Higher Circles was formed in the summer of 1983, and have remained more or less intact throughout the years. They draw their influences from an eclectic group of sources and somehow manage to blend them into something that is truly their own.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

Masterful!.......2005-06-15

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Hawkwind - 'Space Ritual' (One Way) 2-CD.......2004-08-23

It's quite simple,really.'Space Ritual' is one of the BEST live albums ever made.Although Hawkwind have come close to perhaps matching the quality and the brilliance of this 2-lp reissued,of course on 2-CD,the band really hasn't managed to release any title that surpasses 'Space Ritual'.Keep in mind,they've released PLENTY of live CD's.Their 'Yule Ritual' comes close.As everyone probably knows,this title features the historic/classic Hawkwind line-up of Brock,Turner,Dettmar,Lemmy,Calvert,King and Dik Mik.110% pure space rock,1972 style.More than deserves a hallowed place in your music collection.

Okay, let's try this....these guys were aiming for a technically oriented Floydian freakout, and succeeded; but while reaching for that lofty top shelf, seemed to bounce off of a box of Deep Purple which rubbed off some glitz, careened into some Kraftwerk instrumentation and somehow managed to come out of the pantry married to Spinal Tap! The result is PURE 60's LSD psycho cheese of the highest order. In this case, ya won't need the acid to get the laughs as the delivery here is enough to draw happy tears from frickin' Janet Reno! THIS stuff would be right at home as a soundtrack for Plan 9 From Outer Space or maybe The WORST Of Dr. Who.....
I'm gonna assume that this is intentionally funny cuz NO ONE can do pure schlock of this order with a straight face. I'm no less than passionate about psych music and have tripped well over 150 times over the last thirty years with lots and lots of exposure to the heavy musical she-it and found this here as a reference from another reviewer as I searched for Jefferson Airplane's "Bathing At Baxter's". I'm happy with Space Ritual and recommend this for any fans of heavy psych looking for something new and something old at the same time. They don't make them like this any more!
Once I find some goodies and listen to this again, I'll most likely change this to five stars. Burning Man here I come!

A timeless Hawkwind classic.......2001-11-05

I originally purchased this as a vinyl album in 1973, when I was a student at Sheffield Polytechnic. Although I have lots of other Hawkwind albums from the 70's and 80's (which I still listen to and enjoy)I never tire of Space Ritual. Hawkwind's sound, thanks to Dave Brock, is so unique that no other band comes close when it comes to space/fantasy rock.

Hawkwind at its best. Live, raw and jamming. This was album recorded before the accountants and investors took over the music business and bands were allowed to follow their muse where ever it took them. Great stuff!

Mysterious Dark Music, With Lyrics To Match!.......2006-02-24

Found this CD while I was searching Amazon's web site for dark and moody prog rock in the Van Der Graaf gerne. I got 2 listings, Nervewerks, and Higher Circles. The latter sounded like the most interesting of the 2 based on the reviews I'd read. There wasn't any info on where they were from, so I took a chance and ordered this CD. Good call! This isn't exactly prog, it's more a mixture-a blending-of prog, metal, ambient, and melodic music more on the heavery and darker side of the musical spectrum. As a rule I don't like heavy metal/death/Gothic/or American bands. I don't think that they're very creative, musically, or lyricly. This band is from California, and I found this out after I ordered the CD. I didnt think I was going to like it very much, I grew up listening to all the old prog(YES,GENESES,ELP,ect,) and now I love bands like Arena, Shadowland, PO90, Marillion(Fish era),ect. But this band got my attention. The first 2 tracks are instrumental. They are both short tracks but set the mood of the CD and lets the listener know whats to come musically. The 3rd track "Some Empty Heaven" opens with the lyrics; "THE FIRST TIME I KILLED I FELT WHOLE, BUT FEELINGS FADE TO EMPTY HEARTS, LIKE DUSK TO DARK". This definitely tells the listener it's not going to be a happy 51:22 mint. musical journey. Quite the opposite. Although this is not a concept album, its songs and over all themes are very grim. The lyrical subject matter is either about murder, seeing life through the eyes of a sadistic stalker, coming to terms with the fact that you only have 11 seconds to live, loss, and life in the bleakest sense imaginable. This is not one for around the family dinner table. Like I said, it's not prog and I don't like U.S. bands, but the songs are well thought out, physically and lyricly. This band will appeal to people who like their heavy metal/prog metal on the lighter side. The same can be said for those who like their prog rock/prog metal this way also. And I use the term lighter only to point out that some songs might start out slow or sound like there might be glimmer of hope in them somewhere, but there is'nt. I love all the old and all the new prog bands out there. This band, although not quite prog, has some great potential. They are a 3 piece from CA. They have been around for a long time,(20 years according to the net,) and have only put out one album. I hope there's more. If you like the darker side of music and are looking for something different, try this CD. It may be grim and harder than what you are used to, it was for me, but it also got my musical attention. If you like old VDGG, FLOYD(Meddle/Atom Heart Mother period minus the orchestra,) and just really fantastic progressive rock, check this band out!! A great composition.......2002-12-06

I was given this disc by a friend of mine who visited Hungary; he just suddenly put the brand new, celophane-coated CD in my hand.

I listened to the CD once. Repeated it again. Then again. It's... good. There are hardly any words to describe it better, than that it's good progressive rock! The instruments and lyrics are in a very well-done harmony. The pace, the rhythm of the music changes throughout the Ritual -- performed also in an outstanding way.

Two thumbs and two big toes up, it's my current favourite.

Higher Circles one of prog rock/rock's better bands!.......2002-06-19

I am impressed with the musicianship and songwriting of this band- as another review said, they take obvious influences of Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, and create their own unique blend of beauty and bits of darkness and even mystery- The lyrics are awesome, the artwork is phenomenal, now I am just waiting for the tour!

Great album. Awesome artwork. Sounds a little like Rush sometimes musically. Vocals sound a little like a cross between Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel. Great drummer. Waiting for the next one...

Thanks guys, this is a great album. Sorry its only 4, i never give out 5's or you would have gotten one. But really, this thing is great. Good mix of mood and story of a Floyd album with the style and strength of Queensryche. And yes, a little Dream Theatre electronica in there to, but you managed to tie it all up with your own flow. fantastic instrumental work. I like to see new bands that clearly know how to do things right, and yet have thier own stuff they want to play around with. The only gripe i have is that i cant seem to find you guys. are you playing anywhere? if so please post it on your web site, i can imagine a show would be awesome, if you didnt screw it up like most bands do at least.

Virtuoso musician, inventor, and visionary, Mark Deutsch releases an extraordinary new CD that debuts his epic composition, Fool, and features his revolutionary new instrument, the Bazantar, for which he has received a U.S. patent.

The Bazantar is a 38-stringed instrument, possessing 29 sympathetic, 4 drone, and 5 melody strings. Its engineering concept radically advances preexisting "sympathetic instrument" configurations. Robert Wilucki, a luthier who worked on the instrument, remarks, "It is genius what Mark has done with his invention--totally unique." The Bazantar's sound is multilayered and extraordinarily resonant. These characteristics, combined with Deutsch's unique style and prodigious technique, create the perception of several instruments being played simultaneously.

Fool..., the first recording to showcase the Bazantar, also employs the sitar and various percussion instruments. As a composer, Mark Deutsch has integrated many diverse elements into this work. He weaves Indian music's sublime melodic contouring with the panoramic architecture of classical music, universal mathematical principles with a jazz musician's commitment to spontaneous creation, and avant-garde's visceral convulsions with folk tradition's graceful simplicity to create a musical gestalt that defies simplistic categorization.

The Bazantar and sitar tracks are live solo performances. There is no overdubbing, looping, or other studio effects on these tracks. Rarely attempted in today's environment of digital manipulation, this method of recording requires substantial skill by both engineer and musician. The result is a work that reveals the creative process with a vitality remarkable in character.

Hybrid Vigor.......2002-03-30

I am fresh from a concert presentation of gryphon-like beast the bazantar. The versatility of this instrument, in Mr. Deutch's most able hands, is quite remarkable. This recording is superb in its ability to place one inside the music. From this recording, from the concert, one gets a sense of vast possibilities and expectations for this instrument.

Fool is a musical exploration of a life as a spiritual path, one version at any rate, a rather saturnine version. I look forward to Mr. Deutsch putting out further recordings so he can expand the mystical vision with some of the irreverence of which he is also capable. Mysticism demands deconstruction to transcend itself. Fool is also a lesson in musicality. Part of the joy of this music is that it feels both unique and connected. We love to place things in categories (we cannot not do this in fact) and while I sit with this I have both the Baudelairean sense of plunging into the abyss of the new yet resonance with and anchoring to many traditions and expressions. As I am writing this I notice the second movement is playing, titled Persival. It includes a golden-ratioed figure-eight-like symbol. Interesting conjunction. Pesrival means "through the middle" or living in the points of conjunction, Whitman's "both in and out of the game. The bazantar is itself a point of intersection.

Transcendant Visionary Music: beyond the beyond.......2000-01-07

This music is unique and certainly difficult to describe with words. But I'll give it a go: With his Bazantar, Mark masterfully creates sound and timbre that entwine the exquisite aural resonance with cryptic mystical conjurings, beckoning the mind to relax and open and explore a transcendant tapestry of emotive texture and visionary trance.

By the 4th movement I found myself far removed from my sense of self in the room. The space around me grew very large and intense. This music is very interesting and penetrating. The fact that this music is of solo performance it astounding to me!

Stravinski done right.......2006-07-07

I have owned this CD (but issued as EMI Eminence) for many years and was surprised to see no reviews. Mackerras is not the name that pops to mind when someone says "Stravinski"; it is either Monteux or Stravinski himself. This is Mackerras and the London SO from 1987. Monteux was principal conductor at London 1961-64. This CD shows that 20 years later the London SO had not forgot how it was done. I prefer this to Stravinki's Columbia recordings and to Monteux's mono recording for Philips. I know you are skeptical; all I can say is that it will not cost you much to prove me wrong! What a pity it cannot be re-released on SACD (EMI has still not licensed DSD). For your trouble, you will also get the fabulous "fireworks" that Stravinski wrote for his teacher Rimski. Not enough? Mackerras ends the CD with two of the best things Stravinski wrote: "circus polka" (the ballet for a young elephant) and "greeting prelude" (Stravinski's serial take on happy birthday to you for the 80-year-old Monteux). OK, I admit that 40 minutes is kind of slim for a CD these days, but you will not be short-changed. For once, EMI actually gets the sound right.
