3 out of 5 stars The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

For less than $60, this seven-CD set brings the buyer almost all of Schumann's important works for solo piano performed by one of the great pianists of the last 50 years. Ashkenazy is nearly as insightful an interpreter of Schumann as he is of Chopin and the quality of these performances, which were recorded between 1984 and 1995, is generally high. The gnarled F-sharp Minor Sonata is beautifully organized, as well as emotionally compelling; "Papillons" has style, color, and flexibility; "Waldszenen" displays poetry, strength, and simplicity; the G-Minor Sonata is clearly outlined and impeccably delivered; "Kinderszenen" is played with fluidity and nuance; and "Carnaval" is delivered with bigness of conception, virility, and authority that make it among the finest ever recorded. Even on those occasions when Ashkenazy fails to reach such heights--as he does, for example, in a "Davidsbundlertanze" that is a mite too solemn and deliberate for the music's helter-skelter whimsy--his performances still achieve a distinguished standard. Nevertheless, it is Ashkenazy's misfortune that he must compete against his younger self. The readings in this set of the Symphonic Etudes, the Fantasy in C Major, "Kreisleriana," and the "Humoresque" fall short compared to those Ashkenazy recorded in the 1960s and early 1970s. In those earlier performance--reissued on a Double Decca set--the notes roll off the pianist's fingers in a dazzling and melting manner, with a singing tone and a sense of rapture, that he was unable to match 20 years later. --Stephen Wigler

Few Pianists have Explored and Recorded Such a Wealth of Keyboard Literature as Vladimir Ashkenazy. During an Association with Decca which Stretches Back Almost 40 Years Now, Ashkenazy Has Completed Cycles of Some of the Most Important Concertos (Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Bartók and Rachmaninov), as Well as an Extensive Amount of Solo Literature.two Of the Greatest Figures in 19th-century Piano Music Are Chopin and Schumann, and Music by Both Composers Has Featured, and Continues to Feature, in Ashkenazy's Recitals. He Has Recorded Almost all of Chopin Solo Works and During the Years 1984-95 Undertook a Major Survey of Schumann's Solo Literature (Some Works Including the Sinfonische Etüden, Fantasie, Kreisleriana and Humoreske) Ashkenazy Had Recorded Earlier in his Career). These Digital Recordings Are Now Presented as a Box Set for the First Time and Are an Invaluable Collection of the Composer's Most Important Keyboard Works, Performed by One of the Greatest Pianists of his Ge

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, great playing, even better price.......2007-07-03

I keep reading reviews that say things like: "Well others have played this piece better than Ashkenazy..." or "If you want a complete set of Schumann piano works then Ashkenazy is adequate and a good bargain..."

I may not have heard every version of these Schumann pieces played by every pianist in the 20th century, but I can say that Ashkenazy plays these pieces absolutely wonderfully- with both technical virtuosity and emotional depth. If you really want to cobble together a collection of the "absolute best" Schumann pieces, and spend a couple hundred dollars in the process, that's certainly your prerogative.

I just can't see how anyone can fault Ashkenazy's playing of these pieces as being lesser than others. To my ears, he plays them faultlessly. There are times during the recording where I want to stand up and applaud, others when I want to weep.

For about $5-$8 per disc (depending on who you purchase it from) you can have this wonderful music. Buy it now, and listen often!

4 out of 5 stars This is well worth the price.......2005-12-03

On the whole, this set is very good. true, ash's doesnt quite match up to pollini's recent dg david or kreis, but few do. There are still many gems here, some of which i rank as the top of the list in terms of interpretation. Firstly, waldszenen is giving an account here which in a word, is simply miraculous. Listen to how well he shapes the theme in the second piece, while most are struggling just to pull off the ferociously difficult chord jumps, yet ash does it with civility. Not even richter's fifities account is as well played or shaped. The kinderszenen is also marvelous, though not the best ever, or the second best or third(or fourth).....
But what every piece does give you, what ash himself seems to offer now, is a high standard of playing, though little over the top. But dont take that the wrong way, this set is a perfect way for anyone, even those pianophiles, to imburse or reimburse themselves in Schumann's wonderful world.

3 out of 5 stars Not Ashkenazy's forte (pun on forte intended).......2004-11-21

On the whole, Ashkenazy just does not seem to be a gifted interpreter of Schumann. These readings, to my ear, are heavy handed, pedantic, burdensome, and lacking in the mysterious joy that pervades so much of the work of the Romantic master. Some performances are OK. The Sinfonische Etuden would probably the best of the lot. But in works like Carnaval, the Novelletten, Faschingschwank aus Wien, and the Kinderszenen Ashkenazy to my liking totally misses the target.

I much prefer the more introspective approach of Arrau, or the wild and intriguing Pollini. Even Barenboim comes closer to the heart of Schumann than Ashkenazy.

The recorded sound is often disappointing also. The sound on some pieces is so muddy I thought the microphone was behind a wall.

5 out of 5 stars beautifully played, wonderful and overlooked pieces.......2003-04-29

This set is a remarkable value. Yes, you could choose some individual performances of certain works that are better, but for the price, this is a remarkable set. Ashkenazy is sympathetic to these wonderful and often overlooked solo piano compositions. Highly recommended.

New York State's God Street Wine is another improvising rock Group that built a strong live following in the "jam-band" underground without major-label help. After God Street Wine sold out the 1,000-seat Irving Plaza in New York on its own, Geffen not only signed the band but also offered them their own custom label, Eleven Records. After three self-released albums, God Street Wine's Geffen debut, $1.99 Romances, separates the group from the jam-band pack by using Steely Dan as its main model rather than the usual choices of the Grateful Dead or the Allman Brothers. --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars God Street Jam........2003-07-07

To the March 29th review, look in the insert for cover information. This is a good listen, but I always think of them as being alot better live. I saw them twice, and they are a good band to watch with a beer in your hand. As far as "1.99 Romances" goes, it's the first thing I put in when I want to hear a toe tappin' jam band......right after "Blues Traveler", "Dave Matthews", "Currently Nameless", "Phish", "Spin Doctors", and "The Dead". Really though, they're not bad. It's worth at least $1.99.

5 out of 5 stars Cover art?.......2003-03-30

I really like this band, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me more about the cover art? Who painted it, etc? I wouldn't mind getting a print....

Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Good to the Last Drop.......2001-12-18

Man, I was AT these shows, and I still can't believe how great this disc sounds! Any fan who's seen GSW @ the Wetlands can tell you that those shows were special, but the "farewell" shows just blew my mind. The disc showcases great tracks from all three nights, starting with one of the most spirited and all-out "Wendy's" I've ever heard. (Gives me chills!) Also worth mentioning are old favorites "Goodnight Gretchen," "Borderline," "Mantoloking," "Water," and "Diana." As a special treat, the boys pulled out there most infamous and out-there cover of all time, Madonna's "Express Yourself." It was certainly a gift to those lucky fans who heard the earlier version, way back in 1996.

Last but not least, these shows feature GSW founding members Tomo on drums, and Jon Bevo on keys, as well as their excellent replacements Aubrey Dayle and Peter Levin, respectively. Not to mention the times when they were all playing together, with all those guests up there...I was amazed that many people could fit on that tiny stage.

The recordings are direct-from-the-board ADATs, though there may be a bit of post-production work in there to clean up the track transfers. All GSW fans should own this disc, even if you've already got these sets.

4 out of 5 stars Easily GSW's most solid work from top to bottom........1999-03-25

In an age when non-talented, "3 chords in 3 minutes" bands are cashing in on nieve listeners, it's refreshing to be able to find a band that truly gets it. If your looking for a band with traditional rock, blues, and funk influences, then GSW is a band worth your time. $1.99 delivers with a sprinkling of all the above styles with killer jams that make most pop bands look like sallys. Start with $1.99 and work your way through the catelog. But for the best GSW experience, SEE THEM LIVE!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......1999-01-15

This is a great CD, one of GSWs best. All the song are good, compared to some CD with only a few. Live, GSW is great and their other CDs are highly recommended

    2 out of 5 stars Dull.......2007-03-09

The previous reviewer was right about Faure's piano music being of "introspective moods, rich chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty", however, I heard very little of that in Stott's playing.

If lifelessness is what equates introspection for the critics that praised these recordings, then Stott's Faure deserves every award it's gotten. The fact is, her playing seriously lacks the "chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty" that is so important for Faure, and the only reason these recordings are so highly praised is because of patriotic bias. Even the Naxos bargain offerings by Volondat is much better.

5 out of 5 stars Penguin Rosette Award Winner.......2006-03-22

Faure's piano music is autobiographical in which the earlier pieces exude a more simple, upbeat optimism which yields to greater austerity, ambiguity, unpredictability and melancholy in the later works. Yet, his music always retains its civility and french beauty in spite of emotionalal, tempestuous episodes. If you gravitate towards piano music of introspective moods, rich chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty, then definately consider this rather equisite music by one of the more humble composers of the magical salon, romantic era of Paris.

Pianist Kathryn Stott seems to have the type of personna and style that is well-suited for the gentile, urbane and somewhat understated music of Faure. Ms. Stott has focused her career primarily on the chamber and solo repertoire, and within that, mostly on 19th-century French music. She is one of today's most prominent proponents of French music - so much so that the French government awarded her special recognition as such. Some of her work includes performances with the ever-popular Yo-Yo Ma ("La Belle Epoque") as well as several for Hyperion (whose artists tend to only be of the "upper shelf" category).

Even hearing a few pieces of this landmark set reveals the typical emphasis on elegance and beauty within French music in general. The Penguin Guide awarded this four-CD set a PENGUIN ROSETTE citing while Gramophone gave it a "Critic's Choice" award - both of which certainly says something positive if you are thinking of purchasing it. Also each of the four CD's contains a generous 70+ minutes with the typically clear and brilliant Hyperion sound. Again, if you like solo piano music that coaxes and caresses with nuance rather than shouts to make its point, then Stott's complete Faure set here should give a lifetime of refreshment and inspiritation. Here are some other mainstream press reviews on this CD (also see Stott's other single-disc highlight CD for more Amazon reviews).

'One of the most purely pleasurable releases of the year so far. The playing is intelligent, persuasive, Ioving, and the music reaches far beyond the standard boundaries of fin de si?cle French salon style. Four outstanding discs' (The Independent)

'Sumptuously recorded. A true and dedicated Francophile [Kathryn Stott] is clearly among the more stylish and intriguing of all young pianists' (Gramophone)

'She deserves an honoured place beside the most distinguished Faure exponents ... A major achievement in every way' (Classic CD)

'A tremendous achievement' (BBC Music Magazine)

'A major contribution to the recorded literature of French piano music, strongly recommended' (Fanfare, USA)

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Faure..........2004-06-16

The late nocturnes of Faure are virtually his best works for piano solo. One can see why Faure is sometimes called "the French Brahms," for he makes great use of the lower registers of the piano--for which Brahms also had a great affinity. Still, Faure also has a kind of luminescent airiness in the bright upper registers--which is something of a "classic" characteristic of much purely French music.

Faure's nocturnes have a meditative ambience. It's thought that because Faure himself was ambidextrous his pieces frenquently seem to offer this step-wise balance alternating between the hands: in some passages, the effect is quite hypnotic.

Frenchman Jean Martin has a real handle on these works: he lets them breathe fully, and his timing is very steady and ambient--which is exactly what these pieces call for. Some might consider Martin's realizations "slow," but he's brilliant where he needs to be, and slower is better than faster: after all, this is not a footrace.

    The recorded sound is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Bedtime Music.......2001-12-01

Unlike the nocturnes of Chopin, or even Field (whose compositions redefined the 'nocturne' as night time evocations), Faure's nocturnes are more like meditative mood pieces, rather than the restrained forward moving compositions of the former. Martin elicits a wonderfully even tone in his playing, bright and bassy, but the midtones are recorded a little high. There are times I wish he wouldn't swoon so much in his playing, and allow the natural ambiguity of Faure's music to speak for itself, while concerning his playing more on making the pieces more propulsive. This makes a few of the nocturnes, such as the 7th and the 9th lag to my ear. A faster pace with less syncopation on the rythms (i.e. less noticeable rubato) would allow his music to be more affective to me, and less narcoleptic. I'm just being picky though, it is a very good purchase, for the price, sound quality, and beautiful music. Faure is in that tricky spot between musical movements, though the more I listen to him, the more I pinpoint him as being an impressionist. The hardest kind of piano music to pull off, so in that view, Martin's approach could the most valid, though I feel most the harmonies in the nocturnes would sound more effective "glistening" rather than "glowing."

5 out of 5 stars Masterpieces, masterfully played.......2000-07-22

This is the first recording of Faure's piano music I ever bought. These are later works of the composer and can be somewhat more elusive than his early compositions, but Jean Martin's playing is at once precise and expressive. I now have all of the Naxos recordings of Faure's piano music and I vastly prefer the two CDs of Nocturnes played by Martin to the CD's with Volondat playing. I highly recommend these recordings to anyone.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......1999-08-27

I really love these CDs. Kathryn Stott is a most remarkable pianist. Her touch is flexible and musicianship is peerless. She brings out the essence of these elusive pieces. I heard several other pianists play Faure, but Stott is overall most impressive. Very well recorded also. Strongly recommended for anyone who loves music of Faure.
