This CD presents classic pop/rock from this all girl band while preserving the original SOUND as recorded by the original aritists. A must for the true audiophile looking for vinyl on CD effects.

The only Dixie Cups collection you will ever need to own.......2003-06-01

The Dixie Cups were a Sixties girl group from New Orleans made up of sisters Barbara Ann and Rose Lee Hawkins, and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. Actually, the trio started off as the Meltones and then Little Miss and the Muffets (winner: worst name for girl group ever) but in 1964 when they had their mega hit with "Chapel of Love" (written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector) they had settled on the Dixie Cups. That one song was enough to assure the group of musical immortality, but the Dixie Cups were more than one hit wonders putting out "People Say" (#12), "You Should Have Seen the Way He Looked at Me" (#39), "Iko Iko" (#20), and "Little Bell" (#51); the best of the non-hits is "Another Boy Like Mine," one of several Barry/Greenwich compositions in the collection. Unfortunately, after two years of success the group's record label went out of business and songs like "Girls Can Tell" and "Gee the Moon Is Shining Bright" failed to get them back on the charts. "The Very Best of the Dixie Cups: Chapel of Love" is the proverbial one album you will ever need for this group, especially since there is a very nice a cappella version of "Iko Iko" written by the girls and their producer Joe Craig Johnson, which reflects their New Orleans roots. The liner notes are excellent in recounting the group's history and only three of the 16 tracks are not in stereo, which is rather surprising. Everything you want to own by the Dixie Cups although the competing collection of "The Complete Red Bird Recordings" does offer up a couple of more tracks. You really cannot go wrong with either collection.

While not nearly as popular in its original release, their quirky "Iko Iko" has become nearly as well-known in subsequent years, challenging "Chapel..." in popularity. This set includes all their other charting singles - "People Say", "You Should Have Seen The Way He Looked At Me" and "Little Bell" - all Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich compositions. As well as the hits, there are several b-sides and other singles that didn't see the light of day. The disc finishes up with alternate versions of "People Say" and "Iko Iko". Some of the additional tracks are of a-side quality and could have been hits in their own right - "Girls Can Tell" and "I'm Gonna Get You Yet" for instance. Previous Red Bird collections have been mediocre soundwise and with Collectables spotty reputation in this regard, at first this piece may be viewed with some suspicion. Somewhat surprisingly, it turns out to be an excellently produced CD. Most of the tracks appear in stereo (4,10 and 12 being the exceptions), having been taken from recently uncovered multitrack masters. The sound rates up there with the recent high-quality Taragon and Varese Vintage Red Bird collections as opposed to the muddy mono of earlier Red Bird reissues. A two-page history of the group is included in the six-page flopover liner notes booklet. An excellent compilation of the music of this mid-60s forefront girl group.

BORING.......2006-02-15

I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.

Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14

The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.

Not for everyone.......2002-02-21

Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:

The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.

The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.

Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.

The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.

This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.

Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04

The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

Full Metal Jacket.......2000-05-16

Full metal jacket is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Although the language is too strong for many people (not for me), it definately puts the point across about the harsh life of Marines during training on the Island. The sniper scene is very well done as well. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is portrayed by an excellent actor who is able to scream obscenities at his troops without even cracking a smile, I would like to see the bloopers reel from Full Metal Jacket.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

I've had this collection for some time. There are a lot of the songs that I remember from my childhood. And many that I don't remember. But I love the entire collection. And if your into early girl groups this is a collection to add to your collection.

Golden Age Singing.......2001-02-21

In very good live-performance sound, this generous (74 minutes) selection of highlights boasts the finest Carmen cast and conductor I have ever heard in one production. Verrett's is the only performance not duplicated on a commercial set, and she is spectacular--as close to the perfect "Carmen voice" as any I have experienced. Te Kanawa's gorgeous sound is likewise unmatchable, even on her complete recording with the same conductor. Van Dam is perfection, and Domingo even better than one has come to expect. A word about the excerpts: they include all of the big "numbers," as well as enough ensemble work to allow one to fully appreciate the conducting of the great Sir Georg. Considering the modest cost, this disc is unbeatable.

Verrett is the best Carmen imaginable, Domingo the best Don José, Kiri the best Micaela and Solti it's a grand conductor. The ideal Carmen.
