5 out of 5 stars Another outstanding original album.......2004-01-01

Four singles were released from this album. Thank God for you and The boys and me are both upbeat, rocking country songs of the kind that Sawyer Brown are particularly good at. The title track is about a man content with what he's got, even though it may not seem to be very much. Hard to say is about a man whose woman has just left him - he's wondering if he can get her back.

The other songs are also excellent. Farmer Tan is a song on the classic country theme of rural poverty. Listening for you is a reassuring love song. Eyes of Love is about hoping for a bright future. Drive away is a fine duet with Dana McVicker (a lady otherwise unknown to me). Heartbreak highway is about a man who has decided to leave his woman, but it's not sad - it sounds like the man has got over the sadness and is looking forward to a fresh start somewhere else. Love to be wanted is about a man who is a little suspicious of what his woman might do - but only a little. Hold On is a touching ballad about a man looking for reconciliation.

Overall, this is a bright, upbeat country album of the kind I expect from Sawyer Brown. Of course, it's brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2003-08-15

This is Sawyer Brown in peak form. Besides the singles--The Boys and Me, Thank God for You, Outskirts of Town (my favorite song on the album), and Hard to Say--there's plenty of great music here:

--Farmer Tan is another take on the plight of the American farmer. SB always handled this kind of song well.

--Listenin' for You and Eyes of Love are great upbeat love songs. Eyes of Love has outstanding melody.

--Hold On is a beautiful acoustic ballad; I rate it #2 behind Outskirts of Town.

Sawyer Brown has recently gotten away from their early '90s acoustic-based sound, favoring a return to their slicker, rocked-up '80s roots. I like that side of the band, too, but I really hope that they will someday release another acoustic-based album. I have a certain amount of nostalgia for this CD and the country music released in that period; I got Outskirts of Town for my 12th birthday, along with my first CD player. But fuzzy memories aside, this really is one of the truly great country CDs of the '90s. Don't be surprised if you become a die-hard Sawyer Brown fan after listening to it.

4 out of 5 stars Outskirts: Unofficial Lost Outkast ???.......2006-06-01

The Outskirts album is a nice album to add to your Outkast music collection if you are truly an outkast music lover. Although it isn't that classic Outkast beat and music, Floyd The Locsmif stills gives you an original and creative beat with a smooth feel to the classic lyrics of Big Boi & Dre. The album is similar to a live performance album if Outkast were to produce one. The Locsmif use of strong percussion, piano, guitar and woodwind sounds will suggest a smooth jazz vibe throughout the album. The Outkast classic lyrics that are on this album would include Elevators, ATliens and Ms Jackson to name a few. Even Cee-Lo has a couple of tracks on this album; and yes it is really Outkast on this album and not some clowns imitating their flow. I gave this album 4 Stars because it isn't 100% Outkast, but yet it is still the Mighty "O".

5 out of 5 stars All My Friends They've Gone Underground - Outskirts: A Hidden Rock Classic 20 Years Later.......2007-06-20

Music legends sometimes are born with their debut album and such was the case with Canada's Blue Rodeo. Blue Rodeo had been creating quite a buzz from their energetic live performances in Toronto since 1985, but with the release of Outskirts in 1987, the band's distinctive musical vision came together on ten of the best songs recorded in the 1980's. As soon as I heard the first chords of "Heart Like Mine" from a cassette my brother gave me, I knew I was hearing a great band. Tremendously melodic, each song pulls one in and once there, the lyrics fascinate and hypnotize with tales of hard luck, reckless abandon, the need to connect romantically, seemingly unexplainable self destructive behavior, low men in high places, distorted views of reality, lost possibilities, and the unending struggle to clarify feelings and relationships. The song writing credited to Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor was razor sharp in its' attention to details that make memorable often times ordinary events, "These late night conversations leave a strange taste like French cigarettes." Keyboardist, Bob Wiseman contributed inventively weird piano and organ fills that give these songs an added depth of mystery ("Floating", Piranha Pool"). Reviewers at the time compared Blue Rodeo to The Band, The Byrds, and Elvis Costello and the Attractions and one can hear these influences on Outskirts. But what made this record so smart was that young ambitious musicians had synthesized the best of what they heard and liked and forged a unique and distinctively exciting post new-wave rock sound that emerged from the then happening scene in Toronto, Canada. Blue Rodeo's sound and style would, evolve into a more alternative country rock sound in later years, but Outskirts still stands as the testament of a very talented young band who were fairly bursting at the seams with musical energy. A promising start for a unique band. "And when they ask you why, you say the joker is wild!" Outskirts captures this energy and then some and it still sounds as fresh now as it did twenty years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2003-12-02

This is with no doubt the best Blue Rodeo album ever. Although, it was not their best selling album. Believe it or not, my mom bought this album right after she bought Diamond Mine (another good one) and I was only 2 years old. I play the guitar now (Blues, Rock, R&B) and I feel, because of this album (being the first music I ever heard) totally helped to change and influence my direction in my guitar playing and taste in music. I was singing and playing around with these songs at an earlier age than anyone could imagine.

Blue Rodeo is definetly not the band they used to be. Now, they play irritating pop and country music. 5 Days in July was not a bad album, but I feel it was in a whole new direction. They seemed to have wanted to do 4 albums with more of a rock feel and now (because of 5 Days in July) got carried away with the country and pop feel. Their second-last album released (The Days in Between) was definetly a good example of pop (but wasn't too extreme). The Days in Between was not a horrible album. It was a very different type of feel, but it was far too different.

Palace of Gold (their latest album) couldn't have been worse. Greg Keeler used to do much more of a rock feel, but still maintained the ability to express his feelings in a such a way that does not have anger. Greg has changed tremendously (physically, musically, and mentally) because of the fact of him finding out he was adopted a few years ago and the terrible feeling of diabetes. Jim Cuddy tends to write pop songs in which he trys to express himself poetically but fails. Jim Cuddy's songs (I feel) have no actual meaning in them.

Blue Rodeo achieved greatness a long time ago. No matter how hard they try now, they will never achieve it again. Then again, we will always have precious memories of their first few albums which carry greatness. Blue Rodeo was the best Canadian band that ever existed.

5 out of 5 stars Why Aren't These Guys More Popular??.......2002-03-15

I was introduced to Blue Rodeo in the spring of 1988. They played a gig during my school's (Lake Forest College in Illinois) spring wing-ding weekend (you know the type). While most of spoiled preps ignored them, they blasted out a series of smart, honest, hook-filled songs that left me transfixed. After they ended their set with a mind-bending, feedback-filled 10-minute freakout jam, my roommate and I approached them to let them know that some people appreciate good music. They were great -- Greg and Jim chatted with us and their road manager gave us a cassette of the first album, "Outskirts." I thought it was tremendous then and I still do today. Imagine if -- back in the spring of 1966 -- John Lennon and Paul McCartney had hooked up with Bob Dylan and the Band. That's basically the sound and feel of Blue Rodeo on "Outskirts", and its successors, "Diamond Mine" and "Casino". After that, they started to grow more in the so-called "alt-country" direction, which isn't really my bag, I'm afraid. But their first three albums are classic rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Canadian, eh!.......2000-12-13

Blue Rodeo is one of the greatest rock bands to come out of Canada. And 15 years later, they are still going strong, as well as Greg and Jim having some solo outings along the way. This is a terrific debut that hinted at the greatness to come. Every song here is good, no filler. The gorgeous ballad 'Try' is one of the nicest ballads I have heard, and is also popular on country stations as well as rock. Hence the 'Rodeo' in the bands name. Jim said in an interview that it's to highlight the little bit of country that they put into their albums. The other hit was 'Rose-Coloured Glasses'. Greg and Jim take turns throughout the album on lead vocals, which gives their albums variety, as each have a different style of singing. If you don't know this group yet, what are you waiting for?

5 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret In Canada.......2000-11-16

Outskirts was Blue Rodeo's first release (1987) and I fell in love with it. It's been over ten years since I bought "Outskirts" and my feelings for it having changed a bit since. Back then I had only heard the song "Try" but upon listening to the entire CD, I was shocked by it's greatness. From the very first cut "Heart Like Mine" with it's slow a cappella beginning; building to a crescendo with the words "I just want to find...a heart like mine, accompanied by Bobby Wiseman's outstanding syntheseizer, this album soars. Greg Keelor's low gravelly voice hamonizes well with Jim Cuddy's silky tenor voice. Greg takes the lead on the moderate tempo Rose Coloured Glasses, Upskirts and the uptempo Joker is Wild. Jim whose voice I absolutely love does a beautiful rendition of the ballad Try and Rebel as well as Underground. For a first album this one is shockingly good . I highly recommend it and the newer releases as well. Bare Naked Ladies get international acclaim but the best kept secret here in Canada is my favourite band Blue Rodeo.

For over twenty years, the LAZY COWGIRLS were the undisputed kings of Los Angeles Underground Rock 'n' Roll, releasing countless singles and albums for labels such as Sympathy For the Record Industry, Bomp!, and Gearhead. Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips fame has even called them an "American Institution". The Cowgirls may be no more, but their founder, vocalist and songwriter, Pat Todd, has released a two CD set with his new band, PAT TODD & THE RANKOUTSIDERS entitled "The Outskirts of Your Heart". The album is nothing less than the culmination of two years of hard work, love and determination. Produced and engineered by former Sparks guitarist, Earle Mankey (The Cramps, Concrete Blonde, The Beach Boys, Possum Dixon), the album reflects the diversity of American Rock 'n' Roll, from raunchy rockers like "Alive as Yesterday" to heartfelt laments, "Christmas Day".

Containing at least one absolutely perfect track, this exceptionally beautiful and eccentric album features older and more recent music found outside Java's capital. "Stambul Bila," from the modern repertoire, sounds both geographically specific and nearly universal at once. A solo trumpet that immediately suggests Mexican mariachi introduces a 3-D fabric of tempos played by a rigorously loose stratification of xylophones, drums, and gongs. Chinese violins and a flute flutter above and below, commenting and cajoling the male and female singers, who alternate verses. "A funny thing about trains," sings Mama Ong cryptically, "they're so long but there's no horse. A funny thing about my sweetheart," she continues. "He walks past again and again." The faux-Latin trumpet continues its festive air until a Hawaiian steel guitar suddenly drifts in like a dream of Nigerian juju music, elevating this wild interisland Dixieland-gamelan experience into sublimity for more than nine minutes. The rest of the album is nearly as great. --Richard Gehr

Album Description

Gambang Kromong comes from a virtually invisible part of the capital of Indonesia that most people have forgotten. Both performers and audience for this music today live at the edges of Jakarta and in the towns and semi-rural areas beyond. The music is wonderfully disorienting. It combines Indonesian, Chinese, and sometimes European-derived instruments in musical styles, at times reminiscent of gamelan music and at other times recalls small-group jazz of the 1920s and 1930s. "Don't miss the modern stuff-- a Dixieland-gamelan head trip you have to hear..." -- The Village Voice

      Album Description

"After a dazzling studio debut, Cyril Lance returns with a breathtaking six-song live disc from last December that further strengthens the argument that he's one of the most exciting guitar players around today. It finds Lance exploring a wide range of styles with openness and adventure. The opening "I Want the Real Thing" is a gritty rocker in the Little Feat/Sonny Landreth mode, while the 11-minute "I Went Down" is more soulful, with keyboardist Johnny Neel offering a powerful vocal as Lance's guitar soars from melodic phrases to sinewy, spiraling leads. Neel shines again on his own "Blues Ain't Nothing," but Lance and band really show their instrumental prowess on a truly imaginative arrangement of Willie Dixon's "Same Thing." The disc closes with a spirited and funky run-through of John Scofield's "Chank" with beefy Hammond organ riffs setting the perfect backdrop for Lance's fluid and tenacious soloing." -- Mick Skidmore, RELIX MAGAZINE (Sept./Oct. 2004)

Recorded over three nights at some of the best performing venues in North Carolina in December of 2003, this reunion tour sparked some remarkably fresh interpretations and the recordings show just how much fun the band (and the audience) had getting back together again.

Featuring American-Roots music master and Grammy-Nominee Johnny Neel (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Grease Factor...) on piano, B3 organ and vocals, Boston-based B3 organ master Matt Jenson, and Lance's rhythm brothers of many years Kelly Pace on Drums, Chris Carroll on bass and vocals, this is the perfect base for Lance's slide and electric guitar explorations.

LIVE from the OUTSKIRTS pays tribute to the great live albums of the 60's and 70's from the Allman Brother's LIVE at Filmore East, Jimi Hendrix's Live at Monterey, Santana, Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus, all the time keeping that deep blues roots going whether they're jamming over a New Orleans street beat, Willy Dixon's "Same Thing", or a John Scofield funk tune.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finely calibrated artistic focus. Music for the intelligent........2005-03-11

This is simply one incredible disc. I tend to seek out Live recordings mainly, due to the raw, inspired, creative energy only found on those, and I must say that CYRIL LANCE: LIVE FROM THE OUTSKIRTS may very well rank up there with the best of them, those "definitive" Live recordings that we all dearly love. This is truly epic, world-class material that deserves a lot more attention than it currently has received.

The band is caught on tape in top-notch shape, they are tight and talented, with incredible energy and excitement injected into every single performance. Neel's solid vocals and neo-Juliard-league piano add such a refined and sophisticated touch to the whole experience, and Cyril's guitar work is absolutely riveting. The instrumental sections just go on and on, the whole band pulsating as one balanced, cohesive organism, steadily increasing in energy and complexity, until you just think they HAVE to start winding down, but that's when they shift into high-gear and take off into the Stratosphere. Pure adrenalin rush! The material is a mixture of blues, blues/rock, funk, and soul (while eschewing all cliches), and should appeal to a very wide audience indeed.

The digital recording and final mixdown is of impeccable quality. Rip as lossless AIFF to your iPod and enjoy the sonic purity.

I cannot recommend this CD highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Cyril Lance- A True Innovator.......2004-10-02

When Cyril Lance moved to North Carolina, the Old North State had a VERY good day.

Lance is truly indefinable by genre, but is acknowledged as a true guitar virtuoso. He can play Blues as authentically as the masters and stacks up excellently against any of today's Jam Bands.

Live from the Outskirts is as fine an example of capturing the essence of the artist's live performances as has come along in quite some while. The album sounds studio quality while capturing the energy of an Outskirts performance perfectly.

Cyril has surrounded himself with some of the finest musicians in his adopted State. B-3 ace Dave McCracken can hang with anyone who has ever played the organ. Kelly Pace is the drummer who everyone wishes could be in his or her band and Bassist/singer Chris Carroll has the chops and voice that excite music lover.

This is a perfect follow-up to Cyril's breakout release, Stranger in My House, a definate must-own release. Anyone who appreciates awesome guitar playing and exceptionally well crafted songs will love these two items.

And on a personal note, Cyril is a wonderful person and an absolutely driven musician as well.

This is the best album by a female country singer I have ever heard and I would walk up to Heather Myles and say that to her face. Libbi Bosworth was able to give us only two albums--this one and 2001's "Libbiville," also first-rate. But this stunning "Outskirts of You" is one of four or five albums from among several thousand that completely changes the week one first hears it, because other activities are pushed aside for multiple replays of these gripping, fascinating songs, most of which Bosworth wrote.

Do whatever you have to do--pay whatever you have to pay--to add this to your collection. I would not take two Daytona 500 tickets for mine.

5 out of 5 stars Austin country on par w/Kelly Willis & Sara Evans.......2000-05-04

Austin-based Libbi Bosworth hasn't received the sort of press attention afforded some of her more famous citymates, but her CD debut harbors the best qualities of that city's tremendous musical outpouring. Her songwriting is personal and affecting, while her voice stretches from Wanda Jackson style honky-tonk to 50s countrypolitan ballads.

Producer Earl B. Freedom surrounds her with sounds that are at once vintage in their arrangement, and modern in the clarity of their recording. The balance gives Bosworth's songs the colorations of classic country without being slavishly devoted to retro trappings. The swinging "Don't Call Me Crazy" and the perfect-for-a-slow-dance-at-the-prom "Outskirts of You," are terrific nods to the past, complete with Jordanaire-styled backing vocals.

Her best songs, including "My Old Man," "Up All Night" (covered by Kelly Willis, but sounding even better from the songwriter's own mouth) and "I Won't Let Your Memory Drag Me Down," resound with the sort first-person imagery that makes country music great.

Fans of Kelly Willis and Sara Evans would find much to enjoy here!
