Album Description

It's the harmonies that draw you in. The big, lush, gorgeous harmonies. You're hooked and it's then that you realize that it's not just the harmonies. Everything about Little Big Town is unique to the country music world. Comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, Little Big Town's configuration of two men and two women is unique. Also unique is that there is no single lead vocalist all four take on lead vocal responsibilities. Little Big Town's voices blend so effortlessly one would think they'd been singing together since childhood. While that isn't quite true, their backgrounds are strikingly similar. All four band members began singing in church and with their families and Phillip even performed in a family band. Each then blossomed in their craft during college, a career as a professional musician the clear path for each. Equity. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Great Musicianship and Awesome Vocals!!!!.......2007-06-19

This album is a real gem! I first was exposed to this group through watching them do "Good As Gone" on Nashville Star last season. Prior reviews which criticize their similarity to Fleetwood Mac are really unfair to both LBT and Fleetwood Mac. Yes, they were definitely influenced by Fleetwood Mac, but they are extremely talented in their own right! The vocal talent and musicianship is first rate!

My one criticism (which is minor) involves a certain similarity of the first three songs on the album. In other words, there is a very similar vibe in a number of songs such as Good As Gone, Boondocks, and Bones...(Tryin' to Find A Reason - also similar vibe - is later in the album song order).

There is some great guitar work which includes some very impressive Dobro work from Jerry Douglas. This album is definitely worth getting!

4 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Gold.......2007-05-21

Like Ray Charles used to say, "Country music artist tell great stories." I'm slowly becoming more of a contemporary country fan. And I stress; contemporary. The first time I heard 'Bring it on Home, I thought, "I kind of like that song." A good friend let me listen to the CD and I was hooked. 'The Road to Here,' is a fun piece of work; welcome to the family!

3 out of 5 stars It's all good visiting Little Big Town.......2007-05-15

Okay, so I'm totally re-writing & re-submitting my rating of this album. I went to a "Little Big Town" Concert and was blown away. They were incredible and I own them a huge apology for only giving them three stars the first time around. The harmonies were amazing...so, I've gone back and listened to the album & deemed myself delerious in relation to my first review. The four singers are perfectly balanced and the songs are fun. No wonder they won big Country Music Awards for this album. So, ignore my first rating and buy the album.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-05-14

Great CD! And they are just as good live in concert! I recommend it. Balance between slow songs and upbeat songs.

4 out of 5 stars Great music for a non-country fan!.......2007-05-09

I purchased this CD because I heard some of their songs on TV while browsing through channels. Although considered a country group, their music has a Fleetwood Mac sound to it. I never thought I'd purchase a country CD, but Little Big Town has changed my mind about the genre. Great harmony and great musicians!

This debut album by the small-town girl with the big, powerhouse voice showcases two distinctly different sides of Kellie Pickler's music. The hard-riffing uptempo material recalls the heartland rock of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp, with Pickler providing a good-ole-girl twang. Among the highlights are the emancipated strut of "Red High Heels," the playful humor of "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind," and the tomboy bluesiness of "One of the Guys." Yet the American Idol finalist turns pure diva on the over-the-top balladry of the album's other half, with swelling strings and arrangements that overpower rather than enhance "I Wonder" and "I'm on My Way." On such cuts, producer Blake Chancey (Dixie Chicks) never gives Pickler a chance to show the subtlety and nuance that makes music more an art than a competition. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kellie Pickler, a small town girl.......2007-07-19

Kellie was super on American Idol. On the tour she cowrote a number of songs that are on her album. She wrote about her life back in this small town in the Carolina's where she grew up. Her mother had left her, her father is in prison, so she has a lot to write about. Her grandmother died when Kellie was 15, Kellie wrote a song about her and called it her "Angel". "I Wonder" she also helped write,it is about her mother who left her when she was 2. The video is a real tear jerker and makes you wonder what is wrong with her mother. If you do not buy any other cd's buy Kellies, you will never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2007-07-16

Saw Kelly in concert when she opened for Brad Paisley. Loved her and loved her stuff. If you're a country music lover, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Kellie Pickler is on her way!.......2007-07-06

Well on her way! What a pleasant surprise this cd is! I think I prefer this cd to that of the other blonde country girl from AI. Kellie Pickler's music is lighter and sunnier and I find her actually more interesting and easier to relate to. This cd is the one that comes to my mind when I think of a backyard barbecue in the summer or when driving down the highway with the wind in your hair.

Being born and bred on the west coast I'm naturally averse to too much twang, but that is not a problem at all here. Several songs on the album are pure fun (Red High Heels, Things That Never Cross A Man's Mind, One Of The Guys) and the sweet, Dolly Parton-like sound of her voice is perfect for them. Many of the songs have a rock edge that appeals to someone like me who grew up on rock and roll in the 1980s. Girls Like Me and I'm On My Way are moving songs that are instant classics. Listen to I Wonder and see if you don't become a lifelong Kellie Pickler fan in a minute. Can anyone actually listen to this song with dry eyes?

On a side note, I am disheartened at some of the negative things that have been said about Ms. Pickler. Her early life may have been less than perfect, but that is certainly no fault of hers. To hold it against her in any way is cruel and unfair. It is a testament to her strength and her abilities that she has been able to come as far as she has given her less-than-ideal circumstances. Who is more praiseworthy--the one who is born with every advantage and achieves greatness or the one who is born with some disadvantages and achieves greatness?

In sum, this is overall a very impressive body of work that I never expected from a girl who got voted off AI. I admit that I underestimated her.

Now I just can't wait until her next cd comes out. Way to go Kellie!

5 out of 5 stars Dreams do come true.......2007-06-29

She's from NC, she's a blonde, and she loves shoes! How can you not love Kellie Pickler! Just another reason to love country music - real people singing real songs...

Little Big Town's hook is their four-part harmony, and as hooks go, this one is pretty terrific. There are moments so pretty and folky and sweet they almost sound like Crosby, Stills, and Nashville. And the fine wall-of-mostly-acoustic-sound, while at times a little overloaded with drums and unnecessary instrumentation, generally serves their efforts to penetrate a market that is at present a little bloated with music that lacks essential nutrients. To their credit, the band wrote nearly all the tunes on their debut CD, and, even more laudable, they have chosen to swap lead vocals, risking audience confusion and the lack of instant recognition that comes with letting one member run the spotlight. If Little Big Town stand their ground, earn some character, and occasionally risk a little less production, they may mature into a fine addition to the vocal harmony tradition. --Henry Cabot Beck

I PURCHASED THIS CD AFTER THEIR MASH CD WITH SEVERAL HITS. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE JUST AS MUCH. I WISH THAT I HAD KNOWN THIS ONE WAS OUT FIRST, BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE HOW THEY HAVE GROWN WITH THEIR SING VOICES AS WELL AS A MUSIC GROUP BETWEEN THE TWO.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Group.......2006-08-24

Little Big Town is comprised of the members Kimberly Roads, Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook and Phil Sweet. This group has a really unique sound. The music is country-pop, but what makes it special are the harmonies that this quartet makes together. A lot of the songs have a positive sound. Highlights include "Everything Changes", "Stay", "Still", "Never Felt Love", and more. Overall the whole cd is great!

The Jayhawks' breakthrough album is a roots rock classic. "Like folk music, but really loud," is how guitarist Gary Louris liked to describe the Jayhawks, but the reality is more complex--try the country-rock sound of the Flying Burrito Brothers, Neil Young, or the Band married to white-boy soul, bar band rawness, and a slight alternative edge. Hollywood Town Hall is a masterpiece of American songwriting, blending irresistible melodies, ringing guitars, and Louris and Olson's gorgeous harmonies with moody, imagery-rich lyrics. Best cuts: "Waiting for the Sun," "Take Me with You (When You Go)."

Amazon.com

Because the Jayhawks' lyrics are more interested in expressing a mournful mood than in evoking any specific emotion, and since their strengths are searing guitar solos and cathartic, Gram Parsons-influenced harmonies, it makes sense their best album would come when they teamed with a producer (George Drakoulias) who could make all that sorrowful noise come to life. Hollywood Town Hall is such a sonic marvel, in fact, that even the new version of the beautiful, if vague, "Two Angels" (repeated from their earlier album Blue Earth) sounds less a retread than a revelation. Though still obscure, like everything here it sounds breathtaking. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Jayhawks - Pleasent Americana Roots Rock.......2007-06-04

I don't really remember how I got into this band since it is not really the type of stuff that I normally listen too, but somewhere along the line I picked up this and another one of their albums and still enjoy them quite a bit. I guess I would categorize the Jayhawks as American roots rock. There are elements of folk, country, and rock to be found in their material along with tight vocal harmonies the occasional blistering guitar solo. They are not a band that blew me away upon first listen, but over time I grew to enjoy what they do. Highlights of the disc include "Waiting For The Sun", "Two Angels", "Take Me With You When You Go", and "Nevada California". This is not an album I pull out often, and I have to be in the right mood, but I do enjoy it when I give it an occasional listen.

5 out of 5 stars One of my few favorites..........2006-12-22

This is my favorite record of all time. It's like a story that takes you from chapter to chapter with such amazing songstyling and vocal harmonies, All I really want to say about it, is that you are really missing out if you do not experience Hollywood Town Hall. The stuff that they do now is also very good, but here you have them in their heyday with both Olson and Louris bouncing harmonies off eachother - amazingly beautiful. They Jays also defy being labeled, so in order to explain them to my friends, I say that they are like alt.country + roots rock + power pop + a little bluegrass and a little honkytonk thrown in there too. While still being dynamically beautiful. Just listen to it even though I sound like a raving lunatic, we give the best reccomendations anyhow.

4 out of 5 stars the jayhawks are a great band.......2006-02-28

it says it right on the the sticker they put on the cd "the jayhawks are an astonishingly(sp?) easy band to love." it is true. they are a great band they are my second favorite band right behind tom petty & the heartbreakers. i love this cd it is not their best(tomorrow the green grass and rainy day music are both better). but this album is still about as close to perfect as a band can get. the song "clouds" has one of my favorite opening lines of any song "the God of the rich ain't the God for the poor..." also the song "settled down like rain" is just fantastic and is probably my favorite song of all time. i am very suprised no one else has mentioned this song. they tend to single out "take me with you(when you go)", "waiting for the sun", and "nevada, california" which are all great songs but still not as good as "settled..." basically this album is great and i can't imagine anybody not enjoying it. it is a classic one of the best albums i own.

5 out of 5 stars On of the Top 10 albums of all time........2005-07-31

My favorite album. Every song is perfect and listening to it always takes me back to the days when nothing really mattered but the music.

5 out of 5 stars Drive and listen.......2005-07-19

The first few times through, this CD made little impression on me. Then, I really listened to it. I was on a road trip, it was a CD I picked up on the way out the door, but it and Buddy Miller's _Universal United House of Prayer_ were the only ones I played. And both were worth the time and attention. At least one of these cuts--"Nevada, California," "Waiting for the Sun," or my favorite, "Crowded in the Wings"--will eventually get to you and draw you in. It might take a rainy-day road trip to set the mood, but the Jayhawks will eventually make you glad you listened.

On this 1986 debut, Steve Earle burst on the scene as a fully formed songwriting master, synthesizing effortlessly the finest parts of country-folk troubadours like Townes Van Zandt and the anthemic, working-class rock of Bruce Springsteen. "Someday," a country-rock masterpiece about a kid stuck pumping gas in a dead-end town, remains the perfect realization of this style, and with the exception of the slight and silly "Little Rock 'N' Roller," most everything else here (especially "Hillbilly Highway" and the heartbreaking ballad "My Old Friend the Blues") comes awfully close. The 2002 reissue, overseen by Earle and original producer Tony Brown, offers fresh remastering, new liner notes by Earle, and a bonus live version of Springsteen's "State Trooper." --David Cantwell

Steve Earl is a force in American Music that is not just Folk, Rock, Country, or Pop.
Hard to get to get air play. Like Mary Gauthier, Lucinda Williams, and Anne McCue; a radio programmer's nightmare. This is good though because these artists stand pat and do not bend with the dollar.

5 out of 5 stars 2ND TRY...........2007-03-03

Buy it, you will not regret it and have a brand new hero. So to speak. Anyway, I was at a NYE Party in 1988 and a radio station gave this to host who gave it to me. Could not have been more lucky. Now I have most all SE had out. I was only 23 yrs old at time, newly married and in military (NOTHING CHANGED) and we both still buy anything SE has out. He has been thru alot, also. Listen to this mans voice and what he is putting out to there....just on the initial albumn and you will be hooked. my husband bought me new SE albumns (CD's) for my birthdays. Right on. Check out "THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW" also. Also read up on Steve Earle, anyone who can appreciate music, folk, alt country, bluegrass, etc need to check this "original" out and see for yourself.
I bought my husband SE, RSN, for Christmas year before last and he was very thankful. Can't say enough to justice to SE. Listen for yourself and be happy.

5 out of 5 stars If "Hillbilly" is a positive for you instead of a dismissive term, you should like it. .......2007-02-23

One of the best written albums of the 1980's. Song after song can grip you, if you know small towns. Earle seemed to be trying too hard in his early years and then went Hollywood after this album hit. This one defines him, not "Copperhead Road." He just wrote very well and accurately on this one. Good strong riffs, well produced, and soulful. All the elements I need for a 5 star rating. This album is comparable to Lucinda Williams's "Car Wheels..." in that it has a unifying theme, is dead-on to the theme, and has great performances. If "Hillbilly" is a positive for you instead of a dismissive term, you should like it. "Nothin ever happens around my home town and I aint the kind to just hang around..."

5 out of 5 stars Five star fabulous!!.......2006-10-01

Dare I say it, this is THE BEST country album that was recorded in the eighties. So naturally, it was largely ignored by the music row jugheads in Nashville forcing our hero to go into the realm of rock music in order to have his talent appreciated. The first six songs on this release are perfect in every way! Anyone who likes vintage Dwight Yoakam, the folkier side of Springsteen or the seventies era of Waylon Jennings should own this!! The title track is marvelous and just a blast to listen to, "Goodbye Is All We Got Left To Say" is one of the best written songs ever and "Hillbilly Highway" will get stuck in your head for days!! Then as if this trio wasn't good enough, then along comes "Gettin' Tough" to knock you upside the head followed by a couple songs later by "Someday" known as the greatest song Springsteen NEVER wrote! If this album isn't a five star, then I don't know what is!! Buy it, love it, live it!! It's that good!!

5 out of 5 stars Much Improved Reissue.......2006-09-03

This is a great album that blurred whatever distinction existed between country and rock, and this guy writes really good country lyrics that aren't the least bit corny or stupid. This and the next album he released, Exit 0, are his best - and in my opinion - two of the finest country albums ever made. There was a big problem though; They were recorded digitally on either very bad equipment, or by someone who was clueless (or both), and the result was very harsh with hardly any bass. Steve got this satisfactorily fixed on Guitar Town by converting the digital tape to analog, and then to DSD, and making the nesessary sonic adjustments before down-converting to 16 bit for the cd. The result is much improved over the original CD, making this great performance more enjoyable.

Incredible ! QUARTER MOON IN A TEN CENT TOWN was, after Elite Hotel and Luxury Liner, the third masterpiece in a row for Emmylou Harris. With this album, she proved to be a singer one had to count with. No weak songs, each of them could have been released as a single. What could I say that hasn't been said by the previous reviewers ? Nothing. This album is perfect.

A CD that should already be in your library.

4 out of 5 stars When she's good, she's great . . ........2006-04-09

I was introduced to Emmylou Harris through her album WRECKING BALL, and this was much different than I expected. THe only tracks that I like are "Two more bottles of wine" - which is loads of fun to listen to, and makes great driving music, "To Daddy" - an old Dolly Parton song, which is classic country fed-up-woman music, and "One Paper Kid" with Willie Nelson - their voices blend beautifully on the recording, and Willie's voice always brings a tear to my eye - I love him. "Travellin' Man" is alright - I just feel that there are a lot of other songs in the same vein out there that are much better. The rest of the songs are just okay, and I didn't find them particularly memorable.

I still really like Emmylou Harris - and the good songs on this album are really great, but I don't think that this was a good "second look" at her work, and I would probably only recommend it to people who are already Emmylou Harris fans.

1 out of 5 stars Emmylou Harris fan!!!.......2006-01-13

Warning: The two bonus tracks are live. The songs are great, but it seems deceptive to me when they are not listed as such. It is industry practice to list on the cover when songs are live. With Emmylous' re-issues so far ( I have two more of the re-issued CD's to open and listen to ) they have been unissued studio recordings.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-08-31

What the "Blue" album is to Joni Mitchell, this album is to Emmylou Harris.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Recording from Her Back Catalogue.......2005-07-12

Not a perfect CD as there some weak spots here, such as "Two More Bottles Of Wine". Not a bad song, but, with this material, it needs to be played loose and rollicking. Instead it comes off as a consummate studio recording. "Burn That Candle" also sounds a bit by the numbers.

But the best material here is excellent. My personal favorite is "Green Rolling Hills", a song that's very effective in evoking the bucolic landscape of West Virginia. Another highlight is "One Paper Kid" in which Willie Nelson helps to add real emotional depth to the song. "My Songbird" and "To Daddy" are gorgeous ballads, even if the material is wistful.

Overall, there's nothing bad on this CD and there are enough highlights to make it a keeper. Also, the two bonus tracks on this reissue really are a bonus (for a change); both are live recordings made shortly after the original CD was released. "New Cut Road", an old Guy Clark song, benefits particularly well from the live setting.

Album Description

This songwriter and mother of four, who lives a stones throw from the town she grew up in, doesn't fit into any stereotype. She's garnered comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Dashboard Confessional, and Roseanne Cash. Her songs, as solid as Georgia oak, are played and sung with an emotional grit under the nails that comes from digging in life's mundane and less illuminated holes. These songs grab you with Lori's signature strident, soulful, and unapologetic vocals sharing earnest observations and stories of growing up and growing old, of loves and losses, winners and losers, guns and god, and drinkers and dreamers in a town that is resting uncomfortably between its blue collar roots and modern suburbia. Incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna speaks of the bitter and the sweet, but doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life, and in turn ours, in word and melody. Meet Lori McKenna and welcome to Bittertown

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Lyrics.......2006-11-22

I went out and purchased Lori McKenna's 'Bittertown' last year after hearing songs she wrote on Faith Hill's 'Fireflies'. This is an incredible album, definitely one of the best that I bought in 2005. She has an interesting voice and beautiful lyrics, particularly on "Bible Song", "Stealing Kisses", "The Ledge" and "Cowardly Lion". While Faith Hill (on "Stealing Kisses" and "If You Ask", etc.) and Sara Evans (on "Bible Song") sing McKenna's songs very well on their latest albums, there's no comparison to the original, though Hill does a great job on 'Fireflies'. McKenna's voice is not at all over the top or showy and it fits the songs she sings in a very pure and simple way. I would highly recommend this album, and others by this artist, to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Living American Singer Songwriter.......2006-06-04

And I say this based on hearing a single song ("Pour") from from a Putumayo World Music collection "American Folk". On that basis, I am going to buy the album, and I hope you will too, she truly deserves it. Emotions are conveyed intimately and harrowingly with a warm and very beautifully real voice, with her special twist and modulation. Lyrics are original, raw, and sometimes surprising with an insight that becomes much more apparent when you hear her sing: "In the depths of the deepest sea, there is a blue as blue as me, where a quiet symphony plays for the lonley, I could just let it all go, sink down to the world below, where i dont breathe but I dont know cause I am breathless" (and then follows a wonderful musical follow up which greatly amplifies the feelings). The music is beautiful, very appropriate, and carefully crafted.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, gritty, and a good listen.......2006-03-30

This is my first Lori McKenna album. While a sample of her songs and the comparisons got my attention, I'd say she compares to herself. She's got a stepped up-bluegrass kind of sound and the gritty, solid voice that made many of country's greats who they are. "Bittertown" is hard to classify and even harder to get out of your CD player. Give it a listen, I think you'll agree Lori's someone whose words are worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite CD for studying!.......2006-01-29

I LOVE this CD. I listen to it often while studying - the album flows wonderfully...I find it hard to compare to anyone else, though I am a big fan of Alison Krauss, the Wailin Jennys, and the like, if that tells you anything.

Buy it! You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2006-01-05

Lori McKenna has a grit to her lyrics and vocals that harken back to the greats of country like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. She also has the sort of lyrical imagery, roughshod vocals and sad songs that beg to be compared to Lucinda Williams. She is all this and more.
The album opens strongly with the driving desperation of small town escape that is "Bible Song," which still manages to pause briefly to show us a moment of her offbeat view of the world when she pauses in the middle of describing her a cousins's suicide to ponder "and how does she explain to those kids about the sorry thing Daddy did." "Stealing Kisses" plays like a prequel to John Prines classic "Angel From Montgomery." However, possibly the strongest moment on the cd is the spectrum spanning tales of addiction "If You Ask" and "Monday Afternoon." Lest you think all is gloom and doom however, McKenna proves she can do the lighter end of the register, with the confectiony sweet "Mr. Sunshine." The only weak note is the immature "Lone Star" but it is lyrically spot on and McKenna takes such relish in advising her old classmate "tell the girls in the beer line/that you're an old, good friend of mine" that it ranks, at worst, as a guitly pleasure.
Lori McKenna is one of the best voices to come on the scene in a long time--both as a singer and a writer.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2006-07-28

Saw these guys at the New Orleans Jazz Fest this year, and the entire crowd was blown away! They are amazing. Chose this CD based on reviews, and was not disappointed. Of course, I can't imagine these guys disappointing me...
Even if you're not a big bluegrass fan, you'll find YMSB draws you in, particularly at their live performances. See them when you can, and when you can't, this CD (along with their others) will tide you over.

5 out of 5 stars Four heads, eight hands, one mind.......2002-11-05

I mentioned in my review of _Elevation_ that these four guys aren't quite going to displace Railroad Earth at the top of my Favorite Band Currently In Existence list, but they're getting mighty close. And I hereby make it official that they've replaced the String Cheese Incident as my second favorite.

Much nearer to "traditional" bluegrass than either of those other two bands (in part because they don't use drums/percussion), the Yonder Mountain String Band plays like one mind with four heads and eight hands. Each of the four (Jeff Austin, mandolin; Ben Kaufman, bass; Adam Aijala, guitar; Dave Johnston, banjo) is just so good, and so in tune with the other three, that they sound as though they could play the phone book, without rehearsal, and make it interesting to listen to.

I mildly (very mildly) prefer _Elevation_ over this one as a recommended YMSB "starter" CD, in part because the songs on _Town By Town_ include a couple of oblique references to tunes from the earlier release. But there's a lot to commend this one as well (and even if you don't get it _first_, don't forget to get it _later_).

Since I especially like Austin's stuff, I'll single out the near-epic "New Horizons" and "Peace of Mind." They're cool enough songs in the first place. But Austin is just manic on that mandolin, and both these tunes give the rest of the band a chance to shine on their extended instrumental breaks. (Pay special attention to Kaufman's bass work on "New Horizons." His playing seems to be informed by a classical/jazz sensibility, which works wonderfully here. I don't mean to ignore Aijala's frenetic flatpicking and Johnston's banjo pyrotechnics, both of which are awesome; it's just that you don't have all that many chances to hear Kaufman by himself.)

The vocal work is tight throughout, but here too Austin's songs have (for me) a special edge: they pair Austin with Kaufman on some preternaturally tight, almost otherwordly harmonies that sound like one voice coming out of two mouths. (Do you remember "Highway Song" from Hot Tuna's _Burgers_ release, on which Jorma Kaukonen and David Crosby sing a harmony so tight that you can't even tell which one of them is which unless you listen very, very closely? Austin and Kaufman are like that all the time.)

And in the Credit Where Credit Is Due Department, here's a deep bow to the fine fiddle work of Tim O'Brien. (Darol Anger played on _Elevation_.)

If you're just now being introduced to YMSB, I'd recommend starting with _Elevation_ and following it with this one; then move on to the _Mountain Tracks_ releases. But it won't hurt too much if you vary the order. Heck, you can even get them all at once.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass!.......2002-09-03

Town by Town is simply one of my favorite albums to come out in the past year or two. I came to YMSB by word of mouth, and bought this disc without having heard them play a note. I was completely blown away! They deliver with incredibly high energy and an intensity rare in many other bands. And they're doing it with just guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass, yielding a very traditional yet modern sound. For my money they far exceed what other bands who incorporate elements of bluegrass are doing (i.e., String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, and Blueground Undergrass). "Rambler's Anthem" and "New Horizons" find the guys in fine form throwing down some impressive and speedy licks. There are also mellower songs of love and loss: "Must've Had Your Reasons" (a favorite) and "To See You Coming Round the Bend". And true to bluegrass tradition, they deliver with a few instumentals including "Wildewood Drive" on which they make excellent use of odd meter. Really, every track is great (including a sweet hidden bonus track). As an aside, for my money this disc is much more consistent than their previous release Elevation, Town by Town is on a different level (just one man's opinion). Call YMSB's brand of bluegrass whatever you want, these guys are the real deal. Don't forget to catch 'em live!

5 out of 5 stars A great Get-Down kind of disc.......2002-04-30

Yonder Mountain has captured the sure-fire funky attitude that sets them apart from other bluegrass musicians. A tremendous live act, YMSB reaches altitude on "Town" repeatedly.
Noteworthy is the absoulute breakdown on "Horizon." Honestly, this is what hooked me personally. I heard the song in the middle of the night from a little public radio station on a dark highway in Kentucky--I was absolutely jolted. After an obsessive search, I found the boys, bought the CD, then saw them live in Falls Church, VA.
In short though--the CD conveys the energy required to move a cynical and cranky person like myself to actively search for more of this group. God Bless new music and young talent!!
Grab this CD--see the boys live, and support determined genuine talent every chance you get!!

4 out of 5 stars Jamgrass with lots of spirit and energy.......2002-04-14

The Yonder Mountain String Band has a large legion of young, exuberant fans, and this album demonstrates why. Their sound is distinctive. The lyrical messages of their original material are interesting. Their material is well-rehearsed and arranged. Their songs convey spirit, energy and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, they sometimes push their musical capabilities and challenge their own skills on their up-tempo pieces. "Rambler's Anthem" and "Easy as Pie" open the album and are examples of this. The album then settles into a groove with songs like Idaho, Loved You Enough, Sorrow is a Highway, and Must've Had Your Reasons. They succeed with the up-tempo showcase newgrass number, New Horizons, written by mandolinist Jeff Austin. The other band members include Dave Johnston (banjo), Adam Aijala (guitar), and Ben Kaufmann (bass), and they all contribute original material to this album. Tim O'Brien also appears on fiddle and bouzouki. The Yonder Mountain String Band doesn't stick to those straight three-chord traditional progressions. They punctuate and accentuate their music with a lot of excitement, and these guys clearly have a lot of fun which, in turn, energizes their audiences. Bluegrass is in good hands with bands like the Yonder Mountain String Band that are drawing a large following of young fans to the music.

Album Description

Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.
