Editorial Reviews
UK compilation for mainstays of the British Psychedelic scene. Disc one, recorded in 1998, was the first time that John Lees (guitars/vocals) & Stuart 'Wooly' Wolstenholme (keyboards/vocals) had worked together in twenty years. The album itself consists of half old BJH classic, re-jigged & re-recorded, & half new material, all sounding as fresh as psychedelic daisies. The second disc of this 2 CD compilation, recorded on the Revival tour in 1999 captures perfectly the spirit & ambience of an incredibly tight band who, since the late sixties, have been belting out perfectly formed psych-pop gems. Featuring extensive liner notes. 2002.

For this, her second solo album, Azam Ali, lead vocalist of Vas and Niyaz, takes her patented polycultural blend of ancient and contemporary influences even farther beyond the stratosphere. That she is now a veteran of numerous film scores, including Children of Dune, Earthsea, and Matrix Revolutions, perhaps explains her present more cinematic direction. Born in Iran, reared in India and the US, and gifted with a voice of improbable tonal breadth, flexibility, and beauty, she is backed by collaborators like Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Chris Venna (Nine Inch Nails), Turkish DJ/composer Mercan Dede, the Japanese ensemble Kodo, and Grateful Dead drummer/world percussion enthusiast Mickey Hart. One of the more interesting conundrums inherent in Ali's work is that no matter how much electronic technology she employs, her immersion in her heritage unfailingly comes across loud and clear. Whether she is singing in English, which predominates on these sessions, Farsi, or another language, a prayerful sensuality informs every note. It's as though a sexy Tanagra temple figurine or silk-clad court lady from an antique parchment were to suddenly turn her lovely head and step daintily into the modern world, unfurling precisely the kind of voice one expected but never could have imagined. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
"Elysium For The Brave", Azam's second solo album, signals a new turn in her musical evolution. The album, her most ambitious work to date, brings together musicians from varied musical backgrounds performing in diverse permutations. The result is a highly coherent body of work that seamlessly weaves together all of Azam's cultural and musical influences into a haunting tapestry of atmospheric rock, electronic, and global sounds. Singing predominantly in English for the first time, the songs are based on lyrics written by Azam herself and reveal a poetic lyricism heard only in glimpses in her previous work.Customer Reviews:
Mystical journey into the desert.......2007-06-07
The opening track,"Endless Reverie",evokes vast desert spaces. It seduces the listener into a spiritual journey. "Spring Arrives" is a musical oasis. "Abode" sounds ancient and modern at once,in which Azam Ali sings of longing for her homeland of Iran. "Forty One Ways" has an urgency driving it forward, with its haunting opening "forty one ways to die,one strong will to live. " "The Tryst" is at once spiritual and erotic; Azam Ali sings of her own sin&being unworthy to enter her lover's garden (which almost sounds like Christian rock-yet it's not)."I am a stranger in this world" is unearthly, expressing desire for union with the eternal.
Azam Ali's spirituality shines in her songs. She does not resort to hoary, sappy cliches. It's as if Teresa of Avila's "The Interior Castle" or John of the Cross' "Ascent of Mount Carmel" were given sonic life. Azam Ali has had an amazing career so far;she headed Vas,now she fronts Niyaz. The best is yet to come.
World music - folk rock from the middle east.......2007-05-12
Pure and captivating........2007-04-24
This time around, she is supported by King Crimson's Pat Mastelotto whose amazing percussion work on the opening song "Endless Reverie", blended with Ali's impossibly beautiful vocals, is like the perfect combination of tribal beats and electronics, something we've never heard from Ali before. Another Crimson member, Trey Gunn, also appears on the album, and even co-wrote the mood-intensive piece "The Tryst", employing minimal guitar effects that underlie Ali's vocal lament. Her velvet vocals convey sensuality and heartfelt emotion, and are carefully placed atop an ethereal guitar theme. It is amazing to hear Ali sing in English -- her older fans know how moving she can get when she sings in Persian and Indian, but to see that she is actually capable of applying her talents to more "straightforward" pieces is nothing short of astounding. Unlike her works with Vas and Niyaz, there are a few non-Eastern songs on this album, such as the album opener and this one, where you'll get lost in the beauty of forlornly ringing guitar notes and dark mysticism.
That said, while the titles are in English, not all of them are sung in this language. Ali still uses lots of Persian and Indian lyrics in her songs. Her artistic strength mostly lies in crafting unique Middle Eastern pieces highlighting her vocals and it is hard to capture the intensity without using the region's language and instruments (as on the Indian dirge "Abode"). Her voice is so vulnerable and beautiful I don't even know how to describe it. Having discovered her on Mercan Dede's Breath album where she does her unique Persian-styled vocal melodies mostly going for wordless harmonies, I felt compelled to seek everything she participated in and was absolutely thrilled she experiments with the same style on songs like "I Am a Stranger in This World", which she co-wrote with Loga Roman Torkian, her partner in Niyaz; and the mesmerizing "From Heaven to Dust", an atmospheric elegy drenched in western beats and Indian percussion. "In Other Worlds" is one of the darkest songs on the CD -- it contains strummed acoustic guitars that slowly disappear under a wall-of-sound keyboards that blanket everything but Ali's wonderful voice. Though there is a vague Persian sadness incorporated into the song, this is yet another attempt to branch out and explore new territories.
The production and sonic quality of the album are mindblowing. An incredible amount of nuance and coherent body of work serve to heighten the unmatched emotional power of Ali's voice and compositional skills to a higher level. She has now proved that she is so much more than just a singer with a great voice; her understanding of melody, rhythm, and vocal arrangement leaves me speechless. Check this disc out even if you're remotely interested in world music that is unafraid to infuse electronics and minimalism into its tapestry.
Wonderful.......2007-03-14
Mystic, Mesmerizing, and Beautiful.......2007-03-11
What makes "Elysium from the Brave" stand out from Azam Ali's previous work is that she sings 6 out of 9 tracks in English (the remaining three are in Farsi). The mystical lyricism, which was written by Azam Ali herself, is hauntingly beautiful and reminds us about our personal quests for Elysium. Some of the lyrics however, are difficult to make out, but this didn't bother me at all because it's not so much about digging up words, but LISTENING and EXPERIENCING the MUSIC. Those who are familiar with the band "Cocteau Twins" (one of my favorite bands) and the lead singer, Elizabeth Fraiser, shouldn't be bothered by not being able to hear the lyrics since the "Cocteau Twins" are known for their indecipherable lyrics.
Everyone wants to escape their sorrows and hardships, everyone wants to feel Loved, everyone wants to be happy; these universally shared human longings are what unite us as a species. Unlike the hoards of hip-hop and pop music out there that exploit our animalistic nature, Azam Ali's voice is cry for a return to the human spirit. It would not be inaccurate to say that many humans are out of touch with their spiritual nature, and I am not sure who the blame goes to, but I believe attracting the population through an appealing form of art, such as music, is a powerful way to help promote and encourage spirituality. "Elysium for the Brave" features powerful and thought-provoking lyrics voiced by a divinely gifted woman who sings over stimulating modern day beats and rhythms, which make this album a unique blend of the ancient and the new.
My favorite tracks are:
1. Endless Reverie, 3. In Other Worlds, 5. Forty One Ways, 7. From Heaven to Dust (a nice BASS track) 8. I am a Stranger in this World, 9. In This Divide (the instrumentation is amazing)

Steve's finest ironically not darkest hour.......2007-02-01
The BETTER, pre-70's, Steve Miller Band.......2007-01-04
This was the first Steve Miller Band album I ever heard (when it first came out, in 1968)and it's still my favorite. (Although I'm considering adding, "Young Hearts" to my collection; it seems like it might be a good "anthology" CD.)
After BNW, I didn't pick up any other SMB vinyl or tape, until the late seventies, and those recordings seemed a little more "Top 40/Pop" than his earlier material. (Although - in retrospect - I could even argue with myself about that.)
Speaking as a graphic designer, I think the album's jacket photos, design and layout, are some of the best of the period, and very stunning. (Hard to appreciate on a small, CD jewel box.)
Celebration!! Everybody Trip Out!!!.......2003-11-13
Perhaps Steve's Best!.......2003-09-26
Though the original vinyl has long since been lost, every time I have rebuilt my music collection as I raised a family, Brave New World was always the first album or CD I purchased.
There are only 9 songs on the album, but there are no fillers - this is all great stuff. I am not sure why it is, but the title track, Brave New World, has never made it into any of Steve's many, many "greatest hits" compilations even though it is one of his best works ever. Of course, 6 songs out of 9 on this album regularly show up in the compiliations: Celebration Song, Kow Kow Calculator, Seasons, Space Cowboy, LT`s Midnight Dream, and My Dark Hour. My Dark Hour, by the way, includes Paul McCartney on guitar as Paul Ramone.
So with 6 out of 9 songs considered to be among his greatest hits - and the other three songs are great music as well - this album belongs in every Steve Miller Band or other classic rock and roll collection, no matter how many versions of The Joker and Fly Like An Eagle you have in the compilations.
Updated: Just for the record, track 5 is not Kow Kow. It is Kow Kow Calculator. While the track was called Kow Kow on some of the compilations later on, the original name, as it was on the LP and still is shown on this CD, is Kow Kow Calculator.

The lush Moroccan Spirit emphasizes music's meditative qualities, but this imaginative mix of traditional and modern also works on a less contemplative level. The Brave--the guy behind Sacred Spirit, Indigo Spirit, and B-Tribe--traveled throughout Morocco over a five-year period with a microphone and a tape recorder, capturing the essence of both the Arab and Berber cultures. He then wove these disparate musical threads into a cohesive multicultural musical fabric using unobtrusive electronic beats and studio programming. There's even a bit of electronic groove on some of the more upbeat tracks. "Jim I Nim" and "La Mamounia" crackle with the vitality of traditional Moroccan dance music, but could easily work at hip world-music-friendly nightclubs. Mellow highlights include the somber "Music for 1001 Nights: Outro" and "Moroccan Soul," which is propelled by soulful women singers. The album's not as challenging as the more radical hybrids using North African music, but Moroccan Spirit is far more than mere background noise. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

"The Brave" is the producer of this beautiful arrangement. This artist was the creator of B-Tribe, a successful and enterprising new age octave in its own right. What this lone person do was spend 5 years traversing the length of Morocco from sea to desert and tape traditional songs and dances from the Teureqs, Moors, Arabs, Berbers and French descent people and like a multi-cast arranged a assortment of quality driven 12 tracks.
Many westerners have their doubts of middle eastern music, but Moroccan Spirit is a album that will dispell all your worries and prejudices. It is a pleasing, pleasant listen incorporating the classic sounds of modern instrumentals with age-old traditions of the small kingdom of Morocco. I am very pleased at purchasing this lovely CD.

Iron Maiden are nothing if not consistent. Since 1980's self-titled debut, they've been one of metal's preeminent torchbearers, spewing forth dramatic old-school, Euro-flavored arena-style metal, that to a non-fan might seem akin to Spinal Tap. The band's legion of followers, however, will rejoice at the 67 minutes of archetypal Maiden found on Brave New World. The album reunites their classic-period singer Bruce Dickinson with his longtime band following his self-imposed six-year absence. Also back on board is guitarist Adrian Smith, giving Maiden a scorching three-guitar lineup. Maiden's lyrical scope is as historic and elaborate as ever, their muscular musicality verging on the melodramatic. But that's what Maiden have always been about, and their sound is instantly recognizable on such meaty cuts as "The Mercenary," "The Fallen Angel," and "Ghost of the Navigator." Brave New World's signature time changes, guitar harmonies, and urgent vocals render moot any question as to whether it will spawn Maiden classics to rival the likes of "Run to the Hills" and "Number of the Beast." Bruce is back, and all's right on this Brave New World. --Katherine TurmanAlbum Description

7. The Fallen Angel: The worst song, but good anyway. 7/10
8. The Nomad: Legendary and underrated. 9/10

This is why Maiden are the Gods of metal.......2007-04-05
Maiden to this day are still coming out with new killer albums. they came out with two more since this one, Dance of Death in 2003, and a matter of life and death in 2006. I fell that this is the best of the three albums of the New Maiden line up. I wpuld recommend this album to new metal fans who are new to maiden, along with NOTB i feel this one is a great starter album.
Dickinson & Smith return to the fold, with mixed results.......2007-03-17
The album starts off strongly with the aforementioned "The Wicker Man" & "Ghost Of The Navigator." These songs have great guitar riffs & they flow nicely. The album goes downhill from here though. During the years that Blaze Bayley was their singer, Maiden got into the very bad habit of repeating chorus sections in some of their songs over & over & over again. Unfortunately, the band failed to break that habit here. The album's title track is a prime example of this. Another is "The Mercenary," which is a shame because the song has a great verse riff. Listening to Dickinson sing "Show them no fear, show them no fear" repeatedly just gets tiring.
"Blood Brother" is a ballad-like song that just doesn't work. There are two prog-ish sounding tracks here, "Dream Of Mirrors" & "The Nomad." "Dream Of Mirrors" is not very good & has an absolutely jarring intro. "The Nomad" is much better & is one of my favorite songs on the album. Another track that I like is "The Fallen Angel," which is a straight-forward riff-rocker. "Out Of The Silent Planet" is an okay song but nothing great. I guess you say the chorus is kind of catchy. Bruce Dickinson's vocal line in "The Thin Line Between Love & Hate" just sounds awkward. Definitely a song to skip over.
Kevin Shirley produced BRAVE NEW WORLD, & he did a fine job. The guitars come through crisply & clearly as does Steve Harris' bass guitar. Murray, Smith & Gers find room to take solos. Bruce Dickinson's voice sounds very strong. If you've read my reviews of some other Iron Maiden albums, you've probably noticed that I'm not a big fan of drummer Nicko McBrain. While I still believe that Maiden was a better band with Clive Burr on drums, McBrain does a good job on BRAVE NEW WORLD. Unfortunately, Iron Maiden didn't come up with enough good material to match the high production values.
Very Majestic And Inspiring!!!!!!.......2007-02-12

All The Houses Look The Same is art and pop; it is a scene of lullaby piano and melodic vocal lines painted against a background of indie rock. Deas Vail combines catchy choruses and ethereal guitars to produce a sound that equates to the marriage of Coldplay and Death Cab for Cutie. The instrumentation of this record is beautifully crafted so that it resonates deep within the listener.Customer Reviews:

While not exactly a return to form, the first studio record since 1983 by the classic Styx trio of Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and James Young will undoubtedly please hard-core fans. There's nothing here on the level of "Come Sail Away," "Miss America," or "Lady," but that trademark combination of thrilling, arty hard-rock sounds and gently swooping, full-blown ballads continues. Dennis DeYoung's crazily high-pitched voice still hovers admirably in the castrato range for the most part, though time has introduced a few rough edges. In grand art-rock tradition, the record's supposedly got something to do with futurist British scribe Aldous Huxley (one of classic rockers' favorites), but if anything will bother the listener, that's not it. Songs such as "Number One" reveal an attempt by the band to update their sound with newer variations on hard rock; the result is less than satisfying. When they stick to the old formula, as with "I Will Be Your Witness" and "While There's Still Time," it's like grunge never happened, which is what this nearly-30-year-old act are supposed to sound like. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
Great Songs.......2006-10-05
2. Brave New World. All around cool, although the Arch Allies version is preferred for me.
3. While There's Still Time. Sad, and beautiful. It made my friend cry
.
4. Number One. Another differant sound.
5. Best New Face. This one's "fun" to listen to.
6. What Have They Done To You. It's JY. That's basically it, there are better ones.
7. Fallen Angel. Interesting lyrics. I'm not too big on the music it self however.
8. Everything Is Cool. A good rocker. Kinda cheesy, but regardless, a cool song.
9. Great Expectations. Another differant feel. This time from Dennis.
10. Heavy Water. ROCKS!!! Funny lyrics, I love it.
11. High Crimes & Misdemeanors (Hip Hop-Cracy). This is an odd-ball. A lot of fans probably wouldn't like it.
12. Just Fell In. Another fun song by Tommy Shaw. Very upbeat.
13. Goodbye Roseland. This is pretty. However I got bored of it.
14. Brave New World (Reprise). This is basically a medley that sums up JY and Tommy's part in this CD.
Great Album.......2006-09-21
Anyway This is a very well done album and their first with new drummer Todd Sucherman. Every song is very well done but my favorites have to be "Fallen Angel", "Best New Face", "I Will Be Your Witness", "Everything Is Cool", and "Number One". I really like those songs a lot. I do wish that there could have been more like this because CYCLORAMA just didn't meet it's potential and Lawrence Gowan's only real good accomplishment has been "I Am The Walrus" even though he does do a good job on the classics considering all things. BRAVE NEW WORLD was another new direction Styx was taking and it was going good.
But anyway this is a great album for any die-hard Styx fan. If your just getting into Styx try PIECES OF EIGHT or THE GRAND ILLUSION but if you been into Styx for a while this is a good album to have.
Nothing new, but a refreshing break from the pop scene.......2006-07-20
Anyway, I was surprised to hear that they released a new record in 1999. Ironically enough, I bought an autographed copy of this CD at a concert of theirs at the South Dakota State Fair back in 2000. Regardless of what people say about them, Styx puts on one heck of a show. The only song they performed off this disc was "Everything Is Cool", which was their opener. The rest of their songs were their all-time classics that you can hear on their "Greatest Hits" package from 1995. Sadly, Dennis DeYoung was not part of the tour; he was kicked out before they went on the road. In fact, the only two "original" members were James Young and Tommy Shaw. That was slightly disappointing in the beginning. However, it quickly dissolved the more they played. Great sound!
Overall, this CD is pretty good for all intensive purposes. No groundbreaking tracks, and certainly nothing new. Then again, long-time Styx fans would expect nothing else. They mostly keep their traditional sound and song style, with some small experimentation in modernizing their stuff. My top tracks are "Brave New World", "Everything Is Cool", "Number One", and "Best New Face". It's not a CD to start with if your new to Styx, but it will be a nice addition to your collection if you've followed them over the years. It's too bad their 2003 follow up, "Cyclorama", was not near as good.
THE LAST REAL STYX ALBUM.......2006-06-05
when the core of the original band reunited.even more thrilled they were doing a new album. great songs not enough DENNIS
but well rounded songs good balance of rockers and ballads.WHILE THERES STILL TIME beautiful harmonies by SHAW/and DEYOUNG.true styx sound.TOMMYS songs are pretty good not his best.J.Y.sucks as always. He always was the weakest link of the band. it was always best when he just played guitar.BRAVE NEW WORLD is a really good song as well as EVERY THING IS COOL.GOOD BYE TO ROSELAND is the best song on the disc.Should have closed the album there but SHAW and J.Y. had to ruin it with that crappy reprise. Then the egotistically combination of TOMMY SHAW and JAMES YOUNG fired DENNIS and STYX was and still is finished how do you get rid of the man who made the band.BRAVE NEW WORLD indeed.
Brave New World ~ Styx.......2006-01-15
I will be your witness(8/10) - This is a good one, it has another sound then other Styx-songs, but I do like this.
(Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades)
Brave New World(10/10) - Very good song!
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)
While There's Still Time(9/10) - A very beautiful ballad. Dennis DeYoung sings so beautiful on this song.
(Dennis DeYoung)
Number One(8/10) - A good song, this is also a song that you don;t expect of Styx. But it sounds very good.
(Tommy Shaw)
Best New Face(8/10) - A nice swingin' song!
(Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades)
What Have They Done To You(8/10) - A good rocker.
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)
Fallen Angel(8/10) - A nice song, it has a very nice melody.
(Dennis DeYoung)
Everything is Cool(9/10) - A very good rocker with very stupid lyrics.
(Tommy Shaw)
Great Expectations(7/10) - A nice song with a catchy melody.
(Dennis DeYoung)
Heavy Water(8/10) - This is the heaviest song of this album. The stanza is peaceful, but the chorus is heavy.
(James Young/Tommy Shaw)
High Crimes Misdemeanors(4/10) - A funny song. I always skip this one.
(Dennis DeYoung)
Just Fell In(3/10) - This sucks even more the High Crimes Misdemeanors.
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)
Goodbye Roseland(10/10) - A great song to end the album! Why did they make an reprised version of Brave new world?
(Dennis DeYoung)
Brave New World reprise - They should not have putten this song on the album, cause Goodbye Roseland is a fantastic song to end the album.
So as you've read, most of the songs are good. The tracklist should have been:
1. I Will Be Your Witness
2. Brave New World
3. While There's Still Time
4. Number One
5. Best New Face
6. What Have They Done To You'
7. Fallen Angel
8. Everything Is Cool
9. Great Expectations
10. Heavy Water
11. Goodbye Roseland
If this was the tracklist, it would be a 5 star release!

Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26
1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.
3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.
4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.
6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.
8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.
10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).
11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...
19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.
22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.
23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.
25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.
26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.
27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.
Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!
