Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Genuine bonus track.......2006-10-29
Differences in sound between the CD versions of the original album may be significant (although I think the original LP has superior sound overall) but for me the best thing about this CD is the earlier version of the song Coney Island Baby.
1. It is beautifully recorded, mixed and mastered.
2. I like the grittier sound to Reed's voice with lyrics more engagingly vernacular and conversational in delivery (rather than rehearsed umpteen times). The originally released version, although a work of art, always came across to me as a little too sappy in parts, particularly the ending with the (probably rehearsed) emotional catch in the voice.
I'm so glad this happened - I've now got closure on this great song!
If you're in any way a fan of Reed's art you gotta hear this! Thank you Lou Reed (vocals, guitar), Doug Yule (guitar, bass), Michael Fonfara (keys), Bob Meday (drums) and all others responsible.
Mostly a Success.......2006-10-29
The sound on this is great, especially when played on speakers that have clear highs. The three new bonus tracks are a great addition, and show what a different record this would have been if the original sessions had panned out. My only complaint is the choice to include the three songs from the box set. Yes, they sound sharper here, but I would have preferred three more unreleased outtakes or live tracks. What about the early version of "I Wanna Be Black" or "You Can Dance" (at least one live soundboard or multitrack of this exists on bootleg)? Or how about the harrowing live version of "Kicks" from the 1976 Roxy show that "Heroin" on the box set is taken from?
Complaints aside, the treatment of the original album is great and worth the price alone. Maybe we can cross our fingers and hope that other material is being held back for a rarities box set in the future. We can only hope, right?
Not as good as the Buddah releases but...........2006-09-29
I bought this new version because of the great job Buddah Records did a few years back with Rock and Roll Heart and The Bells in remastering. I was hoping for more of the same from RCA/Legacy but it's not quite as good.
Whereas on those albums you can clearly hear every intricant sound in it's full glory (sounds are present on the Buddah releases that you can't hear on the originals that will just blow you away), the only thing I really noticed is that the overall sound level is higher and the sound more crisp. That may be in part that more care was taken in the original RCA release (Rock and Roll Heart and The Bells were released on Arista)and not much left to be improved upon. What I don't like is the high end hiss is still clearly audible (especially noticable on Coney Island Baby) but that may be from the original recording.
The bonus tracks are well worth the reinvestment though. Yes, three were on Between Thought and Expression but there is some improvement on those. The bonus version of She's my Best Friend is absolutely killer.
All in all a great disc and nice packaging make this well worth the money.
Amazing job -- get this!.......2006-09-28
Great sound, and the 6 bonus tracks are really quite terrific -- 3 of them were available on his box set or as a b-side or on comps, and those are tremendous. Then there are 3 others that were never before available and they're unbelievable, too!
I don't know how this snuck into the CD store, but it's a definite must-have for Reed fans, and it's one of his best solo efforts if you're just getting into him.
huge sound improvement.......2006-09-22
you will be floored, the sound improvement over the original release is unreal....this is one of his best...this and "blue mask"

The Bopper lives!.......2005-02-13
On the anniversary of J.P. Richardson's tragic death, I wrote a piece for The Bopper's hometown newspaper, the Beaumont (TX) Enterprise, about his life, his family and his legacy. These songs are an excellent starting place to learning more about the Bopper -- Richardson's jive-talking, flamboyant alter ego. And if this album gets you more interested in The Bopper's short life (he was only 28 when he died with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens) then you are in for a treat. Did you know that in 1958 The Bopper foresaw the advent of "music videos" (his term), the necessary visuality of rock and roll, and even filmed some of his songs to pitch his idea to Mercury Records? He did, and that's just a small part of the complex person "the other guy on the plane" was.
Bopper's Boogie Woogie.......2004-06-17
The Big Bopper was true original of rock 'n' roll. Before he made his first record he was DJ on KTRM radio. He recorded his first song in 1954 and decided to become known as The Big Bopper (after the dance named The Bop which was popular at the time). He died in an accident with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, 28 years old. His songs have funny lyrics (about "Big Bopper's Wedding", "Little Red Riding Hood",...), and is there someone who doesn't know "Chanitily Lace". He even wrote a few songs for other performers ("Running Bear" for Johnny Preston), and George Jones had a big hit with his "White Lightnin'"
An American Original!.......2001-08-14
Several different styles here, some definitley better than others. If you like Chantilly Lace, or the Purple People Eater, this has some very good cuts on it.
The big bopper was THE MAN.......2001-01-09
The tragic death of the biggest bopper around is made even more tragic by the brilliant tunes and clever lyrics contained on this cd. It was the death of not only a young man with a family, but of a young musician with a future. No matter what music you're accustomed to, this cd is wholly enjoyable. The songs are relaxing, funny, and fun. It's not only good music, but it's a good time. One cannot help but fall in love with his endearing laugh, his excited voice, and his cheerful greeting so often heard throughout his songs: "HELLOOOO BABY!!" Like a fine wine, these songs only become better with age, as it is sure that the Big Bopper would have too, if he had had the chance.
It's The Truth Ruth!.......2000-07-04
This is a great collection. I bought this CD because I never heard anything but Chantilly Lace, and let me tell you every song is just as good. If not better!

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03
The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!
Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02
Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.
She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.
She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.
Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.
"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.
Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.
She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.
Grade= A
Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27
Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!
....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18
I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!
Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10
... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19
I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.
Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22
Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.
Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22
I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!
Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04
I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.
a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05
I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.
But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).
And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.
Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.
I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

You will feel like you are there!.......2006-03-20
I love this album I remember my grandmother getting it for me for Christmas in 1991, it was the first CD I ever played in my first CD player on that Christmas morning. I love every track on it. I do however disagre with the previous reviewer regarding the placement of The only studio track "Shining Star." I beleive it was good to have in the middle it was sort of an "intermission" halfway through the album.
FOREVER A FAN !.......2006-02-28
What can I say! Michael and the guys know how to deliver! Awesome songs - great music! Makes me feel like I was there - in the front row!! You rock my world!!
Miss you Michael... may your voice live on forever...
I missed out big time...........2005-10-31
...on not seeing INXS live, from what I have heard they are amazing in concert. How could I do myself such an injustice? Listening to this CD reminds me of just what I missed, though I still really enjoy listening to it. Based on other reviews it is probably not the best live CD there is out there, but I still think it's good. I really like the opener, New Sensation which was from their Wembley Stadium concert, and the closer What You Need which is my personal favorite, Kirk's saxophones being the highlight for me. I also like Shining Star which is a studio track, one of my all time favorite songs by INXS that is only available on this CD. All in all very good live sampler of INXS, an essential for any INXS fan. Definite proof they were/are an awesome live band. And fortunately, finally I will get to witness that myself in the coming year.
INXS Live Baby Live.......2005-10-30
In case no one knows country Superstar Keith Urban is on background vocals and guitar on this cd. He is a musical genius and a beautiful person inside and out. God Bless Keith Urban always.....
The Greatest Showman and Singers.......2005-09-06
I have been a struggling musician for 30 years. It hurt so badly when Michael H. and Kurt C. deprived the world and us fans of their future music when they took the easy way out by committing suicide. We need them right now so bad in these hard times to give us the light of their songs. Now all we have are these masterpieces left behind like Mozart, Beethoven, or the Beatles. This cd, "Listen Like Thieves", is one of those INXS masterpieces that they could be creating today had Michael not done the ultimate fade. I love this band and hope they take the world by storm again when the winning lead singer is belting out the hits. Good health, Peace, and Love to the INXS family. Bearhawk Folsom

ABSOLUTE ROCKSTAR.......2002-01-14
You heard it here first. BOB and the band are destined for world domination, it is only a matter of time. have heard the band live and they never cease to amaize. they can sustain your attention for hours on end and just make you jive to the groove. buy the freebird album as well...even better if you can imagine that.
poppin! Austin band lights a fire under your pants.......2000-08-17
I have seen this band out when I am visiting in Austin, along with all of their other bands, the Scabs, and Lonelyland where they play at the local Saxon Club every monday night. These guys are tight, and the vocal ability that Bob Schneider brings to all his work with his talented posse is amazing. You have to have an open mind and an ability to see all the fun facets of all their integration of styles. Look past the dirty words. Who cares? You hear more language stuck on the freeway in heavy traffic anyway. Check out Lonelyland as well.
Clean It Up.......2000-06-25
While the musical talent of this band is evident, from the first note, the lyric writing has something to strive for. While not every line has a 4 letter word in it, the Ugly Americans (aka Scabs) make up for it by degrading women, talking about rape (how it is okay) and the like. If you have a mixer that can eliminate the voice track, buy this album, otherwise it would be wise to avoid it.
Best Live Show Ever!.......1999-09-28
Unlike the most watered down bands, the Ugly Americans stand alone. Not only are these guys very talented musicians, they are also very talented artists. Bob Schneiders' vocals are what Rock'n'Roll is suppose to be: fun, exciting, in your face and sometimes down right offensive. I've seen these guys live atleast 20 times and it is never boring. No looking at your watch to see what time it is. They also have some CD's under the group name of "The Scabs." However, Amazon.com has CD's from some other band called "The Scabs." Go to uglyamericans.com, and there is a link to buy the real s**t! If you ever get a chance to see them live, don't miss the best show you'll ever see. It would be worth taking a trip to Austin where they play every Tuesday @ midnight at Antone's.

From the Chicago School of Guitar.......2005-12-25
I had never heard of Harvey Mandel until I saw him in a small Philadelphia venue, called the Bijou Cafe, around 1978. He appeared with John Mayall.
Harvey really performed dutifully for the rock/blues legend, John Mayall...but there was a point where the crowd departed its attention from the headliner and was screaming HARVEY...HARVEY.....!!!!! Mayall relented and Mandel stepped up.
What a memorable moment.
While I enjoy this album very much, I depart with most of the praise found on this page. It is more in the Jeff Beck vein than the Roy Buchanan, Elvin Bishop, or Rory Gallagher style. I enjoy much more the rock/blues sound than the fuzzy, hard-guitar jazz of Beck's "Wired".
Technically, this album is fine, but just know what it is your buying. If you favor Beck over Bishop, then buy it. If you feel contrary to that, then go buy something else. If you are ambivalent, err on the side of saving your money for something you are more sure of.
All best. Lee
One of the all time best guitar groove albums!!.......2004-04-08
Harvey Mandels acid-based groove meanderings are awesome! This disk is true raw energy from a man Carlos Santana holds in high esteem. I mean there's congas on this, the guitar is WAY in the forefront and everything is instrumental! Mr. Mandel plays a LOT of guitar on this disk - and he;s real good - sure he sometimes repeats himself and isn't necessarily "fluid" but its got some fire behind it. This is the kind of album that would really go over big in a retro-60's college party playing right after "in-a-gadda-da-vida". It simply JAMS! Big!!! Real big. Like Cream or something like that. I hear a lot of influences in Harvey - Duane Eddy, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Clapton - its a very good album but be prepared to go back to the middle of 1969 on this one - right from the get-go all the way to the end. I'd call it acid rockin blues. Damn good stuff!
Instrumental Goodies From Neglected Guitarist.......2001-03-31
This album is my favorite Harvey Mandel album. It is entirely instrumental. Harvey Mandel played at the original Woodstock Festival with Canned Heat and on the Rolling Stones "Black and Blue" album among others. His music is a mixture of rock, blues and jazz. He has done sessions playing all of the types of music. He has much in common with such guitarists as Jeff Beck and Roy Buchanan who also play a similar type of music. All three of these guitarists are not good vocalists and are better suited for making instrumental albums. While his playing is not as technical as either Jeff Beck's or Roy Buchanan's styles, there is still much to enjoy. Harvey makes excellent use of the wah wah and other effects on this album. His playing is fluid and takes some interesting turns on occasion. Harvey Mandel was one of the first guitarists to utilize the "two-hand tapping" method of playing (Shangrenade album). This method became influential later in the seventies and eighties. My favorite cuts include the title track, "Freedom Ball" and "El Stinger" but every track is great. The band is very cohesive on this album and work well together. Larry Taylor a bandmate of Mandel's from his days in Canned Heat and John Mayall's band plays bass throughout this disk. It is hard to believe that Harvey Mandel's instrumental albums with the exception of the first album were not better sellers at the time they were released. Fans of progressive instrumental guitar music should purchase this album as soon as possible before it goes out of print again.
Listening is like opening a time capsule.......2000-02-04
Harvey Mandel speaks directly to listeners on Baby Batter, so it is improtant to listen. The songs are simple yet elegant. Nearly 30 years ago, a fuzz box and a Cry Baby were near the limit of what most players used, and rarely was a wah-wah used more artfully than on this album/disc. The lead lines and harmonies on Baby Batter should be heard by every amateur guitarist who is trying to get a feel for what soloists of the era were up to. Whereas it is easy to see why the all-instrumental Baby Batter is not everyone's cup of tea, it is hard to believe it doesn't have a larger cult following. Rock with a solid dose of blues and a tart pinch of jazz. Try it. You'll like it.

i have bought this album almost before thirty years together with *Snake* and *Get Off In Chicago*. As I Said in *one line review* this is the best instrumental guitar album i*ve ever heard. Also, the other albums of harvey Mandel is exellent. Thank You Harvey!

Stylistics always good.......2005-10-10
Not their overall best CD but ranks up there. First and second albums still rank at the top. My favorite here is "There's No Reason". I'm a hardcore Stylistics fan so they pretty much always deliver in my book. Classy act.
" A Timeless Classic ".......2005-07-24
This is, for me, their finest album/CD. Without question, it's a great collection of songs, from top to bottom-period. It also happens to be their last with the great Thom Bell and the late Linda Creed. My favorite songs on this CD are, " Could This Be The End " , " Make It Last " ,
" Pay Back Is A Dog " , and certainly, " You Make Me Feel Brand New " . I must say, I like most of their material, though nothing they did before or sense, quite measures up to this standard. The best they've ever done. Most worthy of five stars.
Perfection.......2005-06-04
Perfection is the only way to describe this album. Tracks 1-6 have been in my head since I was a kid listening to Pops blowing it through the sound system. Should've been 20x platinum.
MASTERPIECE OF SWEET SOUL MUSIC.......2001-09-08
The Stylistics is, maybe, the most original group of the seventies. Elegance and quality are characteristcs of these guys! This album hasn't just the mega-hit "You make me feel brand new", it has too "Pay back is a dog", "There's no reason", "Rockin'roll baby" and a team of songs that will make you dream!
I have the original vinil and hear it since the seventies! Who will replace The Stylistics nowadays?
Classic and Rare Stylistics...........2001-03-27
....Philly Soul at its best. My two cents is that the Stylistics will go down in history as the greatest vocal groups of its; generation. Why? Not just because of the classic "You Make Me Feel Brand New", but those jams like "Pay Back is a Dog" that means a great deal to those who grew up with them, but you cannot find or hear anywhere unless you buy the CD....
