Product Description
After gaining modest (if unanimous) acclaim for 2004's Ta Det Lungt, Swedish band Dungen's growing demand has led Subliminal Sounds to reissue their vinyl-only, limited-edition first record, a three-track disc of material recorded between 1999 and 2001, before the band's appeal breached Sweden's narrow borders. Whereas Ta Det Lungt revealed mastermind Gustav Ejstes as a pop songwriter of the first order, here he's a mad DJ let loose in the world's greatest classic radio station, spinning the dial each time his buzz wears off, landing each time on something new and weird and utterly wonderful. Subliminal. 2005.

Tio Bitar leads off with a wordless guitar scream and a blaze of rhythm section, knocking a hole in the wall of sound just as quickly to let in an otherworldly flute melody that's pure Ian Anderson. As modern rockers go, Dungen makes no bones about reaching back into the past to embrace both Black Sabbath's beefy parallel riffing and Jethro Tull's flights of jazzy digression. This is the second U.S. release for the Swedish band, following 2005's Ta Det Lugnt and as their name implies, Dungen are heavy, metallic, and occasionally impenetrable. Though "psychedelic" is the main reference point that comes to mind, and songs like "C Visar Vägen" and "Familj" display as much structural schizophrenia and loopy, lovely melodicism as a Donovan record hopped up on amphetamines, don't mistake Dungen for an exercise in rose-colored nostalgia--there's more than a twinge of new millennium nervousness in this dense and quite compelling record. --Ben Heege

3 out of 5 stars over-rated.......2007-07-11

Ok, tio bitar, 10 pieces...so what. This is another piece of over-rated swedish rock. The swedish rock scene has allways had some excellent local artists but has usually exported crap ones. This is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars not retro!.......2007-06-20

A window into our own times. This is not retro...it is just pure canniballizm...Like Tropicalia was...I have seen these guys twice live...and they are even better then the records are. When they hit your town to tour this beast, it is a must if you want to see one of the last real rock bands on the planet.

5 out of 5 stars That decade you love is back in style........2007-05-23

I have no idea what Dungen is saying, but somehow it doesn't matter; melody and coutermelody interweave themselves through this psychedelic recording like few have done in recent memory. It's overwhelming at first... like hearing anything reinvented on a grand scale... shimmering harmonies laden with hooks and allusions, all seamlessly integrated... so much energy and hard rocking moments... it's a stratospheric journey through the annals of rock, one that leaves you haunted and reaching for the play button a second time.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not Bitar.......2007-05-15

Personally, I never would have bet for Dungen to break out, outside of Sweden. Their dense psychedelic rock is not poppy even at their poppiest, and the whole thing is sung in Swedish.

But in fact, it did, with 2004's "Ta Det Lugnt," despite the music odds being stacked against it. And for the follow up, "Tio Bitar," Gustav Ejstes mostly sticks to the layered psych-folky hard-rock that has worked before, but gives it a slightly grimier edge.

It opens with a buzzing, screaming riff torn from a hard-rocker's heart, twisting around on itself like a coiled spring. But Ejstes throws in some twists -- around the halfway point, it cycles around a delicate flute melody and some rapid-fire drumming. And that's just the introduction!

He follows it up with the very different "Familj," a pleasant blend of ambient retro keyboard, dancy strings and solid drumming (mostly cymbals). You can't really put your finger on what it sounds like, and you can't really label it. Well, good.

The songs that follow are just as unexpected: intensely psychedelic hard-rockers like "Gör Det Nu," rippling pastoral ballads, fast-moving bass-rockers, gentle acoustic pop songs with spiraling riffs. And in the last three songs, Estjes makes his music even more complex -- the finale "En Gang I År Kom Det En Tår" is a masterpiece of fuzzy piano-folk and ambient synth.

"Tio Bitar" is a bit folkier and a bit rockier than Dungen's previous albums, and at times it seems to be split between those sounds -- first we get a psychedelic hard rocker, then a mellotron-folk song. But the heart of "Ta Det Lugnt" still seems to be there -- complex, strange and often meandering.

And Estjes packs this with even more instruments in his rapid, soaring music -- obviously there's the grimy bass and rampaging electric riffs, solid percussion and keyboards. But he packs in flashes of colourful mellotron, delicate flute, violins, and what sounds like klezmer, woven together into a shimmering psychedelic tapestry.

And I have no idea what Estjes is saying (except that the title means "Ten Pieces"), because I don't speak a word of Swedish. But he has a pleasant, mellow voice, sort of like a rockier Colin Meloy, and he can raise his voice to stand out in any kind of music.

"Tio Bitar" is a little bit folk-country, and a little bit rock'n'roll. But it retains the intense prog-psych-rock that Dungen is known for, and only makes it more entrancing.

4 out of 5 stars Q: How do you transport back to the late 60s? A: Play this album.......2006-09-11

I will admit upfront that I had heard about the Swedish band Dungen, but not actually heard their music, until I saw them perform at Bonnaroo this past June, and boy, what a great set they put on! It was one of the highlights of the festival for me, and not long thereafter I bought this album.

"Ta Det Lugnt" (13 tracks, 53 min.) is a blast into the past, as if today was the late 60s, a collection of psychedelic songs and it sounds great from start to finish. Since the songs are all in Swedish, I have no idea what they are about, but it doesn't matter. The album is a mood piece, pure and simple. I think that Dungen is the only band besides Sigur Ros that has made a dent in the rock music landscape in the US while not singing in English. This album was originally issued in 2004, but this particular 2005 reissue comes with bonus CD (5 tracks, 14 min.) that brings more of the same, just great.

Dungen is not the only band that 'specializes' in bringing the sounds of the late 60s into today's context. Another great example is White Magic, whose 2004 release "Through the Sun Door" is another stellar example of that. Check that out. And of course "Ta Det Lugnt" is equally highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Psych out.......2006-02-27

Dungen's third album "Ta Det Lungt" is not the sort of music that will get a lot of radioplay. Thank God. Instead, it's the sort of music that will deservingly acquire a cult following -- a sparkling, mad, wild musical psychedelic pop trip. This is probably the best Swedish import since Ingrid Bergman.

And there isn't any better way to open than with "Panda," a sparkling rock song that is both infectiously catchy and wonderfully rockin'. That fuzzy, cycling guitar works very well with the colorful Hammond melodies; it takes that great rock vibe and makes it fun as well.

Unless you are (or speak) Swedish, you probably won't understand a word Gustav Estjes sings. But somehow that's okay. He and his band forge through more wild tunes, like the echoing "Gjort bort sig," some mellow folk-rock, sprawling experimental songs (which brought a morning meadow to mind), and the sizzling riffs of the title track.

Not that everything is straightforward rock'n'roll; at the halfway point, things get a bit weird. "Det du tänker idag är du i morgon" is a smooth, shimmering little pop song full of flute, drums and Hammond, and is probably one of the prettiest songs released in the past year. It's followed by a few ominous experimental songs and an epic folk ballad, before finally finishing with a blast of pure, wild psychrock.

This version also has a five-song EP attached to it, and which serves as a nice accompaniment to the album itself -- burbly experimental, sizzling rockers, and a sparkly little Sigur-Ros-like ballad. It's a nice addition, although not quite as moving as the main album.

Dungen was one of the unexpected underground hits of the year -- before "Ta Det Lungt," they weren't really known outside of Sweden. Thankfully, that has changed, because their third album puts them up in the ranking of appealing, enchanting music that happens to be fun from start to finish. You c

One of the greatest things about "Ta Det Lungt" is the giant mass of instrumentation, which is somehow squeezed into small songs. The fuzz guitar can explore the cascading riffs, while the drums can smash or shimmer. And there's flute, Hammond, violin and gentle acoustic guitar, making up a colorful musical quilt.

Gustav Estjes has a lovely voice, frankly. I don't understand a word of what he DOES sing, but his voice is pleasantly ordinary-sounding, but still able to soar. At times, he almost sounds like John Lennon. But his biggest skill is his ability to not be overpowered by (or overpower) the music -- he sounds like a natural part of it, as if he were another instrument.

Wonderfully weird, colorfully charming, "Ta Det Lungt" brought Dungen into the spotlight, which is where they deserve to be. Definitely one of the best albums of 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Has John Lennon reincarnated as a Swede?.......2006-02-16

I say that with respect. This really is an amazing album, replete with instrumentation and production straight out of the glorious 60's. They had to have recorded this with vintage instruments, mixing consoles and analog tape. Their singing and playing may evoke The Beatles, but you won't hold it against them. Truly, Dungen has taken whatever influences from the past and made them their own. I am impressed. Make sure you buy this edition, as it comes with a bonus disc of more groovy sounds.

4 out of 5 stars Sweetness from Sweden.......2005-11-26

Unless you are from Sweden, you will not understand a word of Ta Det Lugnt. Unless you are adverse to stunning psych rock, your ass will be rocked sideways by Dungen. Hell, I'm not even a huge fan of the stuff myself, but Dungen has pulled something together with this 13 track release that has really grabbed my ears and knocked me back to about the date of my birth (almost 30 years ago now, yikes).

I think that had I heard a release like this when I was still in high school and searching for something, anything different, I would have run the other way. Now that electronic music has been glitched to high-heaven and taken in 100s of directions and rock music has been distilled and re-distilled again, it's nice to hear something that sorta takes it back to the rocking basics and does so in a very, very good way. The opening track of "Panda" very well be an ode to the bear of the same name, but after opening with some rumbling drums and absolutely scorching riffs, I think that most people would throw their rock hands in the air and not even care. Overdriven guitars alternately squeal and space out and the drumming is spot on.

"Festival" opens with strummed acoustic guitars but soon launches into a heavy wall of layered guitars and another punishing rhythm section while "Du E För Fin För Mig" starts out with an aching string quartet before building into one of the most epic sing-along tracks I've heard this entire year. At well over 8 minutes, the track stretches out to a perfect length, lolling off into trippy sections while slowly adding layers and eventually turning into a thunderous rock stomper. Imagine Sigur Ros versus Beta Band versus classic psych rock all sung in Swedish and maybe you're getting somewhere close.

Really, Ta Det Lugnt is done so well that it's not just a disc that's going to only appeal to those with a retro achilles heel. The group touches on symphonic (see the aforementioned description), garage, indie, and even stadium rock in their genre-blending release. In just over 50 minutes, there's only a relative few moments that aren't that engaging, and they're offset with some of the more stunning psychedelic rock I've heard in awhile. Unlike some bands doing somewhat similar things, Dungen has also remembered that it's the hooks that really sell the release. With catchy riffs in just about every track, Ta Det Lugnt this is a hugely fun release that might make you do a double take on first listen, but will surely suck you in.

    Album Description

Rising from relative obscurity this past year, the story of Gustav Estjes and his Swedish psych-rock outfit has mushroomed in 2005 with the re-release of their album "Ta Det Lugnt" prompting their rise to buzz-band status and garnering wide critical and commercial acclaim. Now in the wake of the band's most extensive US tour ever, Astralwerks is pleased to offer the first ever US release of the band's acomplished 2002 album "Stadsvandringar" (City Walks), the first time the album has been released outside of Sweden.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A great album and..........2006-12-30

This is a fantastic record. I wish Astralwerks would have released the vinyl verison of the album as well because it has songs not on the cd and a different song order. Or at least they should have included the vinyl only bonus track.

5 out of 5 stars Through the Stadsvandringar.......2006-07-27

Dungen's third album "Ta Det Lugnt" became an underground hit as soon as people heard the sparkling, weird psych-folk pop. People like Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips were singing Gustav Ejstes' praises.

So his second album got rushed into US stores to help meet the demand -- "Stadsvandringar," another collection of bright, unique psych-folk that is nearly as good as the latest work. This brilliant little album proves that "Ta Det Lugnt" was definitely no fluke -- it was just sheer talent.

It's a little surprising when you first hear the opening title track, which sounds kind of... country-western. Fortunately by the time Ejstes starts crooning, the song has evened out into a steady, swirling little psych-pop song. It gets echoed abruptly in the middle of the album, in the a capella "Stadsvandring Del 2."

Estjes spends the rest of the album dabbling in all sorts of different styles, sometimes with more than one style per song. There's strummy folk with tambourines, a shimmering folk-prog song, delicate psychedelica, upbeat epics, sparkly little folk tunes, an ethereal instrumental with birds chirping in the background, and what sounds like dance music for hobbits in "Stock och sten."

Dungen is the sort of band that deserves its cult following -- not only does it make interesting music, but music that is delicious, complex and still very fun and catchy. A few songs on here don't quite fit -- "Vem vaktar lejonen?" is a bit too dark and rock-y -- but the overall effect is that of wild, colourful, childlike beauty.

And one of the best things about Dungen is the instrumentation. There's loads of it -- more acoustic guitar than fuzz, and kept relatively simple musically. To dress up the folky tunes, there's plenty of tambourines, sitar, flute, lute, violin, and big sweeps of Hammond. The guitars can ride out the tunes, while the drums can smash rock'n'roll style, or sink back to do tribal beats.

I don't speak a word of Swedish, and many of Dungen's American listeners don't either. But words aren't really needed here, with Estjes singing. His voice is pleasantly ordinary, but still able to jabber, sway and croon, and even sound a bit like John Lennon. And no matter how overwhelming the music, he manages to rise above it.

If this is the sort of music that comes out of Sweden, then other countries are missing a lot. "Stadsvandringar" is colourful and catchy, another delightful album by the talented Estjes.

5 out of 5 stars Dungen. The bomb........2005-12-17

Yo. If you like their third album Tet Du Lunget or something, this one is mad sweet too. The title track is like the biggest hit of the decade. Talk about taking me to my happy place. It does it everytime. From children to adults a smile is produced on the listener. And now the re-released it. Pick it up. Those guys singing in their Sweedish language tearing it up. Who knew? These guys, I'm telling you...mad sweet. I have no idea what they are saying, which is a good thing, I'd think. So it's sweet. Hopefully they'll work on their live show a little more and totally rock skulls with a wall of sound like on the albums. But hey. Who's doing it like this. No one. Dungen. Best band in the world. Get your hands on the Jungle Book II soundtrack too...kind of the mad note.

Dungen's 2001 debut, unlike 2004's "Ta Det Lungt", relies less on songcraft and more on rampant experimentalism. The album is divided into 3 "suites", each containing many ideas and/or songs.

The opening suite, "Stadsvandringar", kicks off with reverse guitar and an extremely catchy vocal harmony (which was later reworked as the title track to their second album of the same name), then veers off into progressive rock, jazz, and folk, all within a 14 mintue time frame. The second suite, "Midsommerbongen", is mainly a sitar meditation that goes on longer than it should, but is not without its moments of intense, brain burning psychedelia. "Lilla V?nnen", the final suite, is the darkest of the three, and perhaps the best. Featuring a a flute line that would later appear on "Ta Det Lungt", and a hypnotic outro, it packs as much as possible into its 11 minute time frame and ends the album well.

For those who are new to Dungen, I would recommend starting with "Ta Det Lungt" before purchasing "1999-2001". Fans of "Ta Det Lungt", however, would do well by picking this album up, if only to see where Dungen got its start.

Two years in the making, the debut album from DC's (the sounds of) kaleidoscope more than delivers on the promise of the band's first two eps, weaving a more polished melodic finery into their beloved sheets of noise. For the uninitiated: "Imagine that Wire, post-'154', had not broken up but rather agreed to become a backing band for a coherent Syd Barrett and attempted to record pop music. If they gave it a good go it would have sounded something like this. The band combine[s] some of the mood and sound of early Pink Floyd with the minimalist guitar tones of Sonic Youth and Wire." -- The Official Fall Website

If you like the hazy take on neo-psychedelia that combines the fuzziness of Eno's first two albums and the laziness of Brian Jonestown Massacre with the experimental pop of Lilys and the layered approach of Elephant 6's heyday--notably the folkish electronics of Elf Power, then this is your record. I'd happened across this band by lateral searches with some of the abovementioned groups, and while this is not original in its take on this sound, it's satisfying, catchy, and well-sequenced. Some of the songs tend to be sketches more than elaborations, and this is the only shortcoming I can find; the band does best when allowing itself to saunter and stretch out.

4 out of 5 stars a band a lot more people should know about.......2006-02-23

i was lucky enough to see this band in brooklyn recently and from note one i was hooked. everything about the songs on the disc (which i promptly purchased after the show) falls into place perfectly: the lyrics, vocal style, fuzz, anchoring bass lines, tom-heavy drumming - all perfect.

the sounds of kaleidescope have a sound that seems natural to them but that comes out sounding forced and contrived by bands with somewhat-similar stylings that are much more popular "nationally" (brmc anyone?).

please get in the van and hit the road.

2 out of 5 stars Swedish Psyche Rock has to be good right?.......2006-03-18

I think just because this is Swedish Psyche Rock everyone is raving about it. The truth about this album is it never jumps out as being brilliant. Most of the material here is just okay, or subpar. I'm sure as a live act these guys are great, but personally I think it's a bunch of hype.

4 out of 5 stars Its actually very simple. No need to name-drop 900 genres!.......2006-03-16

I'm not swedish, so I have no clue what the lyrics are doing, but basically this album is The Beatles from Sgt. Pepper's through the white album. To those who feel they have to name-drop floyd, give a listen again to Helter Skelter and the Sgt. Pepper's reprise. I'm getting an ex of mine a copy 'cause she's such a beatles nut.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Dungen.......2006-03-09

4 out of 5 stars Another in a long series of great psychedelic albums from Sweden.......2005-12-23

I listen exclusively to psychedelic and progressive rock recorded during the late 1960s to the mid 1970s and discovering this album was like finding a long-out-of-print Swedish psych/experimental treasure from 1971 (truth be told, my boss gave it to me because it was not his cup of tea). The fact that this album was released in 2004 makes it all that much more exciting. Stylistically, this is quite a diverse album and although greatest emphasis is placed on psychedelic/experimental rock, there is an admixture of haunting Swedish folk music, European classical, ripping Hendrix inspired jamming, and quasi-cool jazz (that is, American west coast jazz - there is a brief jazzy jam section with a great spacey sax solo on Ta det Lugnt). Instrumentation on the album includes analog equipment such as a real mellotron (with the flute setting) and very churchy sounding Hammond organ, which is used as a surrogate pipe organ (Lejonet & kulan is a great example of this). I should note that mellotron playing is an art form. The tapes only sustain a note for about 8 seconds or so, and on one passage, you can hear some fumbling that suggests that the note was held too long and the tapes ran out. In fact mellotron players during the 70s would have to use inversions to keep the sound going. Although these keyboard instruments are not used nearly as much on this album as I would have liked, it is still nice to hear them in this context, albeit for the extremely brief time they are used. In stark contrast to the softer tones of the mellotron, is heavily distorted, ear-splitting, Jimi Hendrix-ian guitar work that is present on several pieces. However, being a great arranger, multi-instrumentalist bandleader Gustav Ejstes leavens the harsh distorted sounds of the electric guitar with acoustic guitar, acoustic piano, and spacier passages that utilize clean tones on the electric guitar. Other acoustic instruments include violins and woodwind instruments such as the flute. Both are used sparingly. The supporting musicians are solid and there is some decent bass guitar work and drumming on the heavier, more rocking sections. Although vocal parts are present (in Swedish), large sections of the pieces are instrumental. Vocal parts are electronically altered at times. All in all, this is a good album that continues (or more precisely - resumes) the tradition of 60s-70s Swedish psychedelic/avant garde bands such as Algarnas Tradgard and International Harvester, in addition to Swedish 70s prog/psych artists such as multi-instrumentalist Bo Hansson. I would even go so far as to recommend this album to fans of early (1969-1971) Amon Duul II and other German experimental bands of the time (e.g. Ash Ra Tempel, Guru Guru). Highly recommended to my fellow prog-heads desperately looking for interesting (and new) music.

        Album Description

On Dungen's new album, Tio Bitar, you hear a band that's positively recharged itself after riding the waves of below-ground press hype & world exposure following the release of their third record - a latter-day classic, Ta Det Lugnt. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made the new album - his fourth, a sweeping, surprising display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence largely by himself once again. Gustav wrote the songs, and played most of the instruments on his own, with assistance on guitar from Reine Fiske, whose sensibly expressive soloing follows the path of Swedish psychedelic guitar greats. The character of these songs suggests a new, unburdened direction for the belabored concept of jamming, one that hems in the melodies, borrowing some of their phrasings but spinning off into lucid counterpart, all anchored by the bass, drums, and organ. When vocals as before, sung entirely in Swedish or a flute appear, they're diverging out to a third melody, still safely within the frame, in tune with each part.

And on "Tio Bitar", You Can Hear the End Results of an Outpouring of Success and Support - One which Has, for Once, Inspired the Creative Processes at Hand to Make Something Wholly New and Original, Yet Remaining Within the Same Sphere of Emotions that Fostered Dungen's Three Previous Albums.
