4 out of 5 stars 'AM Gold - 1965' (Warner Special Products) Various Artists.......2006-10-14

Total of 22 tracks from 1965, several that I have truly fond memories of hearing them blasting out of the family station wagon when I was a kid. Cuts like Petula Clark's "Downtown", Tom Jone's heart throb of a gem "What's New Pussycat?", Righteous Brother's "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" (have always like The Firm's version of this tune as well), Peter And Gordon's "I Go To Pieces" and the(sort of)obscure We Five sole hit "You Were Always On My Mind", a lot of oldie fans I've talked with simply don't remember these guys. Recommended.

Living in the Netherlands was no problem for a quick delivery.

5 out of 5 stars Sixties group including Eric Stewart.......2005-03-03

Formed in Manchester in 1963, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders had several hits together and separately. Their first two hits together (Hello Josephine, Stop look and listen) made only a limited impact but they followed them with a cover of Um um um um um (Major Lance), which made the UK top five. Next came Game of love, which made number two in the UK and also became a major international hit. The follow-up (Just a little too late) only just made the UK top twenty while the one after that (She needs love) was only a minor hit. After that, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders went their separate ways.

Wayne Fontana had four UK hits of his own (It was easier to hurt her, Come on home, Goodbye bluebird, Pamela Pamela) but none of them made the UK top ten although Pamela Pamela (written by Graham Gouldman, who eventually helped form 10cc) only just missed while Come on home also made the top twenty. You may recognize It was easier to hurt her - Dusty Springfield recorded it as It was easier to hurt him.

The Mindbenders (who included Eric Stewart, another founder member of 10cc) also had four hits of their own, but one of them was a major international hit. That hit (A groovy kind of love) was originally offered to Lesley Gore (famous for It's my party) but although Lesley was keen to record the song, her management blocked the plan, saying it didn't quite fit her image. So the Mindbenders were allowed to record the song, which made number two in the UK. Their three other UK hits included a cover of The letter (Box tops) as well as Ashes to ashes (a top twenty hit) and Can't live with you can't live without you.

This excellent compilation includes all the aforementioned hits plus six other great songs. If you enjoy British pop music of the mid-sixties, you might find this collection worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Well-stocked minus one.......2002-03-13

A well-stocked anthology of this 1960s UK band including their two mega-hit, "Groovy Kind of Love" & "Game of Love", along with some lesser UK and US singles. Curiously omitted, though, is the punchy "It's Getting Harder All the Time", the number the Mindbenders performed as the dance band in the film "To Sir with Love".

4 out of 5 stars A GROOVY GAME OF LOVE.......2000-11-19

Manchester, England is the home of, most notably, The Hollies, but also of Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders. Here is another good collection of singles from the original band and recordings made separately after Fontana split from the group. "The Game of Love" is one of the great beat classics, with its terrific drum & bass intro. "A Groovy Kind of Love" is still a knockout of a ballad, even though it typecast the band (to their dismay) in that direction. Fontana solo came up with interesting material on occasion, such as Graham Gouldman's "Pamela Pamela" (included here) and "The Impossible Years" (unfortunately left off this package, as well as others). However, a single CD "best of" is still inadequate, as the band's high-energy debut LP needs to be represented in its entirety on CD. Their 2nd (and last) LP together was mostly a listless affair, so that one is no great loss. But until we get a more thorough compilation (with some of the good B-sides as well, such as Fontana's "The Sun's So Hot Today"), this latest release will have to do.

3 out of 5 stars 2 "hard to find" pop gems--.......2007-05-06

We've all heard the terrific pop classics GAME OF LOVE and GROOVY KIND OF LOVE (which are included on this CD). However the real treasure on this CD are the two songs The Mindbenders performed in the film, "To Sir With Love" (OFF AND RUNNING; and IT'S GETTING HARDER ALL THE TIME).
2 POP GEMS!

4 out of 5 stars "The Game of love" is one of the best songs of all time........2004-10-03

This CD has even more groovy Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders songs. "Schoolgirl" is the best. If your going to get different Mindbenders CD make sure Schoolgirl is on it. Of course "Groovy kind of love" is on it. That song is pretty good. And the rest of the CD is just plain enjoyable music.

4 out of 5 stars Essential British Invasion classics.......2004-07-26

Although not as exhaustive as "The Best of Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders", this has their best known and most popular tracks. Aside from the classics "The Game of Love" (performed by WF and TMB) and "A Groovy Kind of Love" (performed by The Mindbenders after their split from WF), we also get 1 solo hit from WF ("Pamela, Pamela") and a number of singles that The Mindbenders recorded on their own.

Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders are best remembered for a handful of classic radio stables but more importantly they served as the launching board for 10cc ("I'm Not in Love", "Dreadlock Holiday", "The Things We Do For Love", "Good Morning Judge" and "Art for Art's Sake"). Eric Stewart became The Mindbenders lead vocalist and remained their guitarist when Fontana left(he also wrote a number of the band's songs either alone or in collaboration). After the departure of their bassist, noted songwriter Graham Gouldman ("Bus Stop", "For Your Love"). Stewart and Gouldman would form the nucleus of 10cc throughout it's career (the other two founding members of 10cc Kevin Godley and Lol Creme wrote "Pamela, Pamela" with Gouldman assisting although they didn't receive credit).

"The Best of" collection has more material but this is a pretty good place to start and covers the most important material the band recorded during their brief tenure in the 1960's.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wayne Fontana minus The Mindbenders.......2005-01-04

Although The Mindbenders scored the biggest post-breakup hit with "A Groovy Kind of Love", lead singer Wayne Fontana, judging from this superb 2 CD set, had the more interesting recording career. His solo album, which I had actually not heard prior to getting this release, is orchestrated pop, and a bigger jump in style than The Mindbenders could manage. Very nice stereo sound, too. The second disc compiles all of the solo singles, including the rare unreleased demo "Give Me Just A Little More Time", which to my ears, is a better listen than the Chairmen of The Board hit version. Many of the singles got lost in the late 60s shuffle, but are quite pleasant now. "Gina", in particular, has a wonderful orchestral backing, sounding like something from a film soundtrack. Perhaps that's where Fontana's music should have been directed, rather than the very competitive pop charts. Other tracks such as "Something Keeps Calling me Back" and "Waiting for a Break in The Clouds" have become Northern Soul classics in recent times. And his biggest solo hit "Pamela Pamela" is simply one of the best singles of the '60s, as written by Graham Gouldman. In short, any '60s music lover needs to investigate this compilation.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Long lost Wayne Fontana/Mindbenders albums now available.......2002-08-17

This CD release will be of interest to fans of British 60's beat
music. The first album contained here (released as 'The Game of Love' in the US), has long been out of print here in the States and never been reissued on CD. I have the original mono record, which I haven't listened to in years. Music Hounds' Rock Album Guide (1998) rates this album as 'worth searching for' and I agree. The versatility of Wayne's Fontana vocals is apparent, especially on 'Jaguar and Thunderbird' and 'Cops and Robbers'. It's easy to see why he left to pursue a solo career - he's an excellent vocalist. A lot of energy on this album - I highly recommend it.

Note: the U.S. release is nearly identical with the UK release,
but with 'Where Have You Been?' replaced by 'The Game of Love'
and Side Two of the UK release becoming Side One of the US
      release and vice versa.

The bonus track on this album, 'Um, Um, Um, Um, Um', is I think
a fine beat group cover of the classic Major Lance song.

The second album on this CD 'It's Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders' was never released here in the States, so it may
be of more interest to collectors. However, it's not as
energetic/good as their debut (maybe that's why it never came out
in the States!). Highlights include 'It's Just A Little Bit Too Late', 'I Remember Love' (written by Van McCoy), and the Mindbender's original 'Long Time Comin''. Two of the
Mindbenders contribute vocals, including Eric Stewart's vocal debut - 'I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man'. I prefer the Hollies'
version of 'Honey and Wine' ('Best of the Hollies EP's') over
      the one found here.

The bonus track on this album, 'The Game of Love' is of course,
the standout track (and a classic).

For those who like the Wayne Fontana greatest hits compilations,
you may want to give this one a try.
