Album Description

Slightly Stoopid possesses a unique dynamic. They have the sort of musical kinship that is clearly the result of years spent growing up together in one of Southern California's premiere surf towns and the relentless pursuit of creating the quintessential soundtrack for the lifestyle that exists there. Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald are perfect musical counterparts, complementing each other in the realm of elctric and acoustic rock, reggae, dub, blues, hip-hop, punk and metal. Boasting dual front men, Slightly Stoopid yields a rare chemistry. Both are multi-instrumental, often switching effortlessly from bass to guitar in the middle of their shows, continuously balancing their vocal stylings and fresh harmonies and always converging into songs that are good enough to be respected by the very artists who inspire them.

4 out of 5 stars A good preview.......2006-08-01

These guys are amazing musicians; perfect together - a modern Simon and Garfunkel. This album is pretty good on it's own, basically the best modern rock out there, if you'll call it that. It's hard to call it anything because these guys are totally unique; it's a sound I've been lookin for but haven't found in other artists. Even better are there next two albums, and more diverse.

5 out of 5 stars BOMB!.......2006-03-10

If you like the guitar and some chill mellow music, you gotta have this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Slighly Stoopid.......2006-01-01

This album in my opinion is by far slightly stoopid's best. I don't really care for most of their other music just because they sound so "white". This is pure reggae.

5 out of 5 stars slightly stoopid acoustic rocks .......2005-09-12

this is the best cd i have heard in a long time if you like acoustic music with BADARSE guitar playing you will love this cd. these guys tear up the guitar with there funky basslines and pounding rythm

4 out of 5 stars Their best cd?.......2005-09-09

There are some gems of songs on the other cd's they have, but I don't care for a lot of their faster punk songs, and some of them are basically crap. This cd I listen to start to finish without skipping over songs. White boys talking with a Jamaican accent in between songs is rather silly, but they make up for it with songs like "Fireshot", "Sensi" and "Couldn't get High". "Wiseman" is also a great song.

Definitely worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Stylistics Always On Top.......2007-01-10

Being an avid Stylistics fan, and seeing them in concert, this cd is really a treasure. My only complaint is that this cd does not include "Hurry Up This Way Again", which previously had not been one of my favorites until I saw and heard it performed in Concert. The Sytlistics haven't lost a step or been out of key ever. And they keep doing it superbly. I highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars 60% of what must have been a great concert!.......2005-11-19

First, all the positives. The current lineup with mainstays Herb Murrell & Airrion Love, along with newer members Van Fields and Russell Thompkins Jr. replacement/soundalike Harold "Ebon" Brown do a great job of keeping the Stylistics going strong into the 21st century.

The group is in fine form throughout this 10 song live set. Every performance is good. Many, particularly "You Make Me Feel Brand New," "I'm Stone in Love With You," "Rockin' Roll Baby," and "Break Up to Make Up" are great. It's an unexpected treat to hear live versions of "You're a Big Girl Now" and "Heavy Fallin' Out."

There's no point in going into great detail about the songs. These are fine live versions of the hits you remember. I've found many of these budget cds to be a waste of money. This cd however is worth the price and more.

The only downside is that listening to this cd makes you long for an extended live cd on these guys. There's a recent Dramatics live cd for comparison where they cover pretty much every hit they ever had.

You'll love what's here, but what's here will make you long for more. If you put this with those 70's Soul Jam cd/dvds that came out a couple years back, you'll have the equivalent of a 'full' Stylistics concert because most of what you would miss here can be found there.

The strong performances for the ridiculously low price make this a FIVE STAR effort.

Highest Recommendation under that criteria.

It deserves Four Stars under any criteria.

And if anyone's out there with influence...give us a VOLUME 2 of Stylistics Live, please.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Upbeat Affair..Roots Rocking Indeed..........2006-08-08

OK..it is a good thing that this CD is re released,Aswad,UB40 and Steel Pulse were the leaders who defined the commercial UK bands.
Whereas Steel Pulse's strength lies in it's jamming ability, a band bolstered by their leader and front man David Hind's, whose feet long dread point upward as their political aspirations do, Aswad on the other hand like Pulse began in earnest as a Jazz fused reggae band but evolved more as sweet soul men masking behind sci-fi soundscapes, sweet Abba tunes later converted into hits, more lover's rock than strident militancy.
Aswad's introversion is more into love making than militancy, as a then functional trio they packed a unique rhythm with funky, sweet and lovely harmonies, great studio chicanery and overall stellar musicianship...
This live CD is a great upbeat affair, one of the best live reggae Cd's of any band capturing Aswad live at The Notting Hill Gate Carnival 1n 1983 when Aswad became a trio packing a strong punch behind main main Brinsley Forde, his co singer and drummer Drummie Zeb,and bassist Tony Robinson. The lineup here includes 2 lead guitarists, keyboards and that great traditional horn team of a sax, trumpet and trombone adding sway to the sensuous rhythms of Aswad.
The songs contained within were their staples of the time, with a 10 minute medley recorded well and mastered digitally...the cover artwork depicts the UK festival with it's political undertones and overt festivities..you can feel it all here..
Aswad's next studio album, Rebel Souls, their studio classic, will probably be reissued as well.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-06-23

This is hands-down the best live reggae album I have ever heard! The band is on fire, and the recording is raw but captures the moment perfectly. Absolutely an essential part of my collection and one of my all-time favorite records.

5 out of 5 stars Aswad/Awesome.......2004-02-18

The first time i ever heard this CD was in California, I was at a party and my friend had suggested Reggae music.I myself did not want to hear any Reggae music especially a band named Aswad and he told me how do you know if you don't like it if you haven't even heard it yet.Well to make a long story short he put the CD on and i was totally blown away.I had never heard Reggae music sound so perfect coming from his speakers.I knew right there and then.I was now an Aswad fan and i spent my entire next day searching for this disc.Believe you me,If you've never been to a reggae concert in your life.Buy this CD.take it home and crank it as loud as you can.Believe me it will be like if you were there live at the Notting Hill Gate Carnival 1983.Oh yea don't forget to buy a referee whistle to blow during the songs. As far as the songs on this CD.You wont be disapointed.Every song on this entire CD is awsome. (Roots Rocking) My favorite song.

5 out of 5 stars BEST ASWAD ALBUM.......2004-01-25

NOW IM NOT REALLY A BIG ASWAD FAN AT ALL,REALLY THE ONLY SONG THAT HAS EVER DONE IT FOR ME IS "YOUR RECIPE",BUT WITH THAT BEING SAID THIS IS GONNA BE OFF THE MARK.THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME IT TOTALLY CHANGED MY OPINION ON ASWAD.THE DUB ON AFRICAN CHILDREN IS TRULY AMAZING,ITS HARD TO FIND THAT GOOD OF LIVE DUB.ALL OF THE SONGS ARE BRILLIANT EXCEPT FOR THE "CARNIVAL"MEDLEY WHICH IS ULTRA CHEESY,BUT OTHER THAN THAT EVERY SONG IS AWESOME. MY FAVORITES OVERALL BEING "YOUR RECIPE"STILL BECAUSE THAT IS SONGWRITING AND PERFORMING AT ITS VERY BEST.CHECK IT OUT IF YOU FIND SOMEWHERE FOR 10 BUCKS OR SO.RAS JOSH

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Reggae.......2002-07-07

This CD is awesome, with good ol' reggae using lots of brass.
If you like Marley style you should get this one too.
The best part is when they go into those long interludes or middle sections with the brass, drums and bass just pounding music.

You feel like dancing in an almost hypnotic way. Great Album.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars 3 stars as a listening experience, 5 stars as a historical document.......2007-07-17

Given the crazy changes that this band went through in their early days, there is potential for all kinds of historically interesting material from them to come to light. For example, there's a video of a 1970 TV performance out there that I wouldn't mind getting my hands on; it features a transitional lineup that lasted about 2 months (and a singer who doesn't appear on any released tracks)! Well, this CD may be the next best thing. The first four tracks feature the original 1969-70 Renaissance lineup recorded live in 1970. (That lineup was Keith Relf - vocals/guitar, Jim McCarty - drums, Jane Relf - vocals, John Hawken - keyboards, Louis Cennamo - bass.) The remaining four tracks are odds and ends by the same people, from before, during and after their brief time as "Renaissance." Overall the recording quality leaves something to be desired, but it's acceptable considering these are 30-odd year old tapes never meant for release.

    LIVE TRACKS:
"Innocence" - From their self-titled debut album. Manages to omit one part (Jim's vocal cameo "If I could show you") while still being longer than the studio version.
"Wanderer" - Also from their self-titled debut album. Weakest of the live cuts; Jane sounds very shaky here.
"No Name Raga" (not "Rage" as it's usually written) - This is where it gets really interesting historically. This 14-minute piece has never been heard anywhere else; apparently it was dropped before the band even started their 2nd album, ILLUSION. And it's not bad musically -- it makes about as much (or little) sense musically as anything on the debut album. Jane sounds MUCH better here than on the previous track.
"Bullet" - A good, loose performance of another debut-album song. Unfortunately this has been very badly edited, for no apparent reason. The last part of the song (about 5 minutes, or more depending on how long the band kept going) has been chopped off and awkwardly replaced with the last two bars of "Kings & Queens". Why couldn't they have just given us both, complete songs? Tape damage, maybe?

    THE OTHER TRACKS:
"Try Believing" - A failed pop song, dating from Keith & Jim's post-Yardbird, pre-Renaissance days (1968) when they called themselves "Together". (This is actually the last track on the disc, but chronologically it belongs before the others.)
"Statues" - Along with "No Name Raga", one of the treasures of the disc. This is a complete (if fairly brief) studio track recorded at the ILLUSION sessions (1970) but never released. Very good vocals from Jane. Unfortunately, for some reason, this is presented in mono when it probably didn't have to be.
"I'd Love To Love You Till Tomorrow" - Features Keith & Jane from their post-Renaissance, pre-Illusion days (1975) when the reunited, original Renaissance was going to be called "Now" (the name "Renaissance", of course, having been taken over by Annie Haslam's band).
"Please Be Home" - Jane, Jim, John & Louis from after Keith's untimely death (1976), when they had decided to carry on as "Illusion" but hadn't yet recruited others to complete the band. Arguably the best track on the disc.

And there you have it! Any diehard Renaissance fan, particularly one with an interest in the early days, needs to have this!

5 out of 5 stars One Bad Mama Jama.......2003-05-20

In the reggae arena, women are often slept on, crept on and just downright wept on. The problem is there aren't too many sisters in the game that keep our attention span, especially if they aren't wining and shaking all but the kitchen sink to keep us noticing. In these days its only sex that sells and if you aren't selling as a female artist, then you might as well go to the back of the line. Sister Carol has been on the reggae scene for 20+ years and has been standing front and center. She has a slew of albums that get minimum critical priase, along side her male comrades, she has managed to produce more work than many of them. This album recorded in 1999 in North Carolina, proves that outside of the studio Sister Carol is at her musical peak. With her first hand knowledge of Kingston musical history, she is armed with the best material money can buy. The album blazes through many of her hits on past albums including Call Mi Sister Carol, Dem Cannot Stop Reggae, Original Wombman, and many other pro-female anthems that are bound to make you think and dance. Her intense flow and mezmerizing chatting keeps you transfixed to her prowess and intelligence. Something many female MCs could learn from the dubbed Mother Culture. This album, gives the listener a true griot from the streets of Kingston, and while she holds her womanhood in strong relation with Rastafari, Sister Carol keeps her hold on this album with sheer dexterity and truth. The album bounces the whole way through with solid backing that is hardcore roots reggae and pure enjoyment.
