Customer Reviews:
Behind the Eyes Amy Grant.......2007-05-20
Hello, this CD has some good songs on it too. I like she sounds on this one. It has some happy songs on it.
One of Amy's best pop albums..........2006-10-05
This is a sad and thoughtful album, indeed, and Amy writes one of the saddest songs on this album (Missing you). Many of the songs are about unrequited love, marriage, and hardships in life. This album def. reflects Amy's feelings on her marriage to Gary Chapman, and her love for Vince Gill. It is a beautiful, heartfelt album from a beautiful singer. Buy it if you like Amy's previous pop albums, or if you like sad songs (Which I do!)
Choice tracks:
Nobody home
Cry a river,
Leave it all behind,
Missing you,
The feeling that I had,
Somewhere down the road.
Good stuff, if not overwhelmingly strong..........2006-06-24
I grew up listening to Amy Grant. Her "The Collection" album is one of my absolute favorites. Not only is the music great, but the lyrics are profound and powerful.
In contrast, the music in this album is much simpler, and that's not a bad thing. This has a very accoustic, almost bluesy, feel to it at parts, and it's a very pleasant sound.
The slight disappointment with "Behind the Eyes" is the somewhat generic lyrics. In contrast to her earlier work (which was primarily written by others), some of these songs are downright cheesy. ("It takes a little time to turn the Titanic around." Come on!!)
In any case, I still enjoy this album and definitely recommend it.
Behind the Eyes - An Intimate Look into the Heart of Amy Grant!.......2006-03-26
Some albums are pure fluff - they serve as the soundtrack for roadtrips and lazy summer days in the sun, when life is good and all's right with the world. And then there are albums that change your life. These albums make you re-evaluate your journey on earth and lift you up on a ray of hope by simply reminding you that in your darkest hours, when life is messy and full of problems too great to bear, you're not alone. Amy Grant's "Behind the Eyes" is just such an album for me.
Initially, the dramatic shift in both lyrical content and production on "Behind the Eyes" from the synth pop sound of one of my then favorite albums, 1994's "House of Love," was incredibly jarring. After years of anticipating new music from Amy, I didn't quite know what to make of the album but I kept listening. In September of 1997, I had just entered my freshman year of high school and, like Amy, was doing a lot of growing while I explored the various themes and emotions on "Behind the Eyes." After a while I warmed up to the album and over the next couple of years it seemed that every few months I'd cite a different song from "Behind the Eyes" as my new favorite, depending on my mood and stance in life. Through crushes and first loves, breakups and funerals, September 11, 2001 and my recent graduation from college, the album provided the soundtrack to my constantly maturing view of the world both echoing my joy at reaching a new stage in my life and comforting my sorrow when events ultimately ended.
Today, I listen to "Behind the Eyes" more frequently than any other Amy Grant album and with each new listen it continues to reveal layers of depth and meaning to me, even when I thought I knew the album inside and out. I'm constantly finding new levels of solace and hope and peace within Amy's honest lyrics. Her pain and suffering throughout the writing and recording process of "Behind the Eyes" shines through the finished product and that rawness elevates the album to a higher status; a benchmark, if you will, among her accomplished discography that all future albums will no doubt be judged against.
With all I've said, I'm not sure how to end this review. I will say, though, that "Behind the Eyes" IS NOT OUT OF PRINT! For everyone desiring a copy of this album, check your local Christian Book/Music retailer. They can most likely special order it for you if they do not have it in stock or you can simply avoid the middleman and order it yourself at http://www.christianbook.com. I've bought products from them in the past and I can attest that they are an extremely reliable online retailer. It is a shame that Amazon.com doesn't carry what is arguably the best album of Amy's pop career in the 90s!
Dismayed...........2006-03-17
I was just planning to buy this Audio CD of the masterful Amy Grant, and - I see that it is (in the words of the book world) "out-of-print"!). I remember playing this album years ago on long walks during a very dark time. And to be honest, great music like this can literally save a life, just for companion's sake. Hopefully, "Behind the Eyes" - one of Amy Grant's absolute best albums of all time - will be back. Right now, all I can do is pray that I will be able to "meet" her there, once again.

Boy has this guy tapped into my childhood pain! I thought I had exericised those
demons years ago, and there they are with each listen of this record. I found
a funny video through a link on youtube that led me to his myspace page -
his myspace WORLD is more like it - I've never seen anything like it beofre
(after it takes 5 minutes to load of course).
Great songs, incredible voice and overall good vibe - certainly a welcome
change to all the crap that is on the radio - YUK! Anyway - I like it and
its worth a trip to his mypace page just to check it out - if you don't
like the music you can't help but love the world he has created there!

Gilding the Lilly.......2007-02-05
The selection of songs for this cd is excellent, however unable to leave well enough along they include overblown intros, restarts, embellishments etc making the original tune almost unrecognizable. The arranger should be shot.
Excellent!.......2006-03-23
Beautifully patriotic. Even if your not British.
This is music that makes your upper lip stiff.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Best collection of marches!.......2006-08-07
In spite of the mixed reviews below, after listening to the samples, I had to send for this CD. I am so glad I did - this is the best collection of marches I have ever owned. It's worth noting that the Band of the Grenadier Guards is a British military band whose history goes back 300 years!
The Best Sousa Album.......2005-09-06
This is the best album of marches I've heard. I agree with the reviewer who said they like these versions better. The orchestral versions are good, but I used to play in the band in high school (no, I don't have any "this one time, at band camp..." stories), so I like this type better.
Sousa Marches.......2005-08-15
I like this CD better than any of the others I previewed, and when it came I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the CD to use with my dog, Nina. She loves it and it has helped her relax and gait more smoothly in preparation for exhibiting in dog shows. This CD was the only one that wasn't performed by a string orchestra. It's more like you would actually hear a marching band at a half-time football game.
There are 2 sections in this CD.......2005-06-30
There are two different sections in this CD. Section 1 includes marches 1 to 12 and it is not the best recording that I have ever hear for Sousa Marches. However, Section 2 includes marches 13 to 23 and I consider that this is one of the best recording I have ever heard for the marches of the USA Services. So, even if the two sections are very different, you may buy this CD if you have never listened the Sousa marches; it will give you the opportunity to hear them. After that, if you wish to buy a high quality CD of Sousa Marches, continue to shop on Amazon.
A Bit TOO "Budget Buy" For Sousa.......2004-05-16
I have become quite the Sousa fan in the past year. While my ear for classical music is that of a casual fanboy and not a seasoned classical music critic, I have become particular in my Sousa preferences, and this particular release left me cold. The pace of the marches on this CD are sluggish, and sounds tinny even to a listener with a tin ear.
John Philip Sousa marches are just too good and lively to settle for a budget release like this. A good release like those by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band series is a better place to start your Sousa collection!

Album Description
After appearing in the early bands of Todd Rundgren (Woody's Truck Stop) and Daryl Hall (Gulliver), Tim Moore emerged as a leading songwriter in the 1970s, having had his material recorded by Art Garfunkel ("Second Avenue"), The Bay City Rollers ("Rock And Roll Love Letter"), Richie Havens, Etta James and Cher. These two albums were his first releases with a major record label. "Tim Moore is a pop maestro...[with] an exquisite understanding of pop structure and melody." (Joe Viglione, Allmusic.com)
Customer Reviews:
A LONG AWAITED BARGAIN.......2006-01-07
Tim Moore was one of the talented singer/songwriter of the 70's but his works were only re-issued in CDs just in the recent few years. I was surprised to see this CD containing all songs from his first two albums. The song "Second Avenue" alone is worth a third of the price and there are many more well-written ballads to make up the rest of your investment. On this one, "For The Minute", "Lay Down A Line To Me", "Now I See", "Charmer", "Love Enough", "A Fool Like Me", "The Night We First Sailed Away" are all great songs. It's a really good bargain.
I hope to see more of his latter works being re-issued like this.

Wild and Crazy!.......2001-07-04
These guys are Wild, we need more of good times like this in todays music! Good old fashion fun and nobody gets hurt, well, maybe Hitler. Just a good time CD, enjoyed it a lot!
A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19
This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

Customer Reviews:
Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21
No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.
