4 out of 5 stars Biker like an Icon is a great song and so is................2007-06-21

I read two reviews bashing one of the songs that I love off this album.
Biker Like an Icon is one of his best 90's rockers. For me....this is the best song on the album. Which is about a young girl who is in love with a bad boy....a biker.....probably came about because McCartney was expierencing some not so great characters with his own daughters and their dates that they brought home around that time.

I also like Looking for changes "I saw a cat with a machine in his brain, the man that feed him said he 'didn't feel any pain' Great message song about Animal rights....and great song.

Other great songs on this album are Mistress and Maid, I owe it all to you, Golden Earth Girl, The lovers that never were.

Get out of my way...is an ok rocker.
Wine Dark Open Sea....also has a great smoothing feel to it, with some nice words, and chording.

His other two message songs....Peace in the Neighborhood and Cmon on People fall flat..... and the title track Off the ground barely makes it off the ground.
But otherwise this is a fairly strong album from Paul.
It probably does rank as one of his most underated albums.

5 out of 5 stars Off The Ground Is Out Of This World !.......2006-12-18

The pundits who panned this album must have been drugged. Off The Ground is equal to Band On The Run and Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. This comprises the zenith of his career. Paul's vocals are vintage on several of this albums supreme songs including "Mistress And Maid", "Peace In The Neighborhood", "Golden Earth Girl", "The Lovers That Never Were" and "Winedark Open Sea". He rocks hard on the animal rights anthem "Looking For Changes" and the frenetic "Get Out Of My Way". Paul's Hippie Beatles era sound is recaptured on "Hope Of Deliverence" "C'mon People" and "Cosmically Conscious". None of Paul's solo CD's are as political and idealistic as Off The Ground. Ths is a must buy for anyone who loved "Band On The Run". Off The Ground showcases McCartney's impeccable brilliance with no silly love songs. I think Lennon would love and respect this utopian-themed CD.

3 out of 5 stars Off The Ground (1993).......2006-06-09

This album by Paul McCartney has been forgotten apparently .You cant even buy it in stores anymore. "Off The Ground", "Hope of Deliverance", "I Owe It All To You", "Peace In The Neighbourhood", "Winedark Open Sea" and "C'Mon People" are all EXCELLENT songs. The others are just mediocre filler songs. Not too good, not too bad. Its unfortuante more people are buying rap music than a lost gem like this from one of the greatest musicians to ever live. If your a BIG fan of Paul, you should have this CD. If your a casual fan dont buy this because you will be disappointed. For a casual listener get the 2001 release "Wingspan: Hits and History" which is a two disc "greatest hits" collection of Wings 1970's music. It has the hits from 1970 to about 1984's "No More Lonely Nights". It will really get you interested in Pauls music.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-05-07

Looking for Changes ought to be PETA's anthem....
that's a great song... it's so funny... it's like every once in a while... Paul
will just churn up a wonderful song making you forget momentarily that
The Beatles are no more.... and then... he'll slip right back into mediocrity..
overall though.... this album has a nice environmenal message and
some interesting song-writing by Paul... I don't recommed it unless you're
a big Paul fan...

4 out of 5 stars A Lost Early 90's Gem.......2006-04-08

I heard this album in high school and brushed it off as older McCartney fluff, preferring The Beatles and his 70's stuff. But now having just heard it again it has aged quite well, almost like a fine wine. I remember seeing the "OFF THE GROUND" video and that song was and still is the best one. But there are very few fillers here. "Mistess & Maid" and "The Lover's That Never Were"are two other highlights. "Flaming Pie" still is his better 90's album but this is a worthy predecessor. So put this album in your cd mix with "Flaming Pie", "Driving Rain", and "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard" and have a Good Time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great Classics!.......2006-08-03

Oedipus Tex & Other Choral Calamities is one of the must haves from PDQ Bach. This album has some of his best stuff on it including the title tracks and one of the funniest songs he has composed "classical rap" this is well worth one's time to check out.

5 out of 5 stars hilarity in music.......2002-10-25

Virtually every CD that Peter Schickele has put out under the name of PDQ Bach has been absolutely hilarious. This is one of his best albums - it will have you in stitches in no time flat.

"Oedipus Tex," the title piece, is a stunning parody of (of course) Sophocles "Oedipus Rex" - from the line "the gods are ticked off and now someone must pay" to the ending chorus of "the eyes of Texas are upon you" (set to the tune of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), the piece is one of the funniest things I have ever heard.

"Classical Rap" - this track alone is worth the whole cost of the album. This "Yuppie" rap combines the stereotypes of rap music with Vivaldi and Bach, and has as its setting the upper West side of Manhattan.

"Knock Knock Cantata" - some of the worst jokes you'll ever hear set to some of the worst music you'll ever hear. The combination of text and setting is really hilarious - talk about form meeting content.

"Birthday Ode for Big Daddy Bach" - the more you know about music, the funnier this piece is.

BUY THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Irreverent hilarity.......2002-08-09

Oedipus Tex is both my favorite Country/Western ballad and one of my favorite oratorios!

Classical Rap is, IMHO, the only Rap piece worth listening to.

This is one of "The Bad Boy of Classical Music", Peter Schickele's best recordings.

5 out of 5 stars I am a PDQ junkie!.......2002-08-08

This was my first PDQ recording and it has kept me coming back for more.My father who hates music even LOVES it!It does take a special musician or music lover to appreciate the genius of such a man as Peter Shickele. Being a musician, I have performed numerous PDQ works in the past and they are extremely difficult.Oedipus Tex is by far the most ingenious album created, in my belief, in as far as its contents and musical professionalism.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant parody.......1999-10-16

Oedipus Tex is a brilliant parody... I had a teacher listen to it once and then it circulated around the entire English department. "Classical Rap" is a wonderful piece as well.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

4 out of 5 stars POWERFUL VOICES.......2006-02-28

Young tenors at their individual and collective best. Powerful, dynamic, and emotionally charged performance.
Good selection of vocal works for the newcomer, some light, some heavy.

5 out of 5 stars Best discovery in music in a quite some time........2005-07-08

I happened to see this ensemble perform in concert on PBS one night last winter during a fund raiser.

All that I can say is, "Wow".

Since that time I have purchased this CD for myself and as gift to three other music lovers; all of which have offered me their gratitude.

It is not very often that a musical experience of skill and talent surfaces. They hold us within the magic of voice, combined with musical stanzas and lyric, and the chemistry of TEAMWORK.
The gentlemen excel in such offerings as Vangelis' "Conquest of Paradise", "World Anthem", and the melancholy Irish "Thunderpoint", which sends chills down my spine.

If I can choose one group to open the next Olympics celebration it is The Ten Tenors.
I can only hope that they broaden their US tour.
I can also only hope that they continue to produce and record more albums.

Bravo

5 out of 5 stars Larger Than Life.......2005-07-04

Yes, clearly the name alone is a homage/copy from the Three Tenors and, no, they aren't as operatic as the others. However, they are 10 guys who sing a cross between choir, Broadway, opera and a capella. That said, you'll find these guys encapitvating. First of all, the operatic aspect is a misnomer, because when they're having fun, they're at their best. Listen to them do their Dancing Queen Melody. Not only is it well done, it's fun and hysterical.

This all said, the CD contains a bonus DVD disc, which in my opinion blows away the CD. Not that it's as well produced; however, you need to see these 10 guys interact to get the idea of how good they are. Their faces express the emotion, as all 10 of them work together to take you across various musical genres. Their interaction is what makes them special, which is why I say, "Buy this CD for the DVD"

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2005-07-04

Delta Air Lines featured most of this album on thier in-flight audio, and I heard it on a long flight and its equally long return. Bought the album after that. Not a fan of opera, classical, or pop, I was surprised to find that The Ten Tenors did all of these better then any of the three genres' more popular artists. I enjoy the album and recommend it as adult contemporary.

5 out of 5 stars "brilliant arrangements and performances ~ The Ten Tenors".......2004-10-23

Students in 1995 studying opera classics, they performed in 1998 while attending the University and began touring...haven't stopped since ~ their individuality and comradeship with close touching harmony will soon grab you and never let go ~ outstanding performances "STONDE" [Patrick Abrial/Jean Marc Grossi/Thierry Micaelli], beautiful beyond words, "POR UNA CABEZA" [Carlos Gardel/Alfredo Le Para], the tango from the film "Scent Of A Woman", the vocal is extraordinary, "SUNDANCE" [Andy Arthurs/Philip Chambon], folk genre beat with tempos that get completely under your skin, terrific arrangements by the composer, "DESTINY LIES" [Craig Atkinson/Stewart Morris], lead vocal by Jason Turbull reads like a Top Ten New Age Hit, full orchestra and chorus abound ~ "CONQUEST OF PARADISE" [Vangelis], non stop harmony and brilliant orchestration with the full voices of The Ten Tenors, enough power to light up a big city block ~ "BICYCLE RACE" [Freddie Mercury], the ultimate big hit of Queen, brilliant arrangements by Shannon Brown and Drew Graham.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Early Music Disc.......2006-03-19

I actually heard this on Ohio State's Radio Station, WOSU, way
back in the summer of 1971, I'd just picked up my dog from the vet's, there was a thundershower going on, and this fantastic
album came on the air. I was immediately entranced with it, and
immediately bought the LP. It was out of print for many years,
and so last summer when I was in Seattle for Cycle One of the Ring, I was overjoyed to see a copy of this at Tower Records;and
instantly purchased it.

This is quite possibly one of the best Early Music discs ever
made, bar none. In fact, I believe it set off the Early Music
Revolution-without it, there might be a much smaller interest in
Early Music due to living history enthusiasts, such as the SCA
(Society for Creative Anachronism), Renfaire devotees, and others.

This is the germinal album that started it all: it was the first time that a historical movie had been accurately scored
with the music and instruments of the timeperiod-and David Mun-
row's Early Music Consort's lively interpretations galvanized
a belated enthusiasm for Early Music that continues to evolve
to this very day.

In short, BUY THIS ALBUM-it is a classic. And wonderful to listen to. An added frisson is the Song by King Henry VIII him-
self, "Pastime With Good Company," in his younger days he was
quite the all-round renaissance man, jouster, writer, composer,
athlete, and his music is pretty good, too.

As a companion album to this, I would highly recommend one of the other David Munrow albums to start with, Two Renaissance
Dance Bands, which is LP format was known as Music of the Court:
Music for King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I." This contrasts the
dance music heard at both courts, and the times, also a desert
island early music disc.

In short, BUY THIS DISC!!!!!!!!!!!It kicks musical Uknowwhat!!!

It completely shatters the old, long-held belief that Early Music was dull, dull, dull. Far from it. It was every bit as
lively as anything from the 18th, 19th centuries, and our own.

5 out of 5 stars I'm thrilled to find this is now available on CD!.......2006-01-02

I first received this album as a gift way back in the early 70's, when I was an eleven year old Henry VIII fan. It is often thought to be the score for the BBC six-part series The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, but was actually the score for a spin-off movie by the same name, also starring Keith Michell as King Hal. The six-part series actually did not have much music in it (low budget).

This album has excellent examples of early music, performed on period instruments. It features one song written by Henry VIII, as well as many authentic period pieces. There are a couple of "cheats" - a setting of a poem purportedly written by Anne Boleyn in the Tower before her execution, and a Robin and Marian ballad which was written specifically for the movie, but the rest is authentic and authentically performed. The weakest part of the album is a poor choice in counter tenor, who performs Pastime In Good Company and the song made from the Anne Boleyn poem - he has problems with pitch and diction. Otherwise, the album is purely thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-12-30

This CD is actually a re-release of an old album not from the TV series but actually from a spin-off movie. The TV series is titled, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII". The movie was called "Henry VIII & His Six Wives" (which, unfortunately, was never released on video or DVD here in the states, but may be one day). Regardless, this music from the film is a wonderful example of Tudor and Elizabethan music played on authentic instruments by on of the greatest early music scholars and musicians, the late David Munrow. This is an excellent CD for fans of early music and anyone who wants to experience the true sounds of the period.

5 out of 5 stars It's on the mark........2004-12-16

I saw the mini series on PBS and I now own the videos. I believe it is on a box set of DVD's too. The music on this CD is the soundtrack to the series. If you loved Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson playing Queen Elizabeth back in the 1970's you will definitely love this series. The music and the acting are so incredibly good.

5 out of 5 stars At Least Three Feet Off The Ground!.......2000-11-09

"Three Feet Off The Ground" is yet another fine recording from this great all-instrumental New England-based band. Many people will be familiar with Bruce Katz's amazing keyboard talent from his years of outstanding work with Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. In 1997, Bruce left the Broadcasters to focus on his own band--and what a band! The guys in this band have played together for quite awhile and they're some of the best musicians in the northeast. "Three Feet Off The Ground" really shows what they can do. This is their fourth CD together and, I think, their best though I love all their albums. Bruce has really hit his stride, as has guitarist Julien Kasper who definitely cuts loose on this one. Their creativity and musicianship are astounding, and the backing by drummer Ralph Rosen and acoustic bass player Blake Newman is, as always, energetic and perfectly suited to whatever is being played.

This album has some of everything on it--blues, jazz, gospel, and even a little country flavor in the title track. (Check out the sound clip of that track!) The sound quality of the CD is superb, and every song is played with real feeling for the roots of the music. I've come to love the Hammond B3 (and there's plenty of B3 on "Three Feet Off The Ground" ), primarily because of Bruce's playing...what a great instrument it is when played by someone with Bruce's flair, skill and feel for it. This CD also includes the great Duke Robillard on two tracks, and Bruce Katz wrote the liner notes himself, which I find very refreshing.

Living in the Boston area as I do, I get to hear the Bruce Katz Band relatively often--in fact, I never miss them if I can help it! So I can tell you that they are truly outstanding, both on their CDs and in their live performances--there just isn't a more exciting group around. They never play a song the same way twice because they're good enough to be able to do anything they want to with a song on the spur of the moment, and "Three Feet Off The Ground" reflects their spontaneity and inventiveness. They tour often, so if you have an opportunity to see the Bruce Katz Band in your area, don't miss them! They will definitely leave you feeling at least "Three Feet Off The Ground!"

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2000-10-01

I picked up this CD because I enjoyed the last Bruce Katz Band offering (Mississippi Moan) immensely. I was a little apprehensive that the band wouldn't be able to maintain the high standard for exceptional, diverse instrumental music that their last CD had set, but I had no need to worry. Three Feet Off The Ground is another outstanding mix of jazz, blues, gospel - you name it - its roots are in there. This time out the band is pared down to a 4 piece ensemble and as the liner notes state, less is indeed more. The sound is lean and mean and the recording quality is a joy to the ears. If you like educated, exciting instrumental music performed by world-class talent, this CD is a MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars This CD lifts me THREE FEET OFF THE GROUND.......2000-09-29

I have to say that this CD is a suberb effort by The Bruce Katz Band. I was first turned onto Bruce Katz about seven year ago, when he was with Ronny Earl and the Broadcasters. Man, he blew me away. I fell in love with the first album I heard by them, STILL RIVER. I loved the Broadcasters instrumental mix of Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. I finally got a chance to see Bruce play in 1997 and 98 and was totally amazed by his playing. WOW! those weren't overdubs of Bruces piano and organ playing together. He does it all himself, and does it beautifully. I was upset when I heard that Bruce quit the Broadcasters, but was elated to hear he started his own band. This album is another wonderful mix of Blues, Jazz, and Gospel, with a little mix of country. If you love the B-3 this album will lift you THREE FEET OFF THE GROUND!!

5 out of 5 stars Great single! But wrong track listing!.......2006-10-29

I couldn't find a way to correct the track list, so here it is:

        1.) Off The Ground (3:38)
        2.) Cosmically Conscious (4:39)
        3.) Style Style (5:59)
        4.) Sweet Sweet Memories (4:02)
        5.) Soggy Noodle (0:28)

This is a must for those who need every track (like me! :] ).

4 out of 5 stars Second Single from "Off the Ground" Rocks.......2005-01-25

The 1993 "Off the Ground" album gave Macca his last true international success. It spawned 4 singles, this being the second of them.

"Off the Ground" (5 tracks, 19 min.) starts off with the rocking title track, just great. "Cosmically Conscious" is excerpted on the album as the fade-out but featured here in its full version, and a great song. "Style Style" is an above-par mid-tempo rocker, and could have easily fitted onto the flow of the album. "Sweet Sweet Memories" features great vocal harmonies, another great B-side. "Soggy Noodle" is a short guitar instrumental, and unnecessary, frankly.

In all, though, this is a great single, and a necessary addition to any Paul McCartney completist.
