On this 1976 classic, Billy Joel tempers his anger a bit, adding dashes of hope and even sentimentality. In fact, he seems to address this fresh outlook on the scathing "Angry Young Man" and defiant "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." Still, his ballads here mark some of his finest work, from the Ray Charles-influenced "New York State of Mind" to the introspective "Summer, Highland Falls" to the celebratory "I've Loved These Days." Lyrically, "Miami 2017" owes as much to folk as it does to rock. These eight songs seem as if they're therapeutic for Joel: they display a new comfort and satisfaction as he digs deeper within himself to find lyrical themes. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

An Album Of Many Themes.......2007-01-03
First, many of the songs have a travelling theme. Not only is New York City mentioned, but there's a song called "Summer, Highland Falls", which follows "Say Goodbye To Hollywood." "New York State Of Mind" refers to many parts of New York City, but also Miami Beach, Hollywood, and many other places too numerous to mention. "Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)" gives note to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, the Battery, Norfolk, Florida, and Mexico. That pretty much does it for the geographical theme.
Another theme on TURNSTILES, one which cuts even deeper, is balancing nostalgia with a need to move on. "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" and "I've Loved These Days", the latter of which contains such lines as "Let's drink a toast to how it's been" and "We'll have to change our dated ways" have inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty actresses as a discouragement from attending food-related reunions at my old school, because both songs, especially "I've Loved These Days", say that you can never truly go back to where you came from. "James" is about how Billy Joel and an old friend have gone their separate ways, whereas "Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)" talks about times in New York 41 years in the future, but the line "There are not many who remember/They say a handful still survive" reminds me of how, in my senior year of high school, many of my classmates were not doing so well, but I was in great shape to the point where I had a pass made at me by another girl even though I was already claimed. Both songs also inspired me to hang up celebrity photos to inspire me to skip my old school's Thanksgiving dinner because few, if any, of the people I knew are still there. So, basically half of the album has the theme that you can't keep living in the past.
Overall, Billy Joel made a grand statement on TURNSTILES, tying it with GLASS HOUSES for his best album ever.

On their 1998 debut, Turnstiles, it's quickly apparent that Minneapolis's Bellwether is mining the territory long staked out by the seminal alternative-country band Uncle Tupelo as well as the subsequent bands of Tupelo's frontmen Jay Farrar (Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). Son Volt, in particular, is recalled on the CD's opening tracks, "Way Back Round" and "Don't You Run," with their beautifully layered guitars and the world-weary, salt-of-the-earth vocals of singer-guitarist Eric Luoma. Likewise, the raspy vocals and manic country rock on "Stick Around" is a dead ringer for Jeff Tweedy and Uncle Tupelo circa 1990. Although it's no accident that Luoma and fellow singer-guitarist Jimmy Peterson sound a lot like Farrar and Tweedy, they come off as the genuine article. They play like they have a true feel and belief for the music they're creating instead of merely aping their alternative-country heroes. For this reason Bellwether hit their stride mid-record when they deviate from the No Depression formula and explore their own sound with stunningly crafted songs such as "The Longest Way," "Hollow," and "King of the Meantime." The hooks on these songs are sublime and slow to arrive, packing a powerful emotional punch and lending the songs a wide-open, heartland folk sense of longing, regret, and opportunities pissed away. Bellwether use their dual guitar attack to their advantage throughout the record, seamlessly layering electric and acoustic guitars, while the leads have just enough dirt on them to complement the bitter loneliness of the lyrics. --Paul DuceyAlbum Description

already a classic.......2007-04-19
It had been a while since I'd played it but to be fair I had already rated it as an alt country classic and purchased all the Bellwether albums I could lay my hands on. (I still need one)
This time around I was surprised and even ejected the CD thinking I had mistakenly thrown in an old Son Volt or Farmer Not So John album. Not to be. Tthe first song suddenly struck me as an absolute Alt Country classic and rapidly in my mind an all time classic opening track, and on it goes this album slowly over time insinuates itself into you. It is an absolute classic, no question. Its brilliance is in its understatedness and immediate familiarity. Its not until you realise how much you are enjoying it that it uncovers its true depths and beauty.
If you enjoy anything in the wide field of alt country, new country, no depression genre's, then search for this album because it is not mainstream. Buy it and enjoy some of the finest music made.
