Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.

As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.

Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!

5 out of 5 stars Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13

Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.

This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.

If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

Recorded in New Orleans a few months after Katrina devastated it, generators at the ready to supply electricity when the power failed, Powder Burns is former Afghan Whigs frontdude Greg Dulli's finest work in a decade. It's widely and wisely been hailed as the most solid Twilight Singers release to date, as it combines the sultry and hazy lounge air of the first three Singers records with the scorched earth intensity of the Whigs. Fancy guests abound--Ani DiFranco, Joseph Arthur, former A.W. bassist John Curley--but the focus rarely strays from Dulli's sex-soaked, melodramatic croon. "I Wish I Was" sounds like a great lost Chocolate Genius song until the bombastic chorus kicks in. There are dozens of elements here--super multi-tracked choruses, Beatles-referring hooks, ridonculously classic rock guitar solos, vaguely dance-y drum programming, rousing piano lines, etc.--that would sound poseur-y or played out most anywhere else. I wrote this review in May 2006 but I'm starting to lift reviews from my blog and post them on Amazon: The Twilight Singers' new record, "Powder Burns," is a revelation. Which is saying something for Greg Dulli, who is one of the most consistent songwriters in rock. The liner notes for this album, like the ones it follows, charts its recording locales with the phrase "shot on location" because Dulli's records feel cinematic...

Like an Altman film, instead of progressing, the album unravels, exploring themes of addiction, despondency, isolation, sexuality, self destruction, unhealthy codependency, and taking the dark corners of the id out for a good stretch regardless of the consequences.

In a genre which either ignores classic R&B, or injects it into the music as a hokey novelty, Dulli stands alone in his effortless, hybrid tour-de-force. It is an esthetic that owes as much to Marvin Gaye's vanguard musical and vocal arrangements from the latter years at Motown, when the album slows for quick breathers on "Candy Cane Crawl" and "Dead To Rights", as it does to the darkness of the very best Rolling Stones records. In a time of pretenders and transient flavors-of-the-month in so-called "alternative," independent music, Dulli is unique,...lasting. Ironically, this may be why a higher level of popularity and success will always elude him. The audience which will by a Twilight album but is unfamiliar with Dulli may struggle with a record which departs from the "alternative" genre's established, narrow parameters. Not very alternative, eh? But then, Gaye challenged his following with "I Want You" very much in the same way...and here I am in 2006 calling on him and it as an exemplar so...

Sounding more like Dulli's former band, the Afghan Whigs, than any of the past Twilight records, the album bristles with taut, grinding riffs which fill the background of each scene; they are a supporting cast for dark and aggressive vocals- especially on stand-outs "I'm Ready," "Bonnie Brae," and seemingly ever building "There's Been An Accident." Dulli's arrangement of "Accident" is brilliant, reaching a dramatic crescendo which captures maybe his most-passionate vocal performance ever.

And yet, I think Dulli is still developing,...improving. Why shouldn't I? Every album in his career is a testament to his progress toward a plateau of song writing in rock that many of his contemporaries will never see...they can't.

I enjoy this one a little more each time I listen to it. If you like rock music (alternative, punk) but have matured somewhat or if your just tired of the crap on the radio.. give this one a go. It is a little slow at times, but is well written and very good over all.

One of the premier songwriters who always delivers a tormented musical portrait is Greg Dulli, one-time leader of the criminally overlooked Afghan Whigs and current chief of The Twilight Singers.
It's a wry album title for someone who's long battled a nose candy addiction, but Greg Dulli never ceases to turn in a staggering performance on record. Even 2004's covers album She Loves You - in hindsight an obvious stopgap while Dulli attempted to break free of drug addiction and rediscover his lyrical fire - offered an amazing retelling of divergent tracks made famous by everyone from Billie Holliday to Bjork.
My Time Has Come is The Twilight Singers' take on Sympathy For The Devil, exhibiting the danger of The Rolling Stones of the late `60s. The song conjures visuals of Dulli walking hand in hand with the Prince Of Darkness as the songwriter documents his own demise.
Where once Dulli found himself backed by soul singers and crooning his way through albums, Powder Burns finds the frontman relying more heavily on his alternative tattered style of vocal delivery. Fellow gnarled drug survivor Mark Lanegan again pops up on a Twilight Singers release, albeit in sampled form on Candy Cane Crawl, while Dulli's interest in Beatles (having previously worked on the Fab Four biopic Backbeat and performing John Lennon's Real Love) also rears its head on Forty Dollars, where he reprises their early smash She Loves You.
Recorded in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dulli still proves to be a rogue wave in a sea of listless rock performers.

There are people out there listening to the radio. They want to be rescued. Long since tired of riding dirty on a honkytonk badonkadonk that makes one want to la-la, there are some that would argue that Y2K was really the day the music died. (If not even sooner, but those folks didn't like Nirvana, Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. Go figure.)

Well, anyone who's heard "Gentlemen" or "Congregation" or any other record by the Afghan Whigs should be yelling "Rescue me, Dulli!" And on "Powder Burns," Greg's delivered the goods.

Possibly the most soul-infused yet forward-thinking rock record since the Whigs' "Black Love," the new Twilight Singers record still shouldn't be construed as an Afghan Whigs album without the name. Despite Dulli wearing lead singer shoes, which definitely aids in stamping any project with a signature raspy-throated, tunelessly-endearing sound, the backing band and instrumentation are a far cry from the rabies-inflicted punk animal that was the Whigs. Sure, it's dirty, dirty, grungy blues-rock, but one might be surprised what creeps into a song here and there. "Bonnie Brae" is a melancholy headbanger that could almost be called blue-collar shoegaze. Piano and violin pepper tracks like "There's Been An Accident," while rushing, watery electronic influence is lovingly splashed here and there, most obviously on the intro piece "Toward the Waves"/"I'm Ready."

Of course to think ahead, people usually end up looking back to see how good music was made in the first place. Dulli liked smashing Beatles riffs around on his covers record so much that he's taken to purloining lyrics, too, reframing the timeless refrain of "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" with a derisive sneer and a cranky guitar din ("Forty Dollars").

Not every word on "Powder Burns" is an homage, however. Lyrically, Dulli has always struck me as a singing Charles Bukowski. Sometimes it's exactly who you need to hear from to fall asleep at night when you're too bleary-eyed to read.

Greg Dulli is the master of lustful, dreamy and dark rock and his new Twilight Singers endeavor, Powder Burns is a fervent roller-coaster ride. Opening with an industrial thrill, this collection of songs drips in an icy, cool and seductive vibe. Always keen on employing talented collaborators, Dulli includes exciting guest work from Joseph Arthur and Ani Difranco among others. Tinted with a graceful layer of hope and a great bit of that expected sophistication, Powder Burns smokes through haunting ballads and turbulent, bittersweet rock numbers with unshakable vigor.

The tiny, strange, and environmentally harsh Viking country of Iceland has produced some of the world's most original pop music of the past few decades, despite being inhabited by just 300,000 people. Fostered by a physical isolation from the world and temperatures that strongly encourage humans to stay inside, the nation has developed a music that tends just as much towards a light ethereality as it does jagged, experimental harshness. A great stage compilation. Singers, musicians, stage performance... all well done to represent the spirit of far, distant and chilly Iceland. Modern sound and contemporary artists singing their lungs while musicians harmoniously pulling strings and banging drums. I liked it. HOWEVER! IF YOU WERE EXPECTING A SOLO Sigur Ros album - it is not. That is a compilation of various artists and Sigur Ros are only presented in the first and last pieces.

This album is probably one of the most unique and excellent soundtracks/compilations I've ever heard. It's nice to get a mixture of lesser known Icelandic artists and well known Icelandic artists. Listening to this album makes you feel like you're getting into a one of a kind Icelandic experience. Definitely worth buying.

i wanted so badly to get to see the Screaming Masterpiece movie. and finally i did. the experience is amazing, mindblowing. just to get to see Bjork performing live pluto and all is full of love in her last 2003 world tour worth the movie ticket. everything else is a bonus track!!! and what a bonus!!!
from the start with sigur ros, then bang gang and múm... worldless... in between you discover little jewels like the amina girls and apparatt...so you leave the movie theater hoping to make your next holidays trip to iceland!. first step for most of us, poor humans, is get the ost!. you will love this songs, they are all great, original,emotional stuff. if you are about to discover what`s next after Bjork and Sigur ros, well, here`s the first step to heaven. enjoy!

This is an amazing compilation and well worth it. It will make you feel deeply and experience a high within yourself and open new closets within yourself. I didn't know what to expect of the artists I didn't know ---usually compilations scare me away even if they have some of my favorite artists on it----but I must say I like every single song (except for sugarcubes). It gives you an idea of Iceland and mixes the energy of the pieces- from high energy to low - in a way that works very well. This is a unqiue compilation- and one of the few that is worth interest in my opinion. Beautiful. And I'm at a loss for good words.

Joan Osborne's One of Us is billed as a career retrospective by one of the more impressive, if now largely forgotten soul/rock (and folk) stars of the `90s. Unfortunately, One of Us does not live up to expectations. Not quite as retrospective as advertised, this album is simply a repackaging of most of the tracks on 2002's How Sweet it Is, with a few seminal tracks (such as her explosive hit title song) thrown in where other songs are deleted. There is much, however, to appreciate and listen to with new ears. The 1995 title track remains thought-provoking and musically engaging, as does "Right Hand Man," Osborne's killer song of sexual afterglow with its provocative 'panties' line. And if she went out on a big limb in attempting to cover Aretha Franklin's "Think," she succeeds beautifully in recasting other soul classics. Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" becomes an even franker declaration of naked want. By bending the melody away from an upbeat cry of exuberant joy to a slower burn of redemptive gratitude (with accents of Eastern music, yet), she almost totally remakes the Marvin Gaye/James Taylor hit "How Sweet it Is."--Alanna Nash

I heard a great rendition of "I'll Be Around" while in an Eddie Bauer Outlet store in Phoenix. The clerks could not tell me who the artist was, so I e-mailed Eddie Bauer, they couldn't help either. SO, I search the net especially Amazon.com to see if I could hear a snippet. Wouldn't you know,it was Joan Osborne. I then looked at her video for "Love's in Need of Love." It was great!! I discocvered the "One of Us" CD and it had several songs I like including that cover of "I'll Be Around" and "One of US." Highly recommend for a mellow mood.

I bought this album under the mistaken impression that this was the long-awaited next album from joan Osborne, only to see that what I received was a repacked "How Sweet It Is" into a mock "new" album. Now that I have received it, Amazon posts the track listings, which would have clued me in that it was NOT the new album. Haven't decided whether to open it and keep it, give it away or send it back.

The track listing is still worthy of a four star review, but not a single track from her second album shows up, and there are some fatastic pieces on her first album that are not at all represented in the two selections that appear here.

Really, though, we didn't need this CD. We want the next album from Joan Osborne. It was supposed to be finished over a year ago. Where is it? The fans want new work? And what about the Dolly Parton tribute she recorded songs on? Why can't we find that on Amazon?

And the real "new" album is out, but only available at Barnes and Noble. Look for "Christmas Means Love" on the B&N website. I bet this is a political statement to not have the new album available on Amazon, and the above "greatest hits" is Amazon's response...pathetic...

if you are new to Joan Osborne but she is one artist that doesn't have an album full of "throwaway tracks", so you are better off just purchasing the 3 studio albums and, if you really want a bluesy treat, get the "Early "recordings" album. Son Of A Preacher Man has never been more intense! Joan is a diamond that sadly gets lost in the zirconia of the world. If you love Joss Stone, get Joan Osborne and see how soul music can really be done!

First of all, I'm completely biased in that Joan Osborne is my favorite singer, bar none. But this collection, ONE OF US, repackages almost all the tracks off her wonderful HOW SWEET IT IS CD and includes just a few older songs. So, be warned - you might be better off buying her full-length CDs as this one is hardly a proper compilation of her stellar work. Of course, if you have NO Joan music, this is a fine place to start, just not the best. She also has a new CD of brand new music coming soon that undoubtedly will be terrific.

My only caveat about this ONE OF US collection being that it's always possible this is a collection of acoustic versions or alternate takes or something, but I doubt it. I suspect it's a record company project and something Joan herself has little, if any, control over or participation in.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

With Power in the Blood, A3 may have finally gotten everything right. Their first album, as good as it was, came across as a bit of a novelty record (maybe the world just wasn't quite ready for a mix of country and techno music?). Their second album, La Peste, upped the production stakes a bit too much, to the sacrifice of their country soul. So it's reassuring that Power in the Blood takes the best bits of both previous releases, resulting in their best album yet. It's still as slickly produced as the best dance music (they are, after all, labelmates with Bjork), but they manage to infuse their electronics with genuine heart and soul--they may be the first dance act that would sound just as good unplugged. Best of all, they manage to combine guitars and drum machines with catchy anti-establishment songs while never fully lapsing into the dubious realm of Chumbawamba, which is why it's perfectly acceptable to dance along to the banjos and fiddle on standout track "Woody Guthrie", even if it does boast a chorus that says "Don't need no country / Don't fly no flag / Cut no slack for the Union Jack / Stars and Stripes have got me jetlagged". Granted, Power in the Blood is not a perfect album--it's too long and the lyrics get a bit preachy and heavy handed--but it is a good one. The lyric "Mommas don't let your babies grow up to be DJs" (on the superbly-titled "The Devil Went Down to Ibiza") is alone worth the price of admission. --Robert Burrow

A3 has done it again. Their first album, "Exile on Coldharbour Lane," was a western-gospel inspired acid house party album, a blossoming transufsion of sparkling wit and musical genius. Their second album, "La Peste," was a darker, earthier treatise on pain, regret, and hope. "Power in the Blood," their third album, mixes the country harmonics and electro-house frequencies of the one with the crooning prison-cell flavor of the other, making for a product that is soulfully liquid but buzzing with dance-floor energy.

As always, the lyrics are rather political (in some cases, their message is almost too weighty to take -- see "Lord Have Mercy"), but this rarely gets in the way of their remarkably unique sound. As before, they slide between beautiful extremes, offering up uncut house with "Strobe Life" and acoustic spiritualism with "Let The Caged Bird Sing." There is the wickedly funny ("Yellow Rose"), the playfully ironic ("R.E.H.A.B."), the incriminating ("Woody Guthrie"), and the delightfully dark ("Power In The Blood").

The blend is wickedly sharp as usual. Their mix of soothing prarie psalms with the sneering static of hard house is something I never get tired of, a combo that lights a fire behind and beneath each of the songs. A3 is still belting out the beats, and they're still doing it in a way you have very likely never heard of before.

If you're not listening to Alabama 3 (A3 in the U.S.) you are definitely missing out on some amazingly original and refreshing music. This is the best "NEW" stuff I've heard in maybe 10 years. Thank goodness for "The Sopranos" which turned me on to the band(theme song).

These guys don't even fit into a typical genre . . . we might need to invent one just for them. From the intense beats of the title track to the gospel beauty of REHAB, this album (and all of their albums) are filled with profound lyrics and a broad mixture of vocal and instrumental variety. One listen and you'll be ordering all of their albums.

So you like music, huh? You're picky too, eh? You say you like a little country, a dab of electronica, some crazy-cool techno, acid jazz, rock AND the blues!!!??? Well, why not listen to all of them at the same time? Alabama 3 can help you do just that, my little friend!! This disc has everything you'd ever want readily available to you, the demanding listener.

Power in the Blood is my least favorite album by this band. Having grown up in the south and in a gospel church most of my life, I loved the fusion of music styles on the first two albums. Power, is more of a pure house flavor, and Im not a big fan of house. Alas, I am an Alabama 3 fan and I have both the 1 CD England version and the US 'A3" 2CD album of Power, that has the 2ed CD Acoustic Power. It was worth it for these cool country flavored tunes from their albums.
Id do it again.

Power in the blood is a melting pot of the first two albums from Alabama 3 (A3 in America.) With the deep dark gritty blues from La Peste to the sweet upbeat country groove of Exile on Coldharbour lane. But with mixing the two it still falls slightly short of it's predecessors. I feel the flashy production took a bit away from the band being musicians. No harmonica and less acoustica shifts "Power" to a more Moby atmosphere. It's great album in itself but Exile and Le Peste really shows what this band can do. The album kicks off with a short little acoustic story that always makes me smile. Then rips into the album's title track with great lyrics but again turns me off a bit with the techno. The album's first single "Reachin" gives us the A3 we all know and love; smooth tranquility. Other tracks that stick out above the rest are Woody Guthrie, R.E.H.A.B. and Let the Caged Bird Sing which sound like sweet leftover Exile work and Load Have Mercy has a haunting Le Peste groove. New fans of A3; I'd pick up the albums in order to really appreciate a great band's original sound and progression.

Three decades-and-change since they disintegrated in a burst of self-abuse and self-fulfilling prophecy, the darlings of '70s proto-punk/glam stage a return to the recording studio that's as unlikely as it is good-natured. The Dolls have always been a triumph of attitude over art; ultimately little has changed here other than the bracing exuberance they bring with them this time 'round. Having recently taken an interest in the New York scene and the wonderful music that has fermented there over the past 30 years or so it was inevitable that I look closer at the "Dolls" I love every track on this cd and regard it a must have along with the 2 original Dolls albums. David Johansen is a great talent with his Dolls persona and the Buster Poindexter phase. Such depth of talent lasts and grows. This cd, 30 years after their first releases is missing 3 of the original band but is not diminished by that although it would be just wonderful to have had Johnny Thunders still with us. This oustanding piece of work is a credit to David and Syl who have created a wonderful work that stands out in these days of impoverished commercial with no roots.

We all know that Johansen and Sylvain are the only original Dolls on this project. That's OK since they were part of the NY Dolls creative core and most of David Johansen's best solo material was cowritten with Sylvain. I had high hopes, but the songs on this disc have the feel of something that was cobbled together in a studio under a time restraint rather than that of songs that came to the New Dolls in moments of inspiration. The Dolls trademard dueling left speaker/right speaker half-lead-half-rhythm guitars is sorely missed. David Jo's voice sounds kind of shot. I don't know. This sounds like OK rock and roll. There's just nothing really special about it. This is too bad because I really wanted to like this.

I will remember "the Dolls" for more than the debut in 1973 with songs like "personality crises" and the second album with songs like "stranded in the jungle".The album "one day it will please us to remember even this" is the best album yet, well produced and mixed by Jack Douglas." the Dolls"
has been better musicians over the years and is not so revolutionary now.Its a pop-party album with rock touch and some various ballads.The best tracks are punishing world, gotta get away from tommy, and running around which is miles better than the rolling stones has been recorded the last 10 years so i will always remember this record as the best new york dolls ever did?

Granted there are only 2 original members on this album, but it still rocks. The production is a little too slick for my taste, but the songs are phenomenal (with the exception of "Rainbow Store") and more than worth the money.

If you've bought this album, you either know the Dolls and their music, or you don't. But no matter which side of that tautology you fall on, you can't lose.

If you don't already know the Dolls, this is a collection of great rock songs, tightly written, well-produced, with smart and funny lyrics. Just listen to "Dance Like A Monkey," a hilarious shot at creationism with a thick, bouncy bass line. Or try "Gotta Get Away From Tommy," which combines piano work, a Ramones riff, and one of the funniest first verses I've ever heard. Possibly the best song on the album is "Dancing On the Lip Of A Volcano," a tremendous, building anthem. You might also recognize the voice of Michael Stipe on this song. Some other names on this album that might sound familiar: Sami Yaffa, Steve Conte, and Iggy Pop. So if you like what you hear here, find out just who the New York Dolls were and are by getting their first two albums.

The rest of you know the story. You know that David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are the only surviving members. The rest of the players on this album, regardless of how good they are, are more or less session members. The result is that the album sounds less like a New York Dolls album, and more like an album by a band that has been influenced by the Dolls. Anticipating this, Johansen, Sylvain, and company have crafted a work that celebrates the Dolls's music and legacy. Songs like "Maimed Happiness," "Fishnets & Cigarettes," and "Take A Good Look At My Good Looks" tell the story of where they've been and where they are. For further proof just look to the album's title.

Far from lacking in authenticity, this album proves the spirit of the Dolls is alive and well, even if most of the original members aren't.
