Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Already veterans of the rocking Pacific Northwest club scene when they became 16 magazine regulars in the mid-1960s, Paul Revere and the Raiders were one of America's powerhouse bands. With Stones-derived blasts such as "Just Like Me," "The Great Airplane Strike," and "Good Thing," frontman Mark Lindsay and confreres almost accidentally built a great body of work while just trying to score hits. The only clinker here is "Melody for an Unknown Girl," a cheesy ballad that Lindsay apparently sneaked in as a joke. Had to be, right? --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Paul Revere & The Raiders - 'Greatest Hits' (Sony).......2007-07-05

Great fifteen track retrospect of this late '60's bubble gum rock ensemble. Although, I've never felt that was a fair description for Paul Revere & The Raiders. Always thought they were much better than other 'bubble gum' rock acts, like 1910 Fruitgum Company, Lovin' Spoonful, etc. Tunes here that's sure to bring back a lot of memories are "Louie Louie" (a cut that Paul Revere SWEARS that he actually wrote), "Louie-Go Home", "Stepping Out", the unmatchable "Kicks", "Good Thing", "Ups And Downs", "Action" and "Him Or Me-What's It Gonna Be?". Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Revere & the Raiders - Greatest Hits.......2007-02-21

All the great hits I remember from Paul Revere & the Raiders. Really enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs from a genuinely GREAT American band.......2006-12-05

Some call Paul Revere & The Raiders pop, bubblegum and soforth, but I just consider them all FUN. I like their sound and that is pretty much the yardstick I use when determining things such as this. As a radio personality for nearly 17 years now, I also have seen first hand the honest fan base that Paul & Co. generate year after year, hit after hit. There are a large collection of bands from the 60's who may have sold millions of records, but today would be hard pressed to fill a tiny bar with fans...but I have seen it time after time how Paul Revere can and still DOES pack the joints that he plays year after year. Why could that possibly be?? If nothing else, Paul IS a performer. He KNOWS what the fans want, and he gives it to them. You can fault him for that line of thinking, but it has certainly served him well over the years.

His well-known feud with Mark Lindsay rages on, and I felt that originally when I went to see him the first time I would be missing out because the original lead singer wasn't there...but along the way a funny thing happened: I found that I didn't care. Paul puts on a great show plain and simple. Easily THE Funniest rock & roll performer I have ever seen, and in the radio biz I can assure you I have seen a rather large number of concerts over the years. But funny or not, it's the MUSIC which brought the crowds over the years, and with or without Mark Lindsay, Paul is worth seeing.

The music (I believe) speaks for itself. Once again, some view it as pop or bubblegum or what whatever, but just remember that even though it wasn't until 'Indian Reservation' (released as the 'Raiders') that they finally enjoyed the taste of a #1 hit song, they produced an impressive number of genuinely catchy songs. Opinions vary, of that much I am 100% certain...but I also know that when I played my all-request Friday show, Paul received almost as many requests as The Beatles and the Beach Boys. Like them or hate them, Paul Revere & The Raiders are a wonderful memory for me in the world of Oldies Rock & Roll, and Paul himself will always be rememberd by me as one of the best performers I have ever seen.

The notable omission of 'Indian Reservation' is puzzling to me...sure there are plenty of hits to keep you satisfied here, but not including their ONLY #1 hit??? Who was responsible for THAT monumental lapse in judgement? Otherwise, the selection is virtually perfect...my favorite is 'Him or me, what's it gonna be' -- I just love that one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars good rockin' tonight.......2006-06-13

Still the best hits package. This is truly the essential Raiders collection. The most underrated band of the 60's,this is vital garage band punk rock and roll. Listen to Mark Lindsay wail on "Just Like Me" or "Hungry".He could blow 90% of the lead singers of the day off the stage. This was the group that put the fun back in R&R!Get it while you still can!

5 out of 5 stars Good Thing.......2006-03-10

The best from Paul, Mark & the boys. Enjoyed the extra sound tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Nice collection!.......2007-05-21

As I mentioned in other reviews, I'm not into the greatest hits thing. I bought this cd because I love one of their songs (Cherokee People). I could not find the original album with that song anywhere else. This compilation is just OK.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Revere & the Raiders - Anthology CD.......2007-04-12

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-02-16

The product I ordered was really worth the money. I enjoy music, especially old classic rock. I have been looking in all the music shops for this particular CD. So,when I found it, I was so excited. I had to order it. It is just like the original album. I really enjoy listening to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-16

Apparently Paul Revere & the Raiders went through member changes before I became familiar with them as a young teen, watching them on TV, and some of the Raiders I knew were not the original members, but this CD has all the great Raiders songs that I remember and then some. If you like Paul Revere & the Raiders, you'll like this CD, and you get a lot of songs on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great! But often overlooked........2007-01-06

If you like great 60's rock and roll you'll be delighted with this collection. I was pleasently surprised to hear material I'd not heard before and it sounded as fresh today as their music sounded to me in the 60's. The weakest tune IMHO is the first one "Louie Louie". I suppose it had to be included but it gets much better from that point on and really jams! When you need a positive mood change just through this on and remember!

5 out of 5 stars Rollicking Rockin' Raiders!.......2007-07-19

WE WANT "WHERE THE ACTION IS" & "HAPPENING 67/68/69/& 70" ON DVD SO GET DCP & ABC TO RELEASE THESE! Anyway: Steppin' Out jams! A remake of I'll Be Doggone, a fun tune called Outta Site/then a remake: Baby Please Don't Go/An instro(remake) of Night Train. S.2 has Just Like Me(sans back up)Then a remake of Dylan's Catch the Wind. A terrific remake of Satisfaction! Then a redo of I'm Crying. Paul blares out the remake of New Orleans & then the short & sweet ACTION Theme song. Confidentially, I believe these redos are some of the BEST & it'll take you back to a simpler time which I wish would return! BTW: the CD has added trax: Ride Your Pony/Just Like Me(45) & B.F.D.R.F. Blues not what Amazon wrote! A B side 45.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Action Is.......2007-05-13

Although "Where the Action Is" episodes have not been released on DVD, Just Like Us captures the energy and enthusiasm of the band that made the TV show a hit for over two years. Sometimes known as the classic group of Raiders, Paul, Mark, Fang, Drake and Smitty all shared in the vocals and writing of the original tunes. They also do some fantastic covers like they would perform on the "Where the Action Is" TV shows. So, until the TV show is released in DVD, I highly recommend this album while you are awaiting by the DVD bins in the department stores.

Gear up that 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 and cruise past the cool garage in the Pacific Northwest where Paul Revere & the Raiders launched their cool career. This is an excellent collection of classics and cover versions of other classics and 60s hounds will undoubtedly love it.

The Raiders' heyday of 1965-1967 ran alongside that of other cool garage bands that made it big such as the Sonics with their runaway train, "Have Love Will Travel." Their Pacific Northwestern Peers, the Sonics and the Raiders will certainly have you wanting to jump into your very cool 1965 Dodge Coronet with your satellite set to the Cool Oldies. You will love Drake's incredible guitar style; the folk influence in songs such as "Catch the Wind" and the high powered rock that was a staple in 60s garage band music. You will probably start to dance when you hear "Just Like Me," a 1965 gem that is well loved to this day.

Yes, you do want this collection of timeless classics and you will certainly be glad you have it. Now get that Coronet ready with your cool dial set to songs like this! I just love this collection!

Every Song on this album is truly a good song to listen to!! This is one of the Raiders top albums!! Tom

Paul Revere and The Raiders...What can I say. These guys still rock. I saw Paul about 2 years ago in Shreveport and Mark Lindsay just this year (2002). Still rockin'. Just Like Us is the most energetic, fun classic party rock album I have ever heard. This is the best!

5 out of 5 stars Raiders Rock!.......2007-05-07

My wife has been a Raider Rooter since the Mid 60's so, since I'm a bit younger than her, I was amazed at the tunes/the harmonies & Mark's kicking vocals! I totally agree with her that the Raiders are 1 of the most underrated bands of all! When will THEY get into the R & R HOF? Revere is still entertaining in Reno & my wife still has all the LPS/45's & cassettes. It's a part of her childhood that will be with her forever! Her Cousin still has HIS "OH"* LPS & 45's as well. * The "OHS" was a nickname they gave PR&TRS when they were growing up. I wish we could ALL go back in time. This compilation covers early to recent featuring ML. Mostly Columbia Classics altho a few tunes were cut at the end or newer versions were expanded. It's a keeper, tho. And so is my wife!

2 out of 5 stars If you love the Raiders "do the right thing-buy Sundazed".......2006-01-27

I originally purchased the set upon it's original release in 1990, over the years I have listened to it may times, continuing to comparing it to many other remastered tracks and cds of its time...always concluding that the tracks (especially disc 1, disc 2 kicks in with "him or me") sounded like they came directly from vinyl,I have today just received the Sundazed Midnight Ride. Let me tell you if you love this stuff as I do, and want to hear the Raiders, pass on this collection, and get the Sundazed, the sound blows "Legend" out the door! I can't wait to get the rest on Sun.

5 out of 5 stars "BULLDOG": Columbus, OH.......2005-09-13

THE LEGEND OF PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS is the only Paul Revere & The Raiders "Greatest Hits" compilation that I've found (and I've been looking for one for quite a while) to include ALL of their charted hits and ALL the others that just bubbled under the top 100. Their "covers" of older hits really rock and their originals sound wonderful. The overall quality of the disc is excellent! The booklet that accompanies the double-disc set is packed with info and pictures. I grew up listening to these guys and their sound is fresher than ever. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this offering. The price is very fair for all that you get!

4 out of 5 stars kicks just keep getting harder to find.......2005-08-27

I was actually looking to buy Paul Revere and the Raiders Greatest Hits, when Amazon prompted me to take a look at this 2 cd set. Since it contained over twice the number of songs for just a little bit more cash, I thought I'd get this instead. What a treat! This is more of an historical collection, reminding me of the Beatles Anthology albums, in that it contains material never released, or hard to find as well as their hits. All I was after was their version of Louie, Louie, and Kicks, but there are a couple of wonderful numbers from very early in their career that have incredible energy, hard to keep your seat when listening. Shake It Up, and At the Blue Fox, for example, sound like you found a great party at the local hangout with the world's greatest garage band just bopping away. Also included are the themes they did for those old Dick Clark shows, Where the Action Is, and the like. Not all the cuts are the best music ever, the later stuff is a bit schmaltzy, but by and large this collection blew me away.

2 out of 5 stars Lousey Sound and to Much Filler.......2005-08-16

Don't Hate the Reviewer, Hate the CD Set:

Don't get me wrong, I love the Raiders but I will make this short and to the point. First, the sound recording is just plain BAD!!
Secondly, the songs below vary from poor to just bad..Shoulda been allow a death on tape in a vault somewhere.

There are several really good remastered Raider's Greatest Hits compilations. I would avid this one if I were you.

The height of Raidermania! Him or ME boogies on! Then a sexy riff called Reno. Then Upon Your Leaving followed by Mo'Reen(anti drug). Mark's Wanting You "rap" then Gone Movin' On. Side 2 starts with I Had A Dream!
Then Tighter & Make it With Me. Paul's a hoot with Ain't Nobody Who Can Do It Like Leslie Can(PR's 1st wife)& finally: the erie I Hear A Voice.
CD Extra: the 45 version of Ups & Downs/the Legend of Paul Revere & a tune called Try Some Of Mine. GROOVY!!! FAR OUT!!! COOL!!!

5 out of 5 stars must own record.......2007-05-25

Revolution is what I consider to be a highly enjoyable collection of short little pop songs. While the creative juices were running high for the band on this album, it's the way the melodies roll off so enjoyably that makes the music on this record so great. The album kicks off with an almost Beach Boys-like "Him or Me- What's It Gonna Be?" It's of course, very melodic, just like the rest of side one.

Am I crazy, or does the song "Make It With Me" feature a guitar riff very similar to the Black Sabbath song "Tomorrow's Dream?" Okay, I understand Paul Revere fans and Sabbath fans are quite different and probaby wouldn't know if there's any truth to Sabbath possibly ripping off that riff for their 1972 album Volume 4. I LOVE the way this album closes with a song called "I Hear a Voice" (sorry, I don't have this album on CD with the bonus tracks, I have the original record). The song has such a heavenly calm feeling to it. GREAT way to end a very good album.

Anyway, for a collection of short songs (and a short album overall) you really have to hear how GOOD this baby is.

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Love These Guys.......2004-04-08

Just another great album by these hard rocking, unapologetic lads in colonial uniforms. No social statements, just one good tune after another. This was a party band, too unhip for the San Francisco or New York scene, the pride of Caldwell Idaho! Lots of potential hits here..MoReen,I Had a Dream,Tighter,Him or Me Whats it Gonna Be, Gone Movin On....no introspective soul searching or whining.Pass the bottle!May they rock for another 50 years!

4 out of 5 stars Mark,Terry & sessionmen.......2004-02-23

Although this fine album contains one authentic "Paul Revere & The Raiders" cut("Ain't Nobody Who Can Do It Like Leslie Can",a 1966 B-side featuring a rare lead vocal from Revere),the rest of the album is performed by Mark Lindsay & producer/co-writer Terry Melcher(Melcher even does much of the lead vocal on the song "Tighter").The instruments are by Terry Melcher & Van Dyke Parks(keyboards),Jerry Kole,Ry Cooder & ex-Raider Drake Levin(guitars),Hal Blaine & Jim Gordon(drums),and an unidentified bassist. The techniques used during recording(live during mixdown overdubs) means that half of the songs can be presented only in mono, though the stereo remix of "Him or Me-What's it Gonna Be?" that debuted on the "Essential Ride" CD is included,as are several good bonus tracks, including an extended/unedited version of "The Legend of Paul Revere".Too bad that Sundazed couldn't give us liner notes with complete details about who played what.Paul Revere's involvement in the studio obviously ended in late 1966.Mark Lindsay would, from this point onwards, make the records with whomever he wished, whether that meant sessionmen or a combination of sessionmen and some Raiders(but not Revere himself)

3 out of 5 stars BIG CHANGES.......2003-05-14

REVOLUTION was an apt title for this Raiders LP, the first after the big shake-up of band members. Three out, three in. We won't go into the politics of what happened here, because what we're concerned with is the music. Mark was becoming the main focal point of the Raiders, and they were starting to stray from their gritty, hard sound. Not to say that this is a bad album: it is simply different. You can't deny that "Him Or Me", "Gone Movin' On", "I Had A Dream" and "Mo'reen" are cookin' tunes, and this is the album in which Paul finally gets a lead vocal on "Ain't Nobody Who Can Do It Like Leslie Can", so grab this sucker! Bob Irwin does his usual fine work on the remastering, and throws in three bonus trax: "Ups and Downs" (the single), "Try Some Of Mine" (which, once you hear it, you can understand why it was left off the LP: too gritty for these ever-more clean-cut Raiders, but it kicks butt anyway!), and the unedited version of "The Legend of Paul Revere". Thanks to Bob Irwin and everyone at Sundazed for another worthy reissue.

Baby Boomers--this will take you back to a simpler time. One of their best albums!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Raiders album, by far.......2006-03-16

This is the album I wanted "Headquarters" to be. With all of the retroactive respect generously ladled on various "lesser" 1960s groups nowadays--The Association, the aforementioned Monkees, anything related to Curt Boettcher--it's somewhat surprising that the Raiders haven't experienced a similar hip renaissance. Part of this is likely due to Mark Lindsay's teen idol persona, or the fact that the Raiders' career trajectory goes from deeply respectable (they started out as a fierce little pre-Beatles Northwest rock band) to very, very mainstream.

If the Raiders ever do get their due, though, this album will be at the epicenter. To be sure, the Raiders had released plenty of quality output--and not just on singles--before Spirit of '67. But never before and never after would the band hit a consistently high standard of quality.

Yes, to a certain degree the album is prefab (studio musicians make up the bulk of the instrumentalists, and producer Terry Melcher compositionally assists a few tracks), but it hardly matters; the songs are excellent, the playing convincing, and the attitude still intact. The two big hits ("Hungry" and "Good Thing") are excellent, but everything else is pretty spot-on as well, from the Stonesy "The Great Airplane Strike" to the best-Eleanor-Rigby-alike-tune-EVER "Undecided Man." Not nearly enough praises have been sung about "All About Her," where Lindsay gives one of his best performances. And while Mark dominates the proceedings, the other members get their vocal turns as well, and "Why? Why? Why?" is Fang's best showcase with the group.

Again, this is the album I wanted "Headquarters" to be. It's inconsequential, doesn't make a statement, and is a bit silly (the "Indian drone" on Arabian Nights). This matters not one bit, as "Spirit of '67," short as it may be, is one of the most enjoyable albums of the mid sixties. If you're going to buy one Raiders album, make this it.

4 out of 5 stars Spirit of 67 Flys High !!!!.......2006-02-24

I remember when I was Eight years old back in 1967 when my Sister bought this album and became a fan ever since !!!
I was so thrilled when this was released on Cd and was again excited when it had Bonus Tracks included on it I love the Alternate version of Hungry especially the explicit lyrics they couldn't get away with back then!!! My Favorite Bonus Track is Your a Bad Girl why this was left off the original album I don't know why !!! Also making his debut on the album is Guitarist Jim "Harpo" Valley who replaced Drake Levin this would be Jim's only Album with the Raiders but what an Remarkable Album to be on !!!

5 out of 5 stars Clipped Audio Fixed!.......2005-06-25

Earlier reviews of this CD made reference to a problem involving distortion caused by clipping. Well, I'm very pleased to report that Sundazed HAS corrected this problem on all three of the PR&TR CDs they released in 1996. You might still want to be careful, however, when purchasing this CD. Bad copies may still be floating around the marketplace. To distinguish good copies from bad without even removing the cellophane wrapper, look carefully at what name is written directly above (or, in the case of "Something Happening", below) the CBS "eye" logo on the front cover. If it says "Columbia" there, you have a good copy. If it says "Sundazed" there instead, you have an older copy that may be bad.

As for the artistic content of this CD, I think this is The Raiders' finest album. Even "Collage" doesn't pass the repeated-listening test as well as this one. The late Terry Melcher was at the top of his game when he produced this gem. Thank you, Sundazed, for repairing the audio deficiencies in this release.

5 out of 5 stars Not masterpieces, but good music.......2007-05-14

This CD is a bit tough to review, since most of the CD consists of world premieres of two works, Christopher Theofanidis' "The Here and Now" and David Del Tredici's "Paul Revere's Ride."

The only reference point here to other recordings is the middle section, the "Lamentations" from Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony. Nancy Maultsby performs without the over-the-top histrionics that mar some performances, and the ASO performs admirably.

Of the two premieres, "Paul Revere's Ride" is probably the less impressive of the two works from a musical perspective; the work is rather "gimmicky," relying on police sirens and recorded birdsong, among other things. Nevertheless, Hila Plitmann, for whom Del Tredici wrote the work, does a rather impressive job conveying the thrills Longfellow hoped his words would inspire.

My personal favorite of the three works is the opening piece, "The Here and Now," which is a setting of poems by Rumi. Perhaps the most impressive work, from a musical standpoint, is Szymanowski's Third Symphony, Szymanowski's "Song of the Night" (a work definitely worth exploring if you're a fan of Rumi), and it's no shame to say that Theofanidis doesn't quite reach the lofty pinnacle set by that work. But his work is nevertheless an artful assembly of Coleman Barks' translation. More so than "Paul Revere's Ride," this piece contains beautiful melodies that will stay with you long after the work ends: I frequently find myself singing the climactic duet, "The urgency of love." (Structurally, and somewhat musically, this piece is similar to Samuel Barber's setting of Pablo Neruda's poems in The Lovers; fans of one will probably like the other, as well.)

If you're not a fan of "new music," you may not like this disc. But if you're a fan of the ASO and its work, it's definitely worth a listen.

There are thousands of classic rock cds that Amazon will not let you buy unless you go to one of their foreign sites and pay much more. For example, this Garage Rock Classics cd. I have a copy I would like to sell for less than those listed, but Amazon won't let me. Why? Because some mega-seller has gone to the English or other foreign site and listed this American-made cd and American-issued cd there. As soon as this happens it is removed from the Amazon catalog. To you, that means you pay more due to Amazon's anti-American policies. To me it means I bought I cd thinking I could sell it on Amazon and now I'm stuck. Unless you think the French and other should have more rights to our native cd's than we do, please consider letting Amazon know what you think of this costly policy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb disc of '60s garage rock.......2004-06-28

When Lenny Kaye put together the legendary double-LP "Nuggets" in the early '70s, he kicked off an anthologizing craze that's still going strong. Varese's producers navigate a rockin' line between the more well-known names of '60s garage rock and the sort of obscurities found on anthology series' like "Pebbles" and "Beyond the Grave." It's a winning mix, combining killer classics like Paul Revere & The Raiders "Just Like Me" and The Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie" with lesser-known gems like The Moving Sidewalks' "99th Floor" (featuring a young Billy Gibbons, later of ZZ Top) and The Litter's "Action Woman."

Followers of garage rock will know most these tracks, but given the regional fame of many singles, and the uneven quality of their anthological reissue over the years, there will be some nice surprises for even die-hard collectors. More importantly, those familiar only with the national hits will treasure this introduction to a broader sampling of mid-60s garage rock riches. This is a superb disc for charting a course to additional purchases (e.g., original album reissues and multi-disc box sets like "Nuggets" and "Nuggets II"), with 25 well-selected original tracks and liner notes from garage rock authority (and "Ugly Things" fanzine editor) Mike Stax.

Cuts 1-3, 9-12, 17-18, and 24 are true stereo, while the rest are AM-radio-ready mono. Tracks 26-28 were recorded live at the Cavestomp garage rock celebrations in 1999 and 2000, and show aging garage rockers - especially The Standells - to hang on to their mojo with impressive force.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Raiders album.......2004-03-30

I was very glad to see this album get a CD release, as it is my favorite of all the Raiders albums. The early records of Paul Revere & the Raiders were basic boogie woogie, rhythm and blues, danceable rock and roll. They progressed into a more commercial, guitar and organ based pop rock sound with their mid-60's albums "Midnight Ride" and "Spirit of '67". "Something Happening" finds Mark Lindsay leading the band into the psycadelic sounds of the late 60's, but with enough of a pop feel to remain accessible to their younger fans. This album is really Mark's vision - he produced it, wrote all the songs, and of course is the lead singer on every song. Mark is a master of the studio, utilizing all the then current technology to bring his vision to life. Listen to this CD with headphones! There is so much detail that can be missed just playing it through your stereo system's speakers. "Happening Intro/Too Much Talk" is a masterpiece! This ranks right up there with the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" in my book, and the lyrics are as relevant today as they were back in 1968. "Happens Every Day" is a happy go lucky song that could be considered the Raiders' "Penny Lane". "Burn Like a Candle" is a fuzz-tone laden caution against drug abuse. Drummer Joe Correro Jr. duels it out at the end with several guitar tracks. The intro to "Obeservation from Flight 385" sounds similar to the orchestral climax in the Beatles "Day in the Life", but the song itself is a haunting view of planet Earth from eight miles high. "Get Out of My Mind" is the famous Ferrari track, and by the end of the song the eerie sound of the strings feel's like Mark has lost his mind! "Don't Take it So Hard" features one of the most difficult bass lines I have ever heard - it's actually the hook of the song. Joe Jr. blows us away with another killer drum break. "Communication (Part 1 & 2)" has a Motown style bass line, and another great guitar duel in part 2. This is a killer song that should have been released as a single (part 1 on the A side, part 2 on the B side). "Love Makes the World Go Round" balances 60's idealism with daily realities - riots, starving children, war, political inaction ("too much talk and not enough action"!). "Free" sounds to me like a utopian vision of peace and love ("you and me can be free, love is the way"), and once again Mark uses some very creative stereo panning. "The Good Times" is by far the most syrupy track on the album, but it's a nice vision of Mark and his future wife growing old together. "Happening '68" will sound familiar to many fans as the theme to the tv show of the same name. We get the full length album version here, as well as the previously released television version. There's also the theme to "Happening '68"'s summer spinoff show "It's Happening", and the mono single version of "Too Much Talk". With Mark as producer/songwriter/singer, Paul on organ, Joe on drums, Freddy Weller on guitar, Charlie Coe on bass, and Tommy Smothers on the liner notes, this group really makes it! Also thanks to Sundazed for caring enough to bring back the Raiders albums!

    3 out of 5 stars HOLDING PATTERN.......2003-05-14

The Raiders, now prominently featuring Mark as exclusive lead singer and songwriter, put SOMETHING HAPPENING out in 1968. They had started a new TV series called "It's Happening", which didn't last long, and were moving away from their rock and roll beginnings toward a more pop sound. This album does have its moments, such as "Too Much Talk", "Get Out Of My Mind" (except for the sounds of the Ferrari racing round your speakers for WAY, WAY too long) and "Don't Take It So Hard", but much of the album is filler. They had ditched by now the revolutionary war outfits for a more hip look, and were trying to make their way in an ever more serious, ever more psychedelic musical scene. Like the Rolling Stones with their album "Their Satanic Majesties Request", this LP is a misstep, an attempt to integrate the band into a musical form in which they appeared unsure and uncomfortable. I'm a fan, but I have to tell the truth: this one is for fans only. Bob Irwin, as usual, has given us three bonus trax: the original single version (which differs radically from the LP version) of "Too Much Talk", the unissued TV version of "Happening '68", and the single version of the theme of "It's Happening". Bob's remastering work is always outstanding, so a very big thank you to him and all the nice folks at Sundazed, one of the best reissue labels around.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE OF THE 60s........2002-12-15

Along with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's and the Beach Boys' Pet Sound, the Raiders' Something Happening can be easily considered as one the masterpieces of the 60s. Wisely produced, composed and sung by leader Mark Linsay, the album shows an umparalled quality of songs hardly achieved in previous Raiders albums. Mark was by far the more talented Raider, and every song here is beautifully and carefully produced to give its best, from Too Much Talk, Happens Every Day, to the gems Burn Like a Candle, Observation From Flight 285, the hit Don't Take It So Hard or The Good Times, along with Yesterday one of the best 60s ballads.By 1968 it was clear the Raiders was not a garage band anymore. But this is by no means bad, it is great. From an experienced rock musician, take this advice: if you still do not have it, you do not know what you have been missing all these years.

1 out of 5 stars Nice try but falls very short of a quality album.......2000-01-01

This album is an attempt by Mark Lindsay to be taken seriously in the rock world, and he fails. He still has one foot in the world of bubblegum, and the other foot in the land of cliches and hippie axioms. This album did not age well, and sounds hopelessly out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Breaking the mold.......1999-12-08

I was shocked when I read a negative review of this album where the reviewer said there weren't any hit singles from it. Well, the same goes for Sgt. Pepper, and like that, "Something Happening" is a fantastic album. This is where the Raiders made the transition from bubblegum pop to hard rock, and they deftly straddle both sides of that fence. Here, there's sappy stuff like "Happens Every Day" and "Observation from Flight 285" side by side with hard rockers like "Get out of my Mind" and "Communication." In between, we've got perfect pop gems like "Too Much Talk," "Burn Like a Candle" and the TV show themes. As much as I love the stuff with Fang, Drake & Smitty, this album is leaps and bounds ahead of "Spirit of '67."
