Product Description
Singer/songwriter Essra Mohawk (b. Sandra Elayne Hurvitz, Philadelphia, PA) is one of those unfortunate artists whose work is celebrated by critics & a small group of ardent admirers, but never by the public at large. Mohawk's first single was 'The Boy With the Way' with B-side 'Memory of Your Voice' on Liberty Records in 1964. She declined several offers of staff writerships, although the Shangri-Las & Vanilla Fudge began recording her material. In 1967, Mohawk met Frank Zappa, eventually joining the Mothers of Invention, where she reluctantly assumed the moniker Uncle Meat. Frank Zappa signed her to his Bizarre label (a Verve subsidiary) for her first album, this is a Japanese reissue of her 3rd album from 1975 on Air Mail Recordings packaged in a mini-LP sleeve. 2003.

3 out of 5 stars A Difficult Listen.......2005-11-14

I came to this reissue with no knowledge of Essra Mohawk, except that she has become something of a forgotten treasure, loved by fans and critics alike. I also read somewhere that her style was somewhat similar to that of Joni Mitchell and, being a huge Joni fan, i felt compelled to check this out.

So is it as great as people say? Well, not quite, though I can understand the acclaim. It's a difficult listen as there are some unconventional song structures and not many melodies or chord changes that hook you immediately. Also, I didn't particularly like her voice, though it is a versatile and powerful instrument.

"Primordial Lovers" is by far the best album of the two on this reissue and it contains the only truly indispensible (in my opinion) song here, "I Am The Breeze." It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and captivating songs I've ever heard, a true masterpiece. Unfortunately a lot of the rest of the material wasn't as compelling for me, though I did enjoy "Lion On The Wing", "Thunder In The Morning" and "Looking Forward To The Dawn."

I couldn't really get into the self-titled album or the two bonus tracks added to the end of Primordial Lovers. It'd actually be nice if there was just a straight reissue of Primordial Lovers - this is really just a bit too much Essra Mohawk unless you have more than a passing interest.

Overall, a good release, though probably not for everyone. It just might be worth it for "I Am The Breeze" though....

4 out of 5 stars Stirs your soul and conscience.......2002-06-18

I do not own this cd, but heard the song It's History on launchast, and it is a very poignant and stirring song about the ravaging consequences of mankind's greed (anybody read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss?). This song will make you stop and think (you should be already) about what us nasty humans do to the earth and fellow mankind. Essra also sang some School House Rock songs (thought the name was familiar!).

3 out of 5 stars A good album, but where is are her CLASSICS?.......2000-07-12

Don't get me wrong. This is a nice album to have on disc, but it's very commercial and Essra's voice ain't as good as it once was. She put out two great records in the early seventies; the first being Primordial Lovers and the second being the selftitled Essra Mohawk. I believe they were both put out through the Warner Brothers family of labels. Where are they? Both get five stars a piece.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......1999-09-03

Essra has been around a long time and never got the credit due her. I hope Raindance and her new CD, Essie Mae Hawk meets the Killer Groove Band, gets her the attention that she deserves!

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant...moving.......1999-08-19

My admiration goes to Essra Mohawk for doing something different each time she makes a record (which isn't often enough). Although I think Primordial Lovers and its follow-up will remain my favourite albums, this one is very good too.

While her earliest material was experimental, rambling and almost free-form, on Raindance, she has composed shorter pop/rock songs, and very well, too. "Somebody Just Like You", "Long Bad Dream", and "Wrap it all Around" are some of her best songs ever. Her voice is very expressive, and Raindance is a very emotional performance from beginning to end. I would particularly have loved to hear some of these songs arranged with just Essra and her piano-playing, but the arrangements on this CD are good all the same.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the most important CD of the 90's.......1999-08-17

One thing, I remember Essra when I was a teen in Visiting NYC/Greenwich Village. The Secret Diva had remained Secret too long. Pretty much as the world tried to forget Nansi Nevin (Sweet Water). Rain Dance is probably one of the Best produced and diverified CD's much needed in our time when everyone is doing candy rock hits. And the same concepts. I guess some folks can't handle alternating styles, but that is what true artistry is all about. The adventure contues thanks to Essra.

    5 out of 5 stars Essra is a star.......2006-04-23

Though I like Maria Muldaur, Essra has far more personality than Maria. She's funky. She grooves. She's colorful. She's a class of her own. I wouldn't have felt the need to write what's obvious if I hadn't read that unbelievable review below. Some people are so mean, it's incredible. If you read this, believe me: Essra Mohawk is not an overrated singer, nor the kind of obscure singers some critics love to cherish just because she's not popular. She's that great. And if you're still surprised that great artists can still be not known enough in this world, then I'd say you still don't know this world enough.

    1 out of 5 stars No, I'm not alone........2004-07-14

The general public also ignores Essra Mohawk, who just refuses to go away. She's like the roaches in my apartment. I spray all the Raid I have but they still come back. 30 years ago she was a Laura Nyro imitator. In the 1970's she ripped off everyone from Leon Russell to Etta James to Donna Summer (that awful howling/shrieking quasi disco album she did with the coked out flower photograph on the cover). In the mousse haired 80's it was the synthetic new wave and Cyndi Lauper sound. The 90's she tried to ride the country linedancing haycart, and now it's blues. Damn, doesn't this woman have a style of her own? Given, her voice isn't bad but it has deteriorated badly after so many years and it not near the several octave soprano of yore. If you like this style of music you're much better off buying the latest releases by Tracy Nelson and Maria Muldaur. At least those women have their hearts in the blues and not just their wallets.

    4 out of 5 stars A fascinating new direction.......2003-10-29

This is definitely a grower. For those of us who love the sound of Essra alone at the piano, some readusting is required, since this is a bluesy-rock, guitar-driven affair, and less in keeping with the earlier albums. But perseverence pays off - not only does this album contain Essra's best vocals in years, it also features very spirited, dymanic and inspired songs. Any Bonnie Raitt or Maria Muldaur fan would enjoy this, with the added bonus that the artist actually wrote the songs. And it's the best Essra album cover since the 70s.

5 out of 5 stars Essra Mohawk = Eternal Talent! (Her Best Work In Years).......2003-10-16

While every Essra Mohawk album has more than a few gems, to these ears "You're Not Alone" is the singer-songwriter's most sparkling stone in years. Here, everything comes together: organic/rootsy instrumentation (incredibly produced by Jon Tiven), tight/well-written songs with wonderfully-inspiring lyrics, and some of the most powerfully soulful and sensitive vocals of Ms. Mohawk's storied career.

"People take for granted what they have close by," Essra sings in the title track. Well, the world has the maginificent Mohawk as close by as the CD player, and don't take her for granted. Just thank God for the gift.
