3 out of 5 stars Sting - MERCURY FALLING (1996).......2006-07-26

Sting followed up the superb TEN SUMMONER'S TALES with MERCURY FALLING, on which the former Police frontman experiments with blues, country, folk, and a little bit of gospel. The album's biggest problem is a lack of energy. Part of the charm of Sting's earlier releases was the power of his songs and the passion in his vocals. Most of the songs on MERCURY FALLING are devoid of much energy, resulting in an unexciting, often pretentious album. It does have its highlights, namely the bluesy "All Four Seasons" and the uptempo "Twenty Five To Midnight", the latter of which was inexplicably omitted from the US and Canadian releases of the album; also, the emotional "You Still Touch Me" and the gospel-influenced "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot". It's far from a bad album, but in the end it feels like Sting doesn't have his heart in it, resulting in an enjoyable, but unextraodinary recording.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2005-12-28

I grew up listening to, and loving, sting's music. When this cd came out I was a kid, But my dad always had it. I recently found it and it's been in my cd player non-stop since. Its a gorgeously crafted CD, one of my favorites. The only reason I don't give it 5/5 stars is because Lithium sunset is not a very strong song for this CD. Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Calming.......2005-10-09

Being 20, I listen to all sorts and types of music, from emo, punk and ska to R&B, from rock and alternative to heavy metal, from classic rock to britney spears pop, from metallica to the beatles,

and of all of these this has got to be the most calming CD i've personally ever loved.

Unfortunately I lost it a while ago to an unfortunate accident -_- but will be getting it back shortly. ^-^

I definitely recommend giving it a try, even if it's not your thing. It's very calming, and it grows on you when you don't expect it to. I used to actually fall asleep to it at night.

I'm sure my review can be considered an understatement. :)

4 out of 5 stars Mercury Falling.......2005-09-02

Mercury Falling~ Sting is a very slick and well done production that sounds a bit like pop music for the "Hugo Boss" wearing and gin and tonic drinking crowd since it sounds so controlled and dubonair. I think that he is a vert tallented muisician and vocalist that sometimes plays it a bit to safe and does not experiment as much as he did in his earlier days. It is like he has become as predictable as a product from Colgate Palmolive and he does not want to scare his "loyal" customer so he plays the same kind of music from album to album with slight changes. The book-let is very nice and the font is easy on the eye and the photographs for the cover and inside the book-let are astounding. Even so it is a well produced (if predictable) album that I give four out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Mercury Falling,Respect Rising .......2005-08-30

If you hear "I was brought to my senses" you will notice Sting sings like a violin. There is no voice on earth that can meet the disarrayed vocals that sting displays on the track. Mercury falling is an album I have been listening to for a few months now. I don't know why I never bothered to hear it before. Like a friend on amazon said, this album does have Sting in a mellower mood than usual. He goes as far as making "Im so happy I can't stop crying" I can use words but cannot explain just how dreadfully addictive it is.Sting makes fun of his predicament. Just how many men/artists can do this as well as the master himself?

The first time I heard I HUNG MY HEAD,it was the johnny cash version. I like the Cash version more but that doesnt take anything away from the original. I find it a difficult exercise to get bored of this album. It seems newer than the last time everytime I hear it. Track 1, Hounds of Winter has an everlasting melody that hits off the album.

Some other songs on this album that I love with all my heart,
You Still Touch Me(Beautifully set),Let Your Soul (Amazing Amazing Amazing), Lithium Sunset (not great but it's like the credits rolling on this album to end) , All four Seasons, etc.

I think I have named all the tracks of this album. My favourite Sting album is Brand New Day because that is what started the addiction for me with monumental songs (Ghost Story,A Thousand Years,Desert Rose,Big Lies small world) Mercury Falling is more intriguing, complex, bigger and all in all more respect earning.

I saw Sting perform in my city earlier this year and he didnt perform one song from this album. Great concert though.
Buy Mercury Falling if you appreciate albums that complete themselves. You can listen to one track from this album repeatedly and not get bored. You can start from anywhere, there's no pattern as such.

With Much Respect,

A wonderful CD, with themes of cycles, seasons, winter, loss, and renewal. First and final tracks begin and end respectively with the name of the album, with a variety of musical styles used throughout; note the unusual time signature used in 'I hung my Head'. Every track a field of gold. Well worth the investment.
