Amazon.com essential recording
Fittingly for an album celebrating early- to mid-'60s pop and blue-eyed soul,
An Innocent Man (1983) spun off six hit singles. Between the social concerns of
The Nylon Curtain and this record's bopping tempos and blaring horns, Joel was at a peak of craftsmanship--the ultimate proof perhaps being the Chipmunks' rendition of "The Longest Time," which did absolutely nothing to diminish the song's winning charm. Much of America's enduring affection for Joel stems from this disc, and rightly so.

My shark skin jacket and ditty-bop shades.......2007-06-14
If you look at the albums "Glass Houses" and "The Nylon Curtain" as the first two parts of a trilogy, then Billy Joel finished his timeline with the flawless "An Innocent Man." On "Glass Houses," Joel attacked the modern sound of the 80's, cutting his classic pop with new wave edge to show he could make modern music. "The Nylon Curtain" confronted the boomer generation with a song-cycle firmly rooted in the VietNam War, The Beatles and The Doors. And with "An Innocent Man," Joel stepped back in music one more time, to strike at his 50's adolescence. This was probably the closest thing to an autobiography that Joel ever recorded, and it is easily the strongest selection of songs he'd ever recorded. He even makes the case in "Keeping The Faith," singing
"I would not be here now
if I didn't have the hunger.
And I'm not ashamed to say
that the wild boys were my friends.
Cause I never felt the desire
till their music set me on fire
and then I was saved."
The ten songs on "An Innocent Man" run the gamut from the Dion doo-wop of "The Longest Time" to the Four Seasons pop of "Uptown Girl." Joel is obviously having a blast on this material; rarely has he ever sounded this light-hearted or infectious. While that might have to do with his new love at the time, supermodel "Christy Lee" Brinkley happens to be the subject of much of the album, every song here has a great melody and catchy choruses abound. In his effort to make a tribute to the fifties (kind of the way he wanted to prove his edgier 80's style on "Glass Houses"), Joel crafted a classic on "An Innocent Man."
This Night.......2007-06-04
Best cut: This Night.
Great chorus. It should be!
It's Beethoven's Sonata No. 8, in C Minor (Panthetique) Opus 13
A fun, upbeat album.......2006-11-13
Although this album was released many years ago, it seems that a majority of these songs have been Top-40 hits: Tell Her About It (#1), Uptown Girl (#3), An Innocent Man (#10), The Longest Time (#14), Leave a Tender Moment Alone (#27), Keeping The Faith (#18). I'm a fan of many of his songs throughout Billy Joel's career, but for me it's a fresh change from some of the more solemn or heavier songs he's written.
Super Polished.......2006-11-07
Billy Joel breezes through a variety of styles, ranging from doo wop to the Four Seasons. There's even a little Beethoven thrown in, just to show he's smarter than all of us. Joel's transitions through a variety of styles seem almost effortless, which is of course why he gets so much criticism. His talent cannot be questioned, but it almost seems like he can do this stuff in his sleep.
Cool 50's Tribute.......2006-10-26
I'll just get down to details here. Yes, you have probably heard at least three tracks on this album: "Uptown Girl," "The Longest Time (which is Mr. Joel four times over! Can you believe it?)," and "Tell Her About It." While I consider all of those HIGHLY enjoyable songs, I'm not here to tell you "I love this track" or "these are my favorite tracks in order." (Though to warn you, I may do just that. But aren't individual expressions what really create life's essence?)
This album is worth it as a whole because not only does it contain some of the best staples of solid American pop/rock, but it holds a wide variety of songs that are completely dazzling with originality and show that old fashions never truly go out of style. The weakest song may very well be "Keeping the Faith," but give it a chance. It's the least Fifties-sounding track on the collection, but it's definitely unique. I wouldn't consider this Joel's best, but it's highly listenable and contains great surprises, like "Christie Lee (love that song)."
(Oops, I guess I did lend you some personal opinions of mine. Do forgive me.)
Last words for those of you who shall skip to my point? It's probably worth your money if you are taking the time to read others' opinions on an album you are apparently curious about. After all, it is by Billy Joel, you know.

Straight Stereo to SACD not worth the effort.......2007-04-30
No multichannel reproduction. Sounds almost exactly like a straight CD or analog Vinyl. Piping sound through two channels sounds the same no matter what format. Too much information being blended together.
This really should have been done in multichannel. There is a lot going on musically and vocally in this album and deserved better treatment tham the stereo transfer. Any stereo transfer I have listened to on SACD sounds like the regular CD.
Did not realize this was not multichannel or would not have bought it. I have "The Stranger" by Billy Joel in SACD and it is multichannel and exceptional to listen to.
This one is not, unless they re-do it in multichannel I would pass completely on buying it in SACD format
Why not multichannel?.......2005-03-15
Why is this not a multi channel mix???? Laziness? They took the time to do 52nd St and The Stranger that way...why give this one the shaft?
SACD, but it's stereo only.......2004-04-30
It's a special order, but I love the track listing so I had to buy it. And it's hard for me to say how this Stereo-only Super Audio CD compares to the CD because I dont own it. It's good, tho I just didnt feel blown away like I have been with my other SACD experiences eg. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Maybe it's because it was produced in 1998 and they hadn't perfected it back then. Dont get me wrong, "For the Longest Time" shows how it's still better than CD, but only marginally compared to other transfers.
My advice may be to hold off on buying until they re-mix the SACD and add 5.1 surround mix.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Billy Joel's Best Album Just Got Even Better!.......2005-12-12
This Japanese mini-lp replica version of Billy Joel's best album is simply a work of art! Very beautifully designed with all the lyrics included and with a sound quality remastered to perfection. Billy Joel's love letter to his second wife Christie Brinkley is just the perfect pop album. Heavily influenced by the 60's pop vocal groups and especially by Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons, no weak tracks here except perhaps the first track from the soundtrack of the Rodney Dangerfield movie "Easy Money". The best tracks are the very beautiful "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" and "Uptown Girl" although other standout tracks include the title track, "The Longest Time" and "Tell Her About It." After a classic album like this one, Billy Joel really struggled to replicate the quality he achieved here on subsequent albums and indeed never really came close. This is by far the best version of this album that is out there; great sound quality, great packaging, great songs! A must have in any cd collector's library.

Dark, arty and other worldly. Last Man on Earth is a haunting, swirly, ambient affair that shares a kinship with their February 2000 debut than it does with anything this band has done.

Cowboy Junkies + Psychadelic Dream Rock = Feathermerchants.......2007-02-14
As soon as I heard "Go For a Walk" on a local college station, I was hooked. Immersive, melancholy and surreal -- this disc was made for long drives, overcast days, late nights and headphones.
SOULFUL AND ENTERTAINING!!.......2006-06-26
I HEARD THEM PLAY AT THE NY PUBLIC THEATRE IN THE SPRING OF 2006 - AND THEY ARE LOVELY! I HAVE TWO OF THEIR CDS AND LOVE, LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their best yet; solid start to finish.......2006-04-10
Anyone remotely intrigued by the darker elements of feathermerchants' last two releases, "Unarmed Against the Dark", and "Street Theater", will be knocked out by "Last Man on Earth". Gone are the occasional upbeat, even danceable tunes like "Temporary", "Heartbreak Beat", and "Best Regards", in favor of songs in the heavier vein of "Ursuline" and "Farmers Night Out". (O.k., I suppose you could waltz to "Hitchcock Blonde" but it would be more than a little weird.) Songwriters Pete Veru and Shannon Kennedy have crafted unresolved short stories of longing, self-doubt, regret, anger, paranoia, and panic. Kennedy plays each part perfectly, her vocals layered over the always excellent feathermerchants rhythms and arrangements, highlighted by Jim Chapdelaine's spacy, ambient, and pervasive Robert Fripp-like guitar work, a new touch that truly sets this album apart from the group's earlier titles. This is one of those increasingly rare records that I can play without reaching for the remote control to skip a track here or there. Whether I'm trying to find some new insight into the fate of the songs' protagonists or just wanting to hear some quality, unique music that's literate *and* has a decent hook, this one's been in very heavy rotation at home, in the car, and at work. Good thing it's not vinyl, or I'd need a new copy already.

Stunning, but one annoying flaw.......2006-03-17
The singing is flawless and deeply moving.
But why does track 13 - Ubi Caritas - insist on starting AFTER the music has already begun. When approached from number 12, it works fine. But to cue the thing (which is why I bought this CD), you have to BACK UP to hear the song from the beginning.
I thought it was just my CD or my player - but NO, the flaw is on this web page too.
Still, this is a treasured CD.
Beautiful Tribute.......2005-08-06
This album from one of the world's greatest organists, John Scott, is one of the most beautiful musical tributes to those who lost their lives in 9/11. The Nunc Dimittis is one of the most haunting versons of this traditional prayer ever written.

A VERY SPECIAL album!!!.......2007-01-19
I listened to An Innocent Man when I was only 13 years old! My favorite song on the Album was The Longest Time, and Boy! could I ever have remembered such a song "for the longest time!!!"
Buying the album has stalled the mid-life crisis in my life. I will always appreciate Billy Joel's music--I have also heard other songs within the following decade where Billy simply moved forward IN MUSIC!
Another one of my favorite songs from the '90s is "All About Soul." Just face it, I will ALWAYS enjoy Billy Joel MUSIC!!!

Mark Morrison - Innocent Man feat. DMX.......2007-01-18
Mark Morrison's single "Innocent Man" is a memorable track and the first single from his most recent album which shares the same name. DMX (A.K.A. Earl Simmons) delivers one outstanding verse, on this cut while England's Mark Morrison (best known for Return Of The Mack) soulfully sings about moving away from the game and a negative past and settling down with a loved one and having a family. Both artists ask for God's guidance. This is a genuine topic for both artists as they have each spelt time incarcerated, feel misunderstood and have had lots of ups and downs. In one short introspective verse DMX says a lot about his own situation, while Mark Morrison's singing is on point, and the choir chorus adds another element. This is the kind of quality track that a lot of people worldwide can relate to, changing to create a better future. I was happy to see Yonker's DMX comeback strong in 2006 with an excellent album in "Year of the Dog...Again". Musically "Innocent Man" is an impressive single worth checking out.

Volume 21 of this best-selling series draws from reggae's late-'90s arsenal, each selection a certified "haul up and come again" call for listeners to get off the sofa and shake something. Buccaneer, whose patwah opera antics livelied up '98, leads off with "Bruck Out," featuring cannonball drum shots and storming six-string rock & roll action, courtesy of American group Rancid. He's followed by the Innocent Crew, the best of dancehall's tsunami wave of singer-deejay collectives, sweating that quartet dynamic here in "Impossible Mission." With "Oh Yeah," Lady Saw, reggae's favorite "outta order gal," strikes the perfect compromise between her singing and deejaying personas. Together with dancehall singer Tanya Stephens's latest wake-up call to the boyz, "Freaky Type," this set's female presence is not just an exception to the rule. Vegas, the "singjay" hero of the year, contributes two from his unbroken chain of number ones that's run the dancehall since he appeared just over a year ago. Beenie, who's de rigeur for any reggae hits collection, represents with "Gospel Time" and "Tell Me (The Remix)", featuring New York City radio personality Angie Martinez--a clear signal of stateside hip-hop's official approval. Other reggae compilation must-haves: Sizzla, Degree, and Sean Paul weigh in with their pieces of gold, and on the roots-and-culture tip, Tony Rebel and Culture--indefatigable reggae preachers--remind listeners that there's more to life than a rub-a-dub dance in a corner. --Elena Oumano

Gets Better Every Time.......1999-08-19
At first, I thought it was kinda whack. Then, the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Although it only has about 6 different beats, the tracks really came together and went with the riddim mon. If you're looking for a cd that has a whole bunch of tight beats, don't get this one. But if you want something to jam to, then get it. Peace.

Rewind and come again! I regularly play cuts from this compilation on my radio shows and the response from the listeners is massive. Don't doubt it, these songs are indeed ... "top of the file and well while versatile" dancehall selections.
