4 out of 5 stars I Like Link Wray..........2007-05-31

The first chord of "Rumble" always makes me smile, as it reminds me of the original Svengoolie, (Those in Chicago in the early '70's know what I'm talking about). Remarkable that radio stations banned this tune for fear of youth riots!

It's a good compilation of Link's tunes, some silly, but you can tell the Link influence on all the tunes and fun.

Get the cd if just for "Rumble"!

5 out of 5 stars Link Wray - The one you are looking for.......2007-05-12

If you've discovered Link Wray through Quentin Tarantino's moovies this album is *exactly* what you're looking for. Tracks 1 to 7 are original versions of the very best instrumentals from LW ("Rumble", "Fat Back", "Jack the Ripper", "Ace of Spades"...). The remaining isn't as good in my views but still brilliant rock guitar sound from the 50's.

2 out of 5 stars The missing Link.......2007-05-07

I had a brief listen to this album on line but should have probably listened to more of the tracks available before I bought it. Very disappointing. Not recommended to anyone other than a die hard Link Wray fan.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar rock at its finest........2007-02-12

One of the most unfairly underrated performers in the history of rock n roll, Link Wray was a wild, wooly guitar slinger who, since the late 50s, has been churning out platter after platter of raw, vicious instrumental rock. His music is simple, primal, and as focused as a sniper's scope, informed with the hulking swagger of the blues, the booze-soaked catchiness of country, and the foot-stompin' bump-and-grind of rockabilly. The music is also noticeable for its extensive use of feedback- the distorted guitars found on these songs foreshadow Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and the Who (as a matter of fact, Pete Townshend of the latter group has cited Link as one of his biggest influences). Link's playing (as well as that of his backing band, the Wraymen) is superb, a mixture of razor's-edge menace, freeform joy, and burn-down-the-house insanity. Wray is as adept at all-over-the-place guitar solos as he is at jackhammer power chords (the latter of which he may very well have invented).

This 20 track compilation from Rhino Records finally gives Link his due- it's a jaw-droppingly good showcase of the man's power, vitriol, and visceral energy. The title track (which is also Wray's signature track) is an ominous; menacing two-chord stomper that was actually banned from the radio for fear that it might start a gang fight (how cool is that?!). "Big City after Dark" is another stunner- it's a slinky little number that's based on an absolutely filthy blues riff and an atmosphere straight out of a pulp detective novel. The pounding, propulsive "The Black Widow" is a greasy barroom rocker/ car chase anthem, while "Jack the Ripper" (which appears on this album in two equally fantastic versions) is feedback-soaked surf-rock apocalypse. "Run Chicken Run" is an outta-hand rockabilly rave-up, while "Raw Hide," "The Swag," and "Dixie Doodle" prove that Link could make some vein-shreddingly good country music. "The Shadow Knows" and Wray's take on "The Batman Theme" are campy fun with great vocal performances from Wray himself (by the way, Link's music was mostly instrumental because he only had one lung). On top of that, you get the non-stop party of "Ace of Spades," and the almost-as-good-as-the-original revamp of "Rumble," cleverly entitled "Ramble." "Climbing a High Wall," another vocal cut, features some of Link's most violently good guitar playing (which compensates for the fact that Wray's voice can be, frankly, quite painful to listen to).

If you care at all about rock and roll, or guitar music, get this disk right now.

5 out of 5 stars Your LINK To A Better Life.......2007-01-23

Link Wray was the real deal-A true rock an roll rebel if there ever was one. He didn't want to play it safe. He wasn't interested in soothing your ears as much as he was jamming pencils in them, and I mean that in a good way. As we all know(or should know, way too many people don't), Link gave us the power chord and distortion, two things which practically no rock guitarist can now live without. He used these elements to create real down and dirty rock and roll that flips you the finger. Wray's name is unavoidable in the surf rock circles and is usually associated with that scene, probably because of the mostly instrumental nature, but I'd call it more rockabilly. But when listening to him, you don't get visions of happy-go-lucky teenagers shimmying and making out on the beach. The Outsiders is one thing that may come to mind. No-good, hell raisin', leather clad, motorcycle ridin' juvenile delinquents that have no respect for authority. Put it this way, if Dick Dale is the soundtrack to Frankie and DeeDee, Link is the soundtrack for Eric Von Zipper. There are a few more higher priced Wray collections floating around out there(Mr. Guitar is awesome and probably the best one), but this one's perfect for the curious. You get killer tracks from the late 50s up to the early 70s which prove that Link kicked ass no matter what decade he was playing in. Some folks here aren't too big on the few tracks with Link on vocals. Honestly, I wouldn't put much stock in that. You listen to Link sing Ain't That Lovin' You Baby, and tell me that ain't one of the sleaziest and hardest rockin' rockabilly tunes you've ever heard. Though Wray is highly praised, we can only hope that he receives some long overdue recognition for his contributions to rock music. I mean, no one sounded like this guy. Link is one of those guys that I hate hearing bands do covers of, coz no one can do it like him. Sure the music is sometimes repetitious, and it's quite simple. Anyone with a basic knowledge of guitar can probably play a Link Wray song, but that's not the point-it's HOW he plays. Being a guitar genius has squat to do with how technical or how many notes you can squeeze out(you listening to this, Malmsteen, you lifeless robot, you!). When you listen to Link, you can hear blood, sweat, tears(not the band), heart and soul. You feeling like a tough guy, bubba? You want some raw, loud, raunchy, no gimmicks, no B.S. rock and roll that still has the power to irritate the hell out of people at high volumes? If so, you're on the right Amazon page. These other reviewers(with the exception of one or two) know what they're talking about. I like to think that I do too.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth buying.......2007-05-18

I bought 23rd Street Lullaby the very same day that I purchased U2's How to Dismantle an Automic Bomb at the end of 2004. I show it on display in the store and remembered a comment by Emmylou Harris about why she approached Patti for a collaboration in her Red Dirt Girl album: namely she said how much she loved Patti's Rumble Doll (and how it passed unnoticed to the mainstream). So I bought 23rd Street Lullaby and fell completely in love with it.

Recently I decided to buy her first (and much praised by Emmylou) album through Amazon. And I don't regret it. To be honest I was not much excited after a first listen. Surely there are some songs that stand out and are catchy enough in a single listen (As Long As I (Can Be With You), Lucky Girl and even Rumble Doll). However it took me more sittings to get to appreciate other precious songs like Valerie, Spanish Dancer or Talk to Me. Jeff Lynn's production shows clearly: especially Lucky Girl reminded me a lot of his production work in Tom Petty's Into the Great Wide Open.

Yet from a purely musical perspective (english is not my mother tongue and I still haven't had the chance to listen to and read carefully the lyrics), I think I like 23rd Street Lullaby most. So I'd recommend her second album if you are thinking about buying a first record by Patti.

5 out of 5 stars Cant stop listening to it amazing album........2007-05-07

Bought this yesterday and must have listened to it 30 times.
Most albums you have to listen to a few times before you get the tunes in your head this one is instant, each song is good in my opinion the only downside there is only 12 I want more of the same, have ordered 23rd street lullaby hope I won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2007-04-15

I first heard the song 'Rumble Doll', or at least a portion of it, on Bruce Springsteen's CD 'Live in New York City'. Ms. Scialfa sang the first verse right before she is introduced as part of the E Street Band. This sparked my curiosity and so I bought her CD. Talk about a good decision. I knew I was buying a CD of a talented musician with a distinctive voice but the surprise was her ability as a lyricist. These are songs that after you hear them once, you feel this need to listen again. Now you want to look up the words and then you know you need to listen to them again. After each time you find you enjoy the songs even more than the previous time. To me that's the sign of an artist with something to say who has put together a work with a lasting quality.

If you're looking for Springsteen you are missing the point. Ms. Scialfa is a talented artist in her own right who just happens to married to The Boss. Her sound is definitely her own with similar influences as her husband.

I definitely recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars As good a songwriter as there is...........2006-11-04

....and this was among the best albums released by ANYONE in the 1990's.

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite.......2006-10-14

I first noticed Patti Scialfa's fabulous, but unique, voice during Springsteen's The Rising tour. Recently, I finally bought 23rd Street Lullaby. It became an instant favorite and is seldom out of my CD player. I then bought Rumble Doll and would be hard pressed to say which is my favorite of the two. Don't expect it to sound anything like a Springsteen album. Her music is absolutely unique and independent of him. In fact, I think her light is being hidden under his bushel. "Spanish Dancer" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I listen to A LOT of music.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal CD! Great Rockabilly!!.......2006-04-16

I picked up this CD recently together with Rockabilly Rumble Deuce. Golly Gee Records and Raucous Records have put together a winner here. Fantastic modern rockabilly music that has high quality production but with a vintage feel. 24 tracks and an hour's worth of great rockabilly music - this is a deal! There wasn't one bad cut on the record. Purchase with confidence and get ready to bop and jive!

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this cd but................2005-10-15

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this cd wanting to hear some new rockabilly bands I was not familiar with, but I was severly dissapointed. The quality of the tracks on this cd are mediocre at best and some are just downright bad, the two standout tracks are red hot and real gone by the spinouts(great tune, good hook, excellent slap bass, guitar interplay)The other standout is girl of my dreams,by peter and the wolves very Elvis, Maries the Name era early sixties sounding. The majority of the other tunes are just dowright pitiful. If you are new to the rockabilly scene, a few helpful suggestions, The Stray Cats, The Blasters, Robert Gordon, The Planet Rockers, Sun era and 56-59 Elvis, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, the list goes on and on of better spent dollars on QUALITY rockabilly music, apologies to these artists, but if this is the current state of rockabilly, please somebody help us!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Really Happy About Buying This CD.......2005-08-22

If you are a Rockabilly fan and just want to have a few CD's in your collection, then this is definitely a great place to start. I love rockabilly, but aside from one Stray Cats CD I didn't own a rockabilly CD until I found this one. It has a little bit of everything and it never gets tiresome. An awsome CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Rockabilly.......2004-01-10

My comments mirror exactly what Jack Barry said in his review. I I have always loved rockabilly music, but I have found that most of the modern bands do not quite get it right. They seem to over-do it a bit, and get too wild. But this is not the case with Rockabilly Rumble CD. This is the best compilation album of modern rockabilly music that I have ever heard.

It is a sampler of the various artists on the Golly Gee and Raucous Labels. Every track is great - some are terrific. My favorite bands are the Slingshots, Spinouts, Ralph Rebel, Peter & The Wolves, Riverside Trio, Rebel Rockers, and Jive Romeros.

The liner notes identify the particular album each track was taken from. I then went back onto the Amazon website to see if my favorite items were available. I ended up placing an order today for 5 additional CDs (2 of them are by Ralph Rebel). So this can serve as a warning that this experience can get expensive. However it is well worth the price for this terrific rockabilly music. I am now looking forward to receiving the individual CDs by these great artists.

Two releases from Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers - Rumble and Guitar Trouble, issued in 1988 and 1991, respectively - are available now on ONE fantastic CD re-release. That's double the guitar trouble for your listening pleasure! Courtesy of American Beat Records, these classic TCYR standards are now re-issued in all their digital glory! I have owned both since the first day they were on the market. Back then I was a teeny-bopper in a small West Texas town when I discovered Tommy Conwell and his Young Rumblers. Whatever Tommy puts out musically, I am rarely disappointed. He's awesome! He's amazing! He's the awesome and amazingly talented guitarist/singer/songwriter/performer Tommy Conwell!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing sound! Fantastic CD!!.......2006-04-16

I recently picked up this CD together with Rockabilly Rumble - these CDs rock! I'm a huge fan of 50s rockabilly and rock n' roll and these CDs deliver the goods. The sound quality is excellent and the songs are great. If I had to choose I'd say I prefer the more vintage sounding tunes on the CD - Rockin'Ryan and The Real Goners, Rip Carson, '52 Pickup, Peter and The Wolves and the Long Island Hornets. But all the songs are great. Golly Gee and Raucous when are we going to get Volume 3? I can't wait!

5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

Romeo and Juliet were the original star-crossed lovers; Shakespeare coined the phrase in his tragedy about their young love and tragic death. But the expression can be applied to doomed couples of all kinds: Faust and Marguerite, Othello and Desdemona, and of course Tony and Maria in West Side Story, which updates Romeo and Juliet to modern New York. This recording, taped at a gala concert in Chicago in 1998 and videotaped for a telecast on the PBS series Great Performances, presents music about doomed love composed by Leonard Bernstein, Charles Gounod, Franz Lehar, Duke Ellington, and others, including several Spanish songs that show Plácido Domingo in top form. After all the tragedy, there is a duet that signals one happy ending: the Merry Widow waltz. Domingo and Renée Fleming are two of today's greatest singers, and they live up to their reputations. The voices are too operatic for West Side Story, but Bernstein would have disagreed. For his definitive recording of the show, he chose similar voices: José Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa. --Joe McLellan

2 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2002-09-01

I must say that this album was not what I had hoped, and as it was my introduction to Renee Fleming, it was sometime before I bought another of her CDs. Domingo, I would hope, would have better judgement in his recordings, for I found this album nowhere near standard.

Please only purchase this item if you have enjoyed better works from both artists, for it was my introdution to them both, and I regret to say that I was most dissapointed! ~

5 out of 5 stars How Can You Give This Less Then Five Stars ???.......2002-08-16

This recording is just great. When I first saw it in the store, I was so affraid that this would be a live recording. Its not! Yay! The only thing I did not like about this recording was the West Side Store Prologue. Renée would make a really good Maria. Placdio would not make that great of a Tony. He really is limited to opera and art song. Renée, however, can do it all. I really love Renée's "Prelude to a Kiss". I have this song on a recording with Kathleen Battle and I have to say that I really prefer Renée's rendition much better. I say so because I think jazz should be for bigger voices. Renée shines on this recording and blows Placido out of the water. Get this for Renée but not for Placido.

4 out of 5 stars This is really very nice!.......2002-02-17

I loved this. I thought Renée was just wonderful. It's so wonderful when we have opera singers who grace our ears with doing something out of there element and doing it PHENOMINALLY!! So it's nice to have Renée singing the "Tonight" duet with Domingo in West Side Story. But I do agree with the reviewer below me, in that Domingo sounds a little operatic for this role. After all, it is a musical (not everyone's as versatile as our diva). Her "Somewhere" is just gorgeous, althought, my favorite "Somewhere" is sung by Jessye Norman (for all you West Side Story finatics out there). My personal favorites on this disc are the jazz songs by Renée. Who knew she had such a talent for jazz? I wish there were more Renée Fleming jazz recordings out there.

2 out of 5 stars Below Their Standards.......2000-02-22

While both Domingo and Fleming are among today's outstanding singers, this is a very dissappointing disc. Even in the Othello selection, which comes from their normal operatic repetoire, they are not engaging. The dramatic tension is suprisingly slack. Unless you need to have every disk they made, pass this one up.

For the latter half of the '60s, Davie Allan and the Arrows were the kings of teen exploitation film soundtracks, recording a score of them for A.I.P. and other independent studios. The core of that work revolved around Allan's manic, buzz-saw fuzz guitar (typified by The Wild Angels' "Blues' Theme," a national hit), which was to the '60s biker genre what Morricone was to the spaghetti Western. This treasure trove of Allen's decades-unavailable recordings for Mike Curb (his high school choir-mate turned producer and record-biz mini-mogul) mark the first time most of the collection's 40 rare tracks have been anthologized for CD. Allen has long been one of instrumental rock's most unsung heroes, a pioneer of nascent garage punk and tripped-out psychedelia who shrewdly informed the primitive crunch of Link Wray with a savory taste for Mancini's melodicism, taking the unlikely, electric mélange on the often downright experimental flights of multitracked six-string aggression chronicled here. Culling single sides and album cuts, this collection charts the Arrows' explosion from early, SoCal surf-rooted innocence into the wildly inventive sultans of the sonic psych-out that powered Devil's Angels, Born Losers, Wild in the Streets, and the other cult '60s soundtracks that form the bulk of this collection. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Through exclusive arrangement with Curb Records, Sundazed is thrilled to announce the release of the ultimate, fuzzed-out `60s gems by the legendary Davie Allan & The Arrows! Davie Allan & The Arrows recorded the most frenzied instrumentals the world has ever heard! Allan's fuzzed-out guitar was an audio compass pointing towards freedom, sex, danger and violence, his trashy fretboard riffs exploding behind flickering celluloid images of cycle runs, biker fights, drug freakouts and rubber-burnin' hot rods. The myriad of Arrows' recordings is filled with loud, loose and savage tracks, and includes the mega-hit "Blues Theme" from the trashy Roger Corman flick, The Wild Angels. Allan's recordings were originally spread out over four studio albums, a bevy of impossible-to-find singles, and more than a dozen rare soundtrack appearances from 1965-68, thus defusing his long overdue recognition. To restore Davie Allan to his rightful place atop the ranks of fabled guitar gunslingers, we have lovingly compiled a 40-track, double CD/28-track, double LP gatefold-edition anthology that rounds up the best of Allan's 45s, sizzling album cuts, and many mind-splattering widescreen rarities along with a full-color 16-page booklet filled with a full band history, interviews with Davie, producer Mike Curb, original Arrows members, plus unseen photos, original album graphics, AIP poster reproductions, and more!

4 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest insto rock ever, marred slightly by packaging.......2005-07-25

As another reviewer stated, this could've been a single disc comp if one of the longer tracks had been removed, making it a better bargin and more appealing to those being introduced to the work of Allen. However, even in its packaging, there is no denying this is great rock 'n' roll. It is also the best introduction to one of the masters of instrumental rock, and is on par with Link Wray and Dick Dale. The music never fails to conjure up images of Hell's Angels, or 60s exploitation flicks, and there is a reason to that. Most of this music was written for exploitation film soundtracks, primarilly those by Roger Corman. As good as those biker films are, the best part of them is by far the music. Sometimes this music can all sound the same, but with a sound this good, who's complaining? Great, raw, unpolished, if you like vintage instro rock, this is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Davie Allan RULES!.......2005-02-11

It's about gotdam time this came out on cd! Geez, it's 2005!!! Finally, I can hear this stuff on cd! I've had this material on vinyl, but not all of it! I've had friends who are collectors and only listened to this stuff! I've heard alot of their stuff in 60's movies usually in biker movies! It's great driving music when yer being chased down the street by the MAN! Go get it! Fuzzed out Ventures/Link Wray! It's like they are the Psychedelic Ventures playing Mosrites thru Mosrite fuzz pedals in the style of Link Wray! The Ventures on acid! This rules!

1 out of 5 stars GOOD MUSIC, POOR VALUE.......2005-01-17

My problem with this anthology is the not the music, but the fact that there isn't enough of it! Oh sure, it sounds like a great deal getting 40 tracks of fuzz-drenched instros. Well, wait until you pop these discs into your player and see the total times-ONE DISC IS UNDER 40 MINUTES, WHILE THE OTHER IS ONLY 45 MINUTES! Sundazed could have left off one of the longer tracks such as "Cycle-Delic" and they could have fit everything else on one disc. Yes, one disc with 39 tracks-that's how short most of these songs are! The packaging is nice and the sound is very good, but I just can't help but feeling a little ripped off paying close to thrity bucks for a 2-disc set when there's really only enough material for one cd. This should've just been a single cd release, or Sundazed could've done it right and crammed both discs full with at least 35 tracks each.

5 out of 5 stars GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.......2004-06-27

I have been waiting on an anthology from this group for years. As with The Ventures, most of their songs are instrumentals and I think these two groups are the best instrumental bands to come from America. The song selection, sound and packaging are great and it's nice to have their best songs compiled here. If a few songs were omitted, it could have been a single disc but that's only a minor issue. Since I purchased this anthology, nothing else has been on my CD player more. I suggest you get this now because collector's know how great CD's come out, you put off buying it and before you know it, it has been deleted for one reason or another. This is one of those CD's you should get now. If you like the Ventures and the music of the Standells, this is one for you. If you dream of Nancy Sinatra sitting behind you on a motorcycle, well, just go buy this darn thing.

4 out of 5 stars Been waitin' a long time for this !.......2004-06-13

Ever hear any of those gnarly reverb-drenched instrumental soundtracks from all those AIP biker films from the 60s?

Well it was Davie Allan & The Arrows that did most of 'em and now Sundazed has finally released many of those Tower singles and LP tracks that have so looong been out of print. The only ones that have even seen the light of day on CD were the ones from THE WILD ANGELS (1966) soundtrack that Curb released a few years back.

The only big drawback is that each of the CDs in this 2-CD collection only contain about 40 minutes of music apiece, thereby leaving out some wonderful instrumentals from RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP and other late 60s drive-in fare. That's why I can't give it 5 stars.

Still it's good to see some of this stuff out there and they sound great, too. Check it out!

The follow up to Konono No. 1's fantastic Congotronics, Congotronics 2, has the same heavily distorted thumb pianos, chattering hand percussion, gritty homemade amplification, and driving rhythms. This amazing sound clash was an unlikely hit in 2005 that captured the imagination of musical thrill seekers, world music enthusiasts, and hipsters into dance and electronic music. Now five other Congo bands join Konono on this two-disc set that offers nine audio tracks on CD and six videos on an accompanying DVD. While the video serves as a reminder that this music is generally meant for dancing and drinking, the audio proves that this unique approach and sound can have many more mutations than the one hit upon by Konono. The sound ranges from Kasai Allstars' warm African high-life feel to Sobanza Mimanisa's hard metallic shuffle. This is a must for those who fell under the spell of Konono's hypnotic grooves and want to hear more. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

Hot on the heels of Konono N°1, Congotronics 2 - Buzz 'N' Rumble From The Urb 'N' Jungle offers a fresh selection of even more remarkable sounds, courtesy of seven electro-traditional bands from Kinshasa, Congo. These bands draw on traditional trance music to which they've incorporated heavily distorted sounds generated by do-it-yourself amplification...much like, except that these musicians come from various regions (Kasai, Lake Mai Ndombe, Bacongo province), they use diverse rhythms, timbres and instrumentation. The trademark electrified thumb pianos and megaphones are joined by an array of buzzing drums, swirling guitars and hypnotic balafons.

Includes a 41-minute bonus DVD of material filmed in Kinshasa!

Great CD. Traditional sounds with an edge of basic electronic processing. Like the thumb piano that sounds like an electric guitar. The DVD takes this package over the top. Have a look at the African communities, performers and dancers. Don't hesitate to get this one Siamak, and everyone else.

5 out of 5 stars music that makes people want to dance and sway and move, eyes closed, getting lost in the mesmerizing repetition.......2006-03-05

You'd have to have been living under a rock for the last year to not know about Konono No. 1, but for those of you who have been, let's recap shall we? Konono No. 1 formed over 20 years ago in Kinshasa (the capital of Zaire) and have been performing their own version of Bazombo trance music, incoporating into their sound, more out of necessity than any avant garde aspirations, home built amps and microphones, hand made instruments, all assembled from old car parts and batteries, pieces of wood and various found bits of scrap material. Performing in the city and thus forced to compete with the din of cars and people and city sound, they built their own PA and speaker system, making their sound much louder but also lending it a buzzing distorted sound that became as much a part of the music as the insturments themselves.

The main instrument though, and the one which defines their sound, is an amplified likembe, a sort of thumb piano, which when run through the homemade pickups and ramshackle PA speakers buzz and distort and the melodies end up sounding like some strange sixties psych fuzz guitar. So those distorted melodies atop a wild festive bed of tribal percussion, hand drums, whistles, call and response vocals, it's like African highlife music but infused with all manner of, well like the title suggests BUZZ and RUMBLE.
But it would be naive to think a band like Konono No.1 developed in a complete vacuum. And one would assume that the music scene in Kinshasa would at least in some ways be like any place else, with loads of bands, all playing together, swapping members, that sort of thing, and this record demonstrates that for sure. While Konono No.1 ended up being the worldwide ambassadors for the Kinshasa sound, they are most definitely just one of many groups creating an amazingly vibrant scene. In fact some of the groups on Congotronics 2 take some of my favorite parts of Konono's sound and take them even further!

All of the bands on Congotronics 2 sound at least similar, employing the same basic song structure and same basic instrumentation. Cyclical repetitive rhythms, bells and hand drums locked in dense pulsing frameworks, loose but definitely the backbone of the music, the vocals are festive and wild, a single voice joined by a chorus. Each track is typically one part, maybe two, repeated and repeated with subtle variations, being as that it is an offspring of trance music, this hypnotic quality definitely defining all of these bands, a buzzing looped joyful noise, the sort of music that makes people want to dance and sway and move, eyes closed, getting lost in the mesmerizing repetition.

All of the bands also seem to employ the electric likembe as well to different effect. Sobanza Mimanisia up the distortion, their thumb pianos practically growl, super percussive and blown-out, definitely the heaviest band of the bunch. Whereas the Kasai Allstars employ their likembes as a swirling delicate percussive background, not at all distorted, gentle, lilting and pretty, sounding the most like traditional high life music. The one way in which many of the bands differ from Konono is their use of guitars, the interplay between a distorted thumb piano and a distorted guitar can be beautifully dizzying.

While all the bands are different, those differences are subtle enough that this could very well be a record by a single, albeit quite varied band, almost as if Konono No.1 decided to expand and explore a little for record number two. If you loved Congotronics, then this will for sure hit the spot, and actually the more I listen the more I think this might be even better than the first one.

Konono No.1 have a SOUND, and that sound is amazing and beautiful and practically perfect, but they truly traffic in trance music, every song a subtle variation of the song before, almost like they have ONE hour long song that just happens to be split into parts, which I love, like most droning repetitive music, if there was a way to have each track last for six hours I would, but by the same token, one has to be in the right frame of mind to bliss out and trance out. So while this collection is still most definitely trancey, it's a bit more varied, with more instrumentation (one group even incorporates accordion!) and thus ends up being a bit more engaging, especially to the casual listener.

And as if another disc of buzzing rumbling joyful trance music wasn't enough, there is also a DVD featuring live footage of 6 of the bands, including Konono (so for those of you who missed their recent visit to the US, here's your chance to see what you missed). Each band performs live, surrounded by throngs of families and children, often performing in houses, on street corners, people dancing, smiling, embracing, this is truly happy joyful music. And the footage is amazing, allowing us a glimpse not only of these amazing bands, their individually customized instrumentation, sardine cans, milk crates, springs, lengths of PVC pipe, hubcaps, film canisters, wooden boards, tin cans, thier costumed and face painted dancers, their dramatic introductions to performances, but also a look at the people, and the city, and the houses, and the streets of Kinshasa, and the culture that inspired such an amazing music.
