Blues For Herky" and "Tour's End." He plays his favorite instrument effortlessly with ease, precision and virtuosic flair.

When jazz greats get together for a gig, the result is one fantastic album such as this.

    An enjoyable musical journey.

5 out of 5 stars Great rythym section.......2006-11-04

As a jazz guitar player, i personally love stan getz, and to hear him with ray brown, one of my favorite and greatest bass players ever. This was also the first i have listened to Herb Ellis play, his parts are a bit quiet but hey all guitarist were quiet until Charlie Christian. All in Four Really great musicians playing together, if you like this , check out russell malone, ray brown and monty alexander's Cd.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Ellis & Ray Brown: Rhythm Machine.......2006-10-04

I love this recording, and all the other reviews have discussed the many reasons why it is so great. I just want to mention something that Herb Ellis said about playing with Ray Brown. Herb said that Ray's bass playing made him feel like he was being physically lifted up and carried along by some super-strong giant. Mr. Brown is the model of powerful swing - massive, deep tone, atomic sense of time. On this (and other) OPT recordings you can hear him lift-'n-carry the whole band.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-08-09

This is hands-down, the best jazz album I've ever owned. Whether sitting in front of the speakers with eyes closed, absorbing every note, or using it as unobtrusive (but swingin') background music while I work, this album shines.

If you're an audio snob who expects every last KHz of treble to be there, you will be dissappoined. The audio quality is only on par with a good cassette tape, but the music more than makes up for it.
