When I listen to Swing out Sister.......2007-02-22
I gave in to Amazon's insistance that people who liked Basia also like Swing out Sister. OK, but there are big differences. Give any student of progressive jazz any recording of Basia with Matt Bianco and they will be blown away. The chord progressions, rythmn, and sophistication of the music is a delight. Matt Bianco is a musician's musician.
Swing out Sister is studio music. The synth stuff doesn't work well on a good system. You Ipod lovers won't notice. No wonder their live stuff sounds thin. They overtrack, overdub, and synthesize their way to a very big sound. It actually sounds close to real in the Where our Love Grows release, but in the tracks from the 80s, it is glaringly artificial. But then, I have a 10k high definition stereo. Never mind.
That said, I love this music. It is danceable, uplifting and addictive. I'll take Corinne's voice over Basia--more pleasant. It takes a certain taste. If you like the samples buy and you'll feel like you've made a great discovery, and you have.

A must have !.......2002-12-01
Well, many years have gone by and I had been thinking about getting that album on cd for myself, after having worn out my tape copy. Then, I decided to get this one. I found it to be a real collection of their finest moments. The journey takes you from 1985 to 1994, and contains several (slightly edited) tracks of their most famous tunes from their stellar album. There is a clear change of style midway through this album, mainly due to line-up changes of the band throughout the years. However, I must say I was not disappointed by those tracks I had never heard before, except for track 16, an ear breaker. For instance, you have a very soul Curtis Mayfield / Marvin Gaye type of atmosphere on track 12. Track 13 has that happy feeling and rythm that makes you want to tap your feet on the floor. Track 14, a mid tempo with a jazzy touch, could be played in any of those elegant bars in major capitals around the world. The closer, a brilliant 3 minute instrumental, has a sort of romantic Parisian-like atmosphere that also brings back special memories to me...
If you like British-like pop soul with "elegant" touches, unfortunately unfit for the US market, this is an album for you. The Japanese apparently love this band. Swing Out sister might make you think a bit about Matt Bianco (same era) or Working Week, or even Nick Heyward. If you like these artists, you will also like this cd. It's a great quality pop album, and a good compilation.
Now, my next move is to get "It's better to travel" on cd...
Martini's & Bikini's.......2001-12-30
Being a fan of this wonderful duo ( which actually began as a trio! ) I'll certainly do my part to sing their praises. The release of " Breakout " is an import compilation that includes not only their biggest hit to date," Breakout " but also a host of other songs that, while they may not seem recognizable at first, will soon become so. Highlight's for me include, " Am I the Same Girl ", " Notgonnachange " and " Blue Mood ", the last being an infectious bluesy number that I'm listening to right now. Heck, half the fun in owning this disc is finding out which tunes you like best! SOS's forte in writing tunes is simply putting together wonderful melodies with insightful lyrics and a spice of smooth jazz and R&B thrown in for good measure. This is truly Britpop at it's very best and, other than Lisa Stansfield, I can think of no other group that performs this style of music any better than SOS. And while I'm sure some listener's may consider this style a little too slick and contemporary for their taste that may be the reason I enjoy this band as much as I do. The entire disc carries a slightly nightclub/martini aura about it that feels just right. They don't pretend to anything other than what they set out to do....and I find that terribly refreshing.
In ending, if you prefer your music slightly jazzy with a 'pop' sensibility than please give Swing Out Sister a try. I've given this disc away as gifts on several occassions and the recipients never fail to tell me how thrilled they are with this 'new group' SOS! Well, who am I to ruin their fun! So run and pick up your copy of " Breakout " and soon you'll be a true trend setter in your neighborhood. And, with... pricing this disc at a budget rate, than you've no excuse as to why your not at home, listening to SOS, and dancing around your living room floor, singing with sheer abandonment. Just make sure you put something on when step out of that shower! Thanks

All the singers on the album have soulpower.......2006-08-12
Soulive is formed by Neal Evans, Alan Evans and Eric Krasno together with a horn section consisting of Rashawn Ross and Ryan Zoldis. The vocalists on "Break Out" are Chaka Khan, Reggie Watts, Ivan Neville, and Corey Glover. There are fifteen tracks on the album including three interludes and four instrumentals. The music from Soulive is not soul for softies. The guys are here to play and once they got the soul engine started they keep it running until the end in interlude III. Guest musicians like Robert Randolph and percussionist Danny Sandownick fully contribute to the music.
In their guitar playing Soulive might remind you of the Isley Brothers who fully used guitars too back in the 70-ies. Another example of their love for guitar you'll hear in the beautiful cover of the 1968 version of crosstown traffic from guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. In between this funky rocking soul music you'll get some cool latin sounds as well like in the song cachaca. All the singers on the album have soulpower which is an essential part of Soulive.
top 20 on my ipod.......2006-08-02
It's Soulive but not as ALIVE as they can be.......2006-02-21
Perhaps this is due to the higher production values on the record, which are very clean but not as raw and visceral as on Turn It Out. Also, the guest vocals are pleasant, and there are some quite happy multi-instrumental jams on show, but for me this all is gloss over what I really want - Soulive jamming it hard as a 3 piece and letting the juices flow!
I suppose the best way to experience this is to see the band live, so if they are in your town get some tickets straight away!
I'm still in love with this band, although this album doesn't give me the kick I get from some of their earlier work. This CD is growing on me though, as it reveals sophisticated depths...
Give it some patience, and this becomes a mellow treat. It might not get you freaking out on the underground as you listen to it on your iPod though...
p.s. That is a reference to me listening to Turn It Out on the London Underground. Can't help going crazy to Soulive!)

A review of Spyro Gyra's Breakout........2003-04-28
My top 3 favorite songs on the album wuold have to be 1,3, and 4. Bob Goes To The Store is a great song featuring an awesome bass solo in it. Doubletake is good and Jay does some great playing in it. Breakout is an upbeat, fast, and energizing song. It does well at displaying the groups obvious talent. Every song on here is admirable.
This cd is underrated. It is good and deserves more praise of it. Believe me, I know my Spyro Gyra. You should purchase this album. You might just happen to love it as much as I do. Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.

Breakout the funk.......2002-06-27
The first Kudu release, "Breakout" was cut by organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith, a player out of the Jimmy Smith school with a reputation for putting out solid soul jazz. For his first outing with the label, Hammond was joined by CTI veterans alto saxophonist Hank Crawford, session guitarist extraordinare Eric Gale (later a member of the R&B band Stuff) percussionist Airto Moreira and Billy Cobham on drums. Rounding out the cast are trumpeter Danny Moore, bassist Johnny Williams and a hot newcomer on tenor saxophone named Grover Washington, Jr.
"It's Too Late", a Carole King hit, contains a great chart from Grover and some nice playing from all concerned at a slow boiling, greasy medium tempo funk groove. Hammond's chordal work is nice, and exquisitely funky, and he brings forth a nice heated solo, as does Washington. Billy Cobham works in some nice double time throughout for each soloist. Neil Sadaka's "Workin On a Groovy Thing" is treated as a straight ahead swinger, Hammond's lines quick, fleeting and bluesy, Grover Washington delivers another fine solo turn, his phrases earthy with a boppish tinge. His command of the tenor here is wonderful, proving that there was a time when he was blowing with fire and substance.
Hank Crawford is well featured on the ballad "Never Can Say Goodbye", an R&B hit of the time. Arranger Leo Johnson provides a slick horn chart, and Crawford rises to the occasion with a sultry improvisation, displaying a huge, vocal, gospel inflected tone honed through his years with Ray Charles. Cobham keeps a nice steady beat and Hammond again lays down some funky chords. "Blues Selah" penned by Johnson, is a funky shuffle blues with everyone really loosening up. Hammond and Washington in particular vibrant form. Johnny's solo is bursting with cleverness and some nice funky right hand chords. "Breakout", the original album closer is a nasty, sweaty groove laden blues, with the spotlight on Hammond. Behind Gale's relentless stream of funk riffs and Cobham's strong push, Hammond's ideas of very reminiscent of Jimmy Smith, right hand trills and a drone pattern mark a strong final spot for Johnny. Grover Washington plays with strength and power, leaving the door wide open for Crawford as the tune fades.
A bonus unreleased live version of "It's Too Late" recorded at the Hollywood Palladium in July, 1971 with the CTI All Stars closes the disc. Weighing in at 16:18, it is superior to the studio version in feeling and energy. An added plus is due to the presence of George Benson taking Gale's spot. Benson's much greater technical facility brings a greater fluidness and funkiness to his lines that is a real treat. Benson's solo slowly gains heat as Hammond pulls all stops out* and riffs feverishly behind George. Hammond's solo is remarkable in it's intensity and pacing. He begins with sly bluesy lines, slowly working up to a roaring crescendo with all stops out, using incessently funky riffs and drone patterns. The sound of his organ is much dirtier with his Leslie speaker in overdrive. The tension doesn't end, it is picked up by Cobham with a flashy drum solo. Hammond restates the melody closing the tune, barely letting the raucous crowd catch it's breath. The first time on CD and remastered in excellent 24 bit sound, "Breakout" is recommended to fans who love funk, R&B and soul jazz. Purists should steer clear, this is simple soul satisfying stuff, no tricky stuff here.
*all stops out- an effect achieved by pulling all the organ's drawbars out, creating a pipe organ like sound.
personnel tracks 1-5: Johnny "Hammond" Smith (hammond b-3 organ), Hank Crawford (alto sax) Grover Washington, Jr (tenor sax) Danny Moore (trumpet) Johnny Williams (fender electric bass) Airto Moreira (percussion) Eric Gale (guitar) Billy Cobham (drums)
personnel track 6: Johnny "Hammond" Smith (hammond b-3 organ) George Benson (guitar) Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) Stanley Turrentine (tenor sax), Hank Crawford (alto sax) Airto Moreira (percussion) Billy Cobham (drums)
A soul-jazz classic.......2002-05-16
Although Johnny did other albums after this one, he never was able to recapture the greatness of Breakout, which isn't too far in style from his classic Prestige dates (all of which are highly recommended for soul-jazz fans, particularly "That Good Feeling", which is one of the best soul-jazz recordings ever released.) Johnny did not get as much press as some of the other organ players, but he was a virtuoso, and he never made a bad album including and prior to "Breakout". Although he passed a few years ago, I feel that someday Johnny's gonna get his due as the musical genius that he was. Get "Breakout" right away, you won't regret it.
Absolutely great Hammond!.......2002-03-06

Album Description
Guitarist El McMeen "breaks out" into some new musical directions with this 2002 solo guitar release. In addition to his trademark lyrical treatment of melodic pieces, this disc contains powerful renditions of three original compositions, and some uptempo dance tunes, and even a medley of pop tunes made famous by such groups as the Four Tops and the Temptations.Customer Reviews:
El McMeen Breaks Out!.......2002-11-14
Those coming to this CD expecting to hear El's trademark Celtic and hymn tune arrangements will not be disappointed. And even here, El "breaks out" by revisiting some previously recorded tunes and updating them to reflect his current musical sensibilities. The beautiful Star of the County Down, for example, appears here as a waltz, hornpipe, and jig (compare to El's version on Solo Guitar Serenade). And the normally sprightly Carolan's No. 179 is recast here as a slow and reflective love song (compare to El's version on Irish Guitar Encores).
Other "traditional" music highlights include MacDonnell on the Heights/Hector the Hero, a powerful tribute to the victims and heroes of September 11; a haunting and lyrical rendition of Greensleeves; an arrangement of Shenandoah, a tour de force in which El uses just the chordal framework of this well-known tune to showcase his considerable improvisational skills; and Give Me Jesus, a beautiful gospel song that reinforces El's affinity for and extraordinary ability to render hymn tunes into classic solo-guitar arrangements.
While each of these pieces represents El at his best, a standout in this category is the extraordinarily difficult Turf Lodge, a Scottish pipe jig, the performance of which would strike terror into the heart of any guitarist. El, however, carries this piece off flawlessly, demonstrating the virtuosity that lies behind all of his playing, but that really shines through in this showcase piece. (I've seen El perform this piece live, and believe me, there is no studio "trickery" going on here!) El claims to have been ruminating on this piece for 17 years, and after listening to this astonishing performance, one can easily see why.
The remainder of the CD most clearly presents El in "breakout" mode as composer and arranger. El's original tunes are surprisingly and refreshingly different from anything previously heard from him. The driving Le Mans suggests the urgent and breathless quality of a high-stakes race. Song for Sheila, dedicated to El's wife of more than 30 years, is a tender and lushly romantic piece worthy of comparison to the best romantic themes. And Breakout, which gives the CD it's title, has an immediately likable melody that increases in appeal as El takes it through a characteristically virtuoso development.
Arranging pop tunes is not a new endeavor for El, but the quality of the arrangements here-and the choice of songs-raises these pieces to the breakout level. A big fan of "Motown," El seamlessly combines three classics-My Girl, Stand by Me, and It's the Same Old Song-into a medley that not only does full justice to the originals, but also, as in the best of arrangements, transforms them into something new and uniquely original. And, with the delightfully unexpected Over the Rainbow, El has instinctively recognized a lyrical quality perfectly suited to the solo guitar and treats this well-worn film score tune with a sensitivity and delicacy that makes it seem as if we are hearing it for the first time.
Perhaps the highest compliment that I can pay to this CD is that I immediately liked every track, and that with each listening, the depth of El's accomplishment continues to unfold and yield more and more pleasure and more and more to explore and appreciate. El considers this CD a watershed event for him; I completely agree. You'll want to get this one, and listen to it many, many times. I can assure you that even in the largest CD collection, this disk will never gather dust. It's a classic sure to be listened to again and again for many years to come.
