Solid hard rock album.......2006-07-18

Released in 1991, Stranded is the second (and final) album by hard rockers Tangier. Original vocalist Mike LeCompt is back on board for this album, which I tend to prefer over the band's debut Four Winds. You wouldn't know it by Tangier's bluesy, Southern-influenced rock & roll, but the band actually hails from New Jersey. Similar to bands like Baton Rouge and Tora Tora, Tangier has a bit more swagger than most hair metal bands from that era. It's nothing you haven't heard before, but if you're into late 80's to early 90's hard rock, chances are you'll enjoy this one.

This CD has been nominated for two Grammies in the 2004 Grammy Awards. This was a work of love, and I highly recommend this CD for its beautiful playing and production. A collection of many previous unrecorded nocturnes, it is great music for just relaxing.

A HARD ROCKIN' GEM.......2007-05-26

WHAT A GREAT ALBUM TO CLOSE OUT THE DECADE. THIS DEBUT ALBUM IS DYNAMITE! STAND OUT TRACKS INCLUDE "ON THE LINE" AND "SOUTHBOUND TRAIN". I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECORD TO ANY ROCK FAN.

Heavy Metal Gem Overlooked.......2005-12-29

Tangier's "Four Winds" was released in 1989. When you think of that year, you think of the radio-frenzy hair-bands like Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Poison, Bon Jovi, just to name a few. But your average heavy metal listener will not think of Tangier. This is a totally awesome album and not one bad song on this release. "Ripcord" is just the perfect opening track, especially the way the song begins in a unique sort of way with the bass for eight seconds and the whole song comes together afterwards. "Southbound Train" is a standout and should have gotten air play it deserved in the late 80's and early 90's. Other great tracks include "Mississippi" (a bluesy hard song), "Sweet Surrender" "Bad Girl" and Good Lovin'." The album track, "Four Winds" is probably Tangier's masterpiece. It starts out slow and bluesy for the first verse and the chorus. After the chorus, then the song picks up in a faster tempo. It's such a brilliant song. If you like the sounds of Metallica and Pantera, then you will like Tangier.

SOLID ALBUM.......2005-12-12

this was a very good album. their style can best be described as "Southern Hard Rock" . the sound is in the style of alot of the 70's bands like bad co. or skynrd. with a later 80's kick to it. its too bad this style didnt really jive with the Hair slease LA sound of the day and it got basically ingnored by the masses. If you like The 4 horsemen or Black Crowes, this album is perfect for you.

"Four winds" by Tangier is a great album, featuring melodic straight forward hard rock with no frills. The style can be described as a kind of a southern approach with good vocals from Bill Mattson, who sadly quit the band after this debut. Tangier brings on a musical feel connected to the 1970's hard rock scene, but since the record was released in 1989 I guess it got lost, competing with the whole hair metal scene. That's too bad because Tangier's "Four winds" is absolutely a better choice than any album by bands like Poison, Cinderella, Tesla etc.

I would say that all of the songs are very good indeed and this forgotten and overlooked album will certainly satisfy any rock fan of early Whitesnake, Bad Company and others in that genre. Maybe this is a 5 star effort, at least it is a very strong and powerful album featuring all the ingrediences we love about hard rock music. Highly recommanded!

The follow up album "Stranded" is not by far as good, and the band did the only decent thing - called it a day...

F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

A Fritz Kreisler recording can always be recognized by the violinist's beefy, baritonal sonority, inimitable portamento, and communicative warmth. Most of the repertoire here consists of the short, encore pieces that prevailed in the era of 78rpm records, many penned or arranged by Kreisler, who was always on the lookout for memorable tunes. Familiar classics like the duets with John McCormack, and Schubert, Beethoven, and Grieg sonata collaborations with Rachmaninoff turn up alongside rare alternate takes and Kreisler's lone recording as a piano soloist in Dvořak's Humoresque. One should savor these musical sweetmeats in small portions, rather than wolfing down each disc in chronological gulps. Ward Marston's transfers are beyond praise. -- Jed Distler

Kind of Amazing.......2005-12-08

First thing I be wondering is where RCA (BMG--now probably Wal-Mart) got the idea that a $120 set of Kreisler faves--most short 78-era items--would be marketable? I'd love to check the Homeland Security records and see just who bought this set. I would never have sprung for it but now that I was given one I have to comment on it. Amazing!

First, there's the playing. This is a professionally ebullient fiddler. Technically astounding, but with the communicative warmth the other reviewers seem to uniformly note. I find violin tiring to the ear sometimes, but not this guy's violin. A joy to listen to.

Second, the selection. Fairly much 11 discs of solid "pop" music--a kind of Fiedlerian dream world where every piece catches the attention usually because of potent melodic pungency. I found myself looking forward to each cut, knowing I would be well-rewarded. Kreisler chose his repertoire well.

Third, oh yeah sure, nostalgia. Everything here is an echo of a world that passed largely by 1914 and was already deep nostalgia for many by the time these last recordings were made in the 1940s. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with that, it's a kind of longing not for an idealized past but for aspects of that past that are clearly missing in the world today (or even back in 1948 when the last tracks were set down). Heck, I listen to Beethoven and find myself getting nostalgic for an era when my local department store music department would make a big deal out of a new Bernstein release and a major network would actually give Lennie time to talk about classical music to the masses.

Anyway, I never intended to own the collection, now I do and I'd replace it in the blink of an eye. Charming and entertaining from disc one to disc eleven.

Almost painfully beautiful music/playing.......2005-05-08

It is one of the real advatages of modern life that we can still hear and be moved by artists from the early 20th century. As listners, there are probably psychological factors that predispose us to be touched by the original rather than someone imitating a style from the past. Part of the psychological impact for me is the nostalgia element and connections this music has to memories of my ancestors who where alive when this music was being played and recorded. But beyond the listener's psychological factor(s) the artists from the early 20th century had a completely different set of musical and non-musical experiences from our contempory artists. A contemporary artist trying to duplicate the style from another era often sounds false and affected. Regardless, ultimately performances have to stand on their own musical merit. These most definately do.

His playing combines a searching intelligence with intense and delightful musicality, his mellow honey-like tone appeals to the heartstrings, and awakens enthusiasm in his listeners. He was a great violinist who at the same time could touch and charm his audience. I highly reccomend this set to all lovers of the violin!

I would give this set a 10 stars, if I were allowed to. Kreisler has been my favorite violinist as far as I can remember, and have never gotten tired of his playing (and never will be either!) His playing has deceptive ease and elegance that makes people forget how phenominal his technique was(just listen to his crystalline trills and amazing articulation of fast runs). And even at his sweetest moments, his performance always had strong backbone and never sank into tasteless sentimentality. Kreisler's playing was really one of the kind and anyone who loves violin should listen to his recordings. I cannot recommend this set highly enough! The CD transfer is excellent.
