3 out of 5 stars mixed feelings.......2007-01-28

i bought this cd an while ago and never wrote a review, but since i rely so heavily on these review, i figured i better give back. here goes.

some of this cd is phenominal, and some of it could be passed over. not that its not good, just not to my taste. i tend to gravitate more to the soft, drastic contrast between the bamboo flute and the koto, but more soothing sound. the only problem with this cd is that it goes from something like this to a drum routine, that while isnt bad, is so diffrent that is doesnt flow well. id rather use the drum tracks as one cd, and the other music as another.

so in a way, if you have no real idea what types of japanese music you like but you are curious, this is a great cd because it gives a great variety and from this you can isolate sounds you like and shop more educated. in this way it does serve a great purpose, but only temporarily for me...once i found the tracks i liked, i added them to a playlist on my laptop and hardly use the disc anymore.

5 out of 5 stars The title of this album is absolutely correct: the BEST.......2004-05-09

I have some strange affinity for all things Japanese (this has been so since I was a little kid.) And that goes for Japanese music. I love the wild sound of the shakuhachi flute--which sounds like a bird soaring to me. And the sound of the koto is like rain dropping on garden leaves. This album has a fine selection of music ranging from koto and shakuhachi to the syncopated, Polynesian sound of taiko drumming (always a delight.)

My favorites are the Yamato Ensemble's opening koto and shakuhachi "Yamaji" and "Hoshun" (Springtime) and the taiko piece "Gaku" --"Let's Have Fun!" of Wadaiko Matsuriza. But it's hard to choose--as the entire album is truly the best. If you like Japanese music, or want to learn to like it, you cannot go wrong with this delightful sampler. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Driving the Beat.......2007-05-12

Kodo's performance on this album is not up to their usual high standards. While the Celtic influences are still there, the driving, pounding emotion which is usually found in Kodo's music is lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant mix by a wonderful group.......2002-03-20

This is a great mix of Kodo's music. It's almost tough to appreciate how good they are if you've never seen them live. Thes are a band of dedicated athlete / musicians who's performances are spectacular to watch and listen to.

This album is a good collection of their stuff form some of their other albums. I particularly enjoy the last track "Niji no Nagori" which includes haunting vocals and tremendous dynamic and rhythmic range.

If you are a Kodo fan , you will love this album. If you're new to Kodo, this is a good album to get a sense of their range.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal percussion album.......2001-03-04

This CD contains a good mix of stuff, both traditional & untraditional/experimental/fusion stuff. "Shake-Itsukamata" will have you up & dancing within about 2.4 seconds (if it takes that long.) It is propulsing & driving and everything fast, loud and rowdy one would want from a percussion ensemble. The cymbals are awesome.

"Ucho No Uta" is one of the newer style pieces. It has some atmospheric keyboard stuff on it. Although it is the worst track on the album it still isn't bad, it would be good morning exercise music I suppose.

"Kirna's Theme" is a short flute piece and a suprise inclusion considering there is NO percussion on it. It is very pretty though.

"Aoki Kazi" is quite stirring, it includes some string instruments as well as flute & drums. Very moving piece, it reminds of something that might have been on the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" soundtrack. (I'm not saying that Chinese & Japanese music sound alike, but there is a similar synthesis of percussion with western sounding forms.) It is a definate highlight.

"Nanafushi" has an irresistable groove, the main drums are similar to western snare drums and have almost a marching band feel to them (Japanese style marching band of course.) To make an interesting comparison is "Nanafushi" next to "Strobe's Nanafushi." This is from the famous Kodo: Remix cd. You could easily hear this song in a loud nightclub in Tokyo, New York or London. Fun & driving...and completely untraditional.

"Bird Island" is a frentic piece with flutes & drums. One can just imagine themselves surrounded by birds that are singing their hearts out. This one is very cool.

The disc closes with "Niji No Nagori" which is one of the strongest tracks on the CD. It is a slow piece that incorporates not only drum & flute, but also various percussion devices, handclapping & voice (which is a very nice touch.) Eventhough there is some fast drumming in it, the slow flute part makes it seem like a slow groove. THe voice is amazing. It is the perfect closer for the disc.

This would be a perfect intro to the world of KODO, or all of taiko style drumming for that matter.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2006-08-30

It's a shame that I am only now discovering the amazing band that is the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Anyone slightly interested in ska music will love the sick horn licks and tight changes on this album. The lead singer's nearly incomprehendible rants only add to the charm. The album delivers high energy music with amazing arrangements and exciting tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, affordable Skapara!.......2006-03-10

I love all of Tokyo Ska paradise Orchestra...that is, all except the price of acquiring their music as imports. This is a set of some of their more outstanding pieces, from the energetic A Quick Drunkard to the soulful Lovers' Walk, and the music videos on the disk are a great bonus. In fewer words: pure fun for cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Not a musicologist.......2007-02-02

I'm not a musicologist, but like someone who visits an art museum, I know what I like. I was fascinated by the percussionists on the Mitsubishi commercials, and I called Mitsubishi to find out who they are. The company got so many phone calls, the switchboard people had the info on hand.

There's something about percussion that is both primitive and soulful. Sometimes, nothing else will satisfy. I recommend this CD, which is both primitive and modern, making the old sound new and the new sound like it is infused with history.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Kodo CD.......2007-01-04

The music was great and just what I expected. There hasn't been a problem the CD.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Recording.......2002-09-13

The other review is correct about the dynamic range, but the actual problems go beyond that. The transfer is not smooth sounding. I think the recording perspective is often too distant and there is very little low frequency extension, and both of these factors make me reluctant to turn the volume up. Unfortunately, unless you want to gain ride, you must do this in order to hear the quiet parts. It is as though the recording engineer was just learning, or doesn't know any better. And let's not get into typical mastering and production problems. * I see the New York and New Jersey Taiko groups live once in awhile, and that's the way to do this genre, I think, even to a greater extent than with other kinds of music. Of course, Kodo's music and performance is far more advanced than Soh Daiko's...maybe Kodo's other recordings are better.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album.......2002-03-15

Kodo is simply the best at what they do. That's to say, Taiko with the emphasis on the music (especially drumming) and less on the festival aspect. It's true that the CD has a tremendous dynamic range, and that if you don't enjoy loud parts you'll be playing with the volume. This would be true if you bought a copy of Beethoven's Ninth, as well. Not all music is supposed to be the same volume all the time. In fact on this CD a number of tracks depend on them changing the volume of the drumbs by huge amounts.

I've also heard this CD with and without a subwoofer and although the music is interesting either way, you won't get the full effect if you can't feel the music. I've seen them in person, however, and I can verify that parts are very quiet, and parts will knock your socks off!

Album Description

To this date, Sukiyaki remains the biggest international hit by a Japanese popular singer. It is the only song by a Japanese artist to reach number 1 in the UK by Jimmy Jones in 1960. One of the highlights has to be Sakamotosan's Japanese recording of 'If You're Happy And You Know It' which offers tow and a half minutes of pure kitsch, and an improvement on the original! 20 tracks. EMI. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have for a singer who is a legend .......2007-01-03

This CD give some of Mr Sakamoto's best songs. For those who love 50's and 60's music I would recommend this CD. Of course it's better if you understand Japanese, but not necessary.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of a Japanese Legend........2006-07-01

An outstanding collection of the man that brought us Sukiyaki, one of the top songs of the 60's.

3 out of 5 stars Question.......2005-12-23

I don't know if we're supposed to do this, but I have questions. I'm more interested in the styles of the songs. How do the rest compare to "Sukiyaki"? Are they mostly easy listening, pretty ballads? Rock and roll? A combination? Since he had only one international hit, they can't all be as good, but his voice was so strong, and the accompaniment so up-beat and fun on "Sukiyaki," I wonder if I could fall in love with some of his others, whether they be stereo or mono. I gave it three stars because I couldn't give it five or one, without hearing it! I found a darling photo on the web (Japanorama) of him with his wife and children. What a tragedy, his plane crash! Put his grandchildren through college and buy the CD! : )

1 out of 5 stars CAVEAT EMPTOR! BUYERS BEWARE! .......2005-10-04

The release of this CD appears to be an opportunity for cashing in on the unique and lasting popularity of Kyu's huge UK & US hit "Sukiyaki". His memory and talent do not deserve such an obvious rush to cash in on his lasting popularity. British mobile phone customers can download his hit to their phones, thus this rush out the door of this poor compilation of his long and popular work. Thirteen of the twenty songs on this compilation are in MONO! Though there are a few gems on this CD (albeit in MONO), if you're only looking for a good quality "stereo" rendition of "Sukiyaki", I suggest "Hard to Find 45's on CD, Vol. 7: 60's Classics". The producers of this series have done their homework and deliver exceptional quality recordings. EMI Music is a Capitol Music label and should have taken their time to produce a higher quality product. BEWARE!

1 out of 5 stars Beware copy protection.......2007-04-30

Beware this CD it comes with copy protection software that doesn't uninstall. It replaces 4 system DLL's with it's own. Also you can't rip this CD you can only use the supplied music player.

I recommend staying a country mile away from this CD.

5 out of 5 stars If were specifically looking for the CD and songs included.......2006-08-20

The CD was great! It was what I was looking for and more. The only draw back during the process, was that they sent me the wrong CD at first. I immediately sent in back and they sent me the correct CD. I can't wait to share the CD with my friends overseas, they'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!.......2006-07-17

I liked this one alot better than the first one because I like the tv sized versons and the full versons on this cd. On the first volume the songs did'nt even sound like the same song that I heard at the end of the episodes, however it is a little annoying that that a few of the songs pop up about three times. But if you loved the inuyasha music at the end of the episodes than you'll definetly enjoy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Recommeded.......2006-07-14

First of all I know that this is a lot of money for a CD, but it is worth it. Moreover, there are sellers on ebay and other websites offering this CD for less - I wouldn't trust them. From first hand experience there are some really good bootleg copies, but they don't play the same. I got this CD for less on overstock dot com try them if you want a discount.

That said, this CD does have nearly all of the songs on the first soundtrack, but they are TV sized or the length that is ran during the opening/ending credits. There are six new songs that are full length on the CD. One is really interesting since I haven't heard it on the show (Adult Swim rarely plays the openings) and it has a salsa flare that is really good (04 ANGELUS). Plus you get a bouns instrumental that is simple wonderful.

If you are a fan of the show I'd say go of it you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Inuyasha Soundtrack.......2006-06-19

This is the second "Best of Inuyasha" CD, being the second it doesn't have as many new songs on it. I recommend buying the first Best of Inuyasha CD first because... well, because it was made first.

If you bought the first album, you would probably like the second one to complete your set. But completing the set of Inuyasha CDs is not the only reason to buy this CD, because even though it only has 6 new songs, those 6 songs are fully worth the amount you pay for this CD.

If you watch the series, all the opening and closing credit songs from "Come" to the end of the series are on this CD. All ones before "Come" are on the first "Best of Inuyasha" CD. This CD also contains the TV sized verions of all of the Inuyasha opening and ending songs, including those from the first CD, but the TV sized versions are only 90 seconds and do not pack the punch of the full versions that are all in the 4-5 minute range.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes the songs on the series, and if you haven't seen the series before and have the money to spend, you should buy it and see how you like it, because it is a very great CD.

4 out of 5 stars A great disc, but not his best.......2006-04-18

This is a great disc, though I would recommend his 2-disc Creamfields mix over this. As expected, the Creamfields mix has a much nicer flow to it since it was put together by Ferry himself.

It is worth buying this to hear his stuff you may not have had a chance to since so much of his earlier work is out of print --a real shame! (Why those labels don't re-issue the discs is beyond me.) One word of caution: this disc seems to have been bid up a lot by the sellers here. This disc, which I happened to not order from amazon, I got from my local record store at a cost of $15.99.

Ferry Corsten is one of the best Dj's in the world...period. No matter whether his tracks are chill or upbeat they will entertain you and keep you moving. What I hate about some "trance" fans is that they expect all the music from their artists to be ENTIRELY upbeat, and that would severely limit the artists creativity. That would be like asking Jordan to ONLY shoot his jumpshot, or for RODDICK to practice his serve and nothing else. A good artist will excel in various styles and will allow the listener to experience various emotions...this is what Corsten does! This is an amazing cd that I am sure you will enjoy. Ferry Corsten is my favorite DJ and he deserves all my praise for this album! Keep the trance scene alive!

    5 out of 5 stars A great compilation of hard-to-find songs.......2003-09-24

Being an import, this album was very hard to get. Basically, because of price. I managed to snag this at my local Virgin Megastore for only about $30.

Being one of the most exspensive albums I have ever bought next to ATB's import-only album, No Silence [2004] ($30 as well), this album is definitely worth the hefty price.

Ferry Corsten for me has been the master at classic trance, the trance that started the scene, and still keeps it going. This genre of trance sounds great no matter what year you are, and despite the advances and crossovers being done with trance, it remains still some of the best trance tracks. Some of these songs on this album are absolutely timeless.

Compiling tracks from all his names and collaborations: Gouryella (Tijs Verwest a.k.a. DJ Ti?sto & Ferry Corsten), System F, Moonman, Veracocha, Pulp Victim, and his own name Ferry Corsten. Also included is a re-mix of Roger Goode's In The Beginning Again.

Tracks such as Out of the Blue, which is one of the best and brilliant songs of trance, but also one of the bases for it as well, giving Corsten success and world-wide recognition and awards. Gouryella's single tracks of Tenshi, Walhalla, and Gouryella are also on the album. Other tracks are great listens as Ferry Corsten's Moonman, and other System F tracks.

Though these tracks are great songs by Ferry Corsten, there are other songs out there that should have been considered for the "best", and should have been included if not replaced some of these tracks. His re-mix on the album of William Orbit's album, Barber's Adagio for Strings, is one of the prime examples of Ferry Corsten's work.

For any listeners of Ferry Corsten or trance, this is one of the definitive albums to get. Hopefully there will be a second volume for Corsten's best work in time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Hard to Find Gems Packaged Nicely on One CD.......2003-07-23

Ferry's work is well-represented on this CD. I agree with the AYU track. It is pretty bad. Out of the Blue and the 2002 remake is sensational! The ultimate 5 pm drive home or out anthem! This is not to be underestimated. It is worth it!

    4 out of 5 stars I agree with Enlightened...well..........2002-05-15

but I wouldn't give it a 5 star. Don't get me wrong, Ferry Corsten ABSOLUTELY IS my favorite musician. Just that I wouldn't call this piece "Very Best"...

Like The Enlightened One said, some of the tracks should have been left out such as "Connected" and "Soul on Soul". Personally I do not like these 2 tracks. Especially "Connected", it's horrible.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION OF NORWEIGIAN WORK PLUS EXTRAS.......2004-03-26

One of the other titles I purchased while exploring Sissel's work. This Best Of represents many songs of her Norweigian repetoire. They have an Enya and folk feel and are pleasantly presented. Even if you don't know the language, they are a joy to listen to. Unique to this CD are the first two tracks, which were originally only on a CD single. Both feature panflutist, Georghe Zamfir, and similar to his previous work with the great Nana Mouskouri on "The Lonely Shepherd", collaborating with Sissel creates magic on both tracks featured. There are a couple of English songs included from pre-US albums that are also excellent. Though the Japanese import is a bit pricey, it would be worth it for an overall taste, especially for the Sissel fan who wants to collect all her material.

5 out of 5 stars The Japanese are very lucky to have this CD........2001-06-26

For more than ten years Sissel has dazzled Norway with her crystal clear, angelic voice. As far as I know, the only other countries that release her music are England and Japan(meaning America only has the [pricey] imports). If you can't afford all of her albums, you might as well get this one. The list of tracks on Amazon here is a little confusing, as it lists the sixteen best hits of Sissel, but not the two bonus tracks this Japanese edition holds. The first two songs are "Summer Snow" and "Seven Angels". Two beautiful songs from a Japanese movie Sissel recently sang in. Both of these songs have soothing panpipe music, poetic lyrics, as well as Sissel's serenade(she does very well in the high notes). The other tracks come from her albums, many of the songs are religious related and/or traditional Norwegian songs. Most of the songs come from her album "Innerst I Sjelen"(Deep Within My Soul). It provides a good sample of her folk influence, but I wish it had more songs from her first three albums, all of which are very hard to get a hold of(I had to wait four weeks to get Sissel's first album through the internet). Before I made the mistake of saying no songs from "Glade Jul" were used, but actully, track 3 is from "Glade Jul", so my mistake! I still think more songs from her earlier albums should have veen used(where is her duet with Placido Domingo?). This album is still very lovely and enjoyable. It provides a good sample of singing in both Norwegian and English. One very enjoyable track is the remake of the Beatles' "Here, There, And Everywhere". I also liked the concert versions of "My Tribute" and "Amazing Grace". These songs are a very good example of her gospel style. I recommend though, giving "Prince Igor" a skip. Even though Sissel sang an opera piece with a very beautiful soprano, most of that song was Warren G's rap, not suitable for a folk/gospel/pop star. But then there is the very very haunting "An Raibh Tu Ag An Gcarraig?", a traditional Gaelic song that Sissel sang with the Chieftains on "Long Journey Home" soundtrack. This song is a must for Sissel fans. Of course there also is the hit single, "Fire In Your Heart", even though it doesn't include Placido Domingo. Well, if you just had to get one Sissel album or have never heard any of her music before, get this album. Sissel's voice, which has often been argued to be the most beautiful, perfect, and best voice in the whole world, will surely leave you breathless.
