4 out of 5 stars Can't get that song out of my head..........2007-07-09

I've been trying to find this band for the longest time. I've heard the song "Love Plus One" several times, and could never figure out which band was behind it. But, no more am I lost! I have found the band behind the song and I'm happy to say that...I LOVE THIS BAND! I love all 80s music. However, I'd never heard of this band, and the songs on this disc just makes me happy. Their stuff is classic! :) The music is fun, funky, poppy and flavored with that '80s sound' galore. This album is definitely a must have for any 80s music buff!

5 out of 5 stars More Like This, Please!.......2007-04-23

Haircut 100 utilized horns like nothing I've heard in pop music before or since, and they gave the world this unique and brassy record before their star set forever into obscurity.

Their only hit isn't a very good indicator of what the rest of 'Pelican West' is like; it's inescapably catchy but doesn't have the lavish horn-driven sound of the rest of the cuts. Not that I'm criticizing; if I were in a band I would want recognition and riches as well! It is unfortunate that so many misguided snobs equate 'Success' with 'Selling Out', and I would hate to be misunderstood to be saying that "Love Plus One' is inferior because it succeeded so well. Should you decide to purchase this CD, you will be delighted to discover that it is filler-free, original, and brimming with true creativity.

The wry humor doesn't hurt, either. "When will life become a major film?" When, indeed? If you missed this the first time around do yourself a favor and pick it up now.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Classic.......2007-03-13

the first time i heard haircut 100 was in the summer of 1982.How laid back everything and everyone was in those days, and this album fit right in to that carefree attitude everyone seemed to have. You heard haircut 100 everywhere,on the beach, blasting out of car windows, blaring out of bars and nightclubs, everyone had this album.I will classify this album as pure escapism. When the world of today starts shattering your nerves, throw haircut 100s Pelican West in your car stereo roll down the windows, and let your cares fly right out the window,YOU WILL GET HOOKED!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Pop Music!.......2007-01-15

This is the kind of album you listen to when you want a nice, friendly pick-me-up. It is infectious pop music at it's best. Even now, decades after it's release, it has a freshness that jumps out of your speakers. A classic for the ages!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the greatest New Wave album out there........2006-06-04

I'm a hardcore Duran Duran fan. I breathe Depeche mode. I can't last a day without listening to New Order's 'Technique'. So for an 80s fanatic like me to call Haircut 100's album 'Pelican West' the greatest New Wave album out there is quite bizzare. I guarantee you, my friend, give this album a listen and you won't soon forget Nick Heyward and Haircut 100.

The album (and the band) is known for two songs in particular; 'Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)' and 'Love Plus One'. But there's so much more to this album. The depth of this album is quite phenomenal, to say the least. The marimba on Love Plus one, the flawless arrangement on Lemon Firebrigade, and the electric piano in Marine Boy all add up to one beautiful soundscape the enters one ear and doesn't come out the other. No, it stays with you the whole rest of your life. Now, I'm not old enough to have been there when this band first came out. I'm not even old enough to have seen them break up! But I know good music. This whole album screams 'Beach Music'. Buy this album and please don't skip a track. You need to witness the journey fold out for yourself.

There was a time in the early '80s when cutting-edge English bands, many of them high on the multicultural pop innovations of Kid Creole & the Coconuts, began getting down with horn sections and tropically tinged rhythms. It was all very short-lived, but, for a moment at least, bands like Haircut 100 seemed like they might win out over the more pandering likes of Duran Duran. Led by gifted singer-songwriter Nick Heyward, Haircut 100 sweated up their cardigans on this, their first album of pop pleasantries and extremely blue-eyed soul. The horns are cracking, and such tracks as "Fantastic Day," "Baked Bean," "Favorite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)," and the stretched-out "Nobody's Fool" are all great fun. File under guilty pleasures from a more innocent time. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection of impossibly happy music.......2007-01-11

I love this group, this album, their videos. If you want some outstanding poolside music, BUY THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Breezy Summer Music.......2005-03-29

Man, when this album was hot, I was 18-years-old and working as a lifeguard in Nebraska. (Yes, we have pools there ...) This was the theme album for my summer. It's light yet substantial, and every time I hear it, I'm either at the pool, or in my Dad's 1971 Dodge Polara with the windows wide open. There was no other music like it at the time, and it's so catchy, you can't help but love it - even it you don't want to. My cassette's worn out, so I'm coughing up for the CD. Haircut 100 is my Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Early 80's classic.......2004-09-09

If you saw this on VH-1's '80s Band Reunion, it's time to get the real thing. This album is truly a classic of early '80's English pop music. It's refreshingly nostalgic to hear the pure energy and innocence of Haircut 100's mix of sounds. A time capsule? Yes, but in the best sense. Get this album and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful !!.......2004-04-16

This was the most wonderfull and refreshing album to come out of the mid 80's. The music was such a fantastic mix of different genres and was full of light and energy. I loved and still love every song on this album and like the others who reviewed it, could play it all day while lazing in the sun thinking what a fantastic day it really was. In fact while traveling in the 80's in my youth I went to the Caribbean because of this Album as the songs begged to be heard on the beautifull beaches of those Island paradises.

5 out of 5 stars Great music from the "What Were They Thinking?" files.......2004-01-09

In 1981, the Nick Heyward-led Haircut 100 put out "Pelican West." I bought it in album format and absolutely wore out the grooves on it. You'll hear this story from almost everyone who bought the album. It's probably *the* most listenable collection of songs I have ever owned. 22 years later, I can remember every track like an old friend.

You can see I'm not alone: the fact that this CD (from a relatively obscure band, let's face it) is still around and kicking - with bonus tracks no less - is a testament to just how popular this album became. If you've never heard of it and are curious, trust me: buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Of course, all good things must come to an end, but in this case, it was far too abrupt. Heyward must of gotten a little too full of himself...he shut down Haircut 100 not long after the release to focus on a solo career. That individual shot at stardom reached some modest success in the UK, but here in the States...Nick who? A shame he pulled the plug on Haircut 100 too soon.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Fun album, lousy reissue.......2006-01-23

I've grown accustomed to buying Japanese reissues of a lot of music these days. Most domestic and European companies don't care much for their catalogue and put out shoddy reissues that sound lifeless and limp (usually being sourced from vinyl or tapes that are several generations from the original masters). The Japanese music companies (BMG/JVC) have this much hyped K2 24-bit remastering process that is supposedly the best you can get when it comes to music. However, with this album, it is a massive and painful failure. The album, while "remastered" insofar as volume goes, has ALL of the faults of the previous reissues one can find on Amazon at a cheaper price. The CD is full of pops, clicks and (special to this edition) copius noise reduction software use. The pops and clicks were on the old CDs (the other imports on Amazon) and thus are identical. The original CD issues clearly came from a rough analogue tape and this CD issue is seemingly merely a reprocessing of the old CD that is much louder. Louder may sound beter at first but you lose any dynamic quality to the music and subsequently get your eardrums blown out. For the price and supposed superiority, this reissue fails completely. Don't waste your money. One day someone will get it right using original master tapes (I hope). Buy the old the Pelican West + or the American Beat reissue. The American Beat reissue lacks the bonus tracks because of rights issues but is a very good remaster.
