What a Cool Deal.......2007-05-25

What an all-star line-up and probably a great deal of fun to do. Imitation, the sincerest form of flattery. I personally love it, to hear a different take on an album that I have owned 3 vinyl copies of plus cassette due to wearing them out from infinite plays.

Very cool.

Close But No Cigar.......2006-06-09

It is always tempting to return to an iconic artistic statement. This may be good in the case of Johnny Cash taking on the Eagles, Beatles, or Trent Reznor. Pink Floyd, however, didn't just write great songs. They also made an art out of recording and production. This means that to simply record a Pink Floyd tune misses the point. To approach this material requires a rethinking of the entire process--catch the Easy Star All-Stars and the brilliant "Dub Side of the Moon"--or lots of youthful energy and passion--try Les Claypool doing "Animals."

In the case of this album, neither innovation or passion saves the day. Each of the tracks is a more or less faithful re-creation of the original. The problems multiply as various and often famous musicians provide competent but often uninspired and even self-serving rehash.

First, The Good:
"Us and Them:" John Wetton provides a world-weary vocal, Scotty Page provides that breathy sax sound, and Pat Mastelotto nails the loping, understated, and almost awkward rhythms of Nick Mason. If your going to do a copy, this is the way you should do it. All the musicians seem more interested in furthering the process than in making themselves sound good.
"Brain Damage" and "Eclipse:" The famous ending tracks feel freshly painted and right on. Credit vocalists Colin Moulding and Billy Sherwood, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, keyboardist Geoff Downes, guitarist Robby Krieger, and the rest for a truly fabulous reading.

Next, The Indifferent:
"Money" has always been proof that the Pink could groove. Indeed, it wasn't until I listened to this remake that I realized how difficult Pink Floyd's particular groove was to achieve. Bill Bruford is a great drummer but he plays only his own groove and doesn't fit into the pocket of others. Tonly Levin, also a great player, doesn't lock down Water's bass part. Boring. "Any Colour You Like" is ruined by Steve Porcaro turning it into a jam band song. Pink Floyd was never a jam band, a fact that many subsequent bands have forgotten.

Finally, The Truly Terrible:
"Speak to Me" suffers from the disasterous choices of Jeff Baxter and Alan White. Guitarist Baxter's pedal steel solo meanders where it should sing. Listen to the brilliant Gilmour original. Drummer Alan White turns a minimalist, floating groove into an unpleasant shuffle.
"Time" makes the whole thing worse as Alan White turns the famous Nick Mason tom solo into an overplayed, poorly-timed, riff-fest. The rest of the song never settles down into anything that is easy to listen to. It's funny how the Pink were always accused of being unable to play their instruments.
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the worst mess of all. Rick Wakeman, one of my heros, turns in a solo that should have been left on the cutting floor. There is no logic, structure, reason, or investment in the track, sadly. C.C. White has a range I can't even imagine but she's just scatting along as if she's never heard the track. I have laid down plenty of tracks that sounded like these two and I would be embarrassed if any of them saw the light of day. Clare Torry's incredible vocal is missed here.

All in all: For musicians this is almost a necessary recording. It is important to know why things don't work. I have listened to this cd around 15 times since I bought it, trying to learn the lesson. The rest of you should just forget it. Try Les Claypool and The Easy Star All-Stars, instead.

The first questions you would ask would be, "Why do this?" and "Why attempt to add to perfection?" The answer is simple. Hard to rate. Some great, weird songs but weird compared to?.......2003-09-25

This is the first collection of music I didn't know how to describe because I haven't heard music like this before. Is this music good? Well, some songs ("Set Controls For Heart of The Sun") are awesome and capture the trippy, surreal qualities of PINK FLOYD at their finest. Others, well, not so good...
Unlike one reviewer, I am not dismissing this music just because it lacks familiar elements in rock music like the electric guitar, etc. Actually, I find the use of different instruments (or just strange use of keyboards) very refreshing. Songs like the strong opener are brilliantly executed and respectful of the original sound being mimicked. Where I had some trouble enjoying was when the song was completely unrecognizable from the original like "Another Brick in the Wall." Luckily, the rest are better.

Like PINK FLOYD, the singing is not the main emphasis. I found the fact that most of the songs were rather lengthy a bold and intriguing concept. I have to "tip my hat" to the artists for picking lesser-known songs and playing to such magnitude. The songs that stand out (besides "Set Controls" that I already stated is wonderful) are "Interstellar Overdrive," "Hey You," (best vocals), "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," "Lucifer Sam," "Let There Be More Light," and "Saucerful of Secrets" because there is a nice mixture of the old song structure and the newer method of music style. Worth noting is the humorous and clever "tribute" to "Several Species of Small Furry Animals." I was disappointed in "On The Run" (somehow, just not quite right) and "Echoes" because of the unsettling vocals upsetting the balance of the beautiful music (unlike "Set the Controls" which keeps the spiritual-like qualities throughout). Others are worth a listen. Not since the album "Sgt Pepper Knew My Father" have I heard as interesting a tribute to well known rock musicans and their songs.

Tributes aren't about recreation.......2003-07-29

I'm rambling, but I think you guys are missing the point. This is one of my favourite Cleopatra ribute albums because you don't have to hear Pink Floyd. If you're a Pink Floyd fan and know that no one can do it better, then don't bother. These bands add new life to very tired songs (admit it man!). For the person who thought Floyd was a "rock band" go back and listen to the mid-period releases from Meddle, More, Obscured, Atom Heart etc. that is the period that is covered mostly by this disc anyway. There are loads of soundscapes and electronic elements represented in those original albums. In these (mostly) ambiant covers those aspects are really brought out. The melodies are generally carried, or maybe just a keyboard flourish from the original. All of the songs are certainly reconizable to any Floyd fan (well maybe except the Gessin track which isn't a Floyd song at all). Those that do try to come closer to the originals, or those that venture into the later period of radio staples, don't work as well and are sure to annoy Floyd fans as well as casual listeners. "Set the Controls" should floor everyone though. That's a nifty version that beats out the original.

Truly a great tributary.......2003-02-10

Like any compilation album, you don't wind up liking every band/song. But the great thing about this tribute album is that there are enough artists with their own take on Floyd - some very original versions of Floyd songs that aren't on the radio. If you're a fan of the band's history (but not stuck in history), then you'll like this album.

An Insult to Pink Floyd is a more appropriate title!.......2003-01-30

Are you kidding me!! Pink Floyd are a rock band. Nowhere on this so called Tribute album (of bands and artists I have never even heard of) did I hear a guitar, or a drum only electronic noise. I don't know what kind of music you classify this as but it is [not good]....

As I listened to this CD I grew angrier and angrier desperately waiting for a song that sounded vaguely simular to a Pink Floyd song but it never happened.

There are much better tribute albums out there - try An Allstar lineup performing the songs of Pink Floyd it is miles better.

a floydian wedding.......2007-04-19

I was searching everywhere for a way to include Pink Floyd in my very traditional wedding. Instead of walking down the aisle to "Here Comes the Bride", I'm using this version of "Comfortably Numb". I love this CD, but should warn you not to expect the "mind trip" that was Pink Floyd. And yes I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. This is a CD you could put on at dinner at your grandmother's and have her think it is beautiful. Worth giving a chance.

Don't Expect Pink Floyd.......2006-02-08

I enjoy string quartets and looked forward to this. Whereas Mozart, Beethoven and other classical or romantic composers are the masters of quartets due to their counterpoint and fugue, Pink Floyd music does not translate into string quartets. There is no power here, no dynamics; all necessary to Pink Floyd music. I kept wanting some electrification! The piano is capable of power, but not allowed to sound off in this recording and only provides an accompaniment to the mellow strings. It was boring. Does not have the complexity of the masters to maintain interest. Go to the classics with all their structure to enjoy string quartets for listening pleasure. Or, this could be a nice change for background at a dinner or reception where it's not cool to blast the speakers with real Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but this is my favorite CD! The quality of the music is excellent. Even if you are not a Pink Floyd fan, this is still an excellent CD.

Just awful.......2005-06-15

I am an avid collector of all things Pink Floyd, including tribute albums. Of course none of them live up to the real thing, but this 'tribute' really does a terrible disservice to their music. For something of this ilk, go with either the Symphonic Pink Floyd "Us & Them" or the Royal Philharmonic Tribute. Only buy this one if you own EVERY other tribute CD ever made for Pink Floyd's music.

Excellent Album.......2006-10-11

This album is fantastic. It really gets to the heart of the essense of Pink Floyd. The music is moving and truly inspiring! I highly recommend it.

Nice, but a little tinny........2006-10-10

Very nice piano compositions of great Floyd songs. Pretty much no frills or improvs. Sound quality could be better. I think it has a little hiss and sounds a little tinny too, but I tend to listen to music critically. Worth getting for background reading music or relaxing if can get for a good price.

Enjoyable, Unusual, and Intriguing.......2006-08-23

I enjoy this disc quite a bit. Floyd fans looking for Syd Barrett between the strings might not love it, but tribute albums rarely satisfy the hardest of the hard-core anyway. This doesn't strike me as something intended to be intensely challenging, or as the foundation for wildly improvisational riffs on Floyd classics. Instead, it's a great Sunday-morning background disc, or something to put into the mix that will have your friends stop and say, "what the heck is that?" and then be delighted when they get it. I think it's cool stuff that's well worth a listen.

Oh by the way, which one's Plink? .......2006-06-07

Well, this is pretty bad whether viewed as a novelty, as a tribute, or as something of interest to a Pink Floyd fanatic. The concept of new-wave piano takes on PF sounds like a minor hoot, but these takes are presented without any real imagination, creativity, or flair. Even by the pale standards of solo piano discs, this is bland stuff: in fact it often sounds like MIDI arrangements done from sheet music. You'd THINK a piano version of "Have a Cigar" would at least be interesting, and maybe it is for the first minute or so, but there is nothing here that warrants a second listen.

I suppose if you are really in the market for Muzak-style background music you could do worse, but please, Grandma, DON'T buy this for your Floyd-fan grandson.

Easy Listening.......2005-05-27

The Piano Tribute to Pink Floyd contains twelve solo piano pieces performed by David Ari Leon. Most songs are simple interpretations that follow the vocal melody without fancy improvisations. The disc has a good selection of Pink Floyd songs despite an original composition added as the final song. Works well as a relaxing background instrumental CD.

One of many packages of this Tribute CD, good quality tribute........2007-01-04

First off, I believe the photo is incorrect for this version of this compilation. This is listed as the eleve track cd, and the picture shows ten tracks, oops. This is a low enough price, go ahead, splurg, get this cd. This is one of many multiple re-packages of it, but there are two versions of this that have ten tracks, missing the us and them track. This one is the version to pick up, and again, it's cheap, and talented well known artists takes on classic songs. Can't go wrong. Looking at the line up of players, you know it pretty good. For a different take, check this out.

An Awesome Tribute by An Ecclectic Group of Performers.......2006-02-21

This was one of those rare finds where you don't expect much, but then are slammed right between the eyes with greatness. 10 great covers all with varying degrees of uniqueness. "Money" is done straight with Tommy Shaw (Styx) and Ritchie Kotzen (Poison). "Run Like Hell" could be my favorite remake here featuring Jason Scheff (Chicago) on lead vocal and Dweezil Zappa on lead guitar. Scheff nails the frantic Waters vocal gymnastics and ends up sounding smoother and more audible. "Young Lust" is done with Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) on vocals and Elliot Easton (The Cars) on lead guitar. Again, well executed, dramatic and interesting. "Welcome To The Machine" features King's X vocalist Doug Pinnick who gives good drama and feeling as well as King's X keyboard wizard Derek Sherinian. "Brick" is done with Fee Waybill (Tubes) doing a scowling Roger Waters imitation with Billy Sherman on guitar. Not bad at all."Any Colour" from "Dark Side" is performed with a bit more prog than the original. "Have A Cigar" combines Bobby Kimball's (Toto) high pitched lead vocal with Bruce Kulick's (Kiss) metal bending guitar leads. "Comfortably Numb" may be the most Floydish of all the covers in that it features a vocal duet between Billy Sheridan and Chris Squire of Yes and drums from Alan White of Yes as well. The sound is as mystical and eerie as the original. Squire who doesn't often sing in Yes is a perfect foil to Sheridan in this superb take on a tune that's hard to cover. "Diamond" gives Steve Lukather (Toto) a workout on both vocal and guitar and taps X memebers of Thin Lizzy and The Frank Zappa Band as bandmates. The result is a dazzling guitar driven cover. "Breathe" ends the collection with Jeff Baxter (Doobie Brothers) injecting a late night style lap steel guitar into the fray with a great vocal by Robin McAuley and bass from Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osborne Band) and drums from Eric Singer (Kiss).

This album is a great tribute to a band that deserves to be lauded. These musicians are all excellent, dynamic and are well chosen for the songs they represent. This is not the easiest collection to find, but it's worth every penny of the asking price.

On the Dark Side.......2007-02-12

I bought this "tribute" with great expectations, but ended up quite disappointed. The violin sounds after a while gets too domineering, monotonous and has the effect jarring my nerves. I've never been a great fan of "tributes", this production makes me even more skeptical.

Too close to rock, too far from classic.......2006-02-01

My most dear album is Dark side of the moon, I'm a hardcore fan of this album, I have purchase almost every tribute there is, I always put myself in the intentions of the players involved in every proyect and I enjoyed every tribute album I have found in a fais measure.
But with this album I did'nt feel confortably, perhaps my expectations were others than what you get in this package. This is a rock album played by a string quartet (ok that's on the sleve so nobody's fooling you) and when I say a Rock Album I mean it, they tried to emule every single sound in the album with their string instruments, so you get a string quartet emulation of the album including the noises, perhaps what I'm trying to say looks great to you but it didn't sound great for me, contrary to that it sound very bizarre in many cases or scary in others not that romantic o soft as the colors in the sleve may suggest.
I think a tribute album is a very hard project, you do it too faithful and you end with a cover album, you do it too different and you possibly lost the great of the album.
In this case I think the players made a String Quartet Cover Album. If you are thinking you're going to get a softer or more romantic versión of the album or you are more into the classic music, forget it, this album is definitively not for you
Try the Dark Side of the Moon a Capella and you will enjoy it more than this, or the dub side of the moon tribute by Easy star if you are more into reggae, or the Out of Phase tribute to Dark side of the moon if you are more into Electronic, or the moon revisited or... This one was the less enjoyable tribute to dark side of the moon I have heard.
Anyway Roger Waters enjoy it a lot, ask for snip or samples of the album and try it by yourself, but consider yourself aware...

HOLY S**IT!!! Are you serious? I am an absolute fan of Floyd and Electronic/Techno music(how that happens, I don't know) but this is a tragic mistake that know realignment of the stars could ever correct. I am in no way taking from each of these contributers "talent", but come on! DID YOU EVER LISTEN TO THE ORIGINALS! I'll give credit to Hande Frei and Learning to Fly. It's different enough to be considered original for a tribute, but the others are absolute poop(keeping to the review guidlines...) Can you wash your eyers to get that sound out somehow? eechh...

You just have to laugh...it's that bad! If you are a fan - you will be pained by the massacre of great songs that takes place here. If you are new to Floyd... start with 'dark side of the moon'or 'wish you were here'....I beg you!

PF for dancing............2005-09-20

Very good electronic version of very good PF tunes set to dance tempos. Different twist but relatively good listening. Don't expect typical PF presentations. Different is good as no one will do it exactly the same.. thank God.

It's a bunch of Pink Floyd songs done techno style. I'll admit I don't know a lot about Pink Floyd. I wasn't alive when Pink Floyd was cool/popular/stylish/whatever. But as a musician and lover of music, I can tell they were doing something special; hence, I started looking for cover CDs (the remastered versions sound just too old for me to enjoy). I also happen to like techno pretty well.

So, like just about any cover album, this has a lot of hits and misses. It's amazing how some artists can make a good melody sound like garbage. Also, some Pink Floyd songs just don't go well with a throbbing trance/house beat. They require something more abstract like jungle/drum and bass, breaks, or ambient.

Conversely, it's too bad Aphex Twin isn't a huge Pink Floyd fan.

The bottom line is this is an interesting album. Definitely not great, but worth four stars...3.5 if I could give it that many. Best for someone who's only heard Pink Floyds more popular tunes and enjoys electronica.

Well I don't know. I haven't really heard this, but what I heard from the samples didn't sound too bad. That's because these people are wrong. Pink Floyd and different styles like reggae can mix, but you don't necessarily want this album to prove it.
