Album Description
Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005
Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!

You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25
But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.
The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23
Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28
I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.
Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?

Classic Dallas........2001-06-13
The later songs range from ballads like I'VE NEVER BEEN OUT OF HIS CARE and A BROKEN HEART, which seem to come straight out of his own heart, to the somewhat playful and rocky JESUS IS A RIVER OF LOVE, and on to the intensity of I SAW THE LORD and the soaring anthem and signature song RISE AGAIN.
Pick this one up. The message it conveys is as valid today as it ever has been and the music is timeless. This CD could have been twice as long. If you can find any of his old LP's or cassettes, I would highly recommend them.

Product Description
Pioneer, legend and forerunner are all terms that have been used to describe Dallas Holm, a long time veteran of Christian music. He has always loved the blues but struggled to find the right formula to create Christian blues. The struggle is over! This CD contains everything from good kickin' electric blues and horn sections to old accoustic "small room" blues. It delivers the goods musically but even more so lyrically.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud" when he visited Dallas in summer 1968. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Live and Loud captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud," the anthem that would become his last pop-chart top 10 entry for nearly two decades, when he visited Dallas on a summer 1968 leg of his then-ongoing tour. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Loud and Live captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. And the memorabilia-laden CD booklet ("We know the Negro deejay won't play this record ... but every BLACK deejay will play this record!") is as essential as the music. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

WILD, WILD STUFF!! PLAY IT LIVE AND LOUD!.......2007-01-06
BUT- let us never forget the band that James Brown fired (minutes before they could quit) that night, with their lead, by the name of Maceo. They appear here, and show us, quite loud and powerfully- that James Brown had already established what was the face of Funk music. And while that band that James Brown replaced them with has gone down as legends in their own right- they had nothing on this beast.
This era of the Godfather, is without a doubt his wildest and craziest era overall. Ooozing with raw energy- this live performance showcases it nice and tight in one very solid package.
James Brown wrote the tunes, orchestrated the band, and shows he's got the moves and the pipes like nobody else.. but the band itself is capable of anything, it seems. Listen to the change-ups from one song to the next. Theres no breaks anywhere. Proffesional Jazz Musicians practice this type of stuff for over thirty years- these guys were in their twenties- hitting every nail on the head. They are trained and true, and no one falls out of step, yet they suprise you at every turn. Three numbers in the middle without James Brown... still smokin'. Maceo shows us all a little thing called The Tighten Up...
One action packed scorcher of a show, fans of any type of music will likely be blown away by this disc.
God Bless The Godfather of Soul.
Ladies and Gentlemen James Brown, JAMES BROWN!.......2006-12-08
Powerful, funky, historic, a bundle of frenetic energy~ The thing that knocks me out about this recording besides some of the best cuts of the band of that period live is the SHOW. You get to hear the roles of the band members in the presentation that was "The James Brown Show". This was not just a singer and a band that got up there and played and entertained for a couple of hours or so. This was a multifaceted entertainment machine! Tight, slick and having a great time being the best! Do not miss an instant of this recording, even the introductions and goodbyes.
Maceo is a revelation on this recording. If you think of him as a rhythmic alto player, wait till you hear the burning tenor solo on Suds. I mean, James Brown has left the stage and the energy level gets higher!!! How can that be? Not to mention a developing front man in his own right. He is not alone, the band is great, the names that you know inventing this music right there on stage. Peewee Ellis wrote great, flexible arrangements and band turns on a dime!! James cues, the band jumps!
By the end of the CD, tempos are flyin'!! Cold sweat is waaaay fast. Not the kind of thing you record for a 45 but exactly what is needed this particular evening with this crowd. The Soulbrother #1 reads the crowd perfectly and takes them further than they expected they could go. Ya just gotta keep it goin'. Keep winding em', keep em' dancin' up and send them higher, higher higher!!!! James dancing, women screaming, Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me while I boogaloo."
This is a show!!!

Masterful performances.......2007-05-24
The other pieces on this disc are also wonderful, especially the Korngold. I respectefully disagree with the earlier reviewer about the Korngold being too cliché and corny, but as the old Romans said, "De gustibus non disputandum est."
If you are a Heifitz fan, or these three great masters of film music, you can't go wrong with this CD.

Simply Great.......2003-09-29
Rosza's concerto is one of his greatest works, and a much overlooked masterpiece.
The Korngold, on the other hand, has its moments, but is mired in worn-out cliches. More Korn than Gold. The performance is also disappointing...there are several places where the soloist and orchestra are not in tempo (particularly the last movement).
A recommended disc.

Authentic? Maybe, But Unbalanced........2007-07-08
Concerning concertos nos.1&4 and the Paganini Rhapsody I would say the answer is definitely yes. These are beautiful, highly romantic, well reasoned performances neither too fast nor too slow with neither too much nor too little rubato. Adding to the authenticity is the inclusion of missing wind parts in the third movement of the fourth concerto which apparently are to be found only in one other recorded version, that of Rachmaninov himself with the Philadelphia Orchestra some 70 or so years ago. These three performances may be enough in themselves to make it worth purchasing the set.
The performances of nos. 2&3 on disc 2 are a somewhat different story.
It is generally true that Stephen Hough plays these two pieces more like Rachmaninov did than most modern performances, in that he plays certain segments faster. However he compromises the quality of both pieces somewhat by doing things that Rachmaninov did not do. Many performances of no.2 suffer from playing the opening theme of the first movement too slowly with too much rubato causing it drag a bit and fragment. In Rachmaninov's recordings he and the orchestra play it significantly faster than many modern recordings as does Hough and the Dallas Symphony. However Mr.Hough goes too far in that he plays the opening piano chords much too fast with little or no rubato. While Rachmaninov played it faster than many recordings he is noticeably slower than Hough, especially at first, speeding up a little with slight touches of rubato, causing a more satisfying building of the drama. However The rest of the first movement in Hough's performance is fine and the other two movements are right on the money.
A composer can be incorrect about one of his own pieces concerning how it should best be performed. It is possible that Rachmaninov performed his third piano concerto too fast. The young Vladimir Horowitz whose performance the composer preferred almost certainly did. A number of more modern recordings can be too slow and stately, such as that by Vladimir Ashkenazy with Andre Previn in the seventies which is very beautiful. It seems an extremely difficult task to find a recording that has the right balance between the two. Hough is definitely on the fast side but not unreasonable until the close of the final which he machine guns through without missing a note and is topped off by the closing orchestral chords so fast and even that you feel emotionally, not ecstatic, but almost as though you've been shot. Again Rachmaninov and the Philadelphia are ever so slightly slower with rhythmic variation adding much to the drama working listeners to emotional frenzy. Funny what a little rubato can do.
painful.......2007-04-10
Good new recording, with a few remarks.......2007-01-19
Although the recording quality itself is really good (especially for a live recording), the mastering is quite soft, which makes this CD sound softer than most other classical CD's. Pity!
Just details, though. Stephen Hough's masterful piano technique ensures a sublime experience of some of the finest piano concertos ever written.
An absolute stunner.......2006-07-27
It's not just the virtuosic bravura and utter refinement of the pianism, but what sets Hough apart from everybody else is his sense of timing and complete avoidance vulgar Soviet-style emoting. Hough's sense of tempo rubato, lingering in the beginning of the phrase before rushing towards the climax, is a lost art that was common practiced by the greatest artists from the beginning of the 20th century (such as Rachmaninoff himself, Tauber, Cortot, Heifetz, Kreisler...).
I urge people to follow these performances with a score in hand. It is an objective lesson in how maximum expressive freedom (often shockingly revelatory) can be achieved by a thorough understanding of a composer's rhetoric and notations.
GETTING A BIT THICK IN HERE.......2006-06-16
The negative reviews, unfortunately, have it right. As a performer of Rachmaninoff, Hough is the best Saint-Saens interpreter there is.
Hough makes these concerti sound like watered-down Gershwin. That's all. Some people respond to this: some people respond to the cheap and flashy. Others do not. Still others resent the transformation of diamonds into rhinestones.
The cover with a cigarette-biting Rach is appropriate. When listening to these discs, one can almost smell a cheap cigar, and maybe see a ring with a glass topaz being waved around.
And yes, Hough's claims of "authenticity" are a laugh. Just put on Rach's old recordings and hear the difference. Astonishing. Not that everyone should (or could) play like Rach. But then, not everyone claims they do, now do they?
Also laughable, in my opinion, are comments about "heart-wrenching" soul in these performances. What soul? Maybe if you've never heard these pieces before, they sound emotional here. But it seems to me the big distinction of these interpretations is that they completely dispense with the "soul and emotion" side of this music. (There is some superficial color in the Fourth Concerto, though, which I guess passes for soulfulness.)
