Director Lasse Hallstrom's recipe for Chocolat is bittersweet, a tale of human hope and frailty imbued with no small amount of symbolism. This is a powerful soundtrack with a meditteranean feel, an evocative reminder of an outstanding film. There is a wonderful mix of melodies - some beautiful, haunting, melancholic and intrigueing, others joyful and uplifting. It's a bit of classical mixed with a bit of latin guitar and a touch of gypsy. A couple of the tracks are Johnny Depp playing multi-layered ethnic guitar solo. Superb. I had to have it. Try it. You'll be glad you did.

An absolutely fabulous collection of music, we play it continuously, there is something organic about. Certain Tracks stir a very deep feeling and reminds me of picnics by the riverside. Whilst playing and reading to which section of the film each piece belongs, it brings back very clear images of the Actors and the part they played. A Great film and superb music.

In 2001, five Roma (the correct term for the people known as "Gypsies") ensembles joined forces for a never-to-be-forgotten road trip called "The Gypsy Caravan Tour." Its rather difficult to review this in the regular like it/don't like it way. This is the endemic music of the people along the silk road the runs across Asia. Some of it sounds very strange compared to Western music, like study for an Anthropology course, while some of it very enjoyable.

Northern Exposure.......2007-03-30

This anthology is an outstanding survey of the northern section of the so-called Silk Road, taking us from Turkey, Azerbaijan,and Iran, through Uzbekistan, southern Siberia, China, and finally to Japan, but not in order, as the CD set is organized instead by category of musical function and the localities seem random. Although there are significant gaps in the styles, and I particularly miss the sweet lyric songs of Kyrgyz women, the powerful mugham voice of Qasimov of Azerbaijan, and more examples of the kylkobyz fiddle of Kzakhstan, the set provides a fine introduction of the musics of inner Asia and particularly the instruments. A glossary of instruments is provided, but unfortunately their images are often lacking. All the examples are short by necessity, when many traditional pieces are far longer in duration. For the uninitiated, it will take repeated listening to distinguish the uniqueness of timbre and rhythm from one land to the other; but this similarity of sounds helps demonstrate the role of the trade routes in sharing instruments and styles, such that the Japanese biwa, the Chinese pipa, and the Arabic oud all are related. If you want to attain some feel for the musics of inner Asia, then certainly these disks will meet the requirement.

The Land of Grey and Pink.......2007-05-08

Maybe it could be because I was born in the wrong time, being only 33 years old, this album being a tad older, or maybe being the best kept secret in England's Canterbury district (town), I don't know. But one thing I got to say since I have heard the title song of this album, you don't get sick of it at all and why didn't these guys get as famous or more so than the Pink Floyd. I am a true fan of the singer/bass player Richard Sinclair, very rich and deep with a haunting sound betraying such great songs on this album. Every song on this album deserves recognition:

Each one of these gems have a familar sound to it like you've heard it before in another time and it's a good feel. It is almost like Floyd or any progressive sounding material during this time but better, you even hear a little of Yes in here and even funny enough Rare Earth covering a Temptation song in Nine Feet Underground, near the end of the song. This group is really tight and it shows in their music indeed, too bad I didn't hear of them until recently in my life. And if you like this album, you'll like their other album 'If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You', funny name by the way.

A wonderful mix of pop and progressive.......2007-02-07

This 1971 album is easily the most cheery and upbeat record that I have in my collection. It is an excellent example of the pop/prog side of the Canterbury scene (which is actually more diverse than most would make it out to be), is both warm and inviting, and boasts some solid musicianship - in short, this is a fantastic recording that brings me a great deal of enjoyment.

The core musicians on this album comprise what I consider to be the definitive Caravan lineup: Richard Sinclair (bass, acoustic guitar, and vocals); Pye Hastings (electric/acoustic guitars; vocals): David Sinclair (Hammond organ; mellotron; backing vocal harmonies); and Richard Coughlan (drums and percussion). Joining the band are Jimmy Hastings (flute, tenor saxophone; and piccolo); and David Grinstead (cannon, bell, and "wind"). All of the guys are good players although I have to say that Richard Sinclair is the best: his bass work with Caravan, Hatfield and the North, and Camel is excellent. Richard also has a great singing voice, as does Pye Hastings and their vocal approach works very well with the material.

I think that of all of the Canterbury bands (and other English progressive bands active at the time), Caravan stuck closer to the "pop song" format. Because of this, you will neither encounter the use of staggeringly complex time signatures, nor odd chords and root movements. Instead, the pieces on In the Land of Grey and Pink feature very pleasant melodies, and are mostly mid-tempo, without any jarring or experimental passages. There is also the classic Canterbury sense of humor, as evidenced by song titles such as Golf Girl and "Hold Grandad by the Nose". Most of the tracks on the album are in the 3-8 minute range, with the single exception of the massive 22'40" Nine Feet Underground suite.

This remastered album features the original (and excellent) album art with loads of informative liner notes. The bonus tracks include several tracks that should have been included on the original record (e.g Aristocracy), whereas the remaining bonus tracks are simply alternate takes/versions.

This is a great album lumped under the Canterbury scene and is very highly recommended to folks that do not mind a less technically-oriented approach to prog rock along with the excellent For Girls who Grow Plump in the Night (1973).

A Classic.......2006-11-22

This album is rightly considered one of the classic albums of the Canterbury progressive rock style which gained considerable popularity in the early 70's. Caravan really hit their stride on this their 3rd album and many consider it to be the band's best. Still with the band's original lineup this album plays to the strengths of the songwriters and musicians. It is a great mix of prog rock, pop, and at times just plain nonsense that works on many levels. The lyrics are very hippie-ish expressing a positive idealism that is rare in today's world. The pop-ish tracks "Golf Girl" "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" and "Love To Love You" are all instantly humable and stick in your brain like good pop should. The proggier stuff "Winter Wine" and the classic album closer "Nine Feet Underground" show a band at the top of their game. "Nine Feet Underground" has become Caravan's "Free Bird" with its 22 minute length and uninhibited jamming it has become an essential part of the Caravan set list to this day. Although the album sounds a bit dated today, it is still a great listen. The remastered version (released in 2001) sounds great and has several bonus tracks.

Wonderfully unforgettable..........2006-09-08

So, why does an album sound so incredibly fresh & alive well over thirty years after its release? Well, if there was an easy answer everybody would be doing it, but sometimes things just work... and Caravan's masterpiece does just that. First time through its bizarre, often childish lyrics may leave you feeling that you've dropped into a whimsical Edward Lear-esque hippy-fest... but careful because it'll get to you, and once it does you'll be hooked. Why? Well in addition to being infused with catchy melodies, perfectly metered lyrics, excellent playing, clever arrangements, and a highly distinctive feeling of pastoral "Englishness", there's something running through it all that elevates it from an interesting, relatively obscure slice of early 70's folk-jazz-rock into a "classic". Don't ask me what but it's different, unforgettable and above all timeless.

A High Point in Progressive Music.......2006-08-14

Without fluffing this up too much, I just want to state that the reason this album works so well is because of one man: Richard Sinclair. Perhaps I am partial to his music and achievements outside of Caravan, but I can see no other reason why this album has succeeded where many others in the band catalogue have not. The previous two albums in the Caravan discography are nice enough and worth checking out, but they seem to be lacking. The band was fully entrenched in the quirky psychadelic music of the late 60's, but aside from some moments on "If I Could Do it All Over....", there aren't any strong, distinctive elements that set the group apart from its peers.

During the production of this album, "In the Land of Grey and Pink", for whatever reason, Richard Sinclair came into his own as a songwriter. His writing and performances on the album are far from stunning: he's a decent enough singer, can pluck out a few chords on the guitar, but certainly no virtuoso. No, what Sinclair brought to this album was his sense of humor and fun. The whole thing begins with the classic "Golf Girl", a silly and campy song about a man who falls in love with a golf course employee. The melody and chord changes are nothing revolutionary, but again there is a light-heartedness to the song that is instantly appealing, even if the lyrics make little sense.

In my opinion, the best track on the album is "Winter Wine", another Richard Sinclair composition. The song begins with Richard plucking on an acoustic guitar and singing a folk-sy tale of yearning, castles, dragons, and various other fantastical things. The song picks up steam at roughly the 1:00 point, with a strong guitar riff and drum beat. The progression is pretty steady throughout its length, with plenty of jamming on organ & guitar, courtesy of Dave Sinclair (Richard's cousin) and Pye Hastings, respectively. The key to this song is that it is lovely, it also grooves, and it is fun.

Pye provides his sole contribution to the album "Love to Love You", which has a simple but catchy feel to it. The song has its own sense of fun, and the music is strongly appealing, but lacks the absurd humor of the Sinclair tracks previous to it. Coincidentally, the shortest track on the album.

The title track: again, nothing ground-breaking in terms of song writing, but it is good fun and Sinclair sings about all sorts of strange nonsense. The wonderful thing is that the absurdity is never off-setting.

The monster on this recording is "Nine Feet Underground", courtesy of Dave Sinclair. This is among the fan favorite recordings of the band, and it's not hard to see why. Unlike the previous tracks, it has many extended instrumental passages, with plenty of organ playing and grooves from the band. Strangely enough, the song doesn't FEEL as long as it does, and almost places the listener in a trance. The solos are never overly complicated, which is sometimes a fresh change from the million-notes-per-second mentality of other prog groups.

Plenty of bonus tracks here, but I won't get into them (this review is long enough!). My overall feeling about this album is that, although it doesn't have a ground-shattering effect on the music scene, it does present Caravan as a fresh and unique voice in any field of music. Unfortunately Richard Sinclair would leave the band after this album, and Caravan would continue to provide us with catchy, sometimes epic songs with Pye Hastings trademark dry humor and arrangements (see For Girls Who Grow album). This is so much fun, very much a product of its time and almost Brit-centric humor, but a worthy purchase!

I have six Peter White albums, and "Caravan of Dreams" is tied with "Glow" as his best work. The bassist on "Caravan of Dreams" is better than in his other albums, and the final songs finish strong on both albums.

I can listen to a countless number of smooth jazz cds and still be entertained. Many cds sound alike, however this one sounds slightly different. The sounds are diverse, and are not completely linear(the same thing over and over again). The first song, Caravan of Dreams, is great. I enjoy City of Lights and Long Ride Home just as much. The other songs are good too. Each song stands out, but those three are worth the price of the cd alone.

Last the only thing that I miss from this CD is the recording quality. I wish they will launch the SACD or XRCD version very soon so we can enjoy with good high-end setup.

Smooth jazz in hands of a velvet guitar.......2004-06-09

The actual generation jazz is supported by the guitar as the starring instrument. So the keyboards ruled in the eighties and the sax in the seventies.
I don't mean this as a fundamental statement but a clue approach to invites you to think about. Think, for instance in the the two top master keyboards, Gregg Karukas and Brian Culbertson and Dave Koz , Rick Braun as fundamental musicians.
Chuck Loeb is a major guitarrist too, but I'd rather prefer White may be due his musical ideas are supported by more innovative conceptions. In this album you may find out a particular universe in every track.
Which one of these tracks is your favorite? It's a difficult answer, but you'll find a delightful reason for Caravan of dreams or Venice beach. Ten tracks filled with beating sounds and musicality.
Obviously who can deny the huge influence that Wes Montgomery still surrounds to the new generations?
Wes became a kind of big tree who involves the spirit of legend guitar as George Benson, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Golub, Stanley Jordan or Jinathan Butler.
Buy this. One of the best albums in 1996 and still sound Ok. It doesn't age just a bit!.

I bought this at the recommendation of my bellydance instructor. I was not disappointed. It's a great mix of slow, fast, instrumental and vocal accompanied arabic music. Not very traditional, but suited my practice purposes perfectly.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often asked to give thoughts on various rock and roll recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Caravan entered their golden period with this release (Their 2nd) in 1970. This album and the next three:
In The Land Of Grey And Pink
Waterloo Lilly
For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night

showed the group at their best. While some would call them progressive rock it is closer to the Progressive/Psychedelic Canterbury Sound.

You may have been told how strong a guitar-player Pye Hastings is but he should also be applauded along with bass-player Richard Sinclair for perfectly placed and phrased vocals.

The album is consistant throughout. The track that has been given the most notice since its release is "For Richard" but please don't think they are a one trick pony. Caravan will grab your attention as soon as the opening cut is coming from your speakers and you'll receive some excellent bonus tracks to further bring you into the fold.

Caravan can also be respected greatly because they had a sound in mind and weren't concerned with record company pressure to get them more airplay.

Once the last notes play of this fine release you will be wanted the other three mentioned albums.

Caravan is very late 1960s and early 1970s, but the songs are certainly fun to list to.

Originally released in 1970,this was the UK progressive/Canterbury band's second album.This is like maybe the fourth Caravan CD I've ever heard. Not an artist I'll listen to all the time, but I do tend to like their epics very much so. Tracks here I found to be most inspiring were the jamming opener title cut "If I Could Do It All Over Again...", the folk progressive piece "With An Ear To The Ground" and the fourteen minute "Can't Be Long Now". Keep in mind their epics are usually quite brilliant. Plus, this CD reissue has seven bonus tunes tagged on. Another reason to add this title to your want list.

Absolutely essential and full of surprises!.......2005-11-17

Wow! I had forgotten just how great this album really is. I put on the remastered cd last night with a good pair of headphones and was instantly transported back in time. Beautiful melodies smoothly but quite unexpectedly segue into hard-hitting (though highly structured) jams that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Dave Sinclair's keyboards absolutely rock while the rest of the band cooks right along with him. The addition of Jimmy Hastings' flute and sax adds so much colour and depth to the extended pieces--top notch playing all around! I really love the "Englishness" of the vocals and lyrics, with their typically understated humour and charm. What else can I say? Together with "In The Land of Grey and Pink" this is the best stuff Caravan ever did, though "For Girls Who Grow..." is pretty close in overall quality and intensity. It's worth mentioning that the sound quality of the remastered disc is quite good (Richard Sinclair's bass sounds wonderful and I have a whole new appreciation for Richard Coughlan's excellent drumming) and the liner notes are insightful and interesting. Sorry for gushing, but I'm still on a cloud after hearing this again for the first time in quite awhile. Hurry and get it and be sure to buy a copy for a good friend. They'll love you for it. Caravan at their best.......2004-11-28

Since its first appearance in 1970 this album was acclaimed by critics (Melody Maker, Sept. 1970) as one of most singular albums of the year. At that time the rock scene was changing faster and faster. New bands grow up like mushrooms, but in spite oh that, very few of them produced a really original sound.
Surely Caravan were one of them and this album represents a very good example, their best I think, of their unique style that has survived with great honour to the severe judgements of time.

My husband and I LOVE this cd, the songs are well crafted and catchy, the artists are highly talented, and you will be tapping your foot without knowing you did it!- I dance and sing along to this cd, and you will also. Whereas it may not cover all the areas that the Rom have traveled, I highly recommend this compilation as a great starter or addition to any collection. If you are a Dancer- this CD is a must have. We love to listen to it on road trips as the miles slip by hardly noticed through the joy of the music.

A good sampler........2004-02-02

The music in this compilation is as varied and the musicians as spread out as the gypsies themselves. The four tracks from the Hungarian groups stands out the most because they have a haunting sadness to them interceded with hallow drums and passionate guitars. Track 5 from France is playful while Coco Brival's "Le Yeux Noirs" reminds one of the style the Gypsy Kings have made familiar throuthout the world. For me the song that stays with me the most is "Codru." It is full of sorrow in a romantic sort of way. It is the way I typically romanticize the lives of Gypsies,that's why it is my favorite. Over all, this is a good compilation for people trying to investigate the flavor of European gypsy music. All the songs are wonderful to listen to. Some reviewers are already recommending other compilations and musicians to try. This is the great thing about Putumayo World Music, it serves as a window into other worlds that we can visit thru beautiful music.

But with this CD I found myself dancing, swaying, and shaking as I worked in the garage or cooked in the kitchen, I even put a speaker in the backyard so I could dance as I picked veggies from the garden. This music filled me with joy and accented and at times overwhelmed my other hobbies. While the CD did lack a selection from the Romany indian roots, it did provide a wide range of Romany styles from the Hungarian to French to Spanish to the obscure Russo/Slavic Romany. I was also intrigued by this CD by its modern sound as tradtional Romany melodies were merged with progressive airs to show that this music is alive and growing and not a just an anthropological genre of folk songs. So if you want a sample of the roots of Gypsy Music and discover where it has been, Latcho Drom , or other fine CDs can help you, but if you want to Dance to the rythmns of where it is going then this CD is for you.

Pleasant but lacks bite, the Manteca compilation is better.......2003-07-26

Putumayo's compilation of gypsy music follows their usual vein of output: palatable introduction for neophytes, but not always the most inspiring or brilliant material. Nevertheless there are some gems on this CD that truly have the gypsy fire (Diri Diri So Kerdjan, Pena) but others are rather maudlin. I've travelled extensively through Eastern Europe and seen the gypsies in their natural habitat (brass bands in the Balkans, Budapest violin ensembles, Romanian tarafs) and I can assure you they sound spunkier and more soulful than some of these artists (who are a bit too polished). So buy the CD and get acquainted with the music, but remember this is a rather glossy take on the Rom culture. A much better compilation is Manteca's "From an early age: the incredible music of the gypsies" featuring giants such as Vera Bila, Esma Redzepova, Taraf de Haidouks, Muzsikas, Roomal, Fanfare Ciocarlia and a host of other luminaries. Also highly recommended is Saban Bajramovic's new album "Gypsy Legend" which is truly brilliant (he contributes probably the best track on this compilation, Pena).

Think of this compilation as the junior high school of gypsy music: important and providing the necessary foundations for further study, but by no means the apex of achievement.

For funky, Southern Fried Christmas.......2005-11-18

As opposed to covering the usual cannon of tired Christmas songs, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have managed to record an album of completely original music, save one song, that sounds as though it came from another era. Instead of dabbling in pastiche or novelty, they have created music that is a legitamit entry into whatever genre they choose to tip their hat. It's become a holiday staple in my house, and it seems such a shame to only listen to it precious few weeks of the year. Highly recommend!

I was surprised by some negative reviews for this album. This is one of my most favorite Christmas albums and have been tempted to listen to this album at other points of the year. Some great fun songs that help bring out the spirit of the year and a nice change of pace from the traditional Christmas music that gets played to death during the season. I highly recommend adding this CD to your collection.

This CD is a great collection of tunes which bring back Christmas memories for those of us who are the same age as the guys (and gal) who wrote the song. The Kronos Quartet have been luminaries of modern Western classical music for more than thirty years. Eight of its twelve tracks feature superstar Bollywood film playback singer Asha Bhosle, widely considered the world's most recorded vocalist. Warning: this CD is addictive.......2007-01-12

Now in her early 60s, Asha Bhosle's voice has matured since the heyday of her Bollywood career in the 60s-70s and in these reworkings of some of her greatest hits (written by her late husband R.K.Burman) it's positively honey-like. The collaboration with Kronos Quartet is inspired: substitute electronically enhanced violins for Duane Eddy guitars and you have an inkling of the ideas flying around the disc. The liner notes are informative and there's plenty of information for the Bollywood novice. However, whether you understand Hindi or not, this is a collection of songs - humorous, romantic, tacky, and at times so hilariously naff in the way of Indian homages to western pop it's actually cool! I would be amazed if you don't want to keep going back to it, once heard.

Clever, but...........2006-04-07

Chronos has always emphasized being clever over being musical- although they are splendid musicians- and this album is perhaps the ultimate exegesis of that. The actual music is perhaps exotic, to western ears, but it is also uninteresting. Indian film music combines the sound of the East with the banality of pop, and the result isn't anything that bears more than one listening; personally, I was continually reminded of the incidental Indian-themed music that kept popping up in the Beatles' movie "Help", although that soundtrack was a bit more clever. Another volume for the library of the die-hard Chronos fan, perhaps, but not necessarily anyone alse.

Bhosle, Pavrotti, Sinatra.......2006-02-12

Some vocalists are one-of-a-kind, brilliant and beautiful, setting the standard for their particular music. Asha Bhosle is one of them. I heard her with the Kronos in performance in San Francisco, and they took my breath away. This album isn't quite the same as being there but it's very, very close. Asha, Kronos - please do it again!

Cheap music.......2006-01-02

I dont know how the kronos quartet to come down so low. The music is cheap. I couldn't hear any of the tracks completely. They were so insipid.Complete waste of money. I have heard much better from Asha.

I Think They Should Have Selected a More Contemporary Singer.......2005-11-05

I love Asha Bhosle and one only has to listen to her Live at the Albert Hall album. Problem is, she has aged, and her voice shows it. Regrettably, her vocals on this album constantly remind me of this and I can't listen to the album with pleasure. I would say the same of such wonderful singers as June Carter and Amalia Mendoza. This was a wonderful opportunity to introduce much of the world to the zaniness of Bollywood movie music, with its fabulous arrangements and wacky use of all imaginable instruments from all over the world. Instead it makes me sad to hear Asha not at her peak.
