close to Zappa in spirit.......2006-02-17

This Eskalation CD is the only CD i own that, when a song from it comes up on my iPod shuffle, i usually ponder, "Now what Zappa album is this from?" Eskalation reminds me of a lot of Zappa's music - the songs with complex key and ryhthm changes, as well as his Synclavier recordings. If you like jazz that pushes the limits from rhythms to arrangements, you'll be tickled by Eskalation!

Full title: 'Different Music For Bassoon, Wind Synthesizer And Sampled Percussion'. German musician Stephan Kohr more or less IS Eskalation. From what I've been able to find out, Kohr is a bassoon specialist. Never even knew there was such a thing. All ten cuts on 'Diferent Music...' were entirely composed and recorded using bassoons, samples, wind controlled synthesizers and keyboards. Boy, JUST when I think I've heard it all. The only way I could even begin to describe this disc is progressive experimental. Kohr has reportedly played in several Avant Garde and fusion bands before. If you like artists / composers such as Art Zoyd, Magma, Wendy Carlos or Univers Zero, then give 'Different...' a shot. It's decent.

A must-buy for fans of Univers Zero or Art Zoyd or lovers of unusual musical experiences. Imagine Daniel Denis meets Kit Watkins (in his prog phase). Although most of the music is played by a single guy, it actually sounds like a quartet. Especially the drum and percussion programming is incredible lively and doesn't sound like "out of the box". Stephan Koehr succeeds in combining acoustic and electronic sounds in a very natural way providing surprising changes in timbre and mood in every piece. No song is like the other.

Finally, this has become one of my all-time-favorites. If you are interested in something really different in the way of advanced instrumental prog rock, then you should absolutely give this CD a try!!
