Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Minute By Minute - 'Long Hot Night' (Angel Air).......2007-01-19

Formed in 1987,by musicians guitarist Ray Fenwick and bassist Polle Eduard. The two had previously worked with Dutch bands After Tea and Tee Set. They're joined up for the making of this effort with Focus guitarist Jan Akkerman, drummer Cozy Powell(R.I.P.), sax player Candy Dulfer and vocalist Lisa Boray. I haven't been able to find even one other person who remotely remembers this 'adult pop-oriented' ensemble (in other words,this CD is a title our parents might enjoy). Tunes here that are semi-worth mentioning are the title track "Long Hot Night", the somewhat inspiring "Short Avenue", the well written pop-like "Black&Blue" and the funky "Three Times Your Age". Check it out for yourself, if you like.

Steve Ross has such an affinity with Cole Porter that no less an authority than Michael Feinstein said he couldn't begin to approach Ross's "perfect rendition" of "Can Can." That song is only one of the 25 Porter tunes both familiar and unfamiliar collected on this 1996 album, Close. Like fellow cabaret legend Bobby Short, Ross doesn't have the most beautiful singing instrument, but he has an expert way around a lyric, and his piano accompaniments are perfect ("I Get a Kick Out of You" is only one example). If you happen to like New York cabaret, you'll happen to like Steve Ross. --David Horiuchi

Steve Ross is the ultimate performer when it comes to Cole Porter's songs. He's such a gifted piano player, has a lovely voice, and his arrangements are so perfect you want to crank up the volume and belt out the tune yourself. He has such sensitivity and emotion, knows just when to change tempo or syncopate a beat. I've driven many miles to see him perform and I'd love to do it again. He's the best, and this album is his finest. Absolute perfection.

Most of these songs are familiar, but Steve Ross' unusual capacity to clarify lyrics with his voice, his enunciation, and even his piano accompaniment combine to bring out the wit and sophistication of these songs in ways that are new and utterly delightful (not to mention delovely). Altogether enjoyable.

Steve Ross is without doubt one of the finest cabaret artists currently working, and this recording amply proves his talent. Steve takes loving stroll through the Porter canon, embellishing each song with his own brand of wit and sensitivity. His excellence as a pianist and knowing way with a lyric make for a superb listen. Every track is a superlative example of Steve's artistry. Not to be missed.
